Sound the Alarm Bells!

Here we go again... it's after Thanksgiving and the best quarterback never to win a playoff game is already off to Vegas. The biggest game of the season looms, yet the nightmares of Decembers past continue to be ignored.

This week in New Jersey the Dallas Cowboys can stake claim to the tournament; unfortunately, Romo treats these weeks like an audition for the Bachelor. Tex doesn't want to know which divorced skank celebrity reality star will be on the trip home from Sin City, but the sky is falling, again and nobody gives a damn.

A loss to the Giants and a five game slide to end the season is probable. Then again, it won't be the worst thing ever to happen to the slippery fingered Bill Buckner Romo. The Cowboys, under the beleaguered Wade Phillips, could have secured a playoff spot with a win against the Packers... but they failed to show up. Chances are, these fair-weathered underachievers will toss this opportunity away as well.

It's time to sound the alarm bells.

Tex has a point - Not sure why everyone is just completely dismissing this...

Was Romo in Vegas for a charity event? Yes. Did he do any partying while he was out there? I don’t know, I wasn’t there, but there’s certainly no shortage of things to do there if you’re a 29 year old male. Frankly, whether he found time to have fun in Vegas or not is kind of irrelevant.

See, here’s the thing… Whether the “charity event” was in Las Vegas or Des Moines, Iowa, he’s still missing extremely valuable time preparing for a huge showdown against an NFC East rival. Would Peyton Manning sacrifice valuable preparation time to be in Vegas for a charity event during the season? Quite simply, no, he wouldn’t. Romo has a history to go along with the reputation that he may not be as committed to winning as some of the other great, elite QB’s in the league, and this is just yet another example.

Obviously I’m not a Cowboys fan (and I definitely enjoyed reading this story when it initially surfaced), but I don’t get how everyone can be defending Romo’s actions here. Vegas (and whatever Romo’s charity is) will still be there in February, will they not? Why lose valuable time and further feed the perception that you don’t care about winning before a HUGE game in December, which, oh by the way, historically hasn’t exactly been your best month? It’s stupid. If the Cowboys lose, watch this story become larger than life.

Well Bye,dawk I tip my hat to you

You managed to suck in a lot of our members into this little discussion brought forth by one of our most one-sided commentors (Tex); and I mean one sided because he does not respond to other commentors he just blares his opinion. BTB fans, consider yourself sucked, look at the current situation we have two individuals who have the opinion that Romo and Austin should not be in Vegas because of the this week’s game. The situation will play out one of two ways, they win it is forgotten, if they lose then the story becomes a mini Cabo and the december discussion gets even bigger.

The topic here is just a way to pass the time, what ever opinions that are exchanged here are irrelevant to the outcome of the game; so feel free to respond or not. I will lurk and survey the traffic jam that bye, dawk and Tex have created.

Vegas-Gate: Perception is Reality

“And you don’t go to Cabo the week before a playoff game,” said Super Bowl Champion Troy Aikman. “You just don’t do it.”

“It may not have taken away from his preparations….but to say, ‘I don’t worry about perception,’ you better worry about perception, because it’s a big part of making it through some very difficult times.”

Two years later, ironically against the same team, Romo is in Vegas the weekend before the biggest game of the year. And, instead of learning from his mistakes, the best quarterback never to win a playoff game has to bring smiling Miles Austin down with him.

by Montecito Tex on Dec 1, 2009 11:54 AM CST reply actions

I agree that the trip isn't great for his perception

but I don’t think it will manifest itself on the field so I don’t really care. If the rest of the media wants to make Romo out to be someone who doesn’t care then that is their choice. He has done enough to prove to me that he cares and I only worry about how he plays on the field.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Dec 1, 2009 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

I f Romo didn't care, he wouldn't even be in the league, much less be a top rated qb

He was an undrafted FA from a division 1-AA school, those kind of players either care like no other, or they never make it, it’s really that simple.

no clue

you know tex and bd, you both have no clue how much time any qb in the nfl spends watching film during week to get ready for next opponent. so how do u know how much film mcnabb watches? just because he’s not going to vegas doesn’t mean he’s watching film whole time. the truth is none of us know. so it is an argument without merit, imo.

by maxdout on Dec 1, 2009 1:14 PM CST reply actions

I have no idea how much film McNabb watches. None.

I have no idea how much film Tony Romo watches. None.

I have no idea how much film Peyton Manning watches. None.

