What I want in a Head Coach

The number one trait I want in my head coach is a complete and utter hatred of losing.

Star-divide

I want my HC to make everyone's life so miserable after a loss that the players will do everything they can to avoid one.  I recall Ken Norton Jr. discussing Jimmy Johnson's demeanor after a loss.  He said the man was almost insufferable.  The players hated it... but that was the point.

I believe our current coach doesn't like losing, but I don't think he hates it either.  After the loss to the Giants he seemed to think all was well because we still had a winning record.  Memo to Wade: Lots of teams with winning records don't make the playoffs.

I don't know who our next HC will be, but I sure hope he hates the eff outta losing.

Nick Eatman has a gut feeling

That we could see Jimmy Johnson return to coach the Cowboys. I know it seems way out there but that would be interesting to say the least if that could be a real possibility. Eatman said he had no inside information and that if you asked him 4 months ago, he would have said no way. But now he wouldnt be surprised to see it happen.

I read Boys will be Boys and if the accounts are even partially accurate in there. Jimmy fits your bill exactly.

That would really surprise me

I read an article about Jimmy saying how he had turned his life around because when he was coaching, he neglected his family and was totally obsessed.

He can’t be hurting for money so unless he wants to come back and win so he can have the right to tell Jerry “I told you so” for the rest of their lives, that seems like the longest of long shots.

by Billito on Dec 16, 2009 4:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

there is absolutely no way I see that happening

I like Nick and think he is one of the better beat writers covering the Cowboys, but he is way off base here. Jimmy has it made in the shade with his FOX gig, I’d be beyond shocked if he came back to coaching.

So would I

But it was one of the most interesting theories I had heard lately.

by Impatient on Dec 16, 2009 5:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No Jimmy

I don’t want to see him come back. Let me enjoy the memories without a lame, Joe Gibbs-type comeback.

by Taoboy on Dec 17, 2009 8:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it'll happen either

But with the right coordinators, Jimmie could be VERY intriguing.

by tyhall on Dec 16, 2009 5:46 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah that was on Monday's Lunch Break, it was like a you had to be there moment because if you did not hear it you

cannot explain the situation via 3rd person account. Nick made it an appealing idea because it is the ultimate challenge for any new coach to come in and take this team to the super bowl. Jimmy could be talked into the situation because it would be JJ admitting that he needs Jimmy and that his way has failed. JJ would have to be very desperate and be very convincing, but it would be an amazing story if it did happen. But I agree with a lot of guys here the chances are pretty low.

Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

Thanks for clarifying the situation.

I think Wade hates losing

it’s just that his personality doesn’t show it as well as coaches who are more emotional. Same thing with Romo.

so. . .

Does he show his “hatred of losing” to his players, in private? Because that’s all that matters, Terry.

by dfan77 on Dec 17, 2009 6:10 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure Wade acts much differently towards his players privately

and actually there have been several players on record as saying so. Fans only see coaches on the sidelines and at PCs, I’m sure they show a different side behind closed doors.

What’s galling about our current coach is after the last two hard-to-take losses Wade has been cracking jokes with the media. Today he signed off by whistling a tune to the amusement of some of the local reporters. Wade sickens me.

For the love of the Star I give my undying devotion.

The coach you're thinking of...

Is Gruden. Have you seen him after losses? Scariest MF you’ll ever see. And with the talent this team has, I don’t think he would accept losing.

by Alexcomestokill on Dec 16, 2009 7:25 PM CST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Negative Ghost Rider

Gruden can stay on MNF as far as I’m concerned. I dont want him or the six QBs he will sign to give Romo pressure.

I dont hate Gruden.

Best line ever….

I wouldn't mind Gruden

. . .much better upgrade from Gailey, Wade, Campo, et. al., don’t you think?

And do you REALLY think JJ would let him sign up a bunch of QBs to challenge Romo?

Really?

by dfan77 on Dec 17, 2009 6:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

well the rumor going around now is

the possibility of Gruden going to Wash. to be with Bruce Allen. Don’t know if there’s any truth to it, but I don’t think he will be coming to Dallas

Gruden

Is fine as a head coach but keep that guy away from GM responsibilities. He is a terrible judge of talent. Not that the Joneses are any better.

True

He inherited a Tampa team put together by Dungy and won a superbowl. It was all downhill from there.

I fear the difference between Jimmy Johnson circa 1992 and 2010

would be the like difference between Elvis 1956 and 1977…not pretty, and kind of sad.

That said, I’d love to see it.

The answer is yes

Gruden is a caricature.

He always struck me as someone putting on a show. Players see through that quickly.

Jimmy today doesn’t have the hunger. I don’t think Holmgren has much fire left either.

Perhaps Cowher, but I can’t see him putting up with Jerry.

