Wierd Likely Playoff Scenario

There is a good chance the Cowboys could end up playing the Eagles or either the 2nd seed in the playoffs or being out of the playoffs (if they lose).  How?

Giants win out (includes win vs Minn in week 17).

Packers win out (includes win over AZ in week 17).

Cowboys beat Washington next week and Minn loses to the Bears.

If the Cowboys beat the Eagles in week 17, they get the number 2 seed in the playoffs and a first round bye.  If they lose, they miss the playoffs.

Wait a second

you might be on to something. Interesting. But it would only work if the Vikes have the tiebreaker over the Pack? Because if the Pack win their division they have tie breaker over us.

by TroyHambrick on Dec 21, 2009 1:28 AM CST up reply actions

Which they do

The Eagles lost to the Saints (who we beat), they lost to the Raiders (who we beat) and they lost to us (who we are).

Another wierd scenario:

The Cowboys could play the Eagles in the wildcard round, while the Cards could well play the Pac. That would mean that both games were the same matchup as the final week of the regular season.

The Eagles lost to the Saints (who we beat), they lost to the Raiders (who we beat) and they lost to us (who we are).

by aussie_cowboy on Dec 21, 2009 1:41 AM CST reply actions

Yeah i was thinking about that today

and if we beat the Eagles in Week 17 we’ll get the 3rd seed and play the same game in the playoffs. Weird indeed

Is this a mocking repeat of the mispelt "wierd"

It’s weird that you all chose to spell this incorrectly.

by Dansonofdirm on Dec 21, 2009 2:27 AM CST up reply actions

The syntactical enforcer concurs

it’s weird to see weird spelled ‘wierd’.

by One.Cool.Customer on Dec 21, 2009 3:47 AM CST up reply actions

No Haha

I was thinking is it “ie” or “ei”, looked at the title and decided it must be “ie”, wasn’t really concentrating.

The Eagles lost to the Saints (who we beat), they lost to the Raiders (who we beat) and they lost to us (who we are).

by aussie_cowboy on Dec 21, 2009 3:48 AM CST up reply actions

I saw that today

it would be strange that both wildcard nfc games will be like that

by nicholas.rodriguez on Dec 21, 2009 2:49 AM CST up reply actions

we wouldn't necessarily

get the third sede. Other things would have to happen.

Either way though, they are the last team I won’t to face in the playoffs… especially if we beat them in the final game. Its just to hard to beat a team three times in a season. It will be like 2007 and the Giants all over again.

by TroyHambrick on Dec 21, 2009 1:54 AM CST reply actions

If we beat Wash

and Philly wins the next game, we are 1 game behind them, so if we beat them as well, we win the division since we would end w/ the same record but we would own the tie breaker… basically if we win next week, the Philly game is for the division

by nicholas.rodriguez on Dec 21, 2009 2:50 AM CST up reply actions

I know

But that does not mean we are the third cede. We could very well be the fourth cede.

by TroyHambrick on Dec 21, 2009 5:51 AM CST up reply actions

As long as we don't "cede" a playoff spot

lol

Just get in, please! And I didn’t like this post-now I’ll have nightmares.

Go Wash. tonight!

by Realist Larry on Dec 21, 2009 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

I honestly think one of either Washington or Minnesota will beat NY

Minnesota’s fighting to keep their first round bye, so they won’t be resting anybody at that point. Washington’s a tough football team, and they’ve got nothing to lose. Really frightening stuff. NY could potentially lose both.

Epic Fail since 1985

by the red scare on Dec 21, 2009 6:59 AM CST reply actions

If dallas wins out, Philthy has already clinched and it then comes down to either NY or GB taking the last spot.

Based on their schedules they will both win out then they will be forced to go through tie-breakers to determine who takes the last spot. The bad situation is if they both win out and dallas does not is that dallas will be out completely. Dallas has to win out and take the division because the chances that the peckers and gints lose two games is very unlikely.

Wow

I just used the playoff generator on Yahoo. It actually works.

Could it actually happen? :D

2009 Dallas Cowboys: 10-6
2009 New York Jets: not 11-5 :(
2009-2010 Dallas Mavericks: 57-25

by Grady90 on Dec 21, 2009 8:17 AM CST reply actions

Or rather...

Might it actually happen? :D

2009 Dallas Cowboys: 10-6
2009 New York Jets: not 11-5 :(

by Grady90 on Dec 21, 2009 8:18 AM CST up reply actions

That Generator is neat

I played through a couple of scenarios, two things surprised me.

1. In almost all halfway realistic scenarios, we meet the Eagles in the playoffs.

2. There is still a chance that all three NFC East teams make the playoffs: The Giants win their remaining three, Cowboys their remaining two, Eagles win against Denver but lose to the Cowboys, and crucially, the Packers win against Seattle, but lose their last game in Arizona.

