Cowboys @ Redskins Injury Update

Fortunately, the Cowboys will have TE Martellus Bennett back because Deon Anderson has been out this week with strep throat. Bennett's presence allows the team to use John Phillips at fullback.

Tight end Martellus Bennett (concussion), safety Ken Hamlin (ankle), cornerback Terence Newman (knee), safety Gerald Sensabaugh (thumb) and linebacker DeMarcus Ware (wrist/neck) took part in a full practice.

Make the jump for the rest of the injury report.

Star-divide

RT Marc Colombo and SS Pat Watkins must be super fast healers. It's possible both could be available for the Week 17 game vs. Philly.

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips hasn't ruled out starting right tackle Marc Colombo (ankle/leg) or safety Pat Watkins (knee) for the Jan. 3 finale against the Eagles.

"It's going to be close," Phillips said.

Here's how the Redskins' injury report shapes up:

Devin Thomas, WR - No Practice (Ankle)

Andre Carter, DE - Limited Practice (Biceps)

Cornelius Griffin, DT - Limited Practice (Shoulder)

Anthony Montgomery, DT - Limited Practice (Hip)

Stephon Heyer, OT - Full Practice (Knee)

DeAngelo Hall, CB - Full Practice (Knee)

QB Jason Campbell has a left shoulder stinger but will start.

Enough of this injury stuff. Time to get down to serious business. The Cowboys and Redskins are bitter rivals; yet, the question remains: Which team has the hotter cheerleaders?

Pro Bowl voting has come to an end for the fans. DeMarcus Ware received the most votes for OLBs, which is great. The other Cowboys didn't fare too well, though. Here's how they finished.

Sam Hurd finished second at the special teams position with 132,137 votes.

Miles Austin finished third at wide receiver with 454,616 votes. Fullback Deon Anderson (91,472) also finished third at his spot.

Tight end Jason Witten (334,105), center Andre Gurode (206,802), left tackle Flozell Adams (180,818) and punter Mat McBriar (118,945) finished fourth in at their respective positions.

Strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh (91,268), free safety Ken Hamlin (64,476) and inside linebacker Keith Brooking (105,269) finished fifth at their respective positions.

The players and coaches finish their voting this week. Teams will be announced on Tuesday.

I don't want our boys winning personal awards....

…………just team goals. Is it not better for the Eagles and Giants to win pro bowl apperarances? Strictly being selfish, they will command more money and make it harder to retain them in the future. Until the cap rules change anyways I guess. Am I wrong?

somebody tell

me why we would not trade Bennett in the off season?

Phillips can easily fill his role.

Take a 1 or 2 or Bennett he should not start over Phillips.

by oneforthethumb on Dec 23, 2009 11:05 PM CST reply actions

Bennett is better

that’s why.
He’s not even close to his full potential. He’s bigger, taller, stronger, faster, and quicker than Phillips. Phillips cannot easily add an explosive and dominating dimension to the TE position, and it’s so not close it’s not worth discussing.
Phillips is right now all he’ll ever be. Smart, effective and efficient.
In Jason Witten’s first two seasons he couldn’t get out of his own way. He held blockers, he missed blocks, he ran wrong routes. I suppose someone back then should’ve explained to you why Witten would not be traded in the off season.

I disagree about Phillips

I think it’s a stretch to say Phillips has peaked already as a rookie, I see a lot of Witten in him, he might end up being a lot better than you think.

Overreaction

Let’s see Phillips is a better blocker than both anderson and bennett.

Anderson’s time has decreased because of Phillips.

Phillip’s catch and run against the Saints was far better than any of Bennett’s receptions this year.

Come to think of it ; if bennett doesn’t drop the ball on third down against the Gmen we probably score that series

Everyone has potential. Bennett has done zero this year.

Give Phillips more snaps and let’s see what he can do!!

Overreaction was everyone on this blog killing anthony spencer after the raiders pre-season game and the first giants game.