In the end, Jerry will have to go before a true HC can be hired.

by HutHut on Dec 17, 2009 7:50 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Old Coaches

Don’t have the energy of the young guys. If you’re hiring, look for a young guy. McDaniel, Harbaugh, Tomlin, Whisenhunt, Payton. The list goes on and on. But whoever you hire has to have cut his teeth as a Coordinator and done well. I think Garrett is pretty good considering how poor his Offensive Line is. Bigg Davis is poor in space, Flozell can’t move, Kosier loses weight during the season and therefore strength and Gurode isn’t bright enough to be a center, it seems. I wouldn’t mind putting Garrett in there as opposed to someone like Cowher who took TEN YEARS to win a Super Bowl. Garrett is already in the family. Give him a good LT who can move and run block and have Brewster come in at LG next year the offense might really take off.

by DatNguyenNguyenScenario on Dec 17, 2009 10:12 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Garrett might be really interesting…

…if he’s able to bring in BOTH a new OC and DC. A few years ago his idea was to bring in Cam Cameron as the OC and Dom Capers as the DC had he been made the HC. That’s pretty impressive. This indicates to me that Garrett is not looking to call the offense and would rather oversee things as a true head man. He might do very well in this role.

This whole three head coaches affair they have now is a joke and it might be time promote Garrett and enrich the assistants staff.

The 2009 Dallas Cowboys: Talk to me in December.
The NFC East has won 11 Super Bowls; oddly none of those have come courtesy of the Eagles.

Dude

Garrett is part of the problem. If he is made head coach, that will be seriously depressing.

by Taoboy on Dec 17, 2009 8:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

This might sound crazy...

but I just want a coach that wins. Not just regular season, not just playoffs, but Superbowls. Not saying every year, just simply a winner. Like my football coach told us in HS: “Second place is the first loser”. We need more hardware, or at least start some winning playoff runs and soon.

by Mac_24 on Dec 17, 2009 12:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely no way Jimmy returns

I don’t understand why people keep bringing this up.

Would you, COULD you come back after accomplishing everything you could want in your chosen career, being practically universally respected and admired by your peers, making millions of dollars, aging past your prime anyway, and then spending the last 10 years playing and relaxing in your backyard which happens to look exactly like a Caribbean postcard?

No way. He has too good of a life now and has already accomplished too much to ever return to the 24 / 7 / 365 job that head coaching an NFL team is.

He has gone on record numerous times in recent years about how he grew to hate the person he had to be in order to get the best out of his teams. He despised being the bad guy and the hard case and the coach that could never be pleased, but he knew anything less would not give him the results he wanted.

He’s become a different person since those days. He’s enjoying life, enjoying family, enjoying scuba diving and fishing daily, and enjoying picking up a huge paycheck for working about 20 weekends a year at the FOX studios.

And there is absolutely no guarantee he would succeed the second time around in Dallas.

Garrett has a better chance

of becoming the next head coach. I think Jerry would love to be seen as the genius who recognized and developed the next Sean Payton.

Jerry is a shrewd businessman and he’s got a significant investment in Garrett. He hand picked him (BEFORE the head coach!). Jerry paid him BIG money to keep him here. The Jerrys of the world don’t just flush their big investment down the drain because some fans don’t like the play calling on 4th-and-1.

You think Garrett isn’t telling Jerry in private that this offensive line is not that great? You think he can’t go into great detail about the deficiencies that he’s working around that Rafael has detailed here so well?

Garrett is the next head coach with a more seasoned defensive coordinator brought in to take over for Wade. And Wade won’t even be fired. He just won’t be renewed.

Garrett as HC

Garrett Moss the Inside Linebackers Coach from the Pack as the new Defensive Coordinator. Bring some guy like Cam Cameron in as Asst. Head Coach/ Offensive Coordinator. Done and done.

thats a guy I take a look at…Gruden would be my choice but i do not see him leaving the booth just yet

I'm not advocating Garrett

I’m just trying to figure out what Jerry is thinking and how the decision looks from his perspective rather than go on and on about who I think it should be.

My opinion doesn’t matter. But looking at it from Jerry’s perspective it may make much more sense to promote from within while not making wholesale changes to the organization.

by Behe on Dec 18, 2009 1:00 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm...

Not sure it makes sense to promote from within when your coaching has been terrible. It’s either the players or the coaching— and who is responsible for the players? Jerry and Stephen Jones. So, ask yourself, is Jerry more likely to conclude that he has done a lousy job of evaluating talent and building the roster, or is he more likely to conclude that his coaching staff needs to be fired and replaced?

by Taoboy on Dec 18, 2009 9:23 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Think about it for a minute though

Jerry hired him BEFORE Wade. He has invested a lot in him and must think he sees something. I’m far from the Garret bandwagon but it won’t surprise me when he takes over for Wade.

by Mac_24 on Dec 18, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's the key

Jerry hired Garrett first. Then he was rewarded with Garrett’s high-powered offense of 2007. Then he paid him big money to stay. I don’t think his opinion of Garrett has changed one bit.

Obviously, the offense is not perfect (GB, Wash, SD), but I think Jerry feels it’s good enough to win a championship, IF they had a reliable defense. But the defense remains suspect: lack of consistent QB pressure/sacks, very few takeaways, critical failures when the game is in the balance, etc….
