Since we're all looking forward to it:
Here’s a look at our ridiculously competitive match-up:
Same record. Same home record. Same road record. Same conference record. Same # of TDs.
The Eagles have scored 6 more points than the Cowboys (203-197) through 7 games, and allowed 3 less (133-136). Folks, that’s about as even as it gets.
Both teams have beat up on weaker opponents, and both teams have lost to good opponents. Yes, the Eagles did lose to the hapless Raiders, but they also beat the Giants convincingly, who got the best of the ‘Boys. And let’s not pretend that Dallas’ victory over Kansas City was all that impressive (though it did seem to mark the emergence of Miles Austin as a HUGE threat). So, I’m not going to buy any argument about one team being better than another b/c of opponents.
Let’s talk defense. The Eagles are allowing just under 300 yards/game, with 103 coming on the ground (5 runs of 20+ yards, none over 40), and 194 through the air (17 plays of 20+ yards, and only 1 over 40). The key stat here, is that while the Birds have given up 11 passing TDs, they’ve picked off QBs 14 times and sacked him 21. 33% of 3rd downs have been completed against us.
The Cowboys are allowing just over 340 yards/game with 105 coming on the ground (4 runs of 20+ yards and none over 40), and just over 250 through the air (19 plays of 20+ yards, and 3 over 40) While allowing 12 TDs, they have only 4 INTs on the year and have sacked the QB 17 times. 35% of 3rd downs conversions are successful against their D.
On Offense: The Cowboys run for 148 yards/game while breaking 9 for over 20 yards, and 2 over 40. They average 263 yards/game through the air with 26 plays for over 20 yards and 8 over 40. They complete 60% of their passes and have 12TDs to 4 picks while allowing 13 sacks. They convert 41% of their 3rd down attempts.
The Eagles get just over 114 yards/game rushing while breaking only 5 over 20, but 3 over 40 yards. We gain just over 250 yards/game through the air with 23 plays over 20 yards, and 9 over 40. We complete 61% of our passes and have 13TDs to 4 picks (3 in one game by Kolb) while allowing 17 sacks. We convert 36% of our 3rd down attempts.
Both teams have been penalized 50 times, for over 400 yards.
The matchup looks awesome! The Cowboys gain more yards/game, but the Eagles allow fewer. The Eagles get to the QB more per game, but the Cowboys prevent it better. Both teams are capable of big plays and susceptible to them. If there’s one stat on paper that seems to tip the hat to one side, it would be the Bird’s ability to pick off the pass.
Keys to the Game: Between DeSean Jackson, Miles Austin, Barber, McCoy, Witten, Celek, Westbrook, and Felix, we can argue offensive weapons all day. Both teams are loaded.
The Eagles need to shut down Witten. Though he hasn’t been a huge part of the ‘Boys offensive attack, TEs are an historic problem for the Eagles, and Boss proved it again, even in our dominant win. The Bird’s secondary (Samuel, Mikell, Sheldon) should be able to contain Austin and the rest (and I know the Cowboy fans will disagree with that, and listen, I know anything can happen on Sunday. I’m just saying that our secondary is probably the best you’ve seen, well, maybe second to Denver), and we’ve been consistently good defending against the run.
The ‘Boys need to disrupt McNabb. He is streaky, and has been this year. He was not good against Oakland or Washington where he had pressure in his face, and he had to force a lot of passes which ended up in the dirt. We’ve not been successful in 3rd and long, and a couple McNabb bounce-passes, and that’s exactly where we’ll find ourselves.
It could obviously go either way, but I’m going to be a homer and give it to the Eagles at home 27-21.

I'll give you everything but the final prediction...
…the Cowboys are on a roll and have a lot more to prove…mostly to themselves….they are ready to avenge last year’s embarrassment.
Nick Folk wins it with 14 seconds left: 30-27
The 2007 NYG were 2-2 after Week 4 as well. How'd that year go for them?

I think both teams have a lot to prove
we both had big wins this week, but we’re still haunted by questions: You guys didn’t look good against Tampa or Kansas City, we lost to Oakland, and only DeSean Jackson came to play against Washington. I think we both still have a lot to prove. Heck, I’m still not even sure what to expect from the Eagles on any given week.

Average yards allowed last 5 games: 304. That’s a long way from the 462 allowed against Tampa and 427 against the Giants, which obviously skew the season average a little.

