Why does Orlando Scandrick still have a job?

I understand Orlando Scandrick was an underdog from a BCS busting school that had everyone rooting for him, but the honeymoon is over. Mike Jenkins beat him out for the starting CB position opposite Newman and has subsequently turned in a Pro Bowl-type performance this year. This may lead you to believe that Scandrick only lost the job because Jenkins was so great, but that is obviously not the case. Now, I'm not a football guru, nor do I claim to be, and due to the lack of effective defensive statistics all of this is coming from only watching football games. It is clear, however, that Scandrick is quite possibly the worst player on this team with any real responsibilities. I constantly see people complain about the contract we gave Roy Williams and how he's not performing up to it. I'd rather have an grossly overpaid decent player than an overpaid worthless player. If you believe this is unfair or unjust I ask you to show me some game where Scandrick proved his worth and was not embarrassed subsequently.

You need only look at this past game against the Giants, who have found out the Cowboy's dirty little secret all too well.

  • 1:15 - Again, I'm no expert but Manning's pump left then look right makes it seem like they were definitely targeting someone on that side, and I don't think it's #41. I understand Scandrick was playing zone here, but who was he covering underneath that he couldn't go a little deeper on Nicks?
  • 1:44 - Another throw to Steve Smith with Orlando Scandrick in coverage. Scandrick is prone to falling for the double move so he gives Smith way too big of a cushion and allows an incredibly easy completion, something he would do all night.
  • 4:07 - This isn't so much Scandrick's fault as it is the entire punt coverage team, but how do you let a returner get away from you without even making an attempt at a tackle? Not even a hand on him.
This is the only video I could find but it shows some problem areas. If any of you have the game on DVR or recorded in anyway I beg you to go watch #32. See how many 3rd down he gives up, how he should have given up that TD to Steve Smith. This young man is simply over his head. He cannot tackle consistently and does not have the make-up speed to play as off as he is. I understand that a lot of the oneness falls on the coaching staff for leaving him on Steve Smith all game, but eventually he has to make a play. If you believe this is just the Giants abusing him, guess again. Look back at all the games we've had and look at who the offense targets on the third down. Whenever #32 is on the slot he gives big cushions and big gains. I hate to see all the grief that our QB and WRs catch when the third downs and big plays that Scandrick gives up are almost single handedly losing games for us at times. This young man needs to be benched and built up again because right now we can't have any options that are much worse than him.

The Midgets seem to give him trouble

Even though he’s not making the plays like he was last season, he’s still done a decent job, IMHO. And besides, there is no one to replace him. He just needs to play through whatever he’s struggling with. He’ll be a better player in the long run.

You can't stop Patrick Crayton, you can only hope to contain him.

The answer to your question:

because he’s a 2nd year player who was a 5th round draft pick who still has upside. He’s not expensive (see 5th round) and is a serviceable 3rd corner at this time. He will either develop into a #2 and replace Newman in the next couple of years and be here for a long time. Or he won’t and he’ll have a short career at Dallas and probably in the NFL.
Sometimes players are on the team in minor part for what they add now and with significant hope and anticipation of future development. That’s why they have position coaches, to get guys like Scandrick developed into a complete pro at their position.

Another Answer

Scandrick isn’t the typical case of a kid who isn’t ready yet. Last year Scandrick was the one playing at a Pro Bowl level and Jenkins was playing like a sorry bum. I don’t know what is wrong with Scandrick this season but when you have a 23 year old who has played at a very high level in the NFL, you give him some time to get better.

by JimmyJohnson on Dec 10, 2009 7:14 AM CST reply actions

Ohhh, he's not that bad. Let the kid develop.

Sure, he has problems with Steve Smith, but alot of CBs do. In other games, his coverage is there.

Realistically, what are they going to do? Bring up one of the practice squad guys to replace him? Look up Pete Hunter?

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

Scandrick is fine.

He is getting on the job training. He isn’t Jenkins, but that is why Jenkins was a 1st rounder. Their isn’t 10 corners who can stop S.Smith from catching the ball out of the slot on consistent basis. He is that good at route running.

Scandrick is still learning CB is tough position to play.

It's not just the Giants that give him trouble

It’s been almost every team from about the third game. He consistently misses tackles on bubble screens and gives cushions that he can’t make up for with his speed. I’m not asking for the Cowboys to cut him, that would be a huge mistake, but once our secondary is healthy he needs to be benched, just to see if anyone can be better this year. This is not a knock on Scandrick’s potential or where he can be in a few years, but where he is now. I understand we have no feasible replacement now but I’m telling you guys keep a look out for #32 during this Chargers game and see if it really is just the Giants that beat him. They seem to be the only team that has figured out to attack him on a regular basis, if other teams do that then this defense won’t be able to get off the field. Against the Chiefs he gave up big plays to Wade late in the game, against the Packers they figured out they could put Driver in the slot and terrorize him. Scandrick played well last year and showed glimpses of what he could be, but he’s nowhere near that right now and it could definitely hurt this team in the long run.

