The true reason I hate Philly more than any other team...

I saw this while scanning Bleeding Green Nation..the SBNation Eagles blog...

http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2009/11/3/1113770/pretty-angry-after-reading-this

*Disclaimer - I know not all Eagles fans have this mentality and am not trying to insinuate that they do. But, some of them do and this is unbelievable*

There is no way anything like this would ever happen at Cowboys Stadium. Say what you want about the band-wagoners (which you hope would be gone after a 12 year playoff drought) and Hollywood image of the Cowboys. At least we have the ability to differentiate fanhood from manhood. This is despicable and miserable.

I know this is not necessarily a reflection on the team and I keep that in mind..but, the way Philadelphia fans identify themselves as the most rowdy and antagonistic fans in the nation has truly hit a new low. There is a great thing to be seen in supporting your team and being willing to throw out some verbal daggers in support of your home turf..that's what being a fan is all about. But that all means nothing when people lose track of their simple humanity and become vile loathsome individuals like the ones described in this post.

Before now I was hoping for a good game that Dallas would pull out in the end...now I want these newly confident Cowboys to go in there and absolutely trash the Eagles...not so much to show the team disrespect but to give these fans what they truly deserve...a good whooping behind the wood shed.

If this ever happened at Cowboys stadium I'd hope that other Cowboys fans would pummel the idiots for disgracing our team.

(Football post to follow tomorrow...but saw this and had to see others opinions)

Doesn't Surprise Me

And that may be the shame of it all. The old Veterans Stadium had the cheap seats known as the 700 level. That was where the lowest of the low tended to congregate and probably where Iggles fans got most of their bad reputation. A great majority of the Eagles fans I know are decent people who talk some good natured smack occasionally but would rebel at the thought of any type of behaviour such as in that post. Can you imagine how you would feel if we had that stigma attached to us as Cowboy fans? The horror.

funny thing is that as an eagles fan...

i hate guys like that more than cowboys fans or giants fans, or etc.

you see, they give US a bad look in the media and to other people’s fans, when in reality those cats don’t represent us and are not really eagles fans (fairweather or dont know the 2nd or 3rd stringers. I hate cowboys fans like a normal fan should, but a higher percentage are DEFINITELY not like that.

what makes me more upset is that people always seem to point these things out and then judge a bunch of people based on a few….that is the real issue

Amen...

I know that as a Cowboys fan, I especially dislike bandwagon fans since we have a good amount of bandwagon fans that poorly represent our fanbase. I imagine many Eagles fans feel the same way.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

i wouldn' constitute them as bandwagon fans...

…more like douche bags. Seriously though guys like that are usually the ones who love it when their team wins and are indifferent or don’t care when they lose.

State fight!

This post wasn’t about football…if it were I would point out that Philadelphia is not a historically great NFL franchise on the same level as the Niners, Cowboys, Steelers, Raiders, Redskins, Colts, Packers and Giants. Conference championships don’t swing much weight..ask the Bills.

But, again..this does nothing to explain the very skewed idenity Philly fans have adopted as a “tough” fanbase and the degree to which some derilicts will take it…

Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game as a head coach..he has lost 4 home playoff games.

Please state your criteria for “historically great” . In your “history” you’ve won 5 championships. We’ve won 3. In the last 10 years, you’ve made the playoffs 3 times. We’ve made it 7 times. But you’ve got the rings, baby! Like the Raiders and the Redskins, your WERE a great franchise. Now you are just another team that can’t win a playoff game.

It's not even that it's directed at ALL Philly fans...

…and, don’t take this the wrong way, you’re cool and all, but, that B.S. with handicapped guy from the post just wouldn’t fly down here. I’m sure incidences happen like that ALL over, but I guaran-damn-tee you, if I ever witnessed that @ home, against a rival, or whoever it was @ the time, myself or another Southern folk, would’ve been in that defense. However, who knows; he very well could have left those parts out in his story, in an attempt to belittle Philly fans after a loss.

Superbowl, or BUST.

by .FRoST.USAF on Nov 5, 2009 8:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Personally...

I don’t buy that story for a second. I find it really hard to believe that some nameless, faceless, Philly fan stereotype found a guy in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy and just started abusing him for no reason whatsoever.

And then what happened to that guy afterwards? Did a Middle Eastern Philly fan plant a bomb on him? Did a bunch of white Philly fans teach him how to dance badly? Did a black Philly fan steal his wheelchair rims and wheels, and then leave him stranded up on blocks? Did a Jewish Philly fan do his taxes incorrectly on purpose so he got audited? Did a bunch of Asian Philly fans tutor him in math, but tell him that 2+2=9?

