Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Quincyyyyy's highly anticipated 7 round mock and Draft Notes (OT edition)

Update:  I was alerted that because of the Holland trade we don't have a 5th this year.  So lets just assume that we traded Roy for a 5th and a bag of chips.

The draft notes are below my updated mock:

1. OT Anthony Davis Scarlet Knight

http://www.scarletknights.com/football/images/2009/preview/davis.jpg

Doug Free has done an admirable job replacing Colombo, but Davis, a junior, is more talented and can step in immediately and replace Flozell if the Cowboys decide to part ways with him.  However, the interview process will be crucial as Davis does have some character issues.

2. DE/DT Vince Oghobaase Blue Devil

http://image.cdnl3.xosnetwork.com/pics24/400/HG/HGJEOEECKJYZGDK.20081110162547.jpg

Injuries and questionable strength will keep this big athletic lineman from being taken earlier.

3. CB/FS/PR Akwasi Owusu-Ansah Hawk

http://www.psacsports.org/images/2009/8/25/rp_primary_Owusu-Ansah2.jpg

This talented division II corner has good size and can contribute as a return man.

4.  WR/KR Marcus Easley Husky

This wide receiver caught everyone by surprise when he suddenly broke out in early October.  He is big, fast, and a playmaker.  No I'm not talking about Miles Austin.  I'm talking about Marcus Easley, who is climbing the draft boards as we speak.

5. NT Torrell Troup Golden Knight

http://www.centralfloridafuture.com/polopoly_fs/1.1863677!image/3121526553.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_240/3121526553.jpg

Big space eater on UCF's number 2 ranked rush defense.

6. C/G Reggie Stephens Cyclone

http://www.football.com/UserFiles/Image/NCAA/iowa%20state/reggie%20stephens%20iowa%20banner.jpg

One of the biggest centers in the country at 330 lbs.

7. FS/SS Jordan Lake Bear

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/bay/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/1392711.jpeg

Not very athletic but he is well built and a good tackler.  He would be at the very least be a good special teams player.

Star-divide

Quick notes (OT edition):

- Rivals has Anthony Davis down in their OL rankings this week for a bad game against Louisville a couple of weeks ago.

- Draft Tek's 3 round consensus mock draft not only has us taking Davis in the first round, but it also has us taking another tackle in the second round whom I really like, Jason Fox.

- Speaking of Jason Fox, Scott Wright of draftcountdown.com has him as one of his hot prospects this week.

- ProFootballWeekly just came out with their top 5 senior and top 5 underclassmen o-line rankings.

- According to CBS sports the big agile division II tackle Jared Veldheer is now bordering on being a mid round pick.  From what I have read he is supposed to have as much physical talent as any tackle in this draft.  Hopefully I'll be able to watch him play in the Texas vs. the Nation game.

- Another division II LT is also turning heads: Tony Washington out of Abilene Christian who Scott Wright surprisingly has ranked as a top 5 OT prospect.  He'll be playing in the East West shrine game.

- If you want to learn more about these prospects and UMass's OT Vladmir Ducasse go to Wright's blog entry on the 24th.  In regards to Ducasse, he is considered by most to be a guard at the next level, but Wright apparently thinks he has the feet to potentially play left tackle.  His big body might be a good fit in our scheme.  Ducasse hasn't accepted an invitation to an all star game to my knowledge.

I like Davis

And from what I’ve read, the makeup issues appear to be overblown and mostly a result of innocent mistakes/miscalculations. Good pick.

Quick question.

Do you evaluate the needs of every team when you do these, or do you look at Cowboys needs and draft position and formulate picks from there?

by Baked Potato Soup on Nov 30, 2009 2:00 PM CST reply actions

Admittedly I know very little about the needs of other teams, so I just go based off player rankings from various sites

NFLDC, CBS, Draft Tek etc. in addition to whatever I have seen personally from these players. But a lot of players (especially from smaller programs) I have not had an opportunity to evaluate, so with those players I rely heavily on the rankings.

In terms of drafting based on need, I have a small list of starter positions Cowboys need to draft (in this case DL and OT) and whomever is the BPA from those positions I pick in the early rounds. Then I just pick players from there on out who fit the Cowboys system and fall within the pick’s range.

Like I have seen Davis, Easley, Troup, and Lake in action

the others I haven’t. I have been trying to get a glimpse of Oghobaase, but it always seems like he is out with an injury whenever Duke is on tv.