I honestly think that Philly will win this Sunday too…
…and will be pleasantly surprised if it works out differently. Really more than anything, (baring key injuries) it’s the home field advantage that will come into play.
It’s the rematch in December that I’m expecting the Cowboys to win.

I’m expecting a loss although we do owe these guys one. I’m also more looking at the December game as possibly being more important. Really hope this team reverses its trend and improves each week so all the December swoonists can chow down on some crow.

no offense to you guys, because I am sure you do actually expect a loss for us, but this is the easy way out. We lose and you predicted it, we win and you are happy. It’s a win-win situation for the fan, it bugs me.

I should clarify..
I don’t “expect” them to lose (regardless of what I wrote), I guess I meant “it wouldn’t be the end of the world” if we lose. My main point was I want the team to keep improving week after week, so that the December game means a win. I’m not the guy who comes on the board with the “I told you so” posts, they’re pointless and self-serving.

Last three weeks though
Dallas +3
Eagles +7 (Although 4 turnovers came against the Redskins and two came against the Raiders)
The Eagels have a habit of achieving large turnover margins against terrible teams. That throws those numbers off. Romo is a better qb than anyone the Eagles have played so far (except maybe Brees).

I dont know how you can think they are close...
But this year especially Brees is really playing great. I dont think you can say Brees isnt better than Romo this year without knowing you are lying to yourself. I love McNabb and I would never make that comparision. Brees and P. Manning are just in a different league so far this year.

During MNF
it was obvious that the Saints WR’s were catching quite a few balls that Brees didn’t throw that well. Without their acrobatic leaps, turns, twists, and sticky hands, Brees would look much more average.

Brees’ guys bailed him out a metric F ton of times against Atlanta.
Romo seems to be evolving. Manning, Brady, and Brees are all great, but Romo’s working his way into that conversation. He’s a highly intelligent player who is constantly working on things few QBs even think of to improve. He could very well be one of the greats when it’s all said and done.

Considering he has constantly been better for the past years..
Yes? I mean three weeks ago people were on this site wondering if Romo should even be the QB for the Cowboys. Brees was putting up 35+ points a game. Now Romo has won a few in a row and you are all back on the “He’s the best there is train”. Meanwhile Brees is still putting up 35+ points. Go grab career stats, go grab career records, go grab whatever you want I know for a fact Brees is better than Romo. It makes me think a lot less of all of you now that I know you cant admit that.

This is Brees vs Romo just for this year. Great thing is they have thrown exactly the same amount of passes. Also the Saints have had to face tougher opponents so far in the season. Notice how Brees is better in every single throwing category.

nice job
I noticed the “rush yards” and said, yeah…Romo can extend the play with his legs his rushing yards are much higher…
Then I noticed that with all that running around, he only has 1 rushing 1st down, and 1 rushing TD. Brees has far fewer yards, but 6 1st downs, and 2 TDs….
Romo might run more, but it looks like Brees is much more efficient…where is Romo running?

C'mon, Brees is one of the best in the game playing at the top of his game on a team that's playing at the top of its game.
The Cowboys are still a bit shaky here and there, so comparing Romo to Brees in any manner is more of a compliment than your attempt at knocking him.
Give credit where credit is due or else go back and compare Brady or Manning’s number to your QBs.

I’m an Eagles fan, but I can say that Romo is a really good QB. He can be streaky, but so can McNabb. He has had a lot of success, and I don’t doubt that he will find some success in the post-season one year. I don’t feel this burning need to prove that McNabb is somehow better. These guys are professionals.
There is not a football fan or analyst in the world that can seriously say that McNabb has not been awesome. Streaky? Yes. But he’s done more with fewer weapons than a lot of QBs. Why can’t you give him that credit, it’s a fact. It doesn’t take away from Romo to admit that.

For the record....
I’d give Brees the edge over Romo if for nothing else because he doesn’t seem as prone to the occasional stinker that Romo has been; aside from the first month of the ’07 season of course when Brees was off-the-charts awful.
But when I read “it seems a little early to be comparing him to Drew Brees” I have to ask myself are we talking about the same guy who has won one whole playoff game? Yes, I know the Saints have been terminally diseased on the defensive side of the ball. But what was wrong with the Chargers teams Brees couldn’t lead to a playoff victory? Best running back and most freakish tight end in football and those teams beat the Colts and Pats in their own houses. If Brees is this living breathing legend, how come his Chargers didn’t win one stinking playoff game?

with his post-season success as well…but until he wins the big one, there’s always going to be that asterisk.
Before anyone can even START thinking about Romo’s greatness, he has to do SOMETHING in the post season. Until he does, I have to rank him behind a number of QB’s, including McNabb.