I wonder if he'll be taking on Gates at times this week.

Yowza!

Well, duh!

Because there’s no one behind him. Who you got that’s going to be better? Allan Ball is already on the field at FS, and hasn’t been any better than Scandrick at CB this year anyway. This is what happens when you draft guys for their special teams talent instead of drafting serviceable backups. Can’t blame anyone for Scandrick’s regression except for him, but you can blame Jerry for not drafting another backup!

We did draft backups

in DeAngelo Smith and Mike Mickens, but neither one panned out.

Due to the same reasons behind Folk being the Kicker

If a players shows that he has the necessary skills to be good, or better, in the NFL, you should stick with even if they’re going through a hard patch, because they may turn it around.

There have been many examples of this kind of thing, a recent example would be our own Keith Brooking, he was believed to be finished last year in Atlanta… His career is close to the finish line, but he’s been quite a surprize.

Scandrick is a good young player

With any young player, he’s going to have some growing pains. You don’t give up on him just because he gets beat every once in a while, thats totally ridiculous.

Total knee jerk reaction by you.

Knee Jerk

I know what a knee jerk reaction is, and I know what I’ve been seeing for a while now. If anything, I think it’s a knee jerk reaction to dismiss his miscues as being caused by how good Steve Smith runs his routes. Like I mentioned above this hasn’t been solely in the Giants game, though they seem to have figured out who to attack. I’m not advocating cutting Scandrick at all, but I do feel that this team needs to explore its options when the team is healthier or make a change in his responsibilities, maybe move to more zone coverages on third down. Maybe it’s only that I see his mistakes and not those of others because of the position he plays and when he’s made them, but he has made them, of that I’m sure. If you watch the Packers highlights , particularly the pass plays at 1:47 and 2:16, Scandrick shows that he’s giving big cushions that he can’t compensate for, and can’t tackle very well. Though the tacklings issue seems to permeate through our whole secondary. The Packers moved the ball well when we were in man and they were throwing to the slot whether it was Driver or Jennings. Earlier in the highlight and in other videos I’ve seen Scandrick has shown to be pretty good in zone coverage covering underneath routes, but if this coaching staff continues to put him in man coverage on the slot he’ll continue to get burned. Before you guys dismiss my arguement watch Sunday and see if he is the player you remember from last year. You can’t tell me he has promise because of one good year, then tell me that there is no cause for concern with one bad year.

Then why is the Post entitled “Why does Orlando Scandrick still have a job?”

The Knights season may have just ended, but the Cowboys year is just begining!

by aussie_cowboy on Dec 10, 2009 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

Because his job is to cover the slot as our 3rd CB and he’s not doing that, he deserves to be benched when we have a healthy replacement and that’s taking away his responsibilities, or job.

by cj89 on Dec 10, 2009 11:16 PM CST up reply actions

if you think anyone can cover worse than Scandrick has then you haven’t been watching him very closely

knee jerk reaction

That is the funniest crap I have seen in a while……And I agree total knee jerk reaction!

Scandrick

Is not playing well. No doubt about it. But seriously, who would we replace him with? We are thin at CB after Newman and Jenkins.

So, if the Jets cut Darelle Revis this week, I’m all for picking him up and giving Scandrick the boot. Otherwise, we gotta roll with the ones we got. Anyway, I’d rather have a struggling young player than a fading old one. He’ll get better— I’m sure of it.

by Taoboy on Dec 11, 2009 9:52 AM CST reply actions

I understand what you’re saying, and I know we don’t have options right now. I just don’t enjoy the fact that only a few posts have mentioned how absolutely awful he has been, and any that do are swept under the rug with “oh was good last year, this is just an off year, let him work through it”. At some point you need to try something different, especially if teams start to attack him more like it seems they’ve been doing. If teams start continually converting third downs because of his cushions, it’ll keep this defense on the field longer than they have to be and give the offense longer fields which we’ve seen is not a recipe for success.

Yeah

Hey man, I’m with you. There are a lot of cheerleaders on this site that will put on the blinders not matter what is happening on the field. I’m all for supporting the team but there is nothing wrong with calling out a sub-par performance. Just look at all the people who are still defending Bobby Carpenter.

Speaking of Carpenter, anyone know who was drafted one spot after we snagged Barbie in the 2006 draft? Antonio Cromartie, pro-bowl corner for our upcoming opponents, the Chargers. Wow, imagine if we had grabbed Cromartie instead? It would have solved the Scandrick problem and the Barbie problem. Thanks, Parcells!
