Must beat eagles 3 times, tall order....

Without GB dropping two straight (unlikely) the cowboys will absolutely face the eagles in the 1st round of the playoffs.  If the cowboys take care of business against the redskins, and they beat the ealges at home the following week, they must turn right around and beat them again the next week in the first round of the playoffs in order to fullfill Jones' demand of a division title and a playoff victory.  This is a scary senerio for me.  Remember having to beat the giants 3 times in a row.  How'd that turn out?  Plus with back to back weeks, I feel Reid might outcoach Phillips.  I know this sounds crazy, but is it better to lose and go to Philly the next week instead?  Not like we have a home field advantage anyway.  Our fans sit on their hands all game and never provide the support the team would like to have in the playoffs.  Please someone help me feel good about this likely senario.  Are the Cowboys good enough to beat the eagles in back to back weeks?  Any statistics about beating a team 3 times in a season or beating a team in back to back weeks (week 17 & wildcard round)?

I was doing the playoff simulator yeasturday and if the packers loose to the seahawks this week and then beat az theres a strong possibility dallas would play gb. Only thing that would change that is a tie or dallas loosing one of the last 2 and ny getting in

There are plenty of other playoff scenarios...

…that doesn’t pit the Cowboys and Eagles against each other in the first round. Root for the Bears to beat the Vikings this weekend for starters.

The Cowboys could still get a first round bye if they win out and the Vikings lose out, (plus the Cards have to drop one more as well). There’s even a scenario where the Cowboys host the Giants in the first round and I’d LOVE another shot at those guys.

Dallas has to win out because neither the Giants nor the Packers are going to falter from here. 10-6 will not get it done for Dallas this year.

That "cant beat them 3 times in one year" is BS

Pitt did it just last year to baltimore. I know it would take allot to do that but theres no way they should not go all out week 17. The home field is much more important than you think. Plus if they are to advance past the first round it keeps the possibility of getting another home game alive.

I agree

I would much rather be Dallas playing at home two straight times than Philladelphia having to travel to Dallas two straight times. The key to the entire playoffs is to win the NFC East. Notwithstanding the success teams have had recently, being a road Wild Card is a tough draw. This scenario could play out: the Dallas/Philly game gets flexed to Sunday night and then the two teams might meet again in Dallas the following Saturday. That would make for a short, travel-filled week for the Eagles, which would play nicely into Dallas’ hands.

Philly could have to travel to Dallas two straight weeks and Green bay may have to travel to Arizona two straight weeks.

definitely

i can’t stand the thought of playing at Philly in the playoffs. I’d much rather take our chances playing at home under perfect field conditions. You never know what Philly’s field will be like in January, but we know what Cowboys Stadium’s field conditions will be.

Wow, what a game Saturday night! I’m still on such a high. Can’t help it; I’m back emotionally tied to this team in December despite the 1-2 record. Should be fun the rest of the way.

by JimmyK on Dec 22, 2009 9:51 AM CST reply actions

I believe the Cowboys match up well against the Eagles

McNabb likes to go deep which is good for the Cowboys because:
1)With a slow developing play, that gives Rat, Ware, and Spencer more time to bring pressure on the QB
2) The weakness in the Cowboys defense has been coverage by the linebackers in the middle of the field but McNabb likes to go to his receivers down the sidelines which works in the Cowboys favor because they have good cornerbacks. Plus the Cowboys shut down the Eagles passing game last time.

by DatNguyenNguyenScenario on Dec 22, 2009 9:52 AM CST reply actions

And Austin had one catch

it happened to go for a TD, but it’s not like he was owning our secondary or anything.

Brent Celek’s not a bad option for McNabb in the middle of the field either…if I remember this season well enough, it seems as though Celek is having a pretty good year.

Sure, I'm not at all saying Celek is better

and I have no interest in just saying names back and forth…

NguyenScenario was saying how the Cowboys match-up well against the Eagles because we throw the ball to the outside where your D is strong, and we don’t throw the ball to the middle. Celek’s had a great year in the middle.

Witten is better than Celek, no one’s arguing that…Eagles are usually bad against TE’s, so I expect Witten to play well against us, that wasn’t my point at all.

Understood

but my point was that while our LBs do struggle to cover TEs, your performance against TE has been almost as bad. Both players may well have big games.

Dallas has contained top receivers this year

Steve Smith, Manningham and Vincent Jackson are the only receivers that have had 100 yard games against the Cowboys. The Cowboys secondary is actually pretty good at containing passing offenses, the issue is if the Cowboys can keep Romo from getting pressured. If Romo gets hit less than 10 times/game, the Cowboys should be able to win both games. If the offensive line (the weakest part of the Cowboys team) can play average, the Cowboys should be able to win the division.

by DatNguyenNguyenScenario on Dec 22, 2009 10:01 AM CST reply actions

100 yard games don't impress me

because we spread the ball around so much. Guys rarely get more than 5 or 6 catches, and DeSean only happens to get 100 yard games because he averages 20yds/catch.

A lot of teams have a big-time go-to receiver…that guy’s getting 7-10 grabs a game, and will put up 100 yard games…containing those guys is impressive, but we don’t really have anyone on our team catching the ball that often.

I'm just a fan, I can speculate

The only film the Cowboys are looking at this weeks is Redskins’ film. They don’t have time for anything else. The offensive and defensive gameplans Wade and the Redhead put together pertain ONLY to the Redskins.