In 5 NFC Title games and a Super Bowl, here’s what awesome apparently amounts to:
129-225; 57.3 pct
1,426 yards
9 TD/9 INT (1 RUSH TD)
72.9 QB Rating
6 FUMBLES, 4 LOST
So apparently 10 TD/13 turnovers is great playoff football? You sho’ ’bout dat?

No, he really hasn’t. Now to be fair, he’s had friggin’ handymen at the receiver position most of those games. But still Mr. Lowest INT percentage in NFL history sure can serve ’em up on a silver platter in NFC Title Games and Super Bowls.
I’m a Cowboys fan, not a Romo fan. If that deranged looking redneck Stephen McGee or Jon “I got Jesus on the headset” Kitna got it done in a pinch for the Cowboys in the playoffs, that’s just as well. Romo hasn’t cemented anything yet. Where did I call him an all-time great?

My friend...
you do not understand this game…and I don’t blame you because you guys haven’t won a playoff game in a while, so maybe you’re too young to remember a successful Cowboys team, or maybe it’s just been too long that your memory is fuzzy.
The post-season is a blank slate. Every team in the NFL is composed of professional athletes. Any team can win any week, and success breeds success. Teams catch fire and ride their success regardless of their performance in the regular season. The Giants were not that impressive the year they won, but they got hot at the right time, and rode that consistency. The Cardinals last year were not an impressive team, and were expected to lose in every round of the playoffs, but they got hot…they beat the Panthers, then the Falcons, then the Eagles…
You can’t make a “you beat a weak team” argument. Should the steelers have an asterisk next to last years title because it was only the lowly 9-7 Cardinals they beat for that title? No, that, sir, is a stupid argument.

Let me give further context.
Had the Eagles not won something like 3 or 4 in a row against the Bucs team that beat them in the ‘03 Title Game; including two prior playoff meetings? So we can both agree that the Eagles were fully capable of beating that Bucs team. They didn’t, of course.
Also, even though last season’s NFC Title game was in Arizona, the fact is the Eagles had previously curb-stomped them to the tune of 48-20 in the regular season. What happened when it actually mattered?
That’s why it matters that the Eagles beat a couple of chumps to get to the Super Bowl. Because even against teams they’ve been capable of handling in the regular season they’ve suffered letdowns against in the postseason.
Finally, ooh, you’re telling me there’s this thing called parity in today’s NFL? Certainly. That being said, there’s still no denying the AFC has been the superior conference. And the year the Eagles did get out of the NFC there were two 8-8 teams in the playoff field.
by MadMick on Nov 5, 2009 7:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You're right.
The Eagles were in it all the way until the end against a great Patriots team in that Super Bowl regardless of whether or not they beat total hacks to get there. But who was that dude that threw three picks and blew chunks? Isn’t he the same guy that’s so super awesome in the postseason with his postseason success?

How do explain than IgglesFanDeployed??
In Romo we Trust
by Terry on Nov 5, 2009 10:50 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I would say longer career?
Honestly I would have to look at the numbers myself. I think it probably would have to do with attempts because I imagine Brees has thrown the ball a bunch more than Romo just based off the amount of starts he has had. Also Elway had a career rating under 80 so I also think people put too much credit into that stat in the first place. I just dont get this arguement though. No one is sayin Romo is not a great QB. He is really good at what he does. But to compare him to Drew Brees at this stage in Romo’s career is just absurd. Maybe 3 years from now we can look back and think that but even fans of the Cowboys should be open minded enough to acknowledge Brees is a better QB at this time.
by IgglesFanDeployd on Nov 6, 2009 2:12 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Took a look at the numbers...
Pretty much like I thought at first. Brees has 105 INT in 3,885 attempts during 114 games played. Romo has 50 INTS in 1,537 attempts in his 46 games. Looks like if Romo continues to play the way he has he’ll end up with the same rating as Brees. I think it’s important to note that Brees has a 90 rating which is pretty impossible to maintain over the course of a career. Romo is at 95 if he can keep that up all the better for him but I just dont think its feesible that he will do so. I think we can all agree Peyton Manning is one of the best QBs to ever play the game.. his career QB rating is 95. That is alot of years at a high level of play. I think Romo can have a great career but I dont think he can maintain that high of a rating for the next 5-6 years.

it is feasible
as Manning has a career rating over 90 and Steve Young finished his career with a rating over 90 as well.

