Mayock

speaks the truth I think. Adams looked slow on those plays.

Kinda hard to watch.

For Xmas, I say we all chip in and get Raf one of those monitors to draw circles on.

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

from the replay I couldn't tell

Was it Sensabaugh that gave up the TD to Gates? Who is the safety on the other play?

Looks like Sensei

I think he matches up better on Shockey, though.

The Saints have another decent TE too that’s been getting involved recently. From UT, I think.

you're talking about David Thomas.......

He’s a very good TE that I wish NE wishes they had back. He played a really important part with Vince Young when they won the Championship.

It was Sens

It was just a great route.. Gates impossible to guard one on one on a timing route.

I rewatched the game on NFL Replay tonight.

We have problems on the line, and at safety. Sensabaugh definitely isn’t playing as well as he was earlier in the season. On the goal line stand, on the 3rd down run all Barber had to do was extend his hands across the line and he would have scored.

At least 2 big pass interference plays weren’t called on us. We got lucky they weren’t called. Yes, there was one on Roy too that wasn’t called but we scored anyway on that drive. One of them was more blatant than the 35 yarder on Sensabaugh on San Diego’s first TD. We basically gave them the TD on that play.

To me the biggest problem in this game was the defense couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down. We continue to give up 3rd and long way too often. We really need a playmaker safety and a dynamic DE.

I think the Cowboys are a few offensive linemen and an elite safety away

from being a really good team that can be the best in the league, hopefully we start addressing those needs next off season.

WOW

looks like we need a new left tackle…

by koreyvkWA on Dec 16, 2009 4:25 PM CST reply actions

To sum up:

So, basically, our offensive line just sucks-old and slow-and that’s all they can do.
(And they supposedly had 3 Pro-Bowlers a few years ago!)

Our safeties are better than RW and Keith Davis, but still not really quick.

The team needs to get younger which = faster. And NFL “Fast” means quick, not just straight downfield fast. (Ask the Oakland Raiders.)

I’ve been saying for 2 years-where’s the speed on this team? Why don’t some young guys get snaps? What happened to Ogletree? He can’t get in the mix because Crayton is that good?

This is what happens when a GM is too quick to reward a good season or two w/ a contract that locks a guy up. It sounds good at the time, but in reality in the NFL you need to constantly cycle in new/younger guys, who are coached up and ready to play, even if it means some mistakes along the way.

Colts, eagles, Pats get this.

by Realist Larry on Dec 16, 2009 4:26 PM CST reply actions

Yes, quick guys are underrated.

Totally agree…we need some quickness not just speed.

Here is our team speed:

Defense: Ware, Ratliff, maybe Jenkins. Not Newman anymore, although he’s not slow either.

Offense: FelixJ (still? I hope!), Austin, Ogletree maybe.

That’s it.

Less than a handful on each side of the ball.

by Realist Larry on Dec 16, 2009 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, teams can't expect to win when they have to go 80 yards on 15 plays anymore.

You do all that work and it can be wiped out on the ensuing kickoff because the opposition has a speedy playmaker.

Then, you gotta go out and work again.

Excuse my ignorance......

but it always seems to be on the pulling guards that we have these problems. Can we not do some other line movements that may be more suited to their strengths? Just asking

by texstar on Dec 16, 2009 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

Dunno.

I guess they still expect Flo to get to that second level.

Side note: Swear I read somewhere that Procter is the blocking TE on short-yardage. Wasn’t he an eligible receiver once or twice last week?

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

by Aaron Novinger on Dec 16, 2009 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

I think I saw that too about Procter.......

like I said, I don’t know much about O’lines, but why can’t we do more of Sparano’s OLine stuff? Apparently, he has a much different philosophy than Houck because he fired him when Sparano was made HC in Miami. I’m not blaming Houck, but if you have 5 OLineman that can’t seem to deliver week in and week out, logic tells me that maybe you need to adjust your Oline schemes to fit your personnel instead of trying to force them into something that they are not capable of doing.

by texstar on Dec 16, 2009 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

That's true, in a sense, but Houck can't do that at this point in the season.

That would then also be limiting the types of plays Garrett can call, which sucks if he sees something they can take advantage of.