I do know Tony Romo went to Cabo the week before a playoff game. I do know that after the 44-6 game Tony Romo said “If this is the worst thing that ever happens to me, then I’ll have lived a pretty good life.” And I now know Tony Romo went to Vegas (even if for a charity event) the week before a crucial NFC East game against a team in which he had a horrible game earlier in the season. So excuse me for maybe questioning whether his drive to win is comparable to that of a Peyton Manning.

by JimmyK on Dec 1, 2009 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

Roger Staubach's thoughts...
“I’m a Tony Romo guy, but from a fan’s standpoint it’s a mistake,” Captain America told me yesterday from his commercial real estate office at Jones Lang LaSalle in North Dallas. “Perception is reality, and it just doesn’t look good. I don’t agree with needing to get away from football for a couple of days. I think there’s crucial value in keeping the football mind-set. Coach Landry would have never given us three days off at this time of year. This is the playoff drive, and time is precious. He would have us at the facility doing something, maybe just running around in shorts. But something to keep us together, to keep our minds on football.”

It just depends

If we beat the Gints, no one will give a flying fark about Romo’s Vegas trip. If we lose, people can latch onto it and make a big deal.

BTW, Favre took the entire training camp and preseason off but it didn’t really hurt his play when he finally showed up. Endless “preparation” is overrated when these guys have been playing football for so many years.

For anyone there that is not a baseball fans it has been really tough since Dr. J retired. Some have turned to the Steelers in desperation; but Pittsburgh is such a depressing place that many in Philadelphia want to deny that they really have to share the same state. We may be missing the point!

This argument could go back and forth and I actually agree with the point that I don’t want my QB traveling to Vegas with a huge game coming up. Yet we are missing another little fact. Romo just injured his back less than two weeks ago. Now he is riding on a plane when he doesn’t really have to. I don’t know about you but sitting in a plane isn’t the best thing for your back, especially if you were just having spasms in the game! Precaution in this case would seem to be prudent.

a break is a break no matter where you take it. we’ll see come sunday how much it really mattered. none i bet. one extra day will not make a difference. he knows the giants already. what the hell does he need extra day to study film on his day off? huh? it’s called a day off for a reason. no one questions you about where you go during your time off. where you go is your business. anyway, it’s the idea of a break and it’s your opinion that going to vegas isn’t a good idea. but it wasnt’ during week of preparing for a game either.

by maxdout on Dec 1, 2009 7:33 PM CST reply actions

All of this vegas talk is a bunch of bs

just like all the talk in pre season about the big hd screen hanging above jerry’s world field. Bye dawk has a punt hit that screen yet??? You spent plenty of time talking about what a joke it is and how it will affect the game. Total bs..

by scandrick32 on Dec 1, 2009 8:19 PM CST reply actions

Incorrect...

I said that a ball “could” hit the screen, not “would” hit the screen (and by the way, need I remind you that one did hit it in the preseason). My problem with the screen was that it had the potential to affect the outcome of a game if a ball hit it. That’s all.

Has it happened yet? No. Is that surprising to me? Not at all. Can it still happen? Sure, why not? It already did.

Anyway, if Romo skips town to Vegas for a day rather than take advantage of an extra day to prepare for a divisional opponent, will that affect the outcome of the game? Maybe, maybe not. You know what? Let’s officially go with “probably not.” If it’s my QB though, do I want him doing everything in his power to win? Sure do. Do I want him wasting a day of extra preparation in Vegas? Sure don’t. Not sure why this is such a difficult concept to grasp.

by Nisri on Dec 2, 2009 7:30 AM CST reply actions

Romo is wrong, again

I agree with Tex and Dawk. Romo simply doesn’t learn from his mistakes. Nothing good could possibly come from this little jaunt to Vegas. At best, it is a significant distraction. And if the Cowboys lose on Sunday, it becomes a huge controversy/distraction. Flat out, the supposed Leader of this or any other professional football team shouldn’t be doing anything that has even the perception of not taking the game seriously. And despite the fact that most of the guys on this Board choose to interpret this as no big deal, it is. Good grief, Romo has FIVE months of off-season to engage in this type of nonsense. If you want to help out charity during the season, then pen out a big fat check.

I am disappointed but not surprised by Romo’s behavior. However, what really surprises me is that most of the BTB community is OK with this despite the fact that two of our biggest and most respected Cowboy heroes – Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman – are both on the record saying that these types of Vegas and Cabo distraction trips are wrong and damaging.

by Cowboy.Louie on Dec 2, 2009 8:29 AM CST reply actions

My position has nothing to do with hatred, as your repetitive posts continue to claim. I call it like I see it, both good and bad. Yur position is in the majority on this board but absolutely nowhere else. Perhaps that should give you pause for consideration.

Disagreeing with the “majority” doesn’t automatically translate into a more rational stance.

I’m glad to hear you’re “generally” aligned with Aikman and Staubach but what does that have to do with this post?

Tex is sounding alarm bells, cow bells, sirens and shooting emergency flares in the air because the QB spent 1 night in Vegas, at a charity event, when his next game was 9 days away!!

