Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Roy Williams sounds ready to take on the Saints.

"Might as well crown them, right?" Williams said before Tuesday's practice. "They’re undefeated. It’s December. We don’t have a chance."

Or is he just messing with the media?

"If we pack our bags and show up in New Orleans on Saturday night," Williams continued, "we should be victorious."

Great. Blackboard Material For An Elite Team

Dallas is an elite talent-level team that consistently underachieves, New Orleans is elite in talent and plays up to it’s ability. Ugh.

I think blackboard material is a joke

First of all, spoiled athletes making millions of dollars need someone to say something about them to motivate them?

Second of all, going 16-0 is more incentive than an average WR talking shit.

+1

If this does become some kind of bulletin board garbage then it will further my belief that football players are the most emotionally sensitive people out there. They sure seem to get their feelings hurt easily.

by robolundgren on Dec 15, 2009 7:26 PM CST up reply actions

You're kindding, right?

Pro sports are littered with enormous egos, and when enormous egos feel they’re being “disrespected”, it does something to motivate. And it’s not exactly like it’s specific to sports either.

You think the fact that because someone is a “spoiled athlete making millions of dollars” doesn’t make them human? Why does Brandon Jacobs play so well against us? Because he hates the Cowboys. In 2003 the Sacramento Kings had great blackboard material against the Mavs, and even though the Kings had the best record in the west many reporters considered the Mavs the up-and-coming team. Well it pissed them off and Sacramento massacred the Mavs.

by Lord Humungus on Dec 16, 2009 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

Maybe Sacramento was just better?

Either way, emotions play a part. How big of a part? That is up to the individual. I don’t think that really talented players need bulletin board material to play well. Do you think Payton Manning really gives a rat’s a$$ what the opposing corner says the week before they play? Would Ratliff play harder if the Saint’s center called him a Pu**y the Wednesday before the game? I don’t think so.

by GunsUp on Dec 16, 2009 8:16 AM CST up reply actions

Jacobs plays well against us?

In 8 career games, only has 2 100 yard games and 4 TD. His receiving TD this year was his first against us. 458 yards in 8 games, for an average of 57.25 per game.

Yea, his hatred of us really makes him play well against us….

4 of the 8 games, he had 40 yards or less. And I didn’t even count his rookie year when he only had 2 carries each game against us.

Mavs beat the Kings in 2003....

You are talking about 2004 when the Mavs stupidly ran out a lineup with Walker, Jamison, and a team that largely did not fit together. The Mavericks did not lose that series because there was bulletin material, but because the Mavs weren’t very good.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

If Dallas goes 3-0, they win the NFC East no matter what...

If Dallas goes 2-1 (assuming a Saints loss), they need the Giants or Eagles to lose an additional game (outside of an Eagles loss to the Cowboys) to make the playoffs.

If Dallas goes 1-2 (still assuming a win over the Eagles since that will be pretty necessary no matter what), the Giants will have to go 1-2 and the Eagles will have to lose out.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

The Saints have won alot of close games and everything is going right for them at this point.

I believe from watching them that their record is perfect but they are far from perfect. As a fan for many years , do not overestimate that fact and things can turn in a heartbeat.

Oh crap Tiger…….I just gave them motivation. How stupid can I be , talking trash and firing them up. Now they are sure to come in and just kill the Cowboys for what Roy and I said.

On a serious note: you are kidding me that a team that is undefeated here’s trash talk and just all the sudden whips the other team? You do realize they still have to play a desperate Cowboys team too? I mean there will actually be another motivated team on the other side of the line. Seriously, needing trash talk to motivate adults is ridiculous.

the Saints are primed to be picked off their first playoff game.

Why do I say that? Well, history is on my side. First, how many playoff games have the Saints won, ever? I want to say 1, but it might be 2. Second, the NFC’s top seed has been knocked off in their first home game the last two years (Cowboys, G-ants).

Couple that with they way they’ve played lately? Hmmmmmm.

Well, I was trying to be nice but

Your December record is current and on going…………………Ours is in the past. We have not been to a Super Bowl yet but neither did the Cowboys till their first one. What can I say, we had a shitty team for years but we also have the best winnig percentage in the NFL for the past 12 years(Just no Super Bowls). Last weeks win gave us the most wins by an NFC team ever. I realize that we have been the joke of the NFL for years but that was growing pains. We are still here and will be for years to come and as I see it, Jerry Jones is allowing your Cowboys to erode away till they will be the Laughing stock and I see that is already happening. Good Luck Saturday nite because you are going to need it caus my Saints are going to destroy your Cowboys just like the last game (07) in your house

All records are current and ongoing! Yet this is not a streak by any means (streaks are wins in row or loses) , so that is going into the past as you stated yours is too.

