Tony Romo December 2009

Tony Romo December 2009, three games so far;

41 of 55 (74.5%) for 392 yards at a 7.1 average, 3 Td's, 0 Int's. QB Rating; 112.1

19 of 30 (63.3%) for 249 yards at a 8.3 average, 2 Td's, 0 Int's. QB Rating; 111.7

22 of 34 (64.7%) for 312 yards at a 9.2 average, 1 Td, 0 Int's. QB Rating; 104.0

Star-divide

All against legitimate teams, two of which were on the road. If he keeps this up it would have to be one of the greatest Decembers in Cowboys history wouldn't it?

For good measure his last game of November was also rated over 100 (121.2) making it 4 straight games. Over those 4 games he has no interceptions and no fumbles. In fact he hasn't been picked off in his last 156 attempts. For all of us who've been watching Romo develop these last few years just let that sink in. Not one turnover in 4 straight games.

Also, in the 12 games since the disaster in week 2 Romo has thrown 422 passes. Of those 422 passes, 4 have been picked off. Only 4 picks in 12 games!! That's Aikman at his finest stuff there.

I think it's become obviously apparent that Tony Romo has taken that next step in his progression and moved from a very good QB into being an elite QB.

If you look around the league,

Romo has been an elite QB since the 2007 if you consider pur QB stats, including the W & L columns.

One would hope that his level of play pays off and the rest of the team steps up their game as well.

But I agree, he has been outstanding the last three games.

Nice ...

was gonna post something similar!

Its funny, but a couple of weeks ago, during the Giants game, the first text I got from a fellow Cowboys fan was “Romo sucks!” … I asked him, “Are you watching the same game as I am?”

Romo has matured from a “boy” into a “man” .. a good QB, All-Star QB .. into an elite QB …. a Champion! ….

Its great to see because not many athletes have endored more unjust critism than he, and nothing would be greater to see him holding that Lombardi in February!

I think ..

yesterday we saw a transformation from Wade’s team to Tony’s team!

Tony has carried this team the last three weeks

I know we lost the first two, but he was playing like an MVP in those first two games as well and there was just always some huge letdown (the Hixon return and the final Chargers drive that NEVER ended seemingly).

Romo was ASTOUNDING in the clutch yesterday night. He evaded rushers well, didn’t make bad throws (actually, that near-pick into triple coverage was a bad one, but other than that, I don’t remember any), and RAN the ball well. How about that muffed Marion handoff? In years past, I think we probably fumble or something there. But Tony made a huge heads-up play to save a possible turnover and turn it into a significant gain.

Great player. Great game.

You guys are still 1-2 in December, but...

Romo has been FANTASTIC…

and you are the only ones who’ve been able to beat the Saints, even though Folk wanted to give Brees one more chance.

If I were a Cowboy fan…

I’d feel GREAT about Romo, but I’d be worried if we went into the postseason without a kicker. Folk has been a nightmare recently.

Yeah, too bad NO couldn't get bailed out by another chip shot miss late in a game.

It’s not like the Saints aren’t two plays from being 0-3 in December themselves.

Fair enough, but there's no reason to wander in here throwing out back-handed compliments and pointing out flaws.

Why not?

I didn’t wander, I’m here regularly enough.

I’m an Eagles fan, but I’m fairly well versed in the NFC East.

My compliments aren’t back-handed, they’re legitimate. Flaws are legitimate too. No team is perfect, that’s why we have discussion, my Eagles are on a 5-game win streak, but I’ll be the first to note they are far from without flaws. You guys are criticized for folding late in the season, that’s a legitimate argument, all I’m saying is that one win (even though it was very impressive with the exception of Folk) doesn’t exonerate 12 consecutive seasons of a losing Dec/Jan record. I’m also noting that, different from seasons past, is that your QB is NOT the problem…he’s been playing great.

Eagles fan?