3 of his first 5 years with the Vikings he had a QB rating of over 96. Now he averages a 67-70. Im not saying Romo will turn into Clupepper but in the NFL anything can happen, injuries, etc. Let Romo play more than 100 games before we start quoting his “career” averages. Early in the season, the Eagles wear their whites at home because the lighter colors don’t absorb as much heat, but as the season progresses, they switch to the dark unis.

If we can contain DeSean
we should win the game. If our secondary starts playing keystone cops, Mcnabb will have a huge day.
I think some early and hard hits on McNabb and jackson help set the tone but our secondary is prone to some serious mental lapses.
After the way the season started, I’m just happy this game means something.

i think the game will depend on Dallas having a big day running the ball
Garret forgets to run the ball some games and it cost us. The running game is the teams strength and is that can be established then that will help calm the philly rush. Draw plays early, play action in the middle, Barber in the end.

I think our game plan is really geared toward that
we seem to not win close games (think of our 1st game last year against you guys). This year, every victory has been a double digit margin. We come out looking for the big play early, and if we can’t get it…well hell, we’ll just keep trying (see Oakland)

I don’t know what to expect from our OLine. They’ve been streaky… and outright BAD at times. I was very impressed with how they manhandled the Giants front four both opening up holes for the run, and giving McNabb time, but I don’t know if that game was an exception or the rule.
Our defensive line has been very good, and that should be a battle…we’ll get the best of you a couple times, but Romo is really good at making guys miss, and ridiculously accurate while throwing on the run.

the msm will try and tout this game as a shoot out, but both of these defenses will keep the game close. The game will come down to who wins the turnover battle.
To the eagle fans out there, how do you feel about your special teams? Right now the NFL.com site shows that dallas and philly are close in ST, dallas is slightly ranked higher but looking at the stats it is pretty even. I like our guy Buehler keeping your return game within the 20 yard line.
Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

Buehler
has a freaking MONSTER leg! He might just command touchbacks. Ellis Hobbes has been good for us, not spectacular. He lost a critical fumble against NO, that broke our backs, but he’s probably the best guy we’ve had back there in a while.
Also, there’s no disputing how dangerous DeSean can be on punt returns. You’re really best to kick away from him.
Akers is showing a stronger leg than last year, but you’ll still probably field the ball at the 5. We haven’t allowed many good returns.
Punting is a whole other issue. Rocca can be on or off…and sometimes WAY WAY off…like a 20 yard punt off. I don’t know what to expect from him, but Crayton is obviously pretty electric getting the ball in his hands too.
I’d call us even.

Our return teams and coverage teams are above average...
Akers and Rocca have been so inconsistent this year I started yelling at them before the ball is even snapped. “C’mon Akers dont be a bum this is a 35 yarder you better make this one”. “Rocca try not to shank the ball dude it’s your only job.” Akers seems to be garbage, and by that I mean 50/50 from beyond 45. He missed two in the Raiders game which was pretty big. Igglesblog.com did a nice write up about how he is well within the NFL average for kickers… but he used to be so automatic it is hard not to notice his decline over the past 2-3 years after his injury.

DAL has improved greatly on ST
otherwise I would be sweating DeSean on PR a lot more.
In general our offense is a lot more balanced and it seems as if teams game-plan to take away one aspect(pass or run), we exploit the other. Our defense is not as sack-happy as it was last year, but may be more fundamentally solid – especially PBU by the DB’s. They are simply around the ball more. PHL’s real advantage appears to be the turnover creation by their DB’s. I am surprised by the efficiency of both O-LInes- DAL is more consistent and I thought PHL"s was basically destroyed going into the season.
Interesting to note PHL scored 5 TD’s on drives of no more than 4 plays against NY. That may have been a factor of Westbrook missing the game as much as anything. The downside of a quick-strike O , as we well know, is the impatience it creates in sustaining drives. I like the fact that DAL strength-running the FB, runs somewhat counter to PHL’s – defensive backfield play.
I am very anxious about this, as we all know, DAL hasn’t played in PHL very well. Here’s hoping an x-factor(Keith Brooking?)can change that dynamic

regardless who wins will be an awesome game
As a major Philly hater (since fat old Butt Ryan coached there) I can’t believe I wrote that in the subject line; but as the post writer outlined, these are two evenly matched teams, at least statistically; and both have something to prove. I like to think/hope/pray Big D has more to prove and will use that as motivation to kick some bird tail.

by Joon on Nov 3, 2009 6:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Quiet for the first few. Once Curtis got hurt it gave Maclin a chance to start. He had a MONSTER game against Tampa for 6 catches, 142 yards, and 2 scores. Since then, he’s been consistent 3-6 catches, 40-60 yards, and he had a great TD catch over Corey Webster against the Giants.

