A quiz, which came to me in my flu-inspired delirium:

Here are the last four NFC Champs

2005 -- Seattle
2006 -- Chicago
2007 -- New York
2008 -- Arizona

How many were 2-2 four games into their seasons?

a.) none
b.) one
c.) two
d.) three
e.) all of them.

Answer quickly. No fair peeking at google. The answer is in the comments.

Answer

The answer is d.

The ’06 Bears started 4-0 but all the other three stumbled out to 2-2 starts. Does this mean Dallas is glory bound? Hardly. But it makes the case for a bit heavier dose of calm.

Nice

Sorry bout the flu..but it spurred you to a good point! Hopefully the boys can make this swing too…

Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game as a head coach..he has lost 4 home playoff games.
His longest tenure as head coach was 3 years. His second year with a team only once saw an improved record (by 1 game)

According to MNF

The chances of making the playoffs after starting 2-2 is 35%… That’s no good.

by Doctorjorts on Oct 6, 2009 10:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

At 2-2 the Cowboys have the same chance to make the playoffs as 31 other teams.

You never can tell. What if Tenn goes on a 12 game win streak? Everyone here will agree that 10 – 6 will likely get you to the playoffs. Hell Dallas could still lose 4 games and have that. Play em all and let the chips fall where they may. Your back is against a wall, but you aren’t so wounded you have no chance.

I don't agree

that 10-6 will get you in for sure. It might, but there’s a good chance it won’t. Let’s say for arguments sake the division winners are NYG, Minn, NOS, and SanFran. That leaves Chicago, Green bay, ATL, Dallas, Philly… and Arizona just for fun. I think that’s all, right?

hmm.. Actually now that I write this, I see ATL winning 9 due to the tough schedule, either Greenbay or Chicago winning only 9, possibly both, because there’s finally another competitive division in the NFC… I’ll put Philly at 9 wins through week 16, so it really could once again come down to the season finale to decide who goes, but there’s always the possbility that Dallas and Philly both do. The way I see it, Dallas will obviously have to start putting things together as the season goes on, but if they do, they might actually be playing well in December. I think if Dallas makes the playoffs, they will be peaking and could make a serious run in the playoffs. The run game could finally propel the boys through December

It's not cocky if it's a lie.

by FelixFanclub on Oct 7, 2009 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

huh?

how is that any worse than what you start the season at?

Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

LOL ... EXCELLENT POINT!!!

2-2 = 35% chance…
12 / 32 = 37.5 % chance…

Suddenly things look… the same as before

I hope I'm answering the right question.

Until we or anyone else loses that 7th game, they are not eliminated. It does become more difficult with each loss, but not impossible. When Dallas has lost that “7th” then I will hold hope for the playoffs, until then back away from the ledge, and remember, this is not college football, rankings make no difference at this level.

they probably run stats post merger

The last few years, what I call mid-salary cap era, are breaking all the rules. Teams with poor starts make Super Bowls. 5th seeds make Super Bowls. Teams with defenses ranked in the bottom third of the league win Super Bowls.

Things we never saw before are becoming commonplace. We’ve gone to another degree of parity.

by Rafael Vela on Oct 6, 2009 10:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

or the Colts in '06

their defense was awful the 2nd half of the year. Teams were running for 200 yards a game on them in December. Then the playoffs started and they were the Bubba Smith, Mike Curtis Colts from the ’60s.

Where were the Giants ranked defensively in ’07? 17th I think.

You don’t have to be a juggernaut to win a title anymore. Just get in the playoffs and take your chances.

by Rafael Vela on Oct 6, 2009 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not too much parity in the nba actually

each conference has really been dominated by 3-4 teams.

The nfc has been the definition of parity. I think that is because the two most important positions in the nfl (imo) – qb and safety…well, the nfc doesn’t have the great ones. McNabb and Dawkins were it, thats why they saw a jillion nfc championship games, but they were often somehow derailed.

This conference is just a crapshoot. It doesn’t matter how good or bad you look, make the playoffs and you have a legitimate shot. 3 teams with byes in 2 years have gone down…

I'm pretty sure all of them

Its hard to watch the Cowboys lose. I’m pretty sure they’re going to play .500 football until December, at which point we’ll see whats what for real.

I’m pretty eager to see an accurate Tony Romo again

I don’t know what Romo did to anger them, but he better atone for it quick.

by quincyyyyy on Oct 6, 2009 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

if they can't play better than .500 ball for the first 3 months...

we’re looking at massive, sweeping changes in the offseason. The first 3 months are not that bad.