Well Eagle fans may have something to say on this tidbit lol

Cowboys were 13-3 just a few years ago and I am sure there has been a 14-2 team somewhere in the past in the NFC.

but even going 10-6 we still have to hope some things happen.
-giants need to lose at least once (49ers?, Redskins?, last game of season against Vikings?)
or
-packers can lose out (steelers, seattle, arizona) and we will have 3 NFC east teams likely in. if packers and Cowboys go 9-7 packers have the tie breaker.

anyways lets just win out and hope the giants, eagles, and packers lose from here on out.

The Raiders beat the Eagles, so it’s entirely possible. How likely is it? I’m not sure. I’d say that the Cowboys have a 30% chance of winning. If I had money on the game, I’d have to have pretty good odds to make a bet on the Boys, but I don’t think it’s impossible.

Even the Lions win games.

Go Cowboys. If we show up with our A+ game, which so far this season we’ve still not done for 60 minutes, we can beat the Saints. Again… is that possible? We’ll know soon.

The Saints are not perfect

But what makes their season so special is the mix of talent, good coaching and LUCK that they’ve had. They’ve had some damn good luck, some questionable calls that led to a few wins. But the bottom line is they are 13-0. However, they are not like the Patriots a few years ago that beat everyone by 30. They are winning every way possible.

They are not perfect. They might not even be the favorite in the NFC. However, they are DAMN good.

I see this game totally differently from my fellow fans...

NO has sowed up their division and a first round bye perhaps even home field throughout. What do they have to play for? 16-0? It’s been done already. If Dallas’ offense can get untracked and SCORE TDs early, I see us winning this game going away. NO is basically where we were in 07 with Philly. Nothing to play for but injuries. IMHO of course.

They are not significantly better than Dallas in any category but have played well as a team throughout. And again, their defense is their offense. Don’t get behind early, run effectively and winning is a very real possibility.

by Keys80 on Dec 15, 2009 7:41 PM CST reply actions

The biggest difference

between the two teams is confidence. Dallas has little to none, always expecting the bottom to fall out.

Nick Folk is the perfect example. In fact, he should be the face of the franchise for this season. No other player represents what the Cowboys are this year…full of promise, talented, but ultimately a good shrink away from being a complete team.

Regarding Roy’s quote. Did anyone catch Michael Jordan’s Hall of Fame speech? Athletes at this level are ALWAYS looking for ways to further motivate themselves. Of course, an underachieving receiver saying it was thing and Romo is seeing is another. But it is bulletin board material and it will probably result in a more severe beat down.

The Saints are 13-0

but they have literally come out of nowhere – the past two years they were 8-8 and 7-9 with largely the same cast of characters. It’s not like they are the Colts, who always start off undefeated (at least it seems like it). The Saints are who we throught they are and have been since 2006 – a great offense but a suspect defense.

Now they have Gregggg Williams and Darren Sharper, which has improved the defensive rankings somewhat, but they are still lower half of the league in total yards and points allowed. The only quality QB’s they’ve faced in the past 13 games were Eli Manning, Tom Brady and maybe Matt Ryan, and they handled them quite well. Yet they’ve allowed huge games to nobodies like Kevin Kolb, Jason Campbell and Chris Redman. They’ve also given up monster rushing games to several opponents.

Their pass rush hasn’t been anything special, just 27 sacks in 13 games, or barely 2 a game. The main difference has been turnovers – 37, or nearly 3 a game. This has made all the difference, but 13 fumble recoveries and 8 defensive touchdowns? That’s a bit lucky.

The question is, can Dallas – with its quality QB and solid running game, take advantage of the suspect Saints defense? My gut says no. I see an extremely raucous crowd on a Saturday night giving New Orleans an insane home field advantage. We haven’t seen Flozell commit any penalties in some time – I suspect that will change dramatically. The offense couldn’t take advantage of, what, a 3rd string Charger nose tackle enough to establish a dominating ground game, or a decimated Packer defense to barely avoid getting shut out, what makes us think that Dallas will score on a consistent basis on Saturday? If the Cowboys fall behind early, there will be blood in the water and who knows how bad it could get.

That said, the Cowboys have the weapons to make it interesting. They’ll need at least 31 points to make it a game, probably more. And oddly enough, as much as it appears that the Saints are vulnerable to a ground attack and you want to control the clock, part of me wants Dallas to come out throwing every down and playing like they do the last few minutes of the last few games – with a sense of urgency that the season is on the line. And guess what? It is!

Go Cowboys!

The argument could be made that before this year

The Saints were bigger underachievers than the Cowboys the past few years.

Great....