I DO NOT want to play you guys 2 weeks in a row

I get SO anxious every time we play, knowing that the outcome can go either way at any moment! To have to deal with that 2 weeks in a row would make me a miserable person!

Same here

It would also detract from the week 17 clash, I doubt the coaching staffs would through everything against the other.

So I had to establish the rules and regulations of the game...85!

by aussie_cowboy on Dec 21, 2009 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

True

Once Week 17 rolls around and it’s looking like it’ll be Eags-Boys in Rd 1 regardles of the outcome, then I think we’ll see a lot of vanilla game plans. The coaches will be afraid to show all of their cards. I think Eagles and Cowboys fans can all agree that we don’t want to see each other two weeks in a row.

The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have a running back and a wide receiver with 500 yards apiece in the same season before their 22nd birthdays.

by Smitty2K3 on Dec 21, 2009 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, we can all agree on that

however, week 17 wouldn’t be for nothing since the winner would get the division and get the wildcard game at home. That might not matter though, you guys already beat us in Philly, and of course I don’t expect you to sweep us:)

If the game was for a first roud bye though

that would make things very interesting.

by aussie_cowboy on Dec 21, 2009 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

both of us would need a lot of help from the Vikings

I don’t see them losing out, but here’s how it would have to look.

For you guys to get a 1st round bye, you have to win out, and the VIkings lose out.

For us to get a 1st round bye, we have to get one more win than Vikings, if they go 0-2, we can go 1-1, if they go 1-1, we need to go 2-0

We ALSO need you guys to EITHER lose to Washington (while we beat Denver), or we need to beat you regardless of what happens with Denver.

Basically, if the Vikings lose out, all we have to do is beat you guys week 17 for a 1st round bye, we could mathematically afford to lose to Denver (though I don’t see the Vikings losing the next two anyway)

Gonna be an interesting end to the season....

everyone’s gonna have to earn it if they get in (unlike last year..*cough, Eagles..)

Well…as long as the Giants win at least 2 of the next 3.

haha

we didn’t earn it at all…

all we did was tie the Bengals so we could beat the 9-7 teams to the tie breaker

I want the Cardinals to win out...

they’ll finish in the third spot. I want Dallas to finish in the six spot so we’ll end up with the Cards in the wildcard round. But, i want the Cowboys to win the rest of their games…Oh I don’t know what i want!

by TheCowboyFan on Dec 21, 2009 9:56 AM CST reply actions

The easiest way I like to think about us making the playoffs...

Is that our magic number w/ the Giants—with their 3 games left and our 2—is two. So if we win our last two, or if they lose tonight and then we beat the Skins, we’re in.

Division is another matter, but we’d be in.

by U2boy417 on Dec 21, 2009 1:24 PM CST reply actions

wow

somehow that does work. Despite us not having the tiebraker over GB – since Minny owns that tiebraker and would win their division.

Thats kinda shocking. Its not impossible. The vikings being upset last week is gona make this a crazy two weeks.

by foyesboys on Dec 21, 2009 2:09 PM CST reply actions

also

I’m sure people have already brought this up…..but it looks like the vikings AND eagles have something to play for week 17 (unless philly loses to denver). Philly, Minnesota, NY, us, those 4 spots and their seeds will be decided the last week.

If Minnesota loses to chicago, and the giants beat the vikings week 17, we’ll be stuck in this ridiculous situation

1. Beat Philly. Get the first round bye.
2. Lose to PHilly. Miss the playoffs.

THAT is crazy.

by foyesboys on Dec 21, 2009 2:12 PM CST reply actions

yeah its wild but

I’m with most of you, I dislike the fact that if we make the playoffs theres like 90% chance we will be playing the eagles. I used the playoff simulator and almost all the scenarios are that way. I noticed that if the packers loose to seattle then beat az it could end up dallas plays them instead of philly. Seattle winning in gb right now is about as likely as the bucs beating the saints next week.

One thing I hate hearing is “its hard to beat a team 3 times” The steelers did it last year to the ravnes. Its harder to beat a team twice in back to back weeks, especially a division rival.

4 times in a row… but I get your point.

I'm fine with GB or Philly

I’d probably prefer Philly. I think we match up ok with them.

by foyesboys on Dec 22, 2009 12:57 AM CST up reply actions

I dont think we match well at all

They blitz often, and we have troubles with that. Their QB can extend plays (allowing time for our coverage to break down), they have a money TE that can work our ILBs and DeSean is a fast little cookie that gives us problems. I hate the Eagles. I would much rather another shot at the Pack.