Your basing this off of one big catch that Phillips has had this year.

where does the insanity end?

… I guess when people actually felt justified in wanting Romo’s head (you know who you are :) … then I shouldn’t be surprised that Bennett’s skills are also completely under-appreciated?

The simple facts are this: Bennett is going nowhere because sanity exists among the coaches and the front office. Thank God the fans don’t run the asylum :)

The average fan only notices receiving numbers

That’s why Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates are so highly regarded even though they couldn’t block a 170 pound CB. Witten is a top 3-4 receiving TE and one of the best blocking TE’s of all time. But when his numbers are down, people think he’s had a bad year.

by JimmyJohnson on Dec 23, 2009 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

Witten has 82 catches for 837 yards.

That matches up with any TE you care to name.

It’s not that they are overvaluing receiving numbers, they’re just dumb.

It just doesn't seem like Bennett has had his head in the game this year.

We know he can do more than he’s done. Yet he has dropped balls that hit him in the hands 8 inches in front of his face. I think Bennett is going to be the kind of guy that needs someone to get on him. Left to his own devices he’s too much of a kidder. But if he is motivated he can be extremely deadly.

Average fans only notice Fantasy football numbers

They are not overvaluing receiving numbers, they are overvaluing fantasy numbers.

Witten has be a huge disapointment to fantasy football owners. His blocking, third down conversions and drawing double coverage does not do them any good. Players like Visanthe Shiancoe with half the catches and yards are ranked higher in this warped little world view because he has 9 TD catches.

In all honesty...

…I could care less about Witten going to the pro bowl. Everyone who posts here knows his true value. The pro bowl is based purely on offensive stats. Granted, Witten does lead all NFC TE’s in catches and has to be close in yds, but that’s beside the point. The voters will see Davis’ 11 TD’s and cream their jeans…that’s fine. As long as Witten keeps doing what he does (that being the best TE in the league BY FAR), I’m fine with him not making the pro bowl.

by TheRZA on Dec 25, 2009 3:27 AM CST up reply actions

Witten should be in the top 3

You can make the case for Gonzalez and Vernon Davis, but Shockey??? No sir, that is some BS. Witten’s numbers are close to the top of the TE’s and add the blocking skills, he’s #1.

Oh well, not going to get to upset about it. He’s still ours.

The most telling stat-

Confirms statistically what I’ve always thought about Romo. The man is a beast at putting together a drive to end a half; 7/20 (over 1/3!) of his TD passes have come in the last 2 minutes of either half.

Its a thing of beauty.

I find myself in those situations never, ever, wondering whether Romo can drive for the score, just how it will all play out.

If any Cowboys have a gripe for not making Pro-Bowl

… they are Austin and Jenkins.

Austin is having an excellent year and leads the leugue in TDs. More eye-popping is if when you project his numbers for a full year starting.

Jenkins is the BEST cornerback in the NFC not named Woodson. His 2nd year pass defense numbers are BETTER than Darrell Revis’s, who most consider the best CB in the NFL. Winfield has been injured most of the season. Samuel is sneaky smart, but not a better cover guy. Arizona has a CB that is pretty good too.

In Jenkins’ case, since this is his breakout year, the widespread recognition may not happen until next season, though.

They might as weel re-name the pro bowl the fantasy football bowl

because the players with the best numbers get voted in, not necessarily the best players.

Witten is a great example as is Romo. #9 is putting together his best and most efficient season of his career, yet probably won’t get voted in. 23/7 TD/INT ratio is wicked sick for a gunslinging qb.

In the long run...

who cares?

Jason Witten is a badass tightend, everyone knows he’s a bad ass tightend. Most people recognize him as the most complete tightend in the NFL with Heath Miller being second.

How many probowls has Miller been too?

I’m not going to hate on Vernon Davis(who has been rather impressive) or these other tightends who have put up good numbers, it’s not like they are just getting in on name, they have been productive in some areas.

