ideal offseason

this may be a long shot, but its ideal

Coaching- wade moves to defensive coordinator, jim harbraugh is our head coach- everybody wants shanahan or holgrem, but i want to go young and jim harbraugh looks like our best option. It might be unlikely that wade would accept the defensive coordinator role but again, this is an ideal offseason.

Draft-

1st- Trent Williams OT oklahoma

2nd- Nate Allen FS south florida

3rd- Jordan Shipley WR/KR texas

after that we go oline/dbacks but eventually get a kicker, possibly Leigh Tiffin out of alabama

Our Free Agents- we really only have 2 big free agents this year, austin(RFA) and spears(UFA) sign austin to a 3-4 year deal, let spears go. other free agents, watkins, sensabaugh, ball, hurd, kitna, proctor, mcquistan, bowen, hatcher, siavii.

Free Agency- one guy i would love to have is vikings DE Ray Edwards, i'm sure that the vikings will try to keep him but if not he would be a great replacement for spears. Another way to go is sign Vince Wilfork patriots DT and move Ratliff to DE, Edwards will probably be cheaper and i think will be a better fit here. Also there are so many good safeties out there this year, Antoine Bethea (colts), Nick Collins (packers), OJ Atogwe (rams), but i doubt any of there teams will let them go, so we might have to look deeper, Darren Sharper is also out there and the saints are not necessarily looking to resign him. He is 34 and will want a lot of money because he is having a pro bowl type year this year. But i would love to have him for a 1-2 years, then while Nate Allen (above) or any other safety we draft in the draft develops. Sharper would be the play maker we've been looking for, i think he would be worth the price. Our last option would be to bring back Sensebaugh and/or Watkins. With Kitna possibly leaving we will also need a QB, our options are Tavaris Jackson, Troy Smith (former heisman winner), Kellen Clemons among others. I would personally like to bring in Matt Moore as our backup if Carolina doesn't bring him back, he's done a decent job as the panthers starter this year. Possibly in a couple years, Stephen McGee can become a solid backup. And last but not least, we need to bring in a kicker to at least compete with Leigh TIffin or any other kicker we draft. Neil Rackers would be my first choice.

what do you think?

If Ware decides to leave or is let go

Garret takes over the HC role, and I’d like to see Joe. D as the DC – he is getting a lot of respect from the players and seems to be the one guy that gets this team fired up.

I want Joe D if not Wade too

not that I’m loving Wade but if he is gone I would rather have Joe D than Garrett or a college coach

i love joe d too but if wade agrees to move to the dc, that is where he belongs, he is a defensive coordinantor not a coach. but if wade doesnt want to i agree joe d to dc. But im really not sure i trust garret as our oc let alone our head coach, i would much rather see harbough or stoops as our hc

No

The ideal off season is polishing the Lombardi that they won in Miami.

Shipley

won’t be there in the 3rd. Also, I don’t think we will take an offensive lineman in the 1st. Probably the 2nd.

Can see Williams falling to us

Shipley either for that matter.

Trent Williams isn't very good

I think he’ll end up at RT somewhere.

We are in the hunt for the playoffs

In position to win the east. Coming off a big win. Could get some momentum rolling to take us into the playoffs if we can get another win this week.

And you want to talk about the off-season? Talk about demoting the head coach? If we had lost to the Saints, this post might make sense. But, in case you missed it, the Cowboys won that game Saturday night. The focus is on this season right now, not some off-season dreaming. And to even talk about draft prospects is crazy at this point. It might be feasible to talk about positions of need, but to talk about specific players right now is a stretch.

Get focused on where we are. Don’t fast forward to the offseason until the hope for the current season is over. For all you know, we’ll have the 32nd pick in round 1 and drafting there would be totally different than drafting in the 20-25 range, don’t you think?

by Kansas Cowboy on Dec 21, 2009 7:41 PM CST reply actions

Not at all

but before focusing on an offseason and preparation for next year, let’s see how this one ends.
Teams like the Chiefs, Raiders, Redskins, Browns, Seahawks, Bears, 49ers, Bucs, Panthers, Lions, Falcons, and Rams should be talking about offseasons right now. Perhaps some of those 7-7 teams in the AFC that are all but mathematically eliminated could start doing so as well, but we are in the thick of the playoff race…in fact we own our own destiny.
My point is that because we won Saturday night, we’re still in it. If we had lost it might make sense to start talking offseason.

new coach

if a new head coach is hired, i hope it isn’t dependent on the 3-4 defense. i think a 4-3 front of ware and spencer at end with ratliff and maybe terence cody (2nd round pick) at tackles would allow 3rd round pick of this year jason williams to get on the field and add much needed speed to the linebacking corps.

