Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

offseason moves

its never too early to talk about what we need to improve on in the offseason so ill start

1. nick folk...needs to be cut. we drafted a kicker last year that leads the leagues in touchbacks, if he can kick it out the endzone on kickoffs, he can make 45 yard field goals, something nick folk hasnt been able to do all year. this offseason we have to start forming buehler into a place kicker if not sooner

2. get a kickoff returner, its a big difference in the nfl from starting your drive at the 20 or at the 35. we have cycled through many players, felix, austin, ogeltree, etc. It looks like we found our punt returner in patrick crayton who has looked great this year so all we need is a kick returner.

3. the draft, we can do many different things in this draft but this year we have a 1st round pick and what i would do with this pick is take terrence (mount) cody out of alabama. lets face it, marcus spears is a bust and isnt doing anything and should be gone after this year because his contract is up. Now with spears gone we can move ratliff to LE which is his natural position. Cody is a 6'5 365lb run stopper that who is absolutely dominant and will help us stop the run even better then we already do. After the first round i think we start preparing for the future by drafting oline and dbacks especially safeties because hamlin and sensabaugh are both injury prone and our best backup saftey is alan ball? come on

free agency- as i said before kickoff returner, but besides that i say we lay low in free agency maybe get some backups but i would conserve our cap until someone is out there we love or really need because right now we dont have many glaring needs.

coaching- i am a wade phillips fan and i think its unfair he is on the "hot seat" when his team is in first place in the division and is 8-3. But that being said i am also sick and tired of losing in the playoffs if we don't advance at least one round in the playoffs let alone make the playoffs i think he should be fired. If that happens i would love to see mike shanahan on our sidelines, but we could also go with jason garret or any other young coach out there which looked like a good idea last year (ravens, falcons, dolphins all made the playoffs) but now its not looking so good (ravens, falcons, dolphins, would all miss the playoffs right now).

We must find a left tackle.

According to www.profootballfocus.com, which is one of the few sites that has in depth player by player breakdowns, Flo had given up 6 sacks, 5 hits, and 23 pressures this year, in addition to 9 penalties, prior to Thursday’s game. That is just not that great. I know that he may be the best option that we currently have, but I think he is average at best, and declining. If Free isn’t the answer, one needs to be found, and quickly. I think Brewster is being groomed as a tackle, actually, so maybe they think he’s the guy.

Another need is playmaking DBs. As well as the defense is playing this year, they are still terrible at creating turnovers. The biggest reason for that is lack of interceptions. Mike Jenkins is tied for 17th in the league with 3 picks, and has as many as every other DB on the team. Combined. And the lack of picks is not due to them just being absolute shut down defenders, either.

Has anyone seen The Blind Side yet?

I just did and I loved it. Feel-good story of the year…

agreed

our dbacks have alot of potential and will get better but the oline needs to change im sick and tired of hearing flozells name getting called every drive, hesa also 34 we have the oldest oline in the league and im not too excited about our backups (free, proctor, holland, brewster) we need to improve at that position in the draft

Let' worry about this year

please. so much can happen before this year is over that this post is simply stupid. Maybe we need a certain position yea whatever, what if a key player goes done for a year n a half, or his career. 1 game changes everything; Let’s enjoy being in 1st and enjoy the rest of this season before we even think about next year. there are teams that should think about next year but those include Detroit, Cleveland, Oakland, ect……. not Dallas, not yet.

Texas Stadium has a hole in the roof so God can watch his favorite team play football.

???????

Spears a bust? Folk needs to be cut? Please, put down that pipe…seriously.

Also, a 6’5’’ DT is too tall to play in a 3-4.

I've heard that

But I think It’s a misnomer. The question is leverage and staying low, and there’s an argument to be made for that, but keep in mind that our current NT is 6’4, 300. He’s built like an end and makes it work. Cody is probably the biggest, strongest defensive player that’s come out of the draft since Ngata (Excepting BJ Raji on strength… possibly) and nose tackles have a very low bust rate.

Do you really

believe that Cody will be there when it’s our turn to pick? No way that’s going to happen.

Last year Folk was near perfect.........

……and absolutely CLUTCH. I think he’s still battling the injury to his hip in the off-season and some confidence issues as a result. That does NOT warrant cutting him, talk about a knee-jerk reaction. Buehler does have a strong leg and is terrific at what he’s doing, and at some point he might get a chance to prove he can kick clutch FG’s in the NFL, but at this point he hasn’t prove anything, except that he can kick it into the end zone. That’s not enough for any sane person to kick to the curb a Pro-Bowl caliber question after a couple of misses. As for Spears, he is what he is; he’s a great run stopping DE in a 3-4 defense. He’s not going to get a lot of sacks, that’s not his job, he’s supposed to tie of the OL so the LB’s can get through. And he does it well. As long as he isn’t trying to break the bank in FA I’d be all in favor of keeping him. Trust me, he won’t be lacking for suitors.