A player (Roy Williams) who has had plenty of games where he hasn’t shown up…..and plays on a team (our Cowboys) who if we are lucky show up for half a game….now thinks that if they just show up they will win against an undefeated team that plays their best in front of their rowdy and loud crowd who have all day to eat gumbo and get drunk.

We were not winning anyway….and now that he spout off at the mouth we will for sure not sneak up on them.

we will now be blown out….

For the Saints fan who said they had the best winning % of the past 12 years...

LOL!

Saints record from 1998-present 92-97 (not even a winning record)
Cowboys record 97-92
Colts 130-59
Patriots 127-62

Those are the only 4 I looked at. Willing to be a lot more teams have better than us and the Saints (Eagles and Steelers come to mind)

Side note, Peyton Manning is rediculous. They have had 12+ wins every year since 2003, 10+ every year since 2002, and 10 or more all but 2 years since 1998. WOW!

from my limited knowledge on birthmarks.......

that’s why a lot of people don’t have them removed in the first place because they leave a scar. Brees comes from a very affluent family in Austin. His mother was a very powerful attorney in Westlake before she died. I said that to say, money is not the reason for not having the birth mark removed earlier.

Is it possible that Roy is going through some mental gymnastics for himself? I mean Geez, he’s just repeating back what the media is trying to grind into his head, all the rest of the Cowboys head, and the whole freaking sports world: COWBOYS GONNA LOSE, HA, HA HA.

How do we expect any self respecting man to react to that? Slink away, and say ok, uncle. You’re right, there’s no reason for us to believe anything about ourselves at this point. We are crap. What the hell was I thinking, that we even have a smidge of a smidge’s chance to win. My bad.

C’mon, even Roy Williams the crappy scrub who shouldn’t even have ever crossed Jerry’s mind can be expected to take a beat down from the mediots before the game even starts.

yeah

and I happen to agree with him. If (and that’s a big if) we show up with a sense of urgency ( I mean attack from start to finish) we can win. We have to execute to perfection, no stupid penalties, etc. we have a good chance of winning. We can’t just show up flat and uninpired and expect to win.

by texstar on Dec 16, 2009 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

the offense has to be clicking on all cylinders

I’m confident we can score 30-35 while holding them to 28-31. But youre right, all three phases need to play well.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Dec 16, 2009 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

um.......

I wouldn’t go that far saying we can score 30-35 points. What makes me nervous about this game is the false starts because of the crowd noise in the dome. We like to jump pre-maturely anyway and so this is a tough challenge-especially Flo. Hopefully, Garrett is working on a lot of silent count stuff this week. I wouldn’t have Romo do too many audibles with this group (especially Flo) because they won’t be able to hear him.

by texstar on Dec 16, 2009 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

I'll be shocked if we didn't score a lot of points

Their defense made Campbell and Redman look like all-pros and I know Romo is a much better qb than both of those guys.

I guess after someone tells you that their team that went 92-97 the past 12 years had the best win % in the NFL over that period….and that their 13 wins was the most ever for an NFC team…..

well after that, you expect things to be a little….off

one big difference Terry.......

Campbell and Redman both played at home against the Saints. We’re playing them on their turf. I’m not saying that it can’t be done, but the Saints are much tougher at home. Good example would be the Pats.

by texstar on Dec 16, 2009 2:41 PM CST reply actions

Pats just played awful in that game

I’m not sold on the Superdome being that much of an advantage for the Saints, I think playing in a dome helps us as much as it helps them.

by Terry on Dec 16, 2009 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know about, you don't think the crowd noise won't affect Dallas' tendency to false start

Of course, the Cowboys getting an early lead would shut the crowd up, so let’s hope for that

Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey

by Seanrude on Dec 16, 2009 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

exactly

If we make enough plays on offense, the crowd noise shouldn’t be a factor and Flo false starts anyways with or without crowd noise.

by Terry on Dec 16, 2009 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

can't speak for anyone else......

I’m not saying that the Saints can’t be beaten at home, but you have to realize the things that are going against you going in. The crowd noise is a problem-so you have to score early to take the crowd out. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that you have tough sledding. If you go in with blinders on thinking everythings going to be just fine, then you will get beat. it’s called preparation. You like to use the word execution. Well, if you want to execute, you have to be prepared for things like crowd noise. You have to alter your game plan and try something different-not the same old running plays that don’t work. How about throwing some little screens to Ogletree like we did in the past? As Herm Edwards said, You play to win the game and not to play to barely hang on and win.

by texstar on Dec 16, 2009 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

I never said everything would be just fine

Never said that at all, I’m just saying that playing inside favors us as much as it favors them because weather will not be a factor. I understand crowd noise is a factor, but they’ve played before loud crowds before.

It’s just my opinion, but I think crowd noise in the NFL is overrated, these are pros and they know how to play under those conditions.