If only Flo can get those types of blocks, maybe we see more balance on the line. Just a few more games, Flo…just a few more.

It’s funny to expect that because at camp he was the slowest guy out there on sprints. Not that he should be fast or anything, but guys like Hurd were lapping him!

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

by Aaron Novinger on Dec 16, 2009 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

unfortunately, I agree.........

it just seems that they could have made adjustments much earlier in the season for this group (like say training camp). This problem didn’t just pop up. It was there last year as well. That’s my biggerst problem with this coaching staff. They seem to be slow to adjust whenever there’s problems. It’s like they say, here’s the scheme and we will work with the scheme no matter what. Then they blame it on execution when the guys they have can’t do it. A good example of this is Green Bay. They had a horrible line before we played them. They have adjusted their line and have won 5 games straight.

by texstar on Dec 16, 2009 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

Green Bay had to hit a real low to do that.

The Cowboys didn’t hit a consistent skid early this year, so by feeling they are close to winning each game and haven’t been blown out, they can’t justify making such adjustments.

With Colombo out, it’s very very limiting to do anything about it now.

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

What's surprising is that I thought the NFC was going to be much tougher this year.

Chicago and SF, and Seattle-who many were touting-haven’t done much. Atlanta has slipped back.
And so we are right in the middle of it, if the D can pass rush and the O can play a couple of good games.

At this point, I’m checking this season off, though-if they beat NO I’ll bet they find a way to lose to Washington anyways.
My positive from this year is the growth in Romo. i like what I see and it gives us hope for the future.

Best play of the SD game-Romo’s being chased out of the pocket-looks behind him and tucks the ball away with both hands! I gave him a cheer.

by Realist Larry on Dec 16, 2009 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, Roy's covering it up too.

Protecting the ball is always reason for hope.

I agree with you on the NFC; I just think the big teams are just so dominating and the up-and-coming teams keep losing to AFCers like the Broncos and Raiders.

I would move Colombo over rather than start Free at LT.

Either way, Adams needs to go. He’s a huge liability both in terms of penalties and the fact he’s too fat and slow to be either an effective run blocker or to deal with speed rushers on the left side.

if Gurode doesn’t take out the guy right in front of him, he probably blows up the play.

by foyesboys on Dec 16, 2009 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, well,

I wrote on this back, when, February, March? This is not a power line.
Flo, is Flo.
Kosier wears down and loses weight. I was told he finishes seasons 15-20 lbs. lighter than he starts them. Notice how much they run right these days?

Gurode can block but he’s not the sharpest blade in the drawer.

Bigg gives up sacks. He’s got so-so feet and has trouble hitting quick targets, run or pass.

In ’05, they drafted front 7 guys, heavily — Ware, Spears, Canty, Ratliff;
In ’06 and ’07 they went after LBs

In ’08, they went for skill position speed — Jones, Bennett & corners — Scandrick, and Jenkins

Last year, they took another crack at the defensive back seven — 4 LBs a S and two CBs.

Now, linemen. There’s no excuse. It’s the one area they have not hit hard in recent years. Their trend in the Ciskowski years is to carpet bomb one two two areas.
In ’10 — OL and DL.

They’ve got Brewster. Two more OL are coming this year, high.

I agree, I would really like to get a tackle and an elite center like Murkice Pouncey if he comes out

We may not need to Carpet bomb DL this year. with the uncapped year we can put tenders on them. And some might not agree with this, but I would really like to sign Wilfork and move Rat to end (which is his original position). Fact of the matter is our ALY is 4.2 in the mid/guard area and teams target us there 55% of the time, which is pretty dang high.

This is a deeper FS draft than last year. And they’re like RBs, they fall a little bit unless they have Sean Taylor/Laron Landry level grades.

Texas players usually stay for 4 years

I think VY, Jamaal Charles, Jermichael Finley, and like one other guy are the only ones to ever leave early under Mack Brown’s tenure. But Thomas said if he gets a first-round grade then he’ll probably declare this year.

by Joon on Dec 17, 2009 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

actually

VY was there for 4 yrs. if you remember. He red-shirted his freshman yr. behind Simms. Unfortunately Charles was not real bright in school and he was getting pressure from his family to go out early.

by texstar on Dec 17, 2009 12:59 PM CST up reply actions

I really hope so Raf.