I live in NJ and love me some Rutgers football. Davis is a beast and will be the second first rounder to come from RU. There will be nothing I would love more than to see Davis with a star on his helmet. He is the next Flozell.

Thanks, Yeah I think Akwasi Owusu-Ansah will be playing in Texas vs. the nation

Hopefully I can find some way to watch it this year. I wish ESPN would pick up those all star games. I know the senior bowl is nationally televised on a major network, but the shrine and texas vs. the nation are usually on weird networks I think.

Big centers are in!!!

Dallas needs to get an NT earlier than you have here.

I think Dallas may look to sign a FA tackle too.

I’d like a space eater like they mentioned on ESPN the other day. Though they showed Jay on there as u may already know, I swear we should get a space eater to spell him from time to time. 2nd rounder then go O-line again or WR. Plz Jesus let Wade and Jerry select a Jamaal Williams/Vince Wilfork/Shaun Rodgers/Casey Hampton type NT or ate least someone close to it!!!

by CodeNamedG on Nov 30, 2009 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

If we are really in the market for a NT then Hampton and Wilfork will prolly be available

With Rat there is no reason to draft one high, and like I said if we really want to move Rat to DE then premier NT’s will be available in FA.

by quincyyyyy on Nov 30, 2009 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

Mentioned it before

but, Jerry seems to be very proud of the production he is getting out of his lower tier FA like Brooking, Sensi and Igor. I’m not sure if you will see him doing the big splash again for a while.

by oldboysfan on Nov 30, 2009 8:33 PM CST up reply actions

justing pointing out we are not likely to draft a NT high because if we really want one

we can get a good veteran in FA.

And Hampton is getting old and won’t be that expensive.

by quincyyyyy on Nov 30, 2009 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

Hampton will be a solid FA

I think he knows he won’t be the full-time NT, and we can actually get Ratliff some reps at DE occasionally.

Wilfork, unfortunately for Dallas, is going to demand a huge contract…and deservedly so.

In that case...

If possible I’d like to take Hampton and still draft one in his mold somewhere in the mid rounds (330+lbs). Rat could still start and we’d prep the rook for the future. Cut Siavii (he’s old and hasn’t done much good or getting any better)…

God 1st, Family Always & Dallas Cowboys 4 Life!!!!!

by CodeNamedG on Dec 2, 2009 6:39 AM CST up reply actions

Hampton is older and NT's wear down once they hit the wrong side of 30

I’d look to another guy in the Sammie Lee Hill mold. A younger, fresher tree stump to come in and (maybe) eventually replace Rat at the nose so he can face fewer double-teams and actually make some plays from the DE position.

I’ve said that Rat can be just as good at DE as Seymour has been.

Any idea who would start at NT if Rat went down?

Siavii

Who would start if Romo went down? The backup is never as good as the starter. But Hampton might be a good fit because he might be willing to play 50% to 60% of the snaps.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 3, 2009 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

If Siavii was ever forced to play more than spot duty, we'd be sunk

As for your depth comment, I disagree.

Many teams do a great job of developing depth at key positions.

Since we’re talking about NT, I’ll use Baltimore as an example. If Gregg goes down, Ngata plays and vice versa.

NT is THE critical position in the 3-4 and to not have a big body to spell Rat has been costly in past Decembers as he has worn down.

Just want to throw this idea out there for you guys to think about:

considering there is an already good talent level of seniors plus the fact that draftniks are expecting a flood of underclassmen; would it make sense to trade a future first for a second round pick this year?

by quincyyyyy on Nov 30, 2009 7:58 PM CST reply actions

I think this team is close, and with such a deep draft this year an extra pick might be what we need.

Think Jerry will stay the course

with quality character guys. With an uncapped year, if one of those pop up in the second that fills a need and is a good value I could see that a possibility.

by oldboysfan on Nov 30, 2009 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Davis hasn't done anything really bad

when I say character concerns I’m saying maturity issues.

by quincyyyyy on Nov 30, 2009 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

Not meaning Davis

those are not even issues. As far as Hampton goes, if the price was right it would be a good pickup until they can develope a project pick.

by oldboysfan on Nov 30, 2009 9:39 PM CST reply actions

Hampton will turn 33 at the start of the 2010 season

I bet we could sign him for around 3-4 mil a year on a 3 year contract. Then we could draft a late round prospect to develop.