The run...
The Cowboys have been able to run the ball at least decently against most teams. When opponents put 8 in the box they have been able to burn people on outside runs and passes. Philly is a quick though possibly slightly undersized defense so that match up is intriguing.
If Philly can’t run the ball I am predicting a win for the cowboys (barring lots of turnovers) If the D line and linebackers can do a good job of stopping the run Reid has shown himself pretty quick to pull the plug on the running game and give it to McNabb. The Giants are very vulnerable to the run (as the cowboys showed) and Philly exploited that. In my opinion the Dallas Run D is much better than the Giants and this will be the matchup of the game.

Tampa Bay held Philly to 76 yards rushing, but Philly won with the pass
and the Bucs pass defense is rated higher the Cowboys.
Does that mean that Dallas could limit the Eagles’ run game and yet Philly could still beat us with the pass, like they did the Bucs?

His qb rating for his wins?

vrs NYG – 146.7
His qb rating for his single loss?
vrs OAK – 66.3
In the Oakland game, McNabb only completed 47.8% of his passes, and they sacked him SIX TIMES.
Perhaps a key to defeating them would be pressuring McNabb!

Turnovers are the key
If Dallas protects the ball, it will win the game, period. Eagles feast off turnovers and monster plays in the return game and with deep passes to Jackson. Stop that, which Dallas is poised to do, and you can frustrate the Eagles. Then you have to turn up the pressure on McNabb.
As long as Garrett calls a balanced game, even if Dallas has to punt it should win. Play to Dallas’s physical strengths.

I think our secondary can hang with Philly’s receivers, our front 7 can get after McNabb and stop the run, and our offense can move the ball on anybody.

Like many of the statistical comparisons...
above and in other post streams about this game, both teams right now are fairly unpredictable – Eagles lose to the Raiders but destroy the Giants, Cowboys barely escape the Chiefs but fairly handily beat Atlanta… etc…
We can all see the upside of our Cowboys – balanced offensive attack that can either run all over you OR hit the big pass play. And if Romo plays mistake free, we look pretty darn good.
Defense the same thing, a lot of ‘bend’ but little ‘break’.
The Eagles look a little more vulnerable, where their running game seems to be hit or miss, but McNabb has some weapons and they can win on a 70% to 30% pass to run play selection.
I absolutely feel that we can win this game, IF we play mistake free and IF we don’t give McNabb all day to pick us apart; we don’t have to kill him, but at least hurry him on most plays and that will be enough to win… and it seems in our history regardless of how good or bad we are we have trouble with Donavan, most of the time..
I think playing mistake free at the Link right now is a very tall order… but i think IF this team, from coaching staff on down, really wants to prove they can win a ‘big’ game, this is where they can do that… and i think they will… i think we will have success running the ball, and Romo will not be asked to do too much therefore playing mistake free, and our D will be able to harass McNabb enough to keep too many big plays from happening (one or two maybe, but not enough to beat us).

we're in the same boat
of course you can win this game, you’re an NFL team and any given sunday (heck the raiders pulled it off 3 weeks ago)…of course you can lose this game, the Eagles are a good football team
this game could easily go either way IF…

I think it comes down to A or B…
A) The Iggs will have no answer to Felix Jones and the Boys win.
B) Wade Phillips gives a motivational pre-game pep talk to the team and the Iggles blow the Boys out even worse than the 44-6 debacle last year.
Things you can count on:
Tony will throw one pick.
Donovan will throw a ball in the dirt to someone who is wide open.
Andy Reid will waste timeouts.
Andy Reid will make a stupid challenge.
DeShaun will have two holy sh*t plays
Miles Austin will move the chains
Both teams will get sacks
Romo will make a play on the run
Donovan’s dream will come true and a receiver will finally somehow catch a ball with their feet
Tony will cry
Donovan will throw up
Win or lose, Wade will look lost and confused on the sideline.

This will be fun to rub a win into the Eagles fans side..
They die tonight..
May be Cowboys nation & Michael Irvin will be laughing his ass off while McNabb is laying motionless on the ground for 10 minutes.
NOT! Not that classless..
