I'd say quite a few players didn't "engage" early

Romo didn’t play good most of the game until clutch time came and then he played great. Isn’t that what so many QB’s are judged on?? Most of the offense didn’t engage early and played like holy crap. Romo stepped up and won us a game at the end though. It sucked how we won but it’s better than a loss.

by aussie_cowboy on Nov 22, 2009 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

it does happen

it’s the nature of speaking about the game from play to play. it’s why people post during the game.
however, aussie cowboy, are you serious? it was 6-0 with minutes to go in the game. Cowboys had forced no turnovers, but committed turnovers, they missed field goals and teh redskins missed 2.
You don’t own the moral high ground by saying people were overreacting – AFTER the decision is final.
If you were in a car skidding out of control towards a guard rail, but it stopped all of a sudden… would you mock those in the car who expected the collision?

by Joey2zs on Nov 22, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not trying to claim "moral high ground"

Just commenting on how so many fans are extremely negative. Calling for Romo to be benched, saying the season is over and that the team has given up. Frankly I see it as rather ridiculous.

It's just fan reaction. I don't think there's anything wrong with it

Fans react negatively when the team is playing poorly and they react positively when the team is playing well and they post accordingly. I don’t think very many Cowboy fans have emotions that run in neutral for very long.

the Cowboys O played like crap, but the negative comments started the moment Barber fumbled...

I believe that was the opening drive? And we looked good up to that point. And Barber is not known for fumbling … AND WHO KNEW HOW THE GAME WOULD PROGRESS… the pessimists turned out to be right, it was a game similar to last week… UGLY … but with 5 minutes to go in the first quarter I started to take exception to all of the AT THAT TIME overly pessimistic ranting … so shoot me :)

Bottom line for me: we have championship caliber units on both sides of the ball… we’re 7-3 … we’ve got TONS OF ROOM for humility and improvement … I kinda like where we are right now.

i have my doubts

I see the last 3 weeks as its own group of games, where the offense has played poorly and the defense has played very well. In two of them, the offense did JUST enough to win and in one it didn’t.

by foyesboys on Nov 22, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

2 gutsy wins in 3 weeks

over division rivals. It wasn’t pretty for sure, and our offensive obviously has a ways to go, but these were 2 wins that showed the heart of this team.

I may be wrong, only time will tell, but I think a much improved defense and a qb who does a better job managing the game will lead to finally lead to some late season victories.

field goals

aren’t TDs. the Defense get gets the game ball… but the margin here was razor thin. Those who are critical of the cowboys effort are right… those who are relieved and happy the cowboys won are right… those who are concerned are right… but those who are on moral soapboxes insulting those who are concerned about only 7 points and a narrow win aren’t right. They’re self righteous jackasses.

by Joey2zs on Nov 22, 2009 3:54 PM CST up reply actions

o i agree the margin was thin

a win against washington is a good win no matter how it happens. We have lost to this team time after time even in our best years.

We absolutely have to improve offensively, yes. But dude…they’re our rival. We’ve beaten washington and philly with gutsy play and just enough offense in 2 of the last 3 weeks.

by foyesboys on Nov 22, 2009 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Joey, excellent points...

I’m one of those “moral soapboxes” not because I’m not also concerned, but because of the absolute tidal wave of pessimism starting with the team’s first mistake.

If criticism were candy, we’d all be diabetics.

Do the Boys have things to work on? Sure. Is there room for criticism and concern? Absolutely.

Is the sky falling? Did we just get blown out by the Eagles with a playoff birth on the line? … from a large percentage of posts, you would think so.

I’ll continue to remind the pessimists WHEN their positions are far from reality.

We’re 7-3, have a top 10 defense AND offense, with both units showing potential to be GREAT… sorry if my optimism offends anyone :)

hes right now kinda like a poor man’s eli with running ability i think – he takes what the defense gives him and buys time with his feet, he rarely if ever beats himself…but they do not score much at all and that is a sign of a qb whose not in the top 10 of the league.

Today he played well, but generally hes missing the opportunities for big plays when they’re there.

earthworms and intelligence

I’m compelled to write by the negative commenters on this board. Cut newman, cut scandrick, fire garrett, bench romo, cut roy williams, etc. Is this supposed to be serious a comment? Play a team of kitna, pat mcq, allan ball, and kevin ogleetree. Do you have the intelligence than an earthworm? I can tell you how that would turn out. Poorly.

Dallas had the 2nd or 3rd best offense in the league going into the GB game. I re-watched the GB game. The offense looked great on the first drive. It bogged down after columbo went down. To me its obvious what changed. Free for Columbo. If you want to say the dallas offensive players are bad it’s incumbent on you to explain what changed. Why did they go from being a top 5 offense to being a bad offense.

My explanation would be that while Free hasn’t been terrible its been enough of a drop-off to tip the offense and have a dramtic impact. First there are little plays where he lunges and whiffs on a run block resulting in negative plays, leaving 2 and 10 instead of 2 and 7. Garrett’s options are then circumscribed in 2 ways: one by down and distance and second by the need to protect Free. I suspect the biggest difference is the changes we can’t see. The extra blocker garrett is keeping in to help Free, the plays Garrett isn’t calling because he doesn’t have confidence in Free yet (which btw is exactly the right thing to do). And its not Garrett’s fault that Barber fumbled on the 20. If Dallas is up 7, Garrett had more flexibilty to call the game. So if you want to call for someone’s head, start with Free and follow that up with Barber or maybe Demarcus Ware for not being able to get a sack against the skins 2nd string left tackle.

So It Takes A Genius To Be Happy With The Way Dallas Played Today?

Or more specifically Romo? Sorry, chief, but the vast majority of us get upset when the Cowboys play terribly because they are a team of superior talent. Playing down to Washington’s level is unacceptable. We won today, and in a 16 game season that’s all that matters. But there doesn’t need to be any champagne popping with anyone on the offensive side of the ball. The D really stepped up today and put Romo, who was having a terrible game, in the position to win.

You may not like the negative comments, but don’t you dare accuse fans who want to hold their team to a certain standard of being stupid. That being said, there are knee jerk reactions that are just silly, but being positive doesn’t indicate intellectual superiority.

Greetings from the Humungus, the Ruler of the Wasteland, the Ayatollah of Rock and Roll-A. I laugh at your puny plans.

saying to bench Romo and cut X player who just made a bad play

I know it’s out of frustration, but it does frustrating to read it over and over when it actually is really stupid

by scottmaui on Nov 22, 2009 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

the most idiotic comments that I’m singling out are the various calls to play Kitna, cut newman, cut Roy Williams, run more, fire garrett, fire Phillips, etc.

did you make any of those comments? if you did I think you’re either not serious or an idoit. if not you can probably ignore my comment.

but reading the constant calls to cut/fire various players/coaches is like watching a infant trying to use a laptop to toast bread.

Isn't that what we wanted??

Last year, with T.O. , we kept trying to go deep all the time. Once the D figured that out, we kept trying anyway and ended up with 3rd and longs with an injured backfield.
With our running game, we should be trying to pass underneath to set up manageable conversions.

Redskins Defense

going into this game, I didn’t give them enough credit, trying to discount their #1 pass D ranking due to the strength (or lack thereof) of schedule.

But I have to give them credit. And give Dallas’ offense a little bit of a break. They are a good defense. I certainly don’t feel good putting up only 7 points against them and being shut out for 57 minutes. But keeping in mind that they are actually a tough D helps keep it in perspective a little bit. And the offense made the drive when it counted, and put it the points it needed to for the win, thanks to an over solid outing by our defense and a couple missed FGs by Suisam.
