Jerry on MBIII

Jerry Jones wants to see Marion Barber back to his old role as the 4th quarter punisher.

Jones: Barber should shoulder late load

I agree. The Cowboys should start with Tashard Choice, pepper in some Felix Jones as a change of pace, and for act III bring in MB III. The running game hasn't been very effective, and when it has it's been Choice and Jones. I think Barber can be very effective, just not as the first quarter lead back. Thoughts?

Closer

I’d like it, too. I’m not sure I like JJ going public with it, but I agree with him.

agreed

The last suggestion worked out.. He called for Austin and it has worked. I completely agree with switching the roles-hop to it Wade and JG.

last two years we got away from that formula and we are paying for it

MBIII is not an every down back and therefore gets injured a lot

I just don't understand why we're reading about this in the paper or the wire?

Is this Dr. Jones’ public attempt to make himself look like a genius? Seems like this is a dicussion he could have had in Wades’ office, not something that needs to be broadcast..

Definitely would like to see some more Choice

If that means let MB3 pound the ball in the 4thQ instead of the 1stQ then it sounds good to me.

Main thing is for the O-line to open some holes for all the RB’s.

You can't stop Patrick Crayton, you can only hope to contain him.

Exactly.

He’s a great situational back and needs to be used that way. He’s overpaid for that role, but it is what it is.

Jimmy Johnson for GM.

Well, Jerry Jones is the one writing the checks.

And he’s the one that suggested it, so hopefully that makes it a little easier to see. I agree fully with Jerry on this, and am frankly surprised that Garrett hasn’t been smart enough to figure this out by himself without Jerry basically telling him what to do.

Whatever, Jerry

Barber closes when Dallas has a lead.

When have we last seen a 4th quarter lead for Barber to close down?

Against Washington? The passing game had to bail the team out in that 4th quarter.
Against Oakland? They scored on a late pass to Roy Williams to close out that game, but I can’t complain with a 17 point lead.

Against New York? Dallas didn’t lead in the 4th. They were trying to come from behind after two long Giants scores. Kind of hard to pound Marion Barber in the 4th when you are 14 points down.

I Think Jerry's Saying

They are mutually exclusive. He would prefer to see Barber at the end, rather than at the beginning:

I think the real question is, should he be finishing rather than beginning? In his Pro Bowl year, where he had his best year, [Barber was] finishing the game. If you recall, Julius Jones started the game. We injected the quickness of his speed there early.

Obviously, if we’re behind, especially by big margins, there’s no point in running Barber. That did not appear to be his point.

I get this train of thought

but… If Dallas gets off to better starts, there is a good chance we have the lead in the 4th.

I for one agree with Jerry.

RAF you’ve been awfully negative lately. Maybe Dallas could close out a game if Felix and tashard established a running game early.

If any back should replace MB3 as the starter

it definitely should be Felix Jones. He is far and away the most talented and explosive of the three and therefore should get the most touches.

I like Choice in the Razorback and think Garrett should keep him there.

CJ carries that offense a lot.

Felix can do the same for us. MB3 is not that guy, he is very valuable, but not a player you can build your offense around.

If any back should replace MB3 as a starter?

MB3 hasn’t really ever been an effective RB as a starter for the Cowboys ever since Julius left. He’s lost it. Maybe that’s hard for alot of people to accept, but he’s never been the back he was when he was in that role with Julius.

What game is it where Barber doesn’t get a majority of the carries from the beginning of the game ( and what few of them there are)?

How many losses must add up before Jason Garrett realizes himself that he is not doing a good enough job establishing the right running back, regardless of politics?

Does the money that was paid to Barber Warrant getting a majority of carries, regardless of his deteriorating skills?

How about being worried that Barber may fumble a game away in the 4th qtr?

These are all provacative, yet realistic questions. No one has the courage to ask them.

