Cowboys @ Eagles: This Is Why We Watch Football
Remember that clip of film with Bill Parcells on the sideline talking to his team late in a game? He's yelling encouragement. "This is what you work all off season for. This is why you lift all those weights. This is why you do all that (stuff)."
That's the speech someone should give to all of us Cowboys fans this week. This game against Philadelphia is why we do all this stuff. It's why we scour for every tidbit of information during the free-agency period, why we spend a whole weekend staring at the TV watching a guy read out names in the draft. It's why we suffer through the doldrums of the summer when only an occasional OTA slakes our thirst. It's why we follow training camp like our lives depended on it.
We do all that waiting for games like this one. Two bitter inter-division rivals, playing quality football, with matching records of 5-2, meet to grab first place in the NFC East at the midpoint of the season. What could be better than that? Oh yeah, stick it on a Sunday night so the whole football-watching world can check it out.
To paraphrase another old dude - this game has all the makings.
Make the jump...
Sure, we like to watch each and every game, each and every week. But every once in a while a game comes along that seems to mean more. Not only because it's a division game, we have six of those every year, but because it has that little something extra.
The game against the Giants was big, but it was so early in the season it was hard to know about the teams and how they would progress as the season wore on. The Denver game took place at a time when we didn't really know if the Broncos were for real. Playing Atlanta was sort of a statement game, but Atlanta was a flawed team despite their record. And really, they're kind of a one-hit wonder as a playoff team from last year; we still need to see them do it consistently.
That brings us to Philadelphia, who has been winning big in the NFC for the better part of this decade. Despite their unexplainable stumble in Oakland, the Eagles are a team that screams quality in the NFC.
So let's go through the checklist:
Playing a high-quality NFC opponent? Check.
Playing a divisional game? Check.
Playing a team for outright control of the NFC East at the midway point of the season? Check.
Two evenly matched opponents based on records and stats? Check.
Playing on Sunday night? Check.
One team trying to avenge an embarrassing loss that knocked them out of the playoffs last year, while sending the other to the playoffs? Check.
Playing a team we absolutely despise?! Double, no, triple check.
There's not a real point to this post except to say this game has the really big-time feel to it. A win this week says Dallas is the best team in the NFC East right now, and a serious contender for NFC supremacy. A loss knocks you back into the playoff masses and says there is still a lot of work to be done. We're on the road, which adds an extra layer of difficulty, but also offers an extra layer of reward should we win.
All 16 games are important. But some games have a little something extra, like a divisional foe or playing another team with a winning record and part of the elite in the league.
Then there are games like Sunday night, when you have everything rolled into one.
That is why we suffer through all the offseason downtime. Why we mine for nuggets of information going into training camp. Why we obsess about preseason games. Why we put ourselves up for heartbreak each week, like the Giants or Broncos games.
This is why we put in all that "work" every season. All to watch games like this one coming up.
It's worth it.

but winning on the road in front of that rough crowd would be that much better.

Big games on Monday & Sunday night...
usually ruin the rest of the early games for me. I’m watching them, but I’m not paying attention. The next day I check the scores and I’m amazed out the out come of a game I actually watched.
I don’t think this win is vital to the season, but I think it is vital if the Cowboys are going to be fighting for a first round bye.

Did I miss coverage of Roy Williams acting like TO?
First he drops balls, now he complains about the quality of passes his direction… Seriously? Ughhh.

Anthing you want to cover, feel free to FanPost it.
Roy has been covered here, here , and here just in the past few days.
Personally, Roy whining is a who-cares thing to me. I don’t feel like wasting my time and spoiling my season worrying about Roy and his needs, especially since he’s a playing a minor-role in a very successful offense so far this season. I mean, suppose Roy whines so much that it became intolerable and they had to bench him. You have to ask yourself, how much would it even matter? I hope Roy succeeds here, I’d love for him to have a breakout game in Philly.
But is Roy really the story in Dallas? Or is Miles Austin, the play of Romo, Mike Jenkins stepping up, the pass rush coming on, an o-line that is having a great season, the newly-awesome special teams, or any other number of things that have put us at 5-2?
Plenty of coverage of the Roy Story can be found at any MSM Cowboys site. Even saying all that, we’ll probably cover it some more soon. But we’re not obsessed with every utterance that comes out his mouth.
If I’m wrong BTB community, let me know. Is the Roy Story tops on your mind and the thing we should be covering?

Mike and Mike
talked about it this morning. It was funny to watch the entire news cycle come around in about 5 minutes. When they first brought it up they were shocked and appauled. Then a few minutes later they got more info and realized it wasn’t that big of a deal. I think a majority of his complaining is being taken out of context.
Anyway, imagine how good this offense would be if Romo and Roy could improve their 38% completion rating with each other. I think it turns us from efficient to elite on offense. But we are still a good offense so any improvements with them is an added bonus. And no, I don’t think benching him will hurt the offense. Let Hurd and Ogletree run around in there and see what happens. Can you get worse production that Roy right now?