Last year Folk missed a 40 yarder against the Cardinals

right before halftime. The game ended up going to OT (granted, on his 50 yd FG with no time left). But if he had made that FG before halftime, then maybe he kicks the game-winning FG at the end of regulation, there’s no OT, and Romo and McBriar don’t get injured…

The Knights season may have just ended, but the Cowboys year is just begining!

Doubtful

Cody won’t go that high. He’s not even the best player at his position.

I hope Dallas plays it smart and takes the BPA out of O-line or D-line

You can't stop Patrick Crayton, you can only hope to contain him.

by APerfectStar on Nov 28, 2009 1:25 AM CST up reply actions

Suh

I agree.

Cody, I’d say mid to late 1st round. His stamina is still questionable. IMHO

Good news for Dallas-

It’s a good year to be an NFL team in need of talent at the defensive tackle position as the 2010 senior crop is one of the best to come along in years. Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh leads this year’s talented class, while Penn State’s Jared Odrick, Alabama’s Terrence Cody and Syracuse’s Arthur Jones all look like big-time prospects in their own right.

Gerald McCoy

Is a beast as well.
Personally, though, the guy I’d love to see us get is Rolando McClain the Middle linebacker. We’d probably have to trade up to the 15 range, but I think It’d be worth it.

by Conjunction on Nov 28, 2009 6:32 AM CST up reply actions

McCoy is a beast, no doubt

As soon as he declares, he’s a top 10 pick.

McClain looks like he’ll be the next dominate ILB. I’d love to end up with a player of his caliber. Like you said he’ll probably go mid 1st, so at the least he’ll push another quality player down the draft board. Dallas could have several quality prospects to choose from when they’re on the clock.

You can't stop Patrick Crayton, you can only hope to contain him.

by APerfectStar on Nov 28, 2009 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah if Cody's not taken in the top 15

there will be a serious reason why and then we won’t want him

by Gobroks on Nov 28, 2009 6:07 PM CST up reply actions

Oh and as far as coaches (if Wade is gone)

Keep an eye on Jim Harbaugh. He’s the darling of college football right now and will be #1 on any college list, and VERY high on most NFL lists.

by mhuff13 on Nov 27, 2009 4:32 PM CST reply actions

But he's also the bro of John Harbaugh

The d-bag who said the Cowboys are everything that’s wrong with the NFL.

by Joon on Nov 28, 2009 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

Not that that makes him less qualified

Just using the opportunity to call John Harbaugh a douche.

by Joon on Nov 28, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Give me a left tackle in the first round and Jacoby Ford in the second

and I will be very happy.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Marcus Spears is no bust

And I hope we keep him around. I have no idea where all this “Spears is a bum” talk comes from.

....

We need Oline… That should be first and second priority.

Although I disagree on your assessment of Ball (I don’t think he is a bad backup) I do agree if we get the chance to draft a playmaking safety we should consider it.

I think you may be jumping the gun on Folk.

I do agree we will need d-line but not because Spears is a bust but because he will leave this year, his contract is up and we aren’t going to pay him what someone else will.

David Buehler was 9 of 13 his senior year at USC

Including 2 of 5 from 40-49 and no attempts from 50+. I wouldn’t put future games on the shoulders of those kinds of stats, even if Buehler is a beast at everything else. I’d keep Folk where he is and trust that he will work his problems out.

by Joon on Nov 28, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

At this point, though, it's the same thing.

Folk is 15 of 21, including 4 of 9 from 40-49. If your kicker is unreliable anyway, why waste not only a roster spot, but a game day spot on him?

by Baked Potato Soup on Nov 28, 2009 10:46 PM CST up reply actions

Being able to kick the ball really hard, really far

Has nothing to do with accuracy. Just because he has 20+ touchbacks doesn’t mean he can make 45 yard FG’s

by mhuff13 on Nov 28, 2009 10:04 PM CST reply actions

Yea but we can't count on Buehler either

If he was only 40% from 40-49 yards the last time he was an actual kicker

by mhuff13 on Nov 28, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not saying that we can.

I’m just saying that Folk is currently 44% from that range, and he doesn’t kick off. So why tie up a roster spot and a spot on the 45 man roster for a guy that isn’t much more reliable than Buehler, who at least does kickoffs well? Maybe Buehler would be more accurate with NFL level coaching and kicking in domes a good deal of the time.

I doubt that a change gets made this year, but if Folk hasn’t broken this slump by the start of next season, I doubt that he makes the team.

by Baked Potato Soup on Nov 29, 2009 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

I agree about next year

I just think that Folk is in a funk this year. The guy was nearly automatic before. But unfortunately, I don’t know if Buehler is the answer if Folk isn’t…