I thought Jerry would’ve learned his lesson last year when TR went down injured, to draft or aquire some OL to protect TR this year. You mess with fire long enough, your going to get burned. We are fortunate that TR hasn’t gotten hurt with all the running for his life moments this line puts him in, not to mention how they limit the playbook or their ineptness on plays called.

by T Zig on Dec 16, 2009 7:18 PM CST up reply actions

Big Problem though-what if it's a weak year in that area of need?

If we’re going to shock and awe for OLine, then there’d better be a lot of good ones available!

I imagine they'll

do what they’ve been doing. Kosier, Bigg, Columbo — free agents. Bring in new meat via the draft and FA to see what is what. They won’t change for change’s sake, but I bet they no longer throw good money after bad.

by Joey2zs on Dec 16, 2009 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I was thinking about your write up the other day when I watched this. Good stuff.

I’d like to read your opinions on why we have no problems moving the ball up and down the field, but are middle of the pack in scoring. Also what you think about why they won’t put Barber in more of a closer role where he was successful before. Peete and Wade have talked about starting Barber to impose a physical presence on the game. But looking back, I think they’ve only scored on their first drive once this season (FG in opener against TB, but Folk has also missed two FGs in two other games on opening drives). When I watch them, starting Barber doesn’t really look like they are imposing their will on the opponent.

+1. Those December "swoons" are about a worn-out, thin O line as much as anything. Romo

has taken the lion’s share of blame for problems on offense that I think start with the line. They were getting him killed at the end of last season; no QB could endure that.

by Fernie67 on Dec 16, 2009 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

The guy who most impressed me was...

Deon Anderson. I watched him the whole game and have no idea why we ditch the 2 back system. He is one of our most underrated and underutilized players. Losing Colombo was huge, Deon really helps fill that void since we are left with pattycakers on the left and right tackle spots.

plus, anyone think a screen pass or two a game would be useful and keep defenses honest? We really are just not using our talent to their fullest potential with the right packages.

this saturday is going to be a major turning point for the cowboys this season and for the future. it begins…

c'mon

He’s neither under rated or under utilized. He’s a fullback. He’s rated exactly right and utilized correctly. He’s a blocking fullback, who, in the running scheme, is 5th behind Jones, MBIII, Choice, and Romo.

by Joey2zs on Dec 16, 2009 8:04 PM CST up reply actions

agreed...

… but it would’ve been better if Garrett went to a conventional set and had Cricket lead MB3 on that 4th down running play at the goal line in the first half last Sunday.

Is playing smart too much to ask?

You think there is any chance we draft a center fairly high,

and kick Andre over to left guard? That makes us bigger and more physical at guard, and a bit more cerebral at center.

OBSERVATION - EMOTION = COMMON SENSE

yes

your correct , thats when bp was hc he decided that gurode was not cutting it at guard.

by traderchris on Dec 16, 2009 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

then we had the rotation at center

I guess Gurode had the size and Al Johnson had the brains

by MicThaRock on Dec 16, 2009 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

lol

so true , put them together youd have one hell of a player. gurode might be the dumbest football iq guys on our team.

by traderchris on Dec 16, 2009 6:34 PM CST up reply actions

True, and strange

Gurode was a monster pulling G at Colorado and could not click there as a pro.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 16, 2009 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

i thought Center was a position that REQUIRED iq

i didn’t expect it to be where we hide our lowest iq

It's not that I'm saying we're due a playoff win, but I didn't have my license to drive when we won our last one...

we have the most overated ol in football. were stuck with these guys because we bombed on all our ol draft picks for 10 yrs so jerry jones seemed inclined to overpay all of these guys with ridiculos contracts.

2010 draft =

a kickoff specialist so far

by om4bu on Dec 16, 2009 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

we'll get a chance to find out in the near future

theres still time for that draft to pan out. I think it will mostly depend on Butler, WIlliams, Brewster and Hamlin.

by foyesboys on Dec 16, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

three of their top five picks spent time on the injured list with severe injures

and the fourth of that group is a QB.