I’m calling “sportsism” (the sports equivalent of racism) on anyone here that contributes to the Philly-fan nonsense. Just stop it, because we can go toe to toe all day with the sportsisms of a Dallas fan (see… bandwagoners, nope, won’t say it – yet).

by Bye, Dawk :( on Nov 5, 2009 9:08 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I have no idea whether that story is true or not

but I sure hope it isn’t.

As for the core of the post, even you would have to admit that the Philly’s fans have kind of earned their reputation. Whether it is cheering Irvin on the ground or booing Santa Claus, it isn’t like you guys have gone out of your way to ditch your reputation. Heck, I would even say that many Philly fans embrace that reputation and use it to rationalize being a d-bag at sporting events (someone on that BGN thread even echoed the same thoughts).

However, at the same time I do realize that these “bad fans” are not all of Philly’s fanbase. I know some Eagles fans and they are generally good people who I know would never tolerate that kind of stuff. Unfortunately though, as long as you still have fans that embrace your reputation, you won’t ever see these types of ideas about Philly go away in the same way I doubt Dallas will ever ditch its reputation as having many bandwagon fans.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Nov 5, 2009 11:49 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh shut up

You honestly don’t feel that all fans have complete drunken dbags who will go out of their way to make fun of people. Not just Philly fans, but all fans. And do you honestly think all those comments about the false Philly fans, the joke of “sportisim” and all those other attempted jabs at Dallas were actually humorous? What reason do you have NOT to believe this guy? Every sports fan has their collective group of fans that make us embarrassed to be a fan, so stop acting like this didn’t happen and belittling what this kid went through.

And if not made up… highly exaggerated.

by Bye, Dawk :( on Nov 5, 2009 1:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So

So you don’t believe this story, but then completely believe all Dallas fans are band wagon fans, and are willing to characterize all of them as such? Not attacking, legitimately asking.

by Zach22 on Nov 5, 2009 1:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No...

In fact I was kind of saying the opposite. In the same way Philly fans dislike the bad fan stereotype, Dallas fans dislike the bandwagon stereotype.

by Bye, Dawk :( on Nov 5, 2009 1:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But

But the definition of stereotype is that it holds some truth. Just like there is(not as much as there was when they were winning) bandwagon Cowboy fans, there are obnoxious and violent Eagle fans. You can’t dismiss something just because it belittles your fanbase.

by Zach22 on Nov 5, 2009 1:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, stereotypes all start somewhere, and once they pick up a little momentum, it’s all but impossible to stop. And that’s the reason knuckleheads will believe any story that people crawling out of the woodwork can come up with.

Did you even read the post you cited?

If you did, you’d realize that we, as Eagles fans, were pretty upset about this as well. We’re pretty sick of the vocal minority earning the reputation for the rest of us.

Oh, and just to show you how evil us Eagles fans really are…a couple guys from BGN contacted that kid and bought him tickets for the Eagles Giants game at the Meadowlands.

There are a**holes everywhere and the majority of Philly fans I have encountered over the last few years have actually improved my opinion overall. Those aholes are a true representation of your typical Philly fan which is why I hate that city and the vast majority of it’s inhabitants so much, which by the way are lower than cockroaches on the evolutionary chain as far as I’m concerned.

If you go to any Cowboys game you will see how classy and well behaved all the fans are and they represent to the Cowboys and their organization on how spectators should act during a football game.

Why do you hate Philly so much, Terry?

Not a big fan of history, art, world-class higher education, and great restaurants, are you?

I actually don’t really enjoy trash-talking fans of other teams that much. I’m much rather just focus on my favorite team and chat w/fellow fans, than start fights over here, but threads like this make me mad.

The fact that someone would judge hundreds of thousands of Eagles fans by the actions of such a small minority makes me wonder what other stereotypes you might believe, Terry.

If you’re going to lump us all — and a great, historic city too — into that stereotype, well then I’m going to consider EVERY Cowboys a shameless frontrunner who probably couldn’t find Dallas on a map and didn’t start like them till they won a Superbowl. What’s the difference?

by BrianS on Nov 5, 2009 7:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

guess you didn't read my comment very well

That’s my opinion of the vast majority of Philly fans, not all. I actually have a lot of good friends who are Philly fans, but I was talking about the typical drunk ahole fan at the Linc that typically behaves like those jerks behaved towards that Giants fan.

The vast majority of your fans are like that, it’s true. I heard all those cheers when Irvin was hurt, you really expect me to believe those cheers came from a small minority of fans??

Give me a break. It was most of the stadium.

I love Philly as a city

Some of the best beer bars in the USA (Check out Monks for the best selection of Belgian Beers outside of Brussels, and I am not even certain that anyplace in Brussels can beat it), tons of history, some cool bands have come from there (Marah, Slo-Mo, etc), good eats, etc..