I agree, but...

…it may be easier to find a good defensive coordinator in the 4-3 system than in the 3-4 system.

by rhbgsherb on Dec 22, 2009 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

Totally agree on that!

You put your players in the best positions to win.

I know you aren’t a big Vince Young fan, but Tennessee has done a great job of creating their offense around VY’s skill set.

I gotta tell you...

I absolutely dislike hearing about Wade possibly moving to DC. Not only will it not happen, but the whole idea would represent an organizational move that would make the Cowboys seem extremely dysfunctional much like the play-calling situation in Washington. Plus, it would almost certainly have some ramifications in the locker room as the new order of command would take a lot of adjusting too.

Ray Edwards is 268 pounds...

There is no way he remotely fits the 3-4 DE role.

by Cowboyfan729 on Dec 21, 2009 9:24 PM CST reply actions

Yeah

He’s a good 4-3 DE, but too small for a 3-4 DE.

by Joon on Dec 22, 2009 5:12 AM CST up reply actions

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING...

I’d like to see Jay move to DE though but we’d most definately need Vince Wilfork to step in his place. I’d be comfortable with us drafting a big Vince Wilfork type with a lot of potential to start. Then we could eventually slide Jay to DE and we’d have rotation with big play makers on the d-line. I think we absolutely need some more o-linemen in the draft!!! Maybe a WR if Jesse Holley doesn’t fit us…

Garrett would be the next head coach...

…if this season ends poorly and he’s already said in the past that he would want to bring both a new OC and DC.

Plenty of options out there besides the big name retreads and I certainly have no interest in someone from the NCAA. The last time a college guy did well in jumping straight to the pros was 1994 when Switzer inherited the team of the decade

interesting post

I’m not a fan of getting a college coach at all. The rumors about Stoops scare the hell out of me. But….I have to say that Harbaugh intrigues me. In my mind he’s different. He hasn’t spent a decade as the head coach in college. I think he’s just there to get experience before he goes to the pros. Plus, with his brother in Baltimore, he’s got a close resourse on the difference between college and the pros.

I also wonder about Joe D being HC. He’s obviously Wades right-hand man. He’s much more fiery and it sounds like he’s a stickler for details. The players respect him and John Harbough has proven that a special teams coach can be a good head coach.

Look, I don’t think this is actually happening. I think garrett gets first crack at it. And frankly I think he deserves it. He’s a smart guy who is still on his learning curve a bit. I think he’d work well with Jerry and he’d show more command than Wade does.

I deal with people in leadership positions everyday. Some people have command presence and some don’t. In my mind, garrett and harbaugh have it and wade doesn’t. That’s not always a prime indicator of success. I don’t think Norv Turner has command presence, but I’d say he’s been successful in San Diego. Singletary has enough for 3 head coaches, but that hasn’t really helped the 49ers. But I’d rather take my chances with a guy that takes charge just by walking in the room then the guy that no one knows is in charge until someone tells you he is.

We’re not getting Holmgren, Shanahan, or Gruden for sure (and since no one has ever won a super bowl with 2 franchises, I don’t know why we’d want them). It’s time to get the big name guys out of heads and look elsewhere.

by rhbgsherb on Dec 22, 2009 1:08 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Regarding Norv...

I think he’s developed that command presence he used to lack with the Chargers.

You might be right.

He seems like he shows a lot more emotion than he did with Washington. I don’t think he should be killed for not being successful with the Raiders. That job is impossible.

Love the idea of Jim Harbaugh

Stud coach, great leader, got tons more out of a crappy roster than anyone else in the FBS.

He also was a success as a QB in the NFL.

He was a try-hard guy that got the most out of his talents. I like those sort of guys as coaches. Dungy and Cowher were the same type of guys as players and obviously successful coaches. But I’m not quite ready to kick Wade to the curb just yet until we see how the season shakes out.

I think he'd be a welcome change for Romo

I don’t know that the combo of Garrett and Wilson have done all that much to accelerate Tony’s grasp of the game.

We could go young or we could select either of New England’s former DCs – Crennel or Mangini.