Cowboys aren't going to bench RW
anymore than they would bench Romo, not going to happen. I think Wade and Jerry has made that perfectly clear.

Maybe not the main issue and I know people have covered it,
but as unproductive as Roy has been in the passing game, I feel like he’s really helping the run game. He is like Keyshawn (and kind of TO) blocking down the field. I know that’s not why he’s here, but if we benched him we’d lose that and that would hurt.

the roy story is no story
so he might be a little frustrated. who cares? Who wouldn’t be frustrated if you had high expectations for this year and you were having a hard time achieving them?

I agree it is a non-story
Roy is under a lot of pressure, so I understand his frustration-Competive guy and WR’s are naturally Divas. It is obvious the timing is off, usually the ball either being thrown to high or behind him. Is coming out of the breaks faster then it looks? I know it is something that will be correct. Roy just needs to continue to communicate with Romo and not the media.

I think they have to win this game. If they lose, they go 0-2 in the East while Philly goes 3-0 and we’ll be a game back, so really in my mind if they lose, they’re playing for a WC the rest of the way.

I don't know.....
I hope you’re right, but I still remember back against Buffalo a couple of years ago. They looked dead in the water. In fact, if memory serves me, they should have lost that game because Eli and Company played terrible but they ended up winning thus launching them into the playoffs. One big thing that is different this year with the GMen is they don’t have Strahan (which is huge imo.) I have always thought that Usemenora (cant spell) is a little over-rated since a lot of his sacks that year were against the Eagles.
by texstar on Nov 5, 2009 1:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
About that Buffalo game, Eli was the only one who played terribly in that game.
Four turnover on 20 pass attempts. Yet they ended up winning comfortably because they ran for something like 300 yards and got some defensive TD’s.

Right.
I wouldn’t say the division would be out of reach if we lost this one, but it would make it very difficult—we’d probably have to win all 4 of our remaining Beast games.
How many times have we beat Philly and the Giants in the big 1st game only to lose what turned out to be the more important 2nd game later.
I do think we’ve been on a roll and want to see continued improvement—if that puts us in a situation to beat Philly, all the better.

There is still alot of football to play
I think I have heard several players say that already. This game is HUGE for our confidence. we gotta chake off the loss from last year and put that one to bed.
If we win, especially if we win big this will help catapult us into the elite few and it will help us gain confidence in our team as a whole.
I dont think Roy Williams was complaining about anything, just stating the obvious. He stated that the guys that have been here are getting good footballs thrown to them. He means that he is still relatively new and still has not got on the same page with Romo. I think roy knows and he even said it, that he has alot of work to do and eventually the work he has put in will come to fruition.
HOPEFULLY HE BURNS THE PHILLY D, becuase I dont think they will be keying on him as much after Austin’s last few games….
He is on a team with alot of talent and he has to play up to their level. I dont think he has ever played on a team with this many options on offense and he has yet to find his niche. Except that he is a MONSTER at downfield blocking. And if he can continue to make blocks downfield and spring our running game then I think he is at least doing his part. Look out for him if he starts to give up on his blocks like many other frustrated receivers do. Then and only then will I be calling for him to be cut or demoted.

yeah i think it might be
Also, anyone else bored hearing that GB is a test? Does anyone think GB is an elite team? We’re going to sack Aaron Rodgers like 13 teams

We better lol
They have a decent offense so it’s definitely some concern, but I don’t really think they are a good team. You can play that stupid who beat who game, but honestly, I think the Vikings are wayyyy overrated and they beat the Pack twice, and IN LAMBEAU. If the Packers can’t it up for Favre they won’t get it up for anyone.

Dallas ought to start Jenkins and Scandrick
I am not sure T-New has the legs to keep up with DeSean and Maclin. I am keeping my emotions on this game bottled up…the last time around i was really pumped and we all know what happened. Hopefully we stay focussed and get the job done on Sunday Night.

I want to see if our CBs can get physical
with Philly. Jenkins and Newman have been bring the lumber as of late.

Yeah, benching Newman doesn’t make sense. Giving Newman help on D Jax, makes sense.

Dave, you are soo right. This game is colossal!
Even the games within the game are amplified. I am curious to see how the corners handle the Eagles receivers.
Is it a better match-up to have Newman on Jackson, as Terrence seems to engage another gear when faced with a challenging receiver?
Or is it better to have Mike Jenkins and his physical play match-up on Desean? Which cornerback would be best suited to limit Jackson with safety help over the top in most instances?
Will Sensabaugh continue his excellent play against quality tight ends, and limit the impact of Brent Celek in this game? I believe that Sensabaugh and Carpenter will do a great job.
How will Westbrook impact the game? Will he be limited by his concussion? Will the rookie, McCoy, be able to make-up for any drop-off in Westbrook’s play?
Will Ware, Spencer, Ralliff, and Bowen be able to overwhelm an average Eagles offensive line? Will Philadelphia try to run a little more to keep the pressure off of McNabb?
And that is just how the defense matches up against the Eagles offense. There is much more on the other side of the ball and on special teams.
Just making the playoffs is not the goal of Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. Winning in the playoffs is the goal.
My feeling is that Dallas needs to win the division in order to give itself the best chance to succeed in the playoffs. In order to win the division, the Cowboys need to beat the Eagles and the Giants.
Time to sit back and enjoy some big-boy football on Sunday night.

