While starters such as Anthony Spencer, Flozell Adams, and Miles Austin were pulled from the game with the Cowboys up by four touchdowns on the Seahawks, QB Tony Romo remained. Why?
From Calvin Watkins:
Phillips said the team wanted to take Romo out with about nine minutes left, but when the Seahawks scored with 8:40 to play in the fourth quarter cutting the Cowboys lead to 38-17, it gave the coach some pause.
"We were planning on handing the ball off and once it got under nine minutes we felt like we might take him out," Phillips said. "But they scored a touchdown, they weren't completely out of it, so we had to go from there."

Frist
Take him out anyway. The SeaHawks got lucky on that score. If they had taken him out then it would have cut another score off for them.

if they had taken him out the Seahwaks would have never gotten that score....

Yep
Maybe they didn’t want Romo to end his day on a screwup. Give him a chance to finish on a high note.

Maybe they were padding his stats.

Perhaps
If Romo had passed for 300 yards it would have been his 20th 300+ game. Guess we’ll save that one for Philadelphia.

Romo should also throw his 100th TD pass soon
I think it would be cool if he threw it during the Thanksgiving Day game since I’ll be down there for that one as I was present the game he threw his first TD pass.

It's seems Romo has really grown as a QB
the last few games. He still has some of the gunslinger in him and that’s good, but the brain farts have been few and far between. With the cast of players around him Dallas could really turn up the heat the last half of the season.

If he throws for 300, it’s probably a loss.

Not even remotely true...
We beat you in 2007 in Philly with Tony throwing for over 300 yards. We did the same last year in week 2 in Dallas.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

If he had said, if Tony throws 40-50 times, it's probably a loss, it would have made sense
but we win the vast majority of the games where Tony goes over 300 yards.

16-3 to be exact
the 3 losses coming in the last reg. season game (against Detroit) in 06, the week four loss to Washington last year and the fateful Arizona game last year.

Who Watched Doug Free?
I plan on going over the game again tonight once the Mrs. is in bed to look at his performance. I recall having seen him get some TE help, but how was he alone?

There are a couple of reasons why Phillips' answer to the question makes no sense.
First of all, I can understand the justification of sending Romo out there if all you are going to do is hand the ball off. Romo has been taking the snaps the whole game, let him go out there and take the snaps for another series and hand the ball off. What did we do though, we give Flozell some rest but send Romo back out there and have him drop back to pass on 1st down from the Cowboys 13????!!! That doesn’t make any sense. In my mind, if you take Flozell out, you either take Romo out or have Romo hand the ball off on 1st down. Horrible decision.

Maybe Wade thought it worked like it does in baseball.
Once they go out then they can’t go back it.
With that in mind, Wade answer makes lots of sense.

Crazy stupid call!
Agreed ,
What was need for a starting QB out there (with backup left tackle) in the 13 yard line trying to pass in the 1st down , when you have 28 point lead and in 4th qtr?
Honestly I cant think of one! (unless Romo asked (needed) a 300 yard game )
It was a stupid call and Romo needs to be a bit more cautious under the circumstances , when the play broke down and at that point there was no need for heroics , he should have just slide and take the sack ( it was 1st down for god sake! )

Kitna's fumbled snaps...
That’s the reason – He simply had WAY too many fumbled snaps in the preseason, and they don’t trust him (and shouldn’t trust him) in mop-up duty. You can’t risk a fumbled snap – Phillips made the right call there.

Good point. He did some in camp too.
Makes me wonder if he’s still doing that in practice.

It also explains Phillips’ dumb explanation. He rightfully can’t say “We’re afraid our backup QB might hand the ball to the defense.”
by Bye, Dawk :( on Nov 2, 2009 4:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes that makes sense
Better to have Romo fumble. Plus no need to have him work on his snap exchange in a real game situation. I’d rather wait until its a tie game and Romo is out to let them work on it.

Did Wade forget why Seattle scored a TD?
He talks about running the ball, but Romo instead threw a pass on first down. If we had the run the ball, as we should, Seattle would have never had the opportunity to score that TD.
