We've Got A Bully...It's Time To "Go Ralphie"
The Cowboys have a good ol' fashion schoolyard bully and they need to take him down. The bully's name is "Blitz".
Through yesterday's games, Blitz has come after Romo 148 times, the most in the NFL. Almost 50% of the time Romo goes to pass, Blitz comes after him. The next closest percentage? 38%.
(Had a nice spreadsheet here with Blitz stats but OCC's blitz research is much better)
NFL Matchup also talked about the blitz against Romo this past weekend.
Is it because we're pass happy and don't run enough? I don't think that's it. Through yesterday, when it comes to pass attempts the Cowboys are actually middle of the pack ranked 16th with 33 attempts per game compared to the Pats in the top slot with 40 attempts per game.
Rushing wise, we're middle of the pack again at 17th with 26 attempts per game compared to the Jets at the top with 35 attempts per game.
Overall, the balance is there so why are the Cowboys seeing Blitz almost every other time they pass? Because teams know they can get away with it and we aren't making the plays that make them pay.
So far this season, we're horrible on 3rd down. We rank 17th in the league with a conversation rate of 39%. Now for most teams, this would be a good day at the office but look at where the Cowboys have been for the past 4 seasons:
| 2008 | 43% | 9th |
| 2007 | 42% | 10th |
| 2006 | 49% | 2nd |
| 2005 | 40% | 11th |
We need to make Blitz pay but we just aren't. Remember how Romo to Witten in blitz situations was money? Not much payoff this year. Remember Crayton making clutch snags from the slot with the blitz coming fast? Nothing to get excited about so far this year. Remember how Romo used his legs to get out of trouble and move the chains? Well Romo's been sacked 23 times already this year. Compare that to his career high sack total of 24 in 2007. "The player" also contributed as a threat to making opponents think twice before they brought the house the last couple of years. This year's installment isn't a threat to anything. I take that back. There's a threat that he'll actually make a play in a key situation.
In 2007, Romo threw for 4211 yards with 19 picks. He had 520 pass attempts and was only blitzed 70 times. That's a blitz percentage of only 13% compared to almost 50% this year. Defenses don't give any QB, especially a young one, that kind of respect. It's earned. The Cowboys made defenses pay for bringing heat. They learned that if they bullied us with the blitz, they'd get their teeth kicked in...not so this year.
The word is out and www.blitzthehellouttaromo.com is the favorite site with d-coordinators because for 10 games now, we've shown them that there's little or no price to pay more often than not. There's more of a chance that the drive will stop with a sack, incomplete pass, penalty or turnover than we are to move the chains or burn them deep.
Blitz the bully has given us a wedgie, bloodied our noses, given us a fat lip, talked about our mama's and taken our lunch money. It's time to stand up to the bully. It's time to make him pay. It's time to "Go Ralphie". Until we do, Romo may as well be walking around with a "Kick Me" sign taped to his back.

Totally Disagree
You have a point, but it is one sided and I have to bring up interceptions. How many times over the last few years of Romo have we seen him try and make something out of nothing, only to have a pass picked off? OK, I don’t have the stat’s and basically am not going to take the time to look them up, but I have seen Romo take a lot of “good” sacks this season. Sacks are acceptable, especially if it keeps the other team from gettin the ball. Sacks up, interceptions down…you do the math. Seems to me that most of us would prefer Romo having a season high sack total and a season low intereception total. Those two variables equal more wins! Just an opinion, but I think a warranted one!
PEACE!
I hear where you're coming from CF and appreciate your view
Here’s some stats. The year that Romo had 24 sacks he also had a career high 19 picks BUT he also threw for over 4211 yards (3rd in the NFL) and we finished 13-3. Romo got the “gun slinger” moniker and we lived with the sacks and the picks because, well…we were winning…and not by close margins either. We were 4th in the league in scoring that year.
In 2007, Romo attempted 520 passes and was only blitzed 70 times! That’s a blitz percentage of about 13% compared to almost 50% this year. Defenses knew if they blitzed, they’d pay.
Thanks for bringing this up, need to add this info to the write up.

Hahahha
love it. my family can all recite every line from that classic.
I have noticed a new resurgence in Cowboy hating in 2007, which can only mean one thing- We're back.

The book on Romo seems to be
take Witten out of the game and blitz on 3rd down. IMO Dallas needs to use Felix more on swing passes and dump offs.Get him the ball in the open and let him make plays.
How bout dem Frogs!!!!
I would like to see more passes to the RB trio
through 10 games they have but 33 catches; respectable but not nearly enough in my opinion considering our talented trio and considering the fact that Romo is blitzed so effing often. Aren’t screens supposed to be the right playcall when blitzed? I swear I’ve seen about 5 screens so far this season. Good grief, Felix has 5 (!) receptions.
Fwiw, out of all the major contenders, only the Giants have fewer receptions by running backs than Dallas. Not sure what this means exactly, but I think the RBs should be more involved in the passing offense. Even if it means taking passes away from the WRs.
agreed
Romo is going to need to dump off the ball this game for sure. I expect to see good coverage and you know the defense is going to try to hit Romo early and often.. They want to see how tender that back is.

Oakland's D is not good against run.
We may see a repeat of the Wash game with a heavy dose of MB3 and Felix. I hope the results arn’t the same.
How bout dem Frogs!!!!
Totally agree
Nice write-up, Nate, and rec’d. Perhaps it’s time Garrett dug out the book he and all other red-headed Princeton alumni were given on their graduation day: “Effective Strategies Against Thugs”.

Screens and other RB passes would help, I think.
What happened to getting Felix Jones the ball in space? Every time I see him, it seems like he’s going up the middle. How about some swing passes or something. Choice and Barber are dangerous and effective on those plays as well.

Slants
One reason we aren’t performing well against the blitz— Romo seems incapable of throwing a decent slant route. Everything is way off target and receivers are either stretching or diving to try and make the grab. Hit a receiver in stride on one of those, and he will be off to the races.
That is the blitz hot read and Romo must start making those throws.
Nice write up!
and rec’d.
I agree totally. Until the offense finds a cure for the blitzes, they will continue to see them. I also think the RBs are the cure.

This is on Jason
Rest Witten when needed, use two TEs (Phillips and Telly) and sometimes let one or both block
Fully utilize all three RBs, in the flats especially, but continuing with the draws
Expose the middle of the field with either RBs or TEs (wish we could trust RW in his alleged “possession receiver” mode, but we can’t)
It all comes back to play calling. Not run/pass percentage, but situational smarts.
I’m not yet confident Jason can do that. We’ll see.
and btw
No spreadsheet needed. If you have eyes, use them.
Uh..Guys...
Could some of the problem be Romo goes shotgun a awful lot, which kind of forces the D to come after him, it also limits his play options to 90% pass with no real playaction pressure. Also Romo under center allows screens, rollouts, designed bootleg runs and a real draw play threat on 3rd&5,a flea-flicker is impossible out of the shotgun.
Looking at the play-by-play 3rd down is shotgun 95% of Garretts playcalling,Using shotgun in a hurry up/no-huddle I can understand but it also explains why the good Defenses seem to know exactly what JG’s gameplan is.