I love where you're going with this.
I was talking to someone on ESPN about it last night, how you can go back and forth for hours with all the different (and seemingly equally important) matchups. To your Newman/Jenkins wondering.. Dallas doesn’t do much bump and run out wide so I’m not sure how much Jenksin physicallity would come in, except on a normal pass where he lays him out. Newman has laid some wood (see Roddy White hit and forced fumble last week) so maybe he can put a smack on him and break his skinny a— lol

I think this game tops 80 points scored
and might even get to 100. And amazingly, I expect big plays from both Defenses, Special Teams, and Offense. This going to be like 45-43

Our D will have some chances..
D McNabb holds the ball and will make a couple of really inaccurate passes during the game. I think the D comes up big. Bracket D-Jax!!
Westbrook coming back is huge for them, he hasn’t played that great all season, but he loves playing the Cowboys.
I think Witten has a big game, I think he has the greatest mismatch in this game. Tellus should have some chanes to get vertical, also.

This may sound crazy but...
…I don’t enjoy these games at all.
All week long, leading up to the games, I’m a nervous wreck. I can’t stand not knowing who is going to win. And even worse, I can’t stand the prospect that we might lose. [This game would be a lot easier to stomach if it were at home.]
If the nerves are really, REALLY bad (like they were last year before the last game of the season at Philly), I simply can’t watch the game. I’ll tape it and go into work for three hours, and then I’ll come home and watch it after the game (if and ONLY if they win).
So, again, this may sound crazy, but I can’t wait to get this week over and head into the Green Bay game with a 6-2 record, so that I can get nervous all over again…

I agree
friends invited us over to watch the game on Sunday night, and of course my wife accepted. The host is a Steelers fan and hates the Cowboys. I want to watch the game with someone who is going to needle me about every little mistake the Cowboys make, Romo especially, like i want my junk slammed in a drawer.
This game is HUGE for Romo… at least in terms of my perception of him. Choker or winner? If Romo plays adequately, the Cowboys win by at least 4. If he yuks it up out there I could see this becoming a blow out.
The shi**y thing about it all is that Romo is due to lay an egg. He’s due a howler and he’s going to be on national TV with a very important game on the line.
The Cowboys will bottle up the Eagles’ running game, the Cowboys will run on the Eagles, the Cowboys will get pressure on McNabb. The Cowboys should win. There will be some typical Eagles vs Cowboys big plays by McNabb or their special teams, but the Cowboys are just better and should methodically execute their offense and score frequently… IF Romo plays merely adequately.
I’ll grant him a fumble and an INT and 50% completion rate… he plays better than that, the Cowboys win going away… he plays worse than that and they lose.

Pre-December wins...
Even against worthy foes just won’t be as rewarding or worth celebrating until this team finally shakes its’ winter woes. I expect a little more out of this team than I did Q-Ball or Bledsoe’s bunch.

They did.. it's not his fault he's got 10 people in his face after every practice..
It’s obvious him and Romo are having issues connecting. At least he is admitting it, and from what I’ve seen, he knows it’s not all Romo’s fault and they are definitely both to blame. I think it would be worse if he tried to act like everything is ok and pretend they aren’t having problems. He is manning up and admitting. I don’t mind it.

A little off-topic, but a very interesting stat
rushing yards by offence minus rushing yards given by defense.
Cowboys are number one at +1.5/game
NFC powerhouses Saints and Vikes are in the middle around +0.1/game
in a long rum this is huge, if we can sustain it will be winning many Sundays

Cold weather games this year? Maybe 3 out of 8
Nov 15 @ Green Bay – outdoors – could be cold
Nov 22 @ Dallas (indoors)
Nov 26 @ Dallas (indoors)
Dec 6 @ NYG – outdoors – could be cold
Dec 13 @ Dallas (indoors)
Dec 19 @ New Orleans (indoors)
Dec 27 @ Washington – outdoors – could be cold
Jan 3 @ Dallas (indoors)
Remember that a couple of weeks ago, in the snow, Tom Brady threw for 380 yards and 6 touchdowns. Sometimes cold weather games produce big aerial attacks (not just ground and pound football.) This was Terry Bradshaw’s argument in Pittsburg in the 70’s. He said that in bad weather they excelled in the passing game.

it's true that the passing game excels in snowy weather
because the receivers know where they are going which means a lot of slippage for CBs and safeties not to mention the pass rushers have bad footing as well.

The reason
why I think Dallas has a good chance of winning ….. last game …. No Felix Jones …. an unhealthy Barber …. and no WR that was hotter than hell ….
Now, Felix is playing …. Barber is almost healthy …. and Austin is on fire. Also, Brooking makes a huge difference.
I’m nervous and excited for this game.
