Jerry the GM

Jerry has taken a lot of abuse over the years for some him moves as GM; bad drafts, questionable hires, shaky trades, etc..  But he has also made some really good moves.  One of the best moves in the last 10 years, IMO, was the hiring of Joe Decamillas as Special Teams coordinator.  He has take what everyone viewed as a VERY weak spot on the team and turned it into a definate strength.  If it weren't for the hammy injury Rossum suffered on the opening KO against Atlanta we would be praising Jerry even more.  Stop and think, Rossum would have been the one returning the punts Crayton took back for TD's and I have a hard time believing that if Crayton (the human fair catch machine) can take them back then I KNOW Rossum could have as well.  I attribute that to a combination of better coaching and a renewed emphasis on ST, as witnessed by the drafting of Buehler, who leads the lague in touch backs.  Both the KO and punt coverage teams are performing at levels we haven't seen in Dallas since the early 90's, and isn't it great?  Now, if we can get Nick (Folkin' A) Folk back on track, stopping missing easy FG's it would be that much better.

Is Jerry 100% on personnel decisions?

Hell no!

But he has finally figured out the cap and has made us competitive again.

Jerry respects the star and has put us in a position of strength to compete for years to come.

I think Jerry is improving as a GM

He has made some mistakes and is no Bill Polian, but he always trys his best to upgrade the talent level on the team no matter what the cost.

He certainly gave them the whole draft board this year.

That was kindly of him.

+1

He’s got 20 years of GM experience under his belt. Does anyone think Jerry is too dumb to learn from the mistakes he’s made along the way?
Almost everyone agrees the roster is loaded with talent, and you can argue about Wade’s ability as head coach, but his current record is 27-13 with Dallas.

You can't stop Patrick Crayton, you can only hope to contain him.

it's not that Jerry is dumb or anyone thinks he's dumb

it’s just his ego is too big to let anyone else who may have a better idea or a better way to do things have any kind of pull for very long. i’ve been a life long Cowboys fan & i am so very grateful for the early 90’s success Jerry brought the team. i love Jerry for those trophies & i always will. but i still think someone else should be the GM other than Jerry.

Good point

I was going to put ‘egocentric’ in there along with ‘dumb’ after I typed it, but I was in a rush. I know Jerry has a big ego. But I still apply the same train of thought. He’s aware his ego has cost him in the past when it comes to his team, and I don’t think he let’s his ego rule his decisions on Cowboy’s business anymore. I don’t think he would have released TO otherwise.

I think Jerry's improvement

is directlly tied to an increase in Stephen Jones’ involvement.

Garrett needs to get a clue!

I love an owner that

wants to win so bad. If only bad enough to hire a real GM. I would do it the same way though, and I’m sure most of you would too

he's the thing most fans don't understand

Jerry, because he’s an egomaniac, will always think he’s a good GM, nobody will convince him otherwise.

no I'm saying it's pointless

to bitch about something that will never change, but I guess some people are never happy unless they’re bitching about something.

Cowboys are 5-2 and looking good and some fans want to bitch about Jerry since they can’t complain about the team right now.

You are missing the point

First of all that was a joke. Lighten up a bit.

Second, Cowboys fans are happy that the team is playing well now. Does the team being on a winning streak mean that there are no problems with this team and we should all just sit back and suck our thumbs?

This is a thread about Jerry as GM. People are giving their opinions about Jerry’s performance as General Manager. That is the point of the thread.

I wonder how much of it is Stephen’s influence.

2009 Dallas Cowboys: 10-6
2009 New York Jets: 11-5?
2009-2010 Dallas Mavericks: 57-25

Well, it's a good hire, but then, why did they ever let Joe Avezzano go in the first place?

Another thing the Parcells apologists forget-
The disaster he left behind on Special Teams, which were always fine before he came and Joe A was let go.

Carpenter was talking about DeCamillis after the game

and he said that he is a great motivator and from the get go he “cracked the whip.” But he also built them up and told them outright they are one of the most talented group of players he has been around.

DeCamilis would be a great head coach I should think.

thanks to Coach Joe D. What other NFC ST stud is there?

Terry, this is what you wrote

Jerry, because he’s an egomaniac, will always think he’s a good GM, nobody will convince him otherwise.

This is your favorite team. Are you saying that you are ok with a GM who thinks he is good, no matter what the evidence is to the contrary?

Saying that “it is never going to change” or “go root for another team” is not an answer to this question

you have to be okay with it if your a Cowboys fan, you have to accept it

The only alternative is to bitch and moan about it and thats not my style.
