On paper I wouldn't but

GB is a good team, at home and desperate, and Dallas is due for a let down. I could easily see it happening.

me too.......

In fact, ( I gotta brag a little), my son’s (Senior) football team just made the playoffs. No one gave us a chance since we started out district 0-3. We ran the table and won our last 4 games. We are now in the playoffs baby. We don’t like anyone to pick us because when they pick against us we win.

oh yeah...........

In fact, we beat an undefeated team last week. We are sure playing the no-respect card. We normally have silver pants on but we wore black ones last week so I’ve been telling my son to ask to coach to let them wear those for good luck-haha. Think I’m a little superstitious?

I probably do.........

because history, and I’m talking all the way back to Landry days, we have the tendency to play down to the competition instead of blowing teams out. I am listenening to Gil Brandt on Sirius and he says that has always been the way the Boys play.

by texstar on Nov 11, 2009 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

Gil Brandt just said.........

that we have only won once at Lambeau (last year). I’m sure you already knew that, but that’s why this games scares me. I am always cautious about the competition.

Makes me real nervous. That offense is very talented. This is one of the games Dallas need s to run the football. Al Harris vs Roy who do u take?

Romo should have a good game though

since this will be a homecoming game for him and he will again by psyched to play at Lambeau against his boyhood team.

Carp is a bad fit in the 3-4.

I never understood why Bill drafted him, maybe his dad had pictures of Bill. He will be a serviceable LB in the 4-3 IMO.

Ah,the history lessons come back

Kevin Burnett was what, the 37th overall pick? And what did he do in Dallas? Became a good nickel LB after three years.

Spot a trend? Maybe the issue was Parcells and Ireland oveselling themselves on these two guys. They’re having the same careers, yet Carp gets 100x more crap than Burnett, though he took a lot of abuse too.

by Rafael Vela on Nov 11, 2009 10:32 AM CST reply actions

I think almost everyone, including me, see that first round pick and expect him to be all world.

I understand he is not a complete bust, but in light of where he was drafted, we could have done better.

If Carp gets cut...

I think there would be alot of 4-3 teams willing to give him a try. I think the Cowboys may have screwed up his head with the position changes early on.

But I think Ohio State players are overrated.

Since he has found a role, do we let him go?

He’s never going to be the second coming of Randy White, but he is better than a lot of players out there.

I thought I saw that he was hurt.

Could be wrong, but if not it goes to show that our front office knew what they were doing. They wouldn’t give him starter money because they didn’t think he’d hold up for a full season inside of a 3-4.

I don't see it that way

I see a faction of the fandom that has a permanent slot or two for Cowboys to hate on.
In ’05 and ’06 it was Julius Jones and Roy Willie the safety.

After they left it was Romo, Carp, and now Roy Willie the WR.

And I’m sure that after Carp is gone, the rippers will find a new Cowboy or two to roast. My money is on Anthony Spencer.

He’s just a placeholder. The self-hating is permanent.

The one thing that does puzzle me is how carpenter is one of the most obscure role players that dallas has but

he is getting a significant amount of face time on BSPN. That is what makes me scratch my head, he is on as much as crayton, it is different for crayton because he is a starter (for the most part he has been a starter) as opposed to carpenter the nickel LB. I am not bothered by this but it is puzzling, maybe they just like talking to him.

by APerfectStar on Nov 11, 2009 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

Understand, I'm not saying this about you, GunsUp

but I was at a game in August and guys in front of me were screaming at the top of their lungs, “cut him!” every time Carp made a play. And he was making plays.

There are people on other sites I have seen who admit, “I watch every play Bobby Carpenter makes every week…”

That’s not support. That’s a vendetta. Okay, he’s a disappointment. Find me a team that always, and I mean always, hits on its 1st rounders. The Cowboys have actually been good in that department compared to other teams.

The guy is contributing to a winning team. I’ll take it. He’s never play like Patrick Willis, or Keith Brooking. So be it. But he’s contributing to the wins. Call me crazy, but I’m gonna root for any Cowboy who does that.

by Rafael Vela on Nov 11, 2009 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

I think some of us are still taking it a little personally.

I defended him for his first two years, and finally moved to the dark side. I am getting more comfortable with him in again, but it is a slow process for recovery in haters anonymous.

by GunsUp on Nov 11, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

I have said it before and will do it again...

Carp is an ideal foil for Bradie James in Passing Downs…every time an opponent of ours has a 3rd and Long and i see James…i know he is gonna be exposed in coverage. I can see why people feel like Carp is not aggressive enough against the run..but his role is invaluable to our defense on passing downs.

by thejanusman on Nov 11, 2009 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

Dude has found a role and is improving into it

Maybe he can play after all.

so he’s not the next dware….so be it.

Burnett looked in the mirror and saw a starter. dallas didn’t, nor did anyone else, but burnett left b/c he would not accept the nickle role.

if carp keeps doing well in his role, why cut him? why not offer him a right-sized contract? if he is willing to accept his role and play for that role’s money, thats a good thing.

I've never hated on Carp

I just always pointed out he isn’t physically tough enough to be a 3-4 ILB, which he isn’t. Maybe it sounds like hating, but it isn’t.

Hating is over the top, unjust criticism, and Carp being a finesse player isn’t even a criticism but a fact.

He’s doing a good job as our nickel backer, but I think he could start on a lot of 4-3 defenses.

nah..that's just good old fashioned ribbing as you'd like to say

I heard Colombo call him that in camp last year and thought it was appropriate since he doesn’t relish contact.

Regarding Romo, the only fans I call haters are the ones over the top like Tex, who clearly have a dislike for the player or whose criticism is extremely unfair and unjust. I have no problem with Romo criticism when it’s fair, none at all.

In retrospect

Maybe we, and myself definitely, have been to hard on Bobby. It isn’t really fair to think all first rounders can become all pro, and he has been solid in filling in where Burnett was. Still, I hope when Williams returns he is able to take his spot and we can just cut the cord on the whole Carp experiment. I think Parcells fell in love with the whole father/son thing a little to much.

And as for who we could of had, I look at people like Davin Joesph, Santonio Holmes(would have prevented the Roy debacle), or Nick Mangold(would have kept Gurode at guard, though with both guards we probably don’t get Davis the year after) before Carp. Looking back, this draft is full of underachievers(Young, Bush, Leinart, Brick, Hawk, Huff all in the top 10 alone), and had a few bright spots(Mario, Cutler, Ngata, Bunkley, D-Will), so I am not surprised we got one of the busts of the draft.

by Zach22 on Nov 11, 2009 10:48 AM CST reply actions

Houston

Houston made the right pick at the time, and anyone who knows football realized that at draft time. You don’t take a QB regardless of his college skill(Sorry Vince) or one who played with top shelf talent his entire college career(sorry Matt), or a HB from the same school, when you have no offensive or defensive lines. Mario was a beast on the college level, and had all the potential to be a solid end for years, and has developed into just that. Not as much as say, a Jared Allen or any other top level DE, but still a great player.

by Zach22 on Nov 11, 2009 10:56 AM CST up reply actions

That draft was billed as a great class.

It just shows that it’s not a science, but a wildass educated guess.