I had a much tougher time when guys like DeAngelo Hall were getting into the Pro Bowl just due to interceptions, certainly considering alot of widereceivers smoked his ass.

Same with SS Roy Williams when he was getting voted in for no good reason at all.

Heath Miller is a big bag of bleh to me...

…I know he’s widely viewed as a premier TE by critics, but everytime I see the guy, he underwhelms me. I’d put Davis, Heap (when healthy), Shockey, Gates, Witten, etc. all ahead of him. Blocking plays a factor, sure, but not as much as people would like to say it does. Especially in today’s NFL.

by TheRZA on Dec 25, 2009 3:32 AM CST up reply actions

Well you haven't watched him very much.

That,

or we just have differing opinions. Like I said, I’d take him any day of the week blocking wise over any of the guys I mentioned other than Witten. He just doesn’t impress me as much as the others do in terms of pure athleticism and receiving prowess. It’s impossible not to have watched him very much…CBS basically shoves him down my throat 8-10 Sundays a year, regardless of regional broadcasts.

Eli, like Romo..is not getting the recognition he deserves..

He is also posting his best season ever, and he has done it with a very young receiving group..Romo’s stats are his best ever..Witten is the best tight-end in the league..hands down..He does everything..Terry is right, re-name it the Fantasy Bowl…It always has been a waste of time anyway..Who cares about that game anyway?..As far as I am concerned each team has their own MVP, All-pro players..I don’t need a bunch of fans in bum-F Eygpt voting..The most important votes are those from the coaches around the league…they know full well who the players on other teams they face that keep them up at night trying to prepare for.

Remember when Dallas started Terry Glenn against the Giants in the playoffs after missing the entire season? How effective was he? With a rusty Glenn and a gimpy TO playing on a sprained ankle, you can look at film of that game and it looks like there was not an open WR the entire game.

Free has played well. Why would we disrupt that to put in Colombo, who may or may not be effective? Do or die games are not times to take a leap of faith. Wade did it with Glenn a couple of years ago, presumeably to rationalize their decision to keep him on the roster all year. It was a huge mistake, and I have long felt that was a main reason our 13-3 season was flushed down the toilet. Let’s not make the same mistake twice.

I think that is a way different type of situation though...

Glenn was out the entire season, almost entire offseason.

Columbo has been out a few weeks.

I agree

but it’ll be an interesting decision. My guess is that Colombo only goes in if he’s 100%.

Colombo should start when he's 100%

Starters shouldn’t lose their job to an injury.

I'm with you on that Terry.

Is there any discernable difference in their value on runs vs passes?

For example, is one better at blocking on 3rd and long? 3rd and one? Situational substitutions for an OLineman? Just trying to think outside the norm.

My first inclination is to keep Free in there, as he has been money. But if Columbo really is ready to go 100%, then it’s hard to say no.

We haven't really heard Free's name since he took over.

That is a good thing. The kid is a player.

Yea, it's amazing.

After last year’s debacle, I think Cowboy fans all had to be apprehensive when Free stepped in. Yet the lack of belly-aching about the OLine says it all.

I had the same thought

Hoping they’ll work him in and still give Free some series too.

Although comparing a WR to an OL, it’s very different and not as bad as what they did w/Glenn, which was stupidity.
And as someone said, it’s not the whole year.

Looks like "neon" Deon Anderson will be practicing today.

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

You know as much as Eagle's fans make fun of Dallas and it's owner....

is there a bigger joke than the Eagle’s giving out an award to Michael Vick for “Courage”?

Guess I have a different definition of the word.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Dec 24, 2009 12:45 PM CST reply actions

Come on, hater.

Do you know how much restraint it’s taken for Vick to go this long without choking out a few puppies?

It's a sick joke for sure

Also a slap in the face to other guys who legitimately deserve the recognition.

Right...

…if anything, Westbrook should get the award for coming back, what, three weeks after his second concussion in as many weeks?

After the game

When Vick says, ’let’s go dawg,’ you definitely don’t want to go.