Brewster would probably be the starting LG right now if he had not injured his shoulder. He probably would not have begun the season as a starter, but I’ll bet he would be there now, as Larry Allen did in ‘94. I don’t think Kosier is going to be re-signed. He’ll get first crack at LG next year.

Jason Williams was making a move when he badly sprained an ankle. He would at the very least be pushing for nickel LB work. But he missed the last two weeks of camp and the first six games. It’s very hard to get a rookie up to speed when he’s that far behind.
Carpenter isn’t coming back. Williams will get first shot at his spot and will challenge for a starting spot next year. He’s too athletic not to and both ILBs struggle in coverage. Williams can fly. I’ll be very surprised if he’s not in the lineup a lot next year.

Brandon Williams tore an ACL. We’ll see about him in ’10. He looked good early in camp and hit a wall.

Victor Butler may have a future. He’s got the edge speed for the NFL. He needs to work on counter moves and build up some strength. He’s had his moments.

Mike Hamlin broke a wrist and missed the first half of the season,. See Jason Williams for the skinny on his stunted developmental curve.

Stephen McGee is developing.

Anything really wrong with these guys, or extraordinarily bad luck?

by Rafael Vela on Dec 16, 2009 8:32 PM CST up reply actions

the jury is still out IMO

we’ll know in a few years whether this was a good draft or not. I have high hopes for Hamlin though

by Terry on Dec 17, 2009 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

what choice did Jerry have?

Parcells and Ireland stuck out on O-linemen.

Draftees:
Al Johnson
Justin Bates
Jacob Rogers
Stephen Peterman
Rob Petitti
Pat McQuistan
E.J. Whitley
James Marten
Doug Free

Free is the only guy to play and it took injury to get him into the lineup.

Free agents
Ryan Young
Jason Fabini
Marco Rivera
Kyle Kosier
Marc Colombo

Parcells game Colombo a year and a half to rehab his mangled knee and he’s the only significant hit of his regime. He had complete control of the free agent checkbook and the draft and he struck out completely.

Jerry, for all his whiffs, drafted Flozell and Andre Gurode. Bigg Davis has warts, but he’s better than anybody Parcells every acquired.

Maycock

picked the Cowboys to win Saturday. Makes me feel kinda good, because the guy knows his football.

Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.

but his reasoning had nothing to do with Xs and Os analysis

He is picking them to win simply because their backs are up against the wall and they will be desperate.

I hope they are desperate............

because last year when they had to play desperate they didn’t. I know this is a different team, but I want to see a desperate team playing with urgency. This IS our playoff game

Bring Back Jimmy Johnson

Just finished watching the doc “The U”. Watching the program reminded me of what a master motivator and winner Jimmy Johnson was he made every player on the roster take losses personally. Letting a team come into your house and beat you was like letting someone come into your house and sleep with your wife.

Jimmy Johnson=swagger, wade phillips=indifference.

by Este on Dec 16, 2009 10:37 PM CST reply actions

Ha!

Stephen would have to commit patricide and take over the franchise before that would happen.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 16, 2009 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

All those calling for a return of Jimmy J(which isn't happening anyway)

need to look at his Dolphin years after the DAL championships.

As to the plays being reviewed – that deep sideline pass was designed to hang out the Safety and it did. My problem is 2 deep vertical routes demand time to throw. That play works because the pass rush didn’t force an early or inaccurate throw.

I’ve been saying since the PHL game, offside LB’s are chasing down RB’s from behind because they are not cut off after the G pulls. It’s clear teams have seen this on film and are gameplanning for it.

Agree we need to carpet bomb OL this draft.

Always be more than you appear and never appear to be more than you are

by tdships on Dec 17, 2009 10:18 AM CST reply actions

the pass rush spent most of their time getting pushed around behind the QB.

Rivers had all the time in the world, and completely open passing lanes, and competely easy stepping up into his throws ability. We rarely even touched him. The secondary was completely hung out to dry by the “pass rush” in the SD game. The secondary didn’t do too much to help either, but it was primarily the pass rush that was the issue.