For some reason, that doesn’t bother me nearly as much as thinking you’re a Saints fan. I just glanced at your post and Reggie Bush’s name in your sig and made the connection.

(Obligatory NFC East fist-bump)

As for the December thing, the words “past performance is not indicative of future results” comes to mind, To put it another way, does the fact that Philly has never won a Super Bowl mean that they never will? I doubt you believe that, and neither do I.

Twelve years of whatever is pretty meaningless as well, considering that in most of those years, Dallas simply wasn’t a very good team, and didn’t have a very good record in any months, much less December. It’s like those articles people write before every Dallas-Philly game, where they say that Andy Reid owns the Cowboys, while never bothering to mention that most of that damage was done while the Eagles simply had an overwhelming talent advantage over the Cowboys, never taking into account that the series is pretty much fifty-fifty since Parcells showed up and started the rebuilding process. (I think it’s 6-7 in Philly’s favor).

Two years ago, Dallas was 2-1 in December, going into Washington for the last game of the season with everything they could possibly clinch already sown up, facing a team playing for it’s life and the reputation of Joe Gibbs, who they might have ended up playing in the playoffs even if they beat them, so they sat a bunch of players and essentially treated it like an exhibition game. Does losing that mean that they “can’t” win late in the season? Or does it simply show that history is written after the fact?

you're absolutely right

history means NOTHING…teams evolve, even in a single season. Both of our teams will be very different in our second meeting than we were in the first. I never bought the “Dallas can’t win in December” line, but it is a legitimate criticism until you prove it wrong.

Of course I don’t buy the “Eagles can’t win the Superbowl” line either, but I admit that it is a fair criticism until we do. Admittedly, a 1-4 record in the NFC Championship game is pretty bad regardless of how awesome it was that we got there so many times.

Romo using his legs last night

was huge. That was the something extra to help overcome Roy’s drop, Folk’s choke and Flozell’s lack of speed.

Both our december losses could have gone either way and the little things Romo did last night made the difference.

Most impressive Romo stat

is the all important TD/Int ratio. Honestly, I was willing to live with 2-1 which is what it was during his breakout ‘07 season with 36 scores. Now he’s closing in on 4-1. Pretty remarkable.

I think I read somewhere recently that

Romo now has the same career int % as Aikman. And frankly, Aikman was much safer with his pass selection. I seem to remember a big segment of his attempts were 3-4 yard dumpoffs to Emmitt and Johnston. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

by DavidH22 on Dec 20, 2009 11:31 AM CST reply actions

Here are the stats

INT %

Romo: 3.0
Aikman: 3.0
Staubach: 3.7

TD/INT ratio

Romo 103-53
Aikman 165-141
Staubach 153-109

Lofty company.

Even crazier....

Is the thought that Romo will likely pass Aikman’s team TD in the next two seasons…

Wow.

Whats funny is that most of the "color guys" on ESPN

like to talk about the “bad” Romo but, every great QB has a horrible game every now and then. I mean look at Kurt Warner having like 7 turnovers last week and those guys stay up his butt talking about how great he is. Also Brett Favre considered to be top 10 all time has a history of turnovers so I think the ESPN commentators get wood from down talking Romo.
I think it was funny that those same guys that were bad mouthing Romo before did an about face and last night they were kissing his ass….!!!!

by UTexan on Dec 20, 2009 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

I think this Romo is different than last years Romo

Frankly, there was a legitimate “bad Romo” who made it difficult for this team to win som games in he last 3 years. Hes changed that.

I’ve said it througout this year – with a more mature qb and a solid defense, this team has the potential to make some noise.

Watching the game I noticed Tony yelling alot and letting people know when they f-up. I like that he’s taking control and being a leader. I also saw a bunch of smiles on his face which is Tony bein Tony.

Totally Agree

It was nice to see him chew out Barber for screwing up that one run play and to see him grinning from ear to ear when he almost threw a pick under pressure