After the Pittsburgh debacle last year, I’ve been calling for Tashard to be the featured back. He’s not the one that has to prove he’s effective. He already has, against the best run defenses in the NFL.

If Jason Garrett wants to develop a running game, his best chance is to stick with Tashard Choice. As many people have written on the contrary, It still remains the best option. I’m skeptical (yet hopeful) that Felix can get the tough yards. The idea is to simply bring balance to the playcalls. Felix should be the 3rd down/situational back. Tashard is a workhorse, and should be used as such. Garrett’s rotation of the RB’s is wrong in my opinion.

By the way you write Terry, it always seems to sound of desperation that Tashard doesn’t get any meaningful minutes so that he can prove you wrong- that he should be the main back.
You have always said he should stay in the razorback- thus limiting him to about, what, 3 plays a game at most? Maybe, by saying that, you believe Barber should continue to be used heavily?
If Jimmy Johnson or Parcells was coach, they would have already benched Barber after the fumble in the Redskins game.

Choice is a good back, but he's not as good as MB3 and Felix

especially Felix. I think the coaches know more about the RBs than you do.

Read all the analysis

and the reality- Dallas cannot run the ball. Garrett can’t hide this fact.

You and everyone else can quote your opinion on how much you believe Felix and MB3 are better backs, and that’s fine.

Tashard can run the ball. That’s what Dallas needs right now, a hungry back.

And when it happens (if it happens, thanks to Garrett), I’ll be here to remind you of your 5 million posts that MB3 and Felix are better running backs than Tashard.

Your opinion does not change the fact that Dallas cannot run the ball.

Some people are predicting that San Diego will run the ball effectively and that we can’t run against they’re defense, one of the worse in the league. People like you probably want to get into a shoot out with the Chargers. How about something more basic and more important, like winning the game? That’s what will happen if Garrett plays Tashard Choice.

actually I've been advocating running the ball

against the Chargers because their run defense isn’t good and we need to keep their offense off the field. I think Garrett will have a game plan that attempts to do that

Funny...

Two years ago everyone was lobbying to make MB3 the starter…. and then he finally got that chance against the Giants in the playoffs.

Our running attack is “gimmicky”. All the delayed and misdirection plays worked early in the season, but teams have adjusted. While it’s certainly helped slow down the oppositions pass rush, our running game has stalled.

I keep hearing that we have the biggest offensive line in football, but we can’t pound the football for short yardage when we need it. Again, everything falls on Romo’s shoulders.

Loving MB3, but there is a big difference in the careers of the 3 headed monsters

Loving MB3,But I fear he is being mis-used since he became starter. People back then wanted MB3 as a starter because Julius seemed to always fall at the wind from the swiping hand of a defender. Add to that, the fact that Barber had more power and speed then, and you can see why everyone wanted Barber full time. He had alot of successful plays back then (i know it’s funny, because it was only 2 years ago). But alot of people, myself included, have always wanted to save Barber to close out games, and Barber was never an every-down all-purpose back in college. Niether was Felix.

Tashard Choice was not only an every down back in college at Georgia Tech, he was a successful one for every year he played there. This is the one single point of importance that can help Romo and the team on offense more than anything else.

What does

Choice being an “every down back” in college have to do with the RB situation now since none of these guys will be an “every down back” in the Emmit Smith mold? What does Barber splitting carries and Jones splitting carries have to do with Choice not splitting carries in college? Especially if Choice is going to split carries now? That argument makes no sense.

I give you credit for your persistence about Choice but he is the third best option. If you are going to make a chagne than you go to Felix. He is the one back that brings a different set of skills than the other two and is the best big play option.

by jevans1729 on Dec 13, 2009 5:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That set of skills you talk about

will not bring us a consistent first down on 3rd and 3. He has not proven (yet) that he is going to consistently get productive yardage between the tackles. He seems to be injury prone. we need to save him for the big play he brings to the offense, and line him up as a wr also. Your referring to using him as a feature back, which he never has been. Garrett needs to Have Tashard out there at the same time to put pressure on defenses.