Philly sports fans are passionate, intense, and knowledgable. Go to a Phillies games vs. say a TExas RAngers game and you will see what I mean, though I think East Coast baseball fans just care more, and the same holds true for hoops.

Saying that, I have seen the COwboys play in several stadiums (Giants Stadium, the Yale Bowl, Shea Stadium, Mile High, Heinz Field, even RFK) and I have never seen the asinine behavior nor faced the vitriol as when I went to a game in the Vet.

I have no desire to live in Philly whatsoever, but in no way do I thing the whole city is “classless scum” just in the same way that Dallas can’t be represented by its lowest common denominators. Football smack is one thing, but the road you are headed down is way over that level.

Wow. That's just wrong.

But, if you read the comments, the bloggers are putting together something for that guy. Of course, SB bloggers are some of the smartest folks in the world when it comes to sports ;)

Still, many cross-bloggers like the Philly ones we get here do so just because they’re sports fans. One of my best friends is a ’Skins fan, a cousin of mine is an Eagles fan, and pretty much the rest of my fam are all Niners fans. We get along.

It’s all fun and games, and I’d bet we could all watch this game together like a big BTB/BGN family without stepping as low as those jerkwods that poked fun of that kid’s wheelchair.

Just saying…the fact that some Eagles blogger posted that on BGN shows that some in that City of Brotherly love do have a heart, even for a Giants fans. Unfortunately, the bad apples at LFF will draw the ire of the media and the comparisons to the Black Hole at Oakland will remain.

Let me pose a quick question to anyone on here that has spouted some opinion on Philly fans' behavior...

How many sporting events have you been to in Philly?

For the 1-5% of you that actually have (because I know it isn’t more than that), what exactly did you see there that was so troubling?

by Bye, Dawk :( on Nov 5, 2009 11:58 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Complete classless behavior

Eggs thrown at the team busses.

Beer and insults thrown at anyone wearing a Cowboys jersey. At least 3 women wearing Cowboys jerseys were physically manhandled while the rest of the crowd was cheering “show her tits”.

At least 4 fights in the stands and too many to count in the parking lot.

I’ve been to every stadium in the NFC East and there is simply no lower standard of behavior than I experienced at the Vet.

I worked in Philthy for over a year

I went to 2 football games and 3 Flyers games. I lived in D.C. while working at the Pentagon for 5 years and have family in New York. My grandfather was a Dallas season ticket holder from ‘71 and we kept them in the family until Jerry World was built. Spent nearly every Thanksgiving at the games. I’ve been there, done that.

You, sir, don’t what you’re talking about if you try to defend a group that had to have it’s own court in the stadium to handle the problems.

Much like the "wheelchair guy"...

Fighter15 is either extremely exaggerating, or just flat out lying…

Beer and insults thrown at anyone wearing a Cowboys jersey.

Please.

At least 3 women wearing Cowboys jerseys were physically manhandled while the rest of the crowd was cheering "show her tits".

Hahahahahaha, come on now… 3 women were basically being raped in public and people cheered it on? Please.

At least 4 fights in the stands

Fights in the stands happen, no doubt. I’ve been to at least 25 Eagles games, and I’ve seen a grand total of ONE. You saw 4?

and too many (fights) to count in the parking lot.

Really? You lost count of the fights? Really? REALLY?

All this kind of proves my point… Believe less than 1% of what you read on the internet, because people are completely full of shite. Thanks for the over-the-top ridiculous stories, Fighter15.

The Update..

As mentioned above by a few folks some of the good people over at BGN are in the process of getting the guy at the core of this story some tickets to a Giants game..

Bravo, certainly commendable that there are people out there who are going above and beyond to show that this type of behavior is not typical nor acceptable. There are some great philly fans out there and its just a shame that a portion of the fanbase that is hellbent on being “the rowdiest fans in the NFL” gives good fans a bad name.

Tip of the cap to the BGN folks…

Now..is it Sunday yet?

Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game as a head coach..he has lost 4 home playoff games.

And

And it doesn’t mean that it isn’t at all true. Chances are, it is mostly true with some slight exaggerations on some accounts. What is more likely, a guy going completely and utterly out of his way to belittle a group of fans, or a guy going to a rivals stadium, harassed by a small percentage of a groups fans(who are assholes, and every fan group has them), and then posts his stories about it online?

by Zach22 on Nov 5, 2009 1:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Look...

I don’t know the “wheelchair guy” from a hole in the wall, and I’m not going to begin guessing motives… and you know what? Maybe his story is true. Hell, maybe Fighter15 even witnessed a group of Eagles fans sexually assaulting 3 female Cowboys’ fans while the masses cheered, maybe he saw 4 fights in the stands and countless others in the parking lot, maybe he saw eggs thrown at the opposing team bus, and maybe every Cowboy fan in the place drenched with beers that cost $8 a pop that day.

