I find it incredibly ironic...

That the kicker that will supposedly solve our kicking woes is a guy who was cut four years ago by the Cowboys for missing kicks.

The big point in all this though is this: it’s not like Suisham can do any worse than Folk. And I really, really feel bad for him and I hope he comes back with his head on straight next season.

The other ironic part is...

Suisham got released from the Skins for missing the exact same kick (24 yards) against the exact same team (Saints).

by Road Warrior on Dec 21, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

seriously lol

there’s a remarkable symmetry to this… not one that’s terribly confidence building for us fans, but definitely good for the irony

WHOO

Hey at least when he missed against the saints he kicked it straight, only prob was he was lined up on the hashmark haha.

I think hes the best option out there. Elam was awfull and they really must not think Beuhler can do a better job than these free agents.

Maybe Sushiam was pulling for Dallas all along. check it out, he was perfect on the season untill he played his former team. Then when the redskins fans thought they had a signature win he screwed them over! What a guy, faithfull to jerry all these years later

I don't understand this sentiment of bringing him back

Why? He’s lost it, and no other team is going to give him a chance to get it back. But you would like the Cowboys to give him another shot in a regular season situation when every game counts? No chance.

He's shown in the past he's got talent

That’s one.

Because we’re starting all over again next year, that’s two.

Three, because it might be physical from the surgery last year, and he came back early. Time + therapy may make him as good as new next summer.

Theres a good chance they could sign him in the offseason if they think he can rebound.

Well he cost them 2 consecutive games.

Besides the 50 yarder, he missed a 30-40 against the Cowboys and lost 7-6.

This moves shows how CLUELESS WP and JJ can be...

The FG kicker on your own roster has become a liability. So what do you do? You go out and sign a kicker who just missed a game winning kick against the Saints the week before. Such idiocy. This also shows WHY WP is in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM HEAD COACHING MATERIAL. Never has been and never will be.

Unbelievable.

Please, explain the following:

a) Who would have been the best option in your opinion? And don’t come to me with the name of a FG kicker on another team with a high pct, those guy aren’t available…

b) Why is this a clueless move?

I’ll explain my reasoning:

Out of the street FAs who has an accuracy comparable to 18/21 in 2009? No one? That’s your answer.

Am I glad that this is the direction the team is moving on? No, I would be throwing human sacrifices to the Football Gods if they restore Folk to his pre-2009 condition…

Suisham is the best option right now.

by Chandus on Dec 21, 2009 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

Okay...so YOU think you want to sign a kicker who has MISSED a game winning FG ....

and by bringing in that kicker, you want to have faith in that SAME kicker who lost a game to help you WIN a game at the end? I’m sorry but that’s incompetent thinking.

OTOH….if Suisham comes in and proves that he IS reliable and CONSISTENT, I will be the first to thank him!

I DEFY you to look at WP's record where he has been head coach and then come back and tell me you still want him.

I do not hate WP. I simply think he is a poor choice for a coach. He may be a decent defensive coach but I just don’t think he offers anything as a head coach. His coaching decsions and his judgement are what I base my comments on and taken as a WHOLE, remember 13-3 and the Giants debacle? We were ALL calling for his head and rightly so.

by thejanusman on Dec 21, 2009 5:55 PM CST reply actions

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t most analyst have Mason Crosby graded higher than what the folk. And JJ and his crack scouts over thought and reached for Folk.

Just like they went with Felix Jones over 2k rusher Chris Johnson and they passed on Desean Jackson and paid a kings ransom for Roy Williams. Not to mention has Martellus really been an upgrade over Fasano.

Some teams win because of their front office this team wins sometimes in spite of it’s front office.

by Este on Dec 21, 2009 5:58 PM CST reply actions

Ridiculous

Firstly, JJ took FJ over Chris Johnson because he was rated higher on the team draft board. Even the Titans admitted that they would have prefered Felix. But then again you would be a great hindsight GM wouldn’t you.

Secondly, Crosby is struggling just as bad as Folk, just go over to their site, many posters were calling for him to be cut.

Felix made have been rated higher but it wasn’t cut and dry I can recall many on Raf’s old blog making valid arguments for drafting CJ over FJ. Mostly durability and being more of an every down back was the issue.

and you want Folk to be the guy

by I_miss_Switzer on Dec 22, 2009 8:27 AM CST up reply actions

what would be satisfactory, then?

who would you nominate for the position that would be a better guy? Anyone still available that has done better than 18-21 for the year this year?

What's his percentage this season?

What’s that? He’s retired? How is that an upgrade, Terry?

I don’t get your reasoning on this one.

he was a good clutch kicker

and who said he’s officially retired, just not employed as an NFL kicker at this moment.

has he been training

or is he covered in rust?

I am sure you will tell me it doesnt’ matter. you know he would be better no matter what.

That is lots of faith in a guy who went 6/10 last year, playing for a dome team, got cut and has had no work since.

Hey, when I said that a while back, you said it did not make any sense

how many times has folk completely deflated the Cowboys?

It's not that I'm saying we're due a playoff win, but I didn't have my license to drive when we won our last one...

Glad to make a change...

I love Nick Folk for those kicks against Buffalo, but ten misses is absolutely inexcusable. A change had to be made. And yes, I think Suisham represents an upgrade. The kicks he missed against Dallas were of a decent distance and while that Saints miss was terrible, he hit all his other FGs this year. That is not something that Nick Folk can remotely claim. Plus, I assume he kicked well enough in his workout for Dallas to conclude that he is currently an upgrade over Folk and his godawful kicks in practice. Like I said, I really like Folk as a person, but it is time to move on.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

in the warmup

Folk was hitting cold shank after cold shank from a tee – hopeless.

Let’s not forget his little whinefest about needing a new holder. He wasn’t exactly taking it on his shoulders. We don’t need finger pointers, especially from our kicker.

I guess

you’ll always have Buffalo, Nick. I still go back and watch that game. Has any rookie kicker ever been so clutch as that moment? Sad that we’ve reached this point with him.

in defense of folk

When they showed the misses during pregame…who knows if he made 100 of em and missed those 4? I really don’t know since I watched the game at a bar and couldn’t hear anything.

But this is the right move for sure. It hurts, and if we didn’t have Beuhler, we could carry two kickers. I assume they aren’t allowed to stow away Folk on IR, and that they couldn’t put McGee on the practice squad, etc. Cutting Suisham was a knee jerk move on WASH’s part…

you may be right on the 4/100

but those weren’t just misses. They were like nothing I have ever seen before.

Suisham's 23 yard miss

is his ONLY miss less than 30 yards out of 107 field goal attempts – and he got fired because of it

Posters agree with the 'Boys choice

Free agent options laid out here:

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2009/12/20/1209441/which-free-agent-kicker

Suisham was the #1 choice (28%)
Second was keep Folk (17%) – so we have a lot of loyal posters
Third was Elam (16%) – but apparently the Cowboys didn’t consider him “due to injury concerns”

A real shame that Adam Vinatieri got injured – as otherwise Matt Stover would have been available and in my view a perfect choice. Vinatieri is suppossed to be out 4-8 weeks and its been 8…. If he comes back, Stover is likely cut and a good pickup if Suisham bombs at the Skins. Given Vinatieri would have been out for a while, Indy may hold them both for a little while for insurance for their playoff run. Also note Stover has only been kicking XP’s for the last 2 weeks…
