The Courageous Michael Vick
Here's an interesting story - http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Eagles-players-honor-Michael-Vick-with-award-for?urn=nfl,210601
Not sure how brave it is for Vick to play this year. I imagine that if any adjective should be used to describe Vick playing in the NFL in 2009, it's "grateful."
Maybe I'm missing something. Did the Pacman Jones win the Cowboys' award last year? Just wondering a little...

Don't be so hard, he IS courageous
I mean come on, it shows a great deal of courage to get paid millions of dollars to play a sport when you’re nearly bankrupt.
If I were an Eagle
I would have given it to DeSean Jackson, whose father passed away earlier this year, or maybe somehow have it to do with Jim Johnson, if that’s possible.
Could be the worst Ed Block award ever.
Westbrook deserves it the most. I mean come on, the guy is going to put his body in the path of Brian Dawkins on Sunday after 2 consecutive concussions.
"THIS IS NOT COLLEGE NO MORE. THIS IS THE BIG MAN SPORT." ~Crazy Lady on BGN forums
He's pretty much playing for his career now
I think the Eagles cut ties this offseason. Westbrook gets a one-year (or so) deal elsewhere, and he probably does decent, but the end to a fantastic career is nigh.

More like the contagious Michael Vick (aka Ron Mexico)
Seriously, what are they thinking? This must have been a case where some of the players thought it would be funny to vote for him, never thinking he’d actually win. Meanwhile, there’s Westbrook coming back from 2 concussions to try and play.
Drago says, "We must break you!"
I still have a fantasy football book from a few years back
That every time it mentioned him, it was Ron Mexico instead of Michael Vick. Was classic…
Can someone call "Bye, Dawk"
to help put a good spin on this one…
"What the hell is going on out there?" - Vince Lombardi.
My guess is
Bye Dawk is just as perplexed as we are, except it’s his team so he’s keeping a low profile about it.
Meh...
My initial thought was “Really, Eagles?” And then I realized it’s an award that’s voted on by the players, which makes a little more sense.
What Vick did to those dogs was reprehensible, but you know what? After doing very little the first half of the season, he’s beginning to contribute to the offense, he hasn’t been a distraction at all, and clearly his teammates like him.
It’s no secret that the Eagles are loaded at QB, and if they can trade him for an extra pick this offseason, then signing him this year was an outstanding move. All this award does is give his value a little boost, so it’s fine by me.

You were wrong sir..
Our little green friend actually sees some sense in Vick getting the award.
Well, Bye, Dawk
Why stop there?
Let’s call the White House and have them award him the “Presidential Medal of Freedom”.
"What the hell is going on out there?" - Vince Lombardi.
I couldn’t possibly care any less who wins the “Ed Block courage award.” Hell, a couple days ago I didn’t even know the “Ed Block courage award” existed.
Would I give an award to a guy s couple years removed from murdering dogs? No, probably not. But it’s nice to see his teammates have his back, and if other GM’s around the league are encouraged by the impression Vick has made on his new team and it helps them decide to pony up a little bit more to trade for him… Great.

The thing is...
I don’t hate Vick, I feel like he has payed his debt to society and hope that he can turn his life and image around, this is totally on the Eagles organization for giving him the award.
The things he has said, just pisses me off though.
But this comment in particular bothers me, “I’ve overcome a lot, more than probably one single individual can handle or bear”.
Really Michael Vick? REALLY?
I’m sure marines, soldiers, seaman, and airman that have come back home seeing their friends and partners die in the heat of battle have nothing on someone on you.
I’m sure Javon Walker, who a couple of years sat in a limo with Darrent Williams, soaked in his blood and holding his dead teammate in his hands didn’t have a thing on you.
I’m sure Kevin Everett, the Buffalo Bills tightend that was paralyzed a few years ago, probably hasn’t had to deal with anything.
Glad he’s doing better, hope for the best from him, but he needs to come back to reality. People deal with crappy situations all over the world, most of them never had million’s of dollars and threw it all away on something that is clearly illegal.
Redemption, sure. Pity? Look somewhere Ron Mexico.

Something like this shows what kind of TEAM Philly is.
They have a true brotherhood in that locker room that I am jealous of. They stand up for each and every one of their brothers. That is the difference between us and them. That will likely be the reason they send us home in Week 17.