I don’t know if you’re aware, but Romo practiced fully on Monday and from what I hear he was sober and coherent.

romo is not wrong

the season is long, and the longest part of the season is coming up… if you have an extra day, no harm in taking a break and helping the less fortunate… so it happened to be in vegas, but hey… no headlines about romo out of control drunk or arrested or any other nonsense…. he relaxed for a night, and was back for treatment and practice the next day… i have no worries about this

and for all we know know, he watched film on the plane and in his hotel room (which i seriously do not doubt, something like that fits in with romo’s attitude towards work)

who on earth rec’s this crap?

by Terry on Dec 2, 2009 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

Well, there are a few misconceptions...

Apparently, there’s people that believe that Romo should have been this past weekend in the Ranch practicing for the Giants game this Sunday…

There’s people that believe that Romo should have been at the Ranch the weekend before the Playoff game against the Giants…

There’s people that believe that such travels mess with his focus.

Maybe.

But, what is he supposed to do?

You can say that Phillips is a cupcake kind of coach that allows this kind of thing… But you would be wrong…

In 2005 Bill Parcells was asked the same questions after he sent their players home for the weekend after a Thanksgiving loss to the Broncos instead of preparing for the crucial game against the Giants… Which was another defeat…

He said something along the lines of: “The weekend is like the weekend of a Bye Week, players aren’t allowed at our facilities, what am I supposed to do? I can only send them home and ask them to be smart about themselves”.

That’s Bill Parcells and he’s no cupcake.

For example, Eli Manning spent his weekend visiting doctors to get more information about his foot injury and resting. Because players aren’t allowed at their team facilities due to League rules the weekend of a bye week, the weekend following a Thanksgiving game and the weekend of a Playoff Bye week.

What’s Romo supposed to do? Ask his players to meet him at a park, or something like that, to train? Without the trainers and staff? That’s stupid, guys, you should inform yourselves before posting garbage.

How about resting his injured back? How about watching film? How about discussing gameplans and opposing personnel with his coaching staff? How about just being a leader and showing your teammates that you put in the extra time? There are any number of productive ways to prepare for an opponent without physically going to the team facilities. It’s 2009, and there’s some pretty good technology out there. The really great QB’s look for those little edges to win games. Peyton Manning has it. Even guys that didn’t quite have NFL ability but made up for it by taking every little edge they could get and won because of their will… like a Rich Gannon type. They looked for that edge. Romo doesn’t, plain and simple. He may really, really want to win, but wanting to win and doing everything in your power to win are 2 totally different things.

I’d want my QB eating, breathing, drinking football. Vegas can wait until March.

Let's put into consideration some thoughts:

1. Tex believed in Drew Henson. And now believes that he’s one of the best fast food restaurant managers.

2. Timmy Mac 2 (Bye Dawk) has been wrong so many times about the Cowboys so far, that I’m looking up to his “predictions”. You want examples of his brilliant expert opinion? You got them:

- The Jerry Tron will be peppered with punts!
- The Cowboys DBs can’t tackle (he was right for the first 2 of games)!
- Brooking will be a liability!
- The Cowboys only pass catching option is Witten, their best receiver would be a number 3 in Philly!
- The Cowboys DLine sucks!
- Spencer sucks!
- The Cowboys OLineman are older than Ents and suck!
- The Cowboys just suck!

Oh, Timmy, you can keep batting for .000.

Let's chill out with putting words in my mouth, dude. You're better than that. I'll address each and every one of these...
The Jerry Tron will be peppered with punts!

Never said that – I said that it could be hit by a punt, and potentially affect the outcome of a game, and therefore should be moved up. I never made some prediction that it would get hit.

The Cowboys DBs can’t tackle (he was right for the first 2 of games)!

As you said, they were atrocious early in the season and all of last season, but they’ve been better lately. I don’t remember anyone arguing with me on that one, by the way.

Brooking will be a liability!

Ugh. I was dead wrong there. He can play for my team any day.

The Cowboys only pass catching option is Witten, their best receiver would be a number 3 in Philly!

Definitely never said that. I killed Roy Williams regularly, and was 100% right. Here’s a post about the NFC East receivers…

http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2009/5/31/894166/nfc-east-rivals-wr-corps-complete

I even said “There’s a lot to like about Miles Austin.” Did I predict his ridiculous year? No, but who did?

The Cowboys DLine sucks!

Again, never said that. I praised Ratliff throughout the entire offseason. I said the Cowboys’ DE’s weren’t good… and they aren’t.

Spencer sucks!

He does.

The Cowboys OLineman are older than Ents and suck!

Never said they “sucked.” I said they were extremely old (and they absolutely are), and they have extremely questionable depth. What’s wrong about that?

I can kind of see that...

They win that game, Dallas is 9-2, Philly is 7-4 (5 seed) and NYG, Green Bay, and Atlanta are all 6-5. That’s essentially a 4-game cushion over GB and Atlanta, and minimally a 3-game cushion over the Giants.

