Would you trade for Merriman
Just something I'm throwing out there because they were discussing this on DC.com today. Would you trade for Shawn Merriman?. I'm sure it would take a first rounder and additional picks or players to get him. Merriman is rumored to be on the trading block. Given that Wade coached Merriman while in San Diego it's realistic to think they could kick it around.
Keep in mind Merriman is in the last year or his contract and we still have Ware to re-sign. Also keep in mind that next year will more than likely be an uncapped year so Jerry could afford both players.
Merriman would have to change positions. More than likely replace Spencer oppostite Ware.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Merriman is not only a Cancer but his knee has serious issues…

Yep
Adding to that, he’s a free agent after this year if I recall correctly, so you would only be getting a bargain for another 12 games.
I like steak.

I’m not advocating it, but no one does this trade without getting a long term deal done before hand, like when we traded for Roy Williams, he would have been a free agent this year but we locked him up at the same time as the trade.

No way
he’s still hurt right now. Maybe for a 5th rounder.

Exactly.
The longer he underperforms (which in my opinion has to do with his recovery from knee issues), the less negotiating power he, his agent, and San Diego has.

no way
forget how much it would cost to sign him, we need to come up with some players in next years draft, hopefully some youth on the OL and maybe some speed at WR, we can’t do that if we give up a #1 or even #2 for Merriman.
by stephen1 on Oct 8, 2009 12:40 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Not worth what they'd have to give up
No, let’s see how Jason Williams, Spencer and Butler develop. If I were going to trade, a lineman or another receiver might make more sense to go after. Maybe even a safety. Improving your draft would be better than trading away your picks, though. On the other hand, maybe they can try to trade Barbie to Miami to get an extra pick…

Nope
We need to use our top 3 picks to beef up O & D lines and a receiver, not a roid head with knee problems. You think Ware’s stats are down this year? Have a look at Merrimans.
Summarizing the Dallas Cowboys in two words; inconsistently amazing.

yes!
ware has been held sackless because there is no threat on the otherside… pass rush wins championships, come on guys

So is it your opinion having more pass rush is a bad thing?
When you can add a complete stud for nothing but draft picks you do it, thats my opinion.

Have we learned nothing from the Roy Williams trade?
I’m not saying Roy was a bad addition to the team, but we could have picked him up in free agency, considering we gave him a huge contract shortly after he arrived.
Merriman would come at a similar price, and we need those draft picks from the looks of things. If we made that move, it would wreak of desperation just like the Roy Williams trade a year ago.
And no, we don’t need to bring in some “stud” who’s struggled. We already have one who’s currently struggling. We need to get our high-caliber pass rushers to play to the level they’re expected to. Yeah, Spencer needs to present more of a threat than he has to make Ware’s job a little easier, but Ware isn’t getting it done like he should be.

With what we gave up to get Roy
We should have come away with Calvin Johnson.

Hell, we should have just kept the picks
And traded up to get Crabtree. Stupid, stupid, stupid trade.

Craptree's a dick.
Never let Cousin Merlin negotiate your rookie contract. Anyhow GM Jerry knows he’s a redneck who’s totally bogus as a GM so he doesn’t dare evaluate receivers. If GM Jerry missed on a bunch of receivers it might hurt his lofty reputation. Better to gamble on undrafted Calvin Cuntnutswhicker from Eponymous State than an actual receiver somebody legit has heard of.

Nope
Then we’d have two highly paid and currently overrated players at OLB.
It kills me to call Ware overrated…but at this point in the season he’s just that. Merriman’s even worse.