That 44-6 game last year almost ruined my New year’s and I had to do a complete sports hiatus for a couple of days.

I agree that our teams are very evenly matched and every game could go either way. What I can’t figure out is why we have been able to beat the iggles this year but got swept by the giants. It would be sweet revenge to keep them out of the playoffs.

There is a chance these two could be playing each other...

…in week 17, simply to see who gets to host the following week. In that case both teams might hold something back (in terms of the playbook) that they’d rather save for the wild card round.

The likely possiblity of Eagles/Cowboys leaves a PIT IN MY STOMACH.

Based on the opponents of the other teams, i completely believe this senario will occur. I can’t stand having to face them again. After the heartbreak of 07, i will have a complete emotional breakdown if the cowboys lose in the playoffs after sweeping the eagles (just like the giants). If they win, it will feel like a relief, not like an overly joyous affair. It’s like, “there, finally we got a playoff victory”. If they lose, it’s like “I cannot believe it happened again”. I just hate getting my hopes up. This team has been such a tease over the past 3 years. I do think if the cowboys get past the monumental task of winning 3 straight (10, 11, WC), then they will feel like an elephant is off thier collective backs. I think they will be a “loosest” of the remaining playoff teams. The sky could be the limit. BUT 1st the DAMM EAGLES!

by Toughquestions on Dec 23, 2009 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

i dunno guys i just don't like that senario...

but it looks like it will lilkey happen. I have played around on yahoo generator, and most combinations of wins and loses pit us against the eagles, either home or away. I guess you just gotta believe if this team is up to the task, it’s up to the task. Unfortunately, our NFC East foes are always around come playoff time.

by Toughquestions on Dec 22, 2009 1:29 PM CST reply actions

it's a matter of seeding, and ALOT can happen

I don’t think either of us are getting a first round bye despite the math. The Vikings aren’t going to lose out.

With that said, one of us is likely going to be the 3 or 4 seed, and the other the 5 or 6…there are too many teams still in the hunt to list the scenarios that could play out here, but it’s just as likely that we’re playing Arizona or Green Bay as it is playing each other.

Reason why the East is always competitive

Big markets (NY, DC, PHL, DAL) have big pockets. More money to invest in top scouts, coaches, and top players in FA. Would anyone be willing to switch Dallas out and get them in the NFC West and have an easier path to get to the playoffs? I hate how tough it is for the Cowboys every single, stinking year, but the drama is great, ain’t it?

by DatNguyenNguyenScenario on Dec 22, 2009 1:35 PM CST reply actions

realignment

If memory serves, the last time the NFL went through realignment Jerry Jones (who was and is a very influential and powerful owner) absolutely insisted that Dallas remain in the NFC East both to protect the rivalries and also to make sure that the Dallas Cowboys continued to get maximum exposure in the huge eastern markets. From a pure geographic standpoint, it doesn’t make very much sense to group Dallas in the East….unless of course you view Dallas’ home territory as all of America!

Anyway, I’d be very much against moving out of the east. I was raised hating the Redskins and it would suck to not play them every year. Realignment will again raise it’s ugly head when a team moves to LA from somewhere far away. Then the NFL will have the same type of situation as when the Cardinals were in the NFC East.

by Cowboy.Louie on Dec 22, 2009 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

I was at the latest Eagles/Giants game

and a Giants fan (pissed after the loss) remarked that the NFC East isn’t even close to the toughest division…

At the time you guys hadn’t beaten the Saints, and he didn’t think that any of us could match up to ‘the good teams’

I had to reply that we’re DEFINITELY the toughest division BECAUSE we don’t have a 13-0, 11-1 team. We’re coming into week 16 and three teams could realistically tie in overall record at the top of the division…where else does that happen?

Agree

with a 31-25 W/L-Ratio, the NFC East is only one of two (AFC South, 35-21) divisions with a winning record. Our combined 177 scoring differential is better than any other division. No other division has a third ranked team with as many wins as the Giants.

Our Team should just worry about the Redskins and not all this talk.

Let the Eagles and their fans think they have it all in the bag. They are seriously acting as if the Bronco game is a W, when that game is big for both teams. If we play them with the playoffs at stake , then the better things will be. Beat the Redskins first and then we can talk all the other nonsense .

I actually expect the Packers to lose to the Cardinals in week 17

and put 3 teams from the East into the playoffs. We get the Giants at home in the wild card game and after beating them go to Arizona to punch a ticket to the NFC Championship. The Vikings would beat the Saints in the divisional round and we get to host the NFC Championship against the Vikings. Its possible but first we have to win the next 2.

Only partly

I get your point completely, and in certain circumstances, I agree. If you won because your game-plan was better or your personnel packages were better, than the chances of you repeating a victory are good. I would expect you to beat the Raiders every time (can’t say that for my Eagles though:)…HOWEVER,

If the win was the result of chance, or a play that could have gone either way, or if the teams are just really evenly matched, then it becomes much tougher to predict.

I see our games in that second category. Anything can happen, one play here, one play there…(If Donovan had gotten the 1st down on that sneak where some refs have admitted they would have given it to him etc…) anything can happen. It doesn’t take away from your win at all, you earned it, but I think your win was a matter of having the higher score when the clock wound down. I don’t think you out coached us, and I think the talent on each of our rosters is pretty evenly matched.