Mathematically they wouldn’t have clinched it, but for all intents and purposes, they’d pretty much have it wrapped up.

What Romo Should Have Done...

As the calendar turned to December and with nightmares of Decembers past looming large over the Cowboys franchise, how nice would it have been to hear Courtney Lee Tony Romo issue the following statement on the Friday after Thanksgiving…

“You will never see any player in the NFL play as hard as I will play the rest of the season. You will never see someone push the rest of team as hard as I will push everyone the rest of the season. You will never see a team play harder than we will the rest of the season.”

Instead, the best quarterback never to win a playoff game takes a blossoming young player to Vegas before the biggest game of the season. Appalling. Unbelievable. Dimwitted. And another sign that this Cowboys team is a leaderless ship heading for the rocks of winter.

Tex

Tex just wants one more Super Bowl before wading off into the Montecito sunset.

Unlike Mickey and other writers who continually blow smoke up the a$$es of Cowboy fans, Tex isn’t afraid to call a spade a spade. And judging by the reaction, Tex has the pulse of the Cowboys community. Tex was the first to point out that Brian Stewart was the most unqualified coordinator in the NFL… BStew ended up costing the Cowboys a playoff spot in ’08, then was fired. While others brought out the anointing oil, Tex spotted the shortcoming of the best quarterback never to win a playoff game early on. And, Tex was the first one to sound the alarm bells when Romo went to Cancun, while the Tuna was making backroom deals, which were against NFL terms, to pry coaches away from the Cowboys during the playoff bye week.

Super Bowl quarterback don’t go to Vegas before big games. Dropping singles in a strip club is not a charitable contribution. And Wade Phillips is not a leader of men. Until this organization gets its act together, Tex will continue to sound the alarm bells.

by texstar on Dec 4, 2009 6:34 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry, Tex.

Peyton Manning was the “best quarterback never to win a playoff game”. until he won one. How many did it take, now? Five?

Now Romo is doomed to failure because he hasn’t won in his first two opportunities? What kind of logic is that?

You may be right about the Parcells stuff. You may be right about a lot of things. I have no way of knowing. But predicting Romo’s ultimate playoff record based on his first two attempts is more like projecting your biases.

"We'll see." --Bill Parcells

by Uncle Angus on Dec 5, 2009 7:58 AM CST up reply actions

Keep telling it like it is Tex

For what it’s worth, I’m a naysayer and I’m not afraid to post here after a win.

The combination of Wade Phillips and Tony Romo spells near-certain failure for the Dallas Cowboys. Head Coach and Quarterback are the two positions that teams typically get leadership and inspiration from. In terms of these ‘intangibles’, both are dismal failures. Wade Phillips might succeed with a guy like Peyton Manning at QB, and Tony Romo might succeed with a great head coach, but the combination of the two of them means a rudderless ship simply going in circles. An 0-5 record in December 2009 is more likely that a 3-2 record. Personally, I’m thankful that after yet another December collapse last season I swore I would never get on-board emotionally until meaningful changes were made. Those changes have not been made and I’m ready for the collapse that has already started.

Wade Phillips is the easy one to replace – there must be ten or more guys out there right now that would be in instant, huge upgrade over Wade. Replacing Romo is going to be tougher because his play on the field is often very good, though inconsistent and, notwithstanding yesterday’s excellent performance, he tends to wilt as the games become bigger. The Dallas Cowboys must draft at least two quarterbacks next April, and one of them must be a blue-chip first round guy. That way, if Romo continues, under a new Head Coach, to be a leaderless, celebrity-chasing, in-season vacationing guy for whom football is just one of many things going on in his life, he can be sent packing.

Tex’s comment here is worth repeating again and again: Super Bowl quarterbacks don’t go to Vegas in the middle of the season. For the life of me, I can’t imagine what the hell Tony Romo was thinking……he is either really stupid or he doesn’t care. Either way, that trip to Vegas was a textbook failure in leadership. Yes, Romo happened to play well Sunday….Jeff George also played well quite frequently……. but much of the team played like crap yesterday, and I believe that is in no small part due to the message Tony Romo is sending, that being…..this Cowboys thing simply isn’t that important to me so why should it be important to you???

Go on All Ye Faithfull, sticking you heads in the sand. Tex and I and a few others will continue to occasionally post here as the voices of reason. And finally, for the record before I’m called a hater and told to go cheer for the Giants, or Eagles or whatever: I hope like hell I’m wrong, I hope Tony Romo has a spectacular December and January, and I hope the Cowboys go on to the Super Bowl.

by Cowboy.Louie on Dec 7, 2009 8:12 AM CST up reply actions

correction

Instead of “For what it’s worth, I’m a naysayer and I’m not afraid to post here after a win”, I should have written: “For what it’s worth, I’m a naysayer and I’m not afraid to post here after Tony Romo played really well”