I'm in S.D.
Honestly…it’s funny hearing people call Tony Romo a celebrity QB and saying he doesn’t focus enough on football. Seeing Merriman out every Friday Saturday night in Downtown, owning nightclubs, hosting radio shows, hosting singles nights, over twittering, doing roids and choking out tila tequila leads me to wonder why he never gets hyped up as being too much of a me guy.
Good ability (used to have it anyway), bad attitude and a big mouth..
Thanks but no thanks

I think the current one has done worse.....
I think more people wouldve been in acceptance of given a first and third for Merriman than for RW…..be honest here…
by Boyzfan94 on Oct 9, 2009 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you saying that people would've accepted trading for Merriman last year?
Last year we had the best pass rush in the league, what would have been the point? We had/still have bigger holes to fill.
by Joon on Oct 9, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Merriman didn't play most of the season...if it was a healthy maybe
Many thought trading for RW was a mistake because we didn’t need him either. Just like people thought, including myself TO was out the door after the season, the same said Ellis was gone. Really the same thing, but Merriman is a much better talent at his position than RW. That’s a no brainer. Merriman is still not healthy and unhappy in San Diego. San Diego is going to trade him or let him walk in the off season thats certain.
Hey, I know it’s a pipe dream, but I was just throwing it out there because Derek and Nick Eatman were discussing this on DC.com yesterday….They were for it if they knew if it would turn this good defense into a great defense…problem is this defense doesn’t have playmakers….especially the secondary…You can argue Ware and Ratliff are the ony two.

Oh Jeez
That’s insane.
Harry: Huh! I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this.
Lloyd: I was thinking the same thing. That John Denver's full of shit, man.

I highly doubt that
SD would trade him. From a PR point alone, how do you get across to the fan base that your still trying to win the Super Bowl when you trade away your best player?? Plus, with the loss of Williams to injury, I think theyre going to need Merriman to step up more than ever.

oopps...and they don't want to pay him.....
True he hasn’t been the same since his injury, but he would be the best OLB on this team outside of Ware…

Always ask yourself why a player is available for trade
then go from there. If you can justify it as “that team needs to rebuild and is looking for draft picks”..acceptable. If it’s “He’s worn out his welcome” or “He’s fighting with the coaching staff” or “He’s in trouble with the law”..forget it. Sometimes a scenery change works for a player but the percentage is pretty low.

For a low pick I would..
He has talent and typically its the second year before ppl fully recover from heavy knee injuries.. Personally I would wait and try to get him in FA.. Main target in FA next year IMO is another WR… or we HAVE TO draft one.. I was one of the biggest Roy backers but now i’m losing my faith in him.. it might not be all his fault but it is some

Sure, why not? We need to stockpile OLBs and pass rushers.
Give ’em a 4th or 5th rounder and take him off their hands. We usually have a few extra of those picks come draft time.
But no more than that. And I wouldn’t do it if it impacted my ability to re-sign D Ware.

Next year will be a uncapped year so Jerry could sign bascially whoever he wants…It could be like Christmas for Jerry Jones if this group doesn’t pull it together…

I'd like to see an uncapped year :)
but I’ve got a feeling the owners/players come up with an agreement before it’s too late
by BishopWest on Oct 9, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I really don't get this.
Forget that the price you’re suggesting is absolutely ridiculous anyway for a minute, just throw that out the window. Our front 7 is pretty good, our linebackers in particular. We could use some depth, sure, but we have far more glaring needs. You guys do realize that our secondary sucks, right? Particularly weak at safety. The only guy that is decent at that position is Sensabaugh, and he’s hurt right now. Not to mention we could really use another good receiver. We need to quit trading picks, unless it’s for a really good player at one of those positions. Especially when you have guys like Eric Berry, Taylor Mays, and Dez Bryant that are more than likely going to be in the draft next year. If anything I’d be trying to get another first rounder.
Ron Washington is a tactical imbecile.

from everything Ive been reading it's not happening....the owners want a uncapped year
and they aren’t even in the same ball park on what they both can agree to.
by Boyzfan94 on Oct 9, 2009 6:38 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Also what I heard...
From most of the things I’ve been seeing and reading it appears the the owners believe they can “self-regulate” themselves well enough that a cap would not be necessary. Personally, in the long term this is bad for the league. But in the short term..if there is a team that can really benefit from an uncapped year it would be the Dallas Cowboys especially with JJ at the helm. However..the redskins would also be highly involved and the Gi-aints have a big enough revenue stream to be competitive.
I’d like to see if for a year though for sure..