Nice to see my ACU boys getting some love

Even though we had a disappointing season this year, its been sick seeing Bernard Scott and Johnny Knox make major contributions to their teams. This is my sophomore year at ACU and we love seeing our D2 guys get looks in the NFL and prove they can play with the big boys

by longhorn3621 on Dec 1, 2009 3:37 PM CST reply actions

I like both those OT's you mention

Anthony Davis would be my preference, but I have a feeling he will go in the top half of the 1st.

Jason Fox is my fall back. Has the size, good feet and played at a big program. Plus he’s from Ft Worth originally.

Also interested to see that big guy from the tiny D2 program, Jared Veldheer.

You can't stop Patrick Crayton, you can only hope to contain him.

made some nice tackles, but looking at his stats he really became a ball hawk this year.

Interesting comment by Mocking Dan on Nate Allen

The way USF’s defense is set up Allen is not given a lot of opportunities to make plays. So he may even be a little underrated because of that.

Tony Washington

Good call on Tony Washington. As sports editor for ACU I spent a lot of time watching Tony since he is considered to be one of a few NFL prospects at Abilene Christian University. Tony is tall and athletic with good feet and technique. He’s a little on the lean side and will need to add some bulk in order to hang in the NFL, but definitely worth a look in the later rounds of the draft. He had an inconsistent year and actually played much better as a junior. Will need some coaching and some time in the weight room before he’ll contribute in the NFL.

by TK19 on Dec 2, 2009 1:37 PM CST reply actions

pick thoughts

While Davis should still be there with our ‘boys pick near the end of the 1st round, it’s doubtful he will be an NFL caliber left tackle; Brown of USC would be a better fit but may be gone by our pick; worth a trade up though.
Taking Oghobaase in the 2nd is a reach, as he should slide to the 3rd or maybe even early 4th; with Bowen playing well not sure I would spent a 2 on a DE; but if so suggest Neal out of Purdue; similar size and faster;
I hope we take a safety at 2; either Lewis from Vandy or Wright of FSU (assuming he declares); seems we have our SS with Sensabaugh; now we need a FS since Hamlin ain’t cutting it.

Just tell me that there's going to be an actual punt returner taken this draft

All those special-teamers last year, and nobody could beat out Crayton? One of the worst things to happen to Dallas this year was Patty getting those two meaningless punt return TDs—fooling everybody into thinking he’s a legit returner. The guy hasn’t made a single play on his own in the past two years back there, and he’s always a muff waiting to happen in crunch time…

by greatwhitenorth on Dec 2, 2009 8:13 PM CST reply actions

Jacoby Ford is the guy for my money...

Give me him in the second round and I will be a happy man.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Dec 2, 2009 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

That's who I was going to suggest

plus he adds some more speed to the offense. He’s an NCAA national track champion, and plays WR full time for Clemson.

Remember, speed kills in the NFL. Anyway, here’s my two guys, CJ Spiller and Jacoby Ford, both will kill you with speed. Both play offense, where we need more speed, and both are KR and PR. CJ is a RB, though, so I guess I have to give up seeing him here, but Jacoby, though….

by mdlusk on Dec 3, 2009 3:10 AM CST up reply actions

Yep...

I watched him in person at the GT-Clemson game and he had his way with the back end of the secondary. He had one long TD and if it wasn’t for a holding call he would have a 40 yard over the shoulder catch to put Clemson in position for the game winning field goal.
That is why I like him; he has speed and is actually used to playing WR (not a project). \

Then again, I would really appreciate it if he has a terrible game this Saturday seeing how I need the Wreck to get back on track to the Orange Bowl.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

What do you know about this DT from Oregan St.

I believe he is a Samoan dude whose name begins with a P. Damm, I saw him last night and was impressed with his speed and strenght. I dont know anything about him but he certainly jumped out at me.

by squidlo97 on Dec 4, 2009 11:48 AM CST reply actions

don't know much about him

haven’t watched any oregon state games this year. But it seems he is supposed to be a first day pick in next year’s draft. However, I don’t think he can play in a 3-4 just looking at his height weight. 6’1 288 is too small.

I know DB isn't the most pressing need

But watching the UT-Nebraska game yesterday, the player that really caught my eye (besides Suh) was the Huskers CB Prince Amukamara. IMO, he was probably the second-best defensive player for Nebraska behind Suh, great in both pass and run D. He has good size (6-1, 200) and decent speed (4.5), and pretty good instincts, judging from what I saw yesterday and his 5 picks on the season.