MB3 doesn’t have the speed anymore. Tashard Choice isn’t our 3rd best option, he is our best option, to develop a running game. I’m not persistent, I’m just stating my opinion of what OUR team needs to do to win period.

I realize, Jevans, that alot of people are infactuated with the big play. I am infactuated with winning. I, myself, love what skills Felix posesses. But I also realize, by watching him run lately, that he seems to lack that step he is known for. His speed alone is not going to give you consistent results from him as a RB. He looked slow in that Giants game returning kicks. I don’t know what it is, injury, or what have you. But sitting him and Barber will benefit the team, and Garrett must do something. As an offensive coordinator, he is too vanilla. He must realize how important establishing the right running back is (go wit the hot hand). Garrett doesn’t realize the importance and significance of benching a player to motivate him. Right now, the Cowboys could use some motivation. If Garrett doesn’t sit MB3 and use Felix in a better way, I don’t know if we win a shootout with the Chargers. maybe we do, but I’m skeptical- in fact, I doubt it. Giving They’re offense the ball too much is not going to turn out good. I’d rather win. Run the ball with Tashard! Eat the clock! Have Phillip Rivers sit the bench! Help our passing game develop! We need this win badly. If we don’t win, our season is in jeapordy, and these coaches will be gone at the end of the year.

First of all

why does Felix have to run the ball on third and three and between the tackles no less? There are much better play calls on third and three. As for Felix, the man has averaged almost 8 yards a carry when he is allowed let’s say 10+ carries a game. That is college and pros. Choice was serviceable not spectacular in the games he started last year. I believe we were 1 and 2 in those games. So how does Choice GURANTEE us these wins? And now you want to bench Felix and Barber??!! Maybe they are banged up some but they are not on the injury report so I guess they are not INJURED. If they were injured, I would support them not playing. But benching them is ridiculous!!!

We've seen it before

What does it have to do with? how about this: Newsflash!

The Cowboys can’t run the ball! Barber and Felix have had a majority of the carries this year!

This may shock you too, but Tashard Choice ran the ball effectively against the best run defenses last year. Maybe you aren’t aware of that fact. There are no guarantees. One thing I can guarantee though, is if this offense doesn’t find the answer to developing a running game, there will once again be no playoffs. You can debate my opinion of both Barber and Felix being situational until you are blue in the face, but that is secondary to the importance of running the ball. Establish the run!

We don't need spectacular from our run game

we haven’t seen spectacular, only in small flashes, so you can’t even use that talking about the run offense and the rb’s. Serviceable will do. Serviceable, effective running. That’s all it takes. Not this getting tackled in the backfield, and then everyone saying there must be a problem. That aint gettin it done. Not the delay/draw either, that’s for sure.

Right Jevans

more drop back passes I presume? how about calling something that varies the playcalling on offense? They tried running to the outside with Felix. The Giants sniffed and snuffed that out.

Feel guilty even writing this, but

if MBIII got a small injury that puts him out for a couple of games, it would force the coaches to put Choice in to get more carries. I know this is bad Karma so I hope it does not happen. The reality is this coaching staff is not going to see the light unless their hand is forced. Or if coach J(the jerk)J makes it happen.

I love the passion MBIII brings, but the production is just not there. I truly think he is playing hurt, because there is no burst or runs after punishing hits like we saw last year before his injuries slowed him down. I recently watched last year’s Dallas filthy barn burner game. The main thing I took from that game other than the pleasure of seeing the Boys beat them filthy eagles was the speed and burst of MBIII for a second it was like I was watching another player. He may be playing hurt in an effort not to loose his job do to injury to a talented group of backs.

Does that help the team?

Does that help in December?

Get someone in there that can do the job…That has already proved he can do the job.

I want to see Tashard Choice.

This is not an opinion I made based on watching one game.