Is it possible? Sure, why not? I’m just trying to look at it rationally, and my common sense tells me that I find his story, as written, extremely hard to believe.

Eagles Fans

I am married to an Eagles fan. Some of my best friends are Eagles fans. I could care less what team someone roots for. What matters is what lives in the middle of their chest. Heart. Some people are good, some aren’t. The football team they root for doesnt have any effect on their personality.

I respect most Iggles fans because like most Cowboy fans, they actually know whats going on with their team. They know who’s been drafted, cut, starting, benched, what rumors are flying around and the rest of the useless knowledge we all pride oursilves on knowing.

The thing that makes a good person and football fan is the ability to be a homer, but an honest homer. Give credit where credit is due, and take criticism without taking it personally.

I personally HATE the Iggles. Not because of their fans, but because they have broken our hearts so much lately. We may own the overall lead in the series but the have pwned us this decade.

Lets leave the teams out of the d***bag conversation and call an a$$hole an a$$hole.

True Story Here. No Lie.

- my best man is from reading and a longtime Eagles fan

- my bro-in-law lived near South street in Philly and is a diehard Eagles fan

- one of my buds (and his two college-aged sons) are hardcore Eagles fans

- two of my friends whose daughters play softball with my daughter are true Eagles fans

- one of my co-workers is a serious Eagles fan

- one of my lady friends grew up with her brothers and father a devoted Eagles fan

I can’t get away from them… but I can say this about each and every one of ’em.

They’re high character, totally classy individuals. For real.

I think that like every race and every political group — and the like… every team’s fans will have a certain sect of bad apples.

It’s not fair — and it’s not right — to stereotype.

The Eagles fans I know are way cool.

I don't like Eagles and will never fully forgive their fans for cheering Michael Irvin

but this much animosity doesn’t seem right to me. I am a huge fan of the Cowboys and am from Texas, but I simply refuse to be so hostile towards a city just because they have some idiots that actually decide the stereotype of being really hostile (aka being a d-bag) towards other teams’ fans is a good thing and something that should be projected outwards. The bottom-line is that generalizing so much is not the way to go because frankly, many on here are basing their opinion on the stupid actions of a select few.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

this is childish and immature. Hey, I remember the Irvin incident quite well and it still doesn’t sit well with me, but it’s poor sportsmanship to name-call and generalize every fan. I was at the Cowboys-Ravens game and there were some jerk Cowboy fans there as well. Does that make me a jerk? My point is, there are jerks everywhere and Philly does have a bad reputation (no offense Philly bloggers) but lets not get into a immature name calling fight. 8,0000,001 post about who has the douchebagiest(sp?) fans...

Here we go again Dawkins, about your considerable defense of a city that continually shadows itself in murky character issues(Hiring Michael Vick, cheering while a player laid injured, and throwing objects at SantaClause)…All these Mr. Dawkins bring credibility to the article…I DO NOT have a hard time believing this one true also…You dont want to admit the possibility, because it denotes a character flaw in yourself…DENIAL is not a good DEFENSE in all practical things Mr. Dawkins, and just because you believe it might be exagerated, and over rated does not mean it did not happen…For the record let it be noted that I said I DO NOT have a problem believing this happened, and if it turns out to be a false rumour, I would apologize profusely for my mistake…But a mistake is all I would be committing, in respect to the issue, where what your fans do to people who are less fortunate than you, are downright criminal…The She-Gals fired a employee of the Stadium simply because he criticized the team for trading Daryl Dawkins….That is a credible, and documented story Mr. Dawkins…that is not made up or over rated or exagerated…it DID happen…So, now why do you believe different about this article as being a genuine…I will tell you why Mr. Dawkins, plain and simple, you DO support such raucus and disreputable behaviour…You come on here, and talk football, and give people your insight into the game, and yet from comments that you have made, you show your support of these characters than diminish the beauty of your city so horribly…Why did you not come out and apologize straight off for the article(true, or fake) and then lay out your reasons why you believe it to be a fake…But NO you came out attacking those who wrote the article…you didnt want to admit to the fact that it could have occured, only that you DID NOT believe it occured…If it did occur, Mr. Dawkins, and you had apologized for it straight out consider how much better your moral position would have benefited…Every one of you on here who claims to be a fan of the She-Gals, regardless of what other have said, need to take a long deep look into your hearts, and wonder if I to could be responsible for one or maybe all of these incidences where SHAME and DISHONOR are yours starkly contrasted…Believe me when I say Mr. Dawkins(and include all Philthy Fans) who DO NOT apologize first, and then look deeper into it, instead of attacking what other have said in defense of the wheel-chair bound victim…YOU ARE AS GUILTY as those who perpetrated the crime…Thats all I have to say…FEAR THE STAR