I think with Minny, Chicago, GB, NO, Atlnta, Philly, NYG, AZ, SF and us…thats a long list of teams capable of getting to 10+ wins. I don’t think 9 wins gets a wc this year.

by foyesboys on Oct 7, 2009 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Boys dont suck

they cant get out of their own way, its not the same thing.

In some ways, its worse than sucking.

It is certainly more maddening.

Romo is being over-coached. He is what he is, and thats a pretty good QB. So let him be Romo.

by THEjarhead on Oct 6, 2009 11:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

true

both losses came down to the last play, and one or two diff decisions or bounces or ref calls and they’re Ws. It is even more frustrating because our expectations are higher, with some reason. We should be able to easily win those games. Right now we’re mediocre, but with upside, and still underrated, if we can get out of our way.

but i have to admit it’s getting to the point now where i know i’m making excuses, and i’ll do it because i’m a fan and i hope for the best, but they haven’t shown me they can do it when it counts and overcome the bad bounces so that’s all i can do.

it’s far from too late but we’re not where we’d hoped we’d be and the trend is not encouraging…

Division seems too good to fall behind in and catch up given the schedule. Way too early to draw firm conclusions though…

by TigerPaw on Oct 7, 2009 12:54 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

thats ridiculous

the only wins of substance in this division so far this entire season are the giants over us and washington..and that depends on how good you think washington is. As I posted yesterday, outside the division, the east is 8-3 with their 8 wins coming against teams with a combined record of 0-30. Frankly, NOTHING has been decided so far.

by foyesboys on Oct 7, 2009 1:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

kinda surprised to hear seattle was 2-2

they were REALLY good that year. At least compared to the rest of this crappy conference.

I was actually gonna guess 1 – just the giants. I thought AZ had a good start last year to…it seemed like they had to with their december being so bad.

I love the optimism but

been a Cowboy fan for 32 years. seen and heard everything that a non-player can see and hear.

No way Dallas makes it as NFC Champs this year. No way.

Playoffs? That would be huge. Probably not gonna happen.

Huge dose of calm? Sure. I love that. I’m totally calmly thinking about Dallas being average. Sad but true.

Don’t be a fanboy.

Get well soon, Raf

Actually, I’d probably say the MLB has more parity than the NBA. The NBA is a parody of parity. ;)

Funny, I had been trying to look up records for the Giants from 2 seasons ago, but couldn’t find them.

I think it’s better that a team looks crisp later on in the season rather than early on. Our team from 2 years ago had a hot start and where did that get us? 1st-rnd exit to the Giants. A team that faces adversity early on should be more likely to band together.

And with the lack of success, maybe the coaching staff tries so many new things that our opponents won’t be able to determine any patterns/tendencies in play-calling or the players

Problem is the NFC looks better this year…

Quite frankly the NFC has been the vastly inferior conference over the past decade or so, ever since Denver ended the NFC’s streak of 13 straight super bowl winners in ’97.

It’s easier to recover from a 2-2 start when you play in a weak conference. But this year it really is starting to look like the NFC might be turning that around and it may no longer be a "weak" conference (at least in the early going).

When was the last time the NFC started a season with three 4-0 teams. Throw in Chicago, Philly, San Fran and Atlanta and you’ve got four more solid one loss teams.

Look at this way, only one of the last 5 super champions has started the season as weak as 2-2; the 2007 NY Giants. The 2004 Pats started 4-0, the 2006 Colts started 4-0 and both the 2005 & 2008 Steelers started 3-1. So in terms of actual champions, it’s actually rather rare that somebody starts the season at .500 through the 1st quarter of the year and goes on to eventually win a Super Bowl.

The Cowboys season is certainly not over yet but they have definitely given themselves very little room for error when the final stretch of the season arrives.

The 2009 Dallas Cowboys: Talk to me in December.
The NFC East has won 11 Super Bowls; oddly none of those have come courtesy of the Eagles.

We will know a lot more

in a few weeks when ATL comes to town. Will be a huge game, and I think we will be sharp (and HEALTHY) coming off the bye.

But the point of all this isn’t to collect wins and then back into the playoffs like we tried to do last year. I’d rather struggle now if it leads to the possbility of gradually getting better so that we’re (they’re) peaking as it gets to December and January. But obviously you actually have to get better, so the KC cake walk (at least it better be) and the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time. The one thing Romo said that I actually agree with is that every week you want to win but you also want to continue to get better. So I’ll accept losses now if it means the mistakes that are usually covered up are actually being confronted. Eventually it has to turn into wins or none of this matters, but im optimistic.

It's not cocky if it's a lie.
