Should Wade's contract be extended???
Buddy who lives in the Dallas area said that this was the topic of the mediots most of the morning yesterday. Our Boys do something bad and they are ready to run the lot out of town, do something good and they are full of the cheese. He was incredulous over it. His reasoning was sound, what has he done to deserve it? What has he proven yet? Wait until he shows the capability of getting us over the December/playoff hump.
Got me to thinking however (I know, scary stuff). What if it was smart to simply hedge your bet so to speak? IF, I say IF, you could extend his contract in such a way that gives him an extension with some pay increase, but keeps the possibility of sending him packing at the end of the year. You are covered both ways. If he is able to do it, he gets some stability and you've locked him up from other teams when he could command more money. That would save you money down the road. If he isn't able to get us over that hump, you aren't restricted from moving on.
Again, this post isn't meant to make the arguement that he should get one based on merit in anyway whatsoever. I completely disagree with the premise of what the media was arguing. My line of thinking was based on a past fanshot by Tim Wilson, http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2009/10/19/1091130/youre-not-a-winner-until-youre-a. We don't know how this season is going to play out, but enjoy the ride and plan for the what ifs.

I say Jerry should wait until the season is done...
And contrary to popular belief I do not believe it will take an actual super bowl win to keep him in Dallas. If this team has as solid year that culminates with a playoff win or two that should be enough for Wade to be extended.
The 2009 Dallas Cowboys: Talk to me in December.
The NFC East has won 11 Super Bowls; oddly none of those have come courtesy of the Eagles.

a playoff win is the key
I think it is an either-or scenario. Wade wins playoff game—saves job. No playoff victory? No job.
I’m a huge fan of WP, but if he doesn’t come up with a W this year, I say he’s gotta go.

He already has a contract extention in place
It’s completely at Jerry Jones’ option, thus his extention will be based on whether or not he performs in the playoffs or not.
No need for any other action.

This
He already has an option in his contract beyond this year. All Jerry has to do is pick it up.

Jerry will extend him if we do well in the playoffs
and if we don’t or fail to make the playoffs, he won’t, simple as that.

Best not to comment when tired. Wade looked like Ware to me, haha.

Took Bill Cowher over 10 years to win a SB with Pittsburgh...
What if the Rooney’s had dumped him after we beat the Steelers back in ’96? Would they have been in as good a shape as they are now?
I think patience is the key here. Wade has amassed a pretty solid winning percentage over his tenure here; certainly better results than Parcells or Campo and you have to go back to the first year of Gailey to get any postseason success.
I’m just not sure you get anywhere by constantly changing coaching staffs; like you don’t go anywhere by constantly turning over your starting QB. There is a certain benefit to taking the “long view.” Wades draft picks are only now starting to come into their own and getting “his guys” into the defensive scheme are starting to bear fruit. As long as we finish the season reasonably strong (and by that I mean over .500) without any major drama or scandals, I think that Jerry should keep him.

we're 25th in D
does that weigh into the argument?

but only giving up 16.4 ppg over the last 5 games...
yardage given up doesn’t mean squat. Points allowed is the only stat that matters.

I think it's only fair to say
That Wade is winning largely because of the talent that Tuna brought in.
Add to the fact that he was brought here because of his supposed genius with the 3-4, yet our D ranks in the bottom third of the league (statistically) right now. A good defensive coach can get his players to clamp down harder when it’s late and the game is on the line, which Wade has basically failed at to this point, in my opinion.

look at the stats for the last couple games
It’s obvious that the games against Tampa and the Giants were somewhat anomalous. Over the last 5 games our scoring defense is at 16.4 points and that includes a gift score last week in the 4th quarter when Seattle got the ball inside our 10 yard line.
The talent that Tuna brought in? Like Bobby Carpenter, who is villified on this board, or any number of the O-linemen that aren’t even on the team anymore?
Why is it that Parcells is given the credit for bringing in talented people, but JJ takes the blame for the busts during the same time period? Double standard much?
The guys on the other side of the ball get paid to play, too, don’t forget.
by mrbelk on Nov 6, 2009 8:44 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, Carpenter was certainly Parcell's mistake...
But I’m pretty sure many guys brought in during Parcells tenure are starring for this squad right now. Oh, Just to name a few:
Romo
Ware
Spears
Canty – Gone but not forgotten
Miles
Ratliff
He had his fair share of misses, too. However he was brought in to re-tool this defense, and built a quality jumping off point for his eventual successor to work with.
Let’s be real here. Most of the top talent on this team was brought in and/or groomed by the Parcells era. There is no double standard, as he is to blame for his misses. But no one, NO ONE, gets every pick right.
Our stats have certainly improved over the last few games, but we haven’t exactly been playing the Eagles, Saints, and (Insert Above Average Offense Team Here). I have faith in the defense and their ability to make plays, but I also worry our hope is misguided because of the quality of opponents we’ve faced so far.

And before you jump on my head...
Atlanta was quite obviously not their normal selves that game. Chalk it up to whatever you like, but something in their offense was amiss that game.

If we do well
Jason G. will have a lot to do with it.. If we extend Wade, I think we lose JG..
I like JG is doing..

JG would only move to a OC job somewhere else IMO.
Who would pay him what Jerry is paying hi?. I don’t think Wade will be back unless they go deep in the playoffs. I think Jerry will move JG up to HC. It’s Jerry best way to keep his nose in everything with out any problems.

JJ does not have to offer him an extension to have WP as HC next year.
JJ has stated that he can just pick up the option and that will keep him on the staff going into 2010.

There is no need..
As has been stated Jerruh has an option for 2010. Also, Wade hasn’t proven anything yet..he has a terrible habit of progressively getting worse from year to year. If that changes this year I’m on board with giving him an extension…if not I’ll only hope they don’t make JG the HC
Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game as a head coach..he has lost 4 home playoff games.
His longest tenure as head coach was 3 years.
Only once did his record as a HC improve from one year to the next (by 1 game)

So you're on the fence?

I think Garrett will be the HC next season
If he doesn’t get the job here, he’ll get it with another franchise.

Uh, no
Although I ranted after KC, I am well off the edge re: WP. I don’t know if he is a viable long-term coach for this team, but at this point it’s a business decision, not a football one.
The ONLY reason you extend Wade now is you believe there will be other teams interested in him at year’s end, forcing up the price of retention. I find that highly unlikely. Let the season play out, then make the call.
As far as Camillas is concerned, despite being a proven performer in his specialty and engineering a turnatound in DAL ST I didn’t think possible, there’s nothing in his background that would justify him essentially skipping an entire level to go to a HC position. In business, succession planning is just that – you don’t want to promote someone to a position of incompetence. Believe we’ve seen enough of that.