Carl, I normally agree with almost everthing you write.
But Really?
I guess it is somewhat admirable that the Eagles have obviously accepted Vick into the locker room. But do you truly believe that he was deserving of such an award?
So I had to establish the rules and regulations of the game...85!

Yes, I honestly do think he is deserving.
Make no mistake, he dug his own hole. What he has overcome is his own stupidity. But he has overcome nonetheless. He has stood up and taken every bit of punishment he was given. He has accepted responsibility, kept his mouth shut and been grateful.
Also, this was his first real screw up. He got hit with the book and took it like a man. Im willing to let him live.

So it lies in the eyes of the beholder
When you don’t consider his crime to be so egregious, it guess it becomes easier to forgive.
Yes, the man paid his debt, but I doubt he should be showered with awards because it is so brave of him to get back to work and earn a paycheck. Woohoo. A joke is what this is.

Don't you love bleeding heart liberals.
They’re the same people that don’t realize freedom isn’t free.
How bout dem Frogs!!!!
I'm a liberal now?
Im not sure how you can determine my political affiliation based solely on my willingness to forgive one individual.

I agree with you DIRE on Vick. And because my political leanings are more liberal than conservative, I can assure you this is not a liberal / conservative thing.

Yep has nothing to do with politics, has to do with sensibility.
Mike Furrey gets the same award, says he doesn’t feel like he really deserves it after setting up an entire foundation for no other reason besides the fact that he’s a decent human being.
I hope Plaxico Burress gets the award when he comes back for whatever team he’s on. “Way to be couragous Plax!”

Yeah he has, both financially and in terms of giving his time

I'm pretty much in the middle myself,
but to give this guy an award for courage is totally insane to me. I maybe over reacting to this, but I have always had animals and would never hurt one of them. All dogs all very special to me. Their loyalty is amazing.
How bout dem Frogs!!!!
Forgive him!?
I’m all for forgivness in some cases but you’re in no place to forgive the guy. Unless of course one of your dogs was mauled during those barbaric fights.

If I'm in no place to forgive him
then you are in no place to condemn him based on what you just said.

I condemn him
to do the kind of things to those dogs you have to be born a sick human being. It must be genetic. Look how messed up his brother Marcus Vick was.
How is he liberal? Vick went to LEAVENWORTH for god's sake! He paid his debt, and now is free to move on
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
No one is saying we shouldn't let Vick live
or that he didn’t handle his incarceration and rehabilitation with humility and some dignity. I’ve always thought spending time in jail for his offense was out of whack.
But the point is, does he deserve the Ed Block Courage award? And while the Eagles might have a better “brotherhood” than the Cowboys, whatever THAT means, it still seems obvious to me that the team had more worthy candidates. And we can certainly make fun of their laughable decision.
Fair enough response
and I respect your sentiment. Just disagree that what he has done since leaving prison should be considered courageous. As for this
He got hit with the book and took it like a man. Im willing to let him live
Amen to that.

I am with you Carl
What Vick did was horrific, but the guy served his time in Leavenworth (Google that name if you are not familiar with it, it is not a country club prison) and has by all appearances been a model citizen since his release.
Saying that, any award for courage should have been awarded to Pat Tillman and then retired, never to be given again.

I would point to better gameplanning, execution and luck. Brotherhood is for the media.

Yeah that's what it is...
“Brotherhood”, I know that if I was in a flight of people in the dessert and some guy got in trouble and was able to not get in trouble anymore they shouldn’t get an award.
This has nothing to do with Michael Vick, if it was Joe Blow I’d say the same thing.
I don’t find it “couragous”.
Forgiving someone, and awarding someone is different.
by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Dec 26, 2009 11:47 AM CST up reply actions
Seriously?
giving this award to a miserable human being shows they are a great team? Just the opposite.
The Ed Block Courage Award
was given to Michael Vick because, in the “eyes of his fellow teammates, is a source of inspiration and courage.”
Yes, you too can spend time in jail to rejuvanate a mediocre career in the NFL. What an inspiration. I guess that’s what “brotherhood” is all about.
If brotherhood is forgiving a man that servered a few months in jail for
drowning, electrocuting, torturing and who knows what else to poor innocent dogs then I’m out on that brotherhood. I have no use for a person that hurts kids or animals. This world would be a lot better off with those people eliminated. Where’s the f—king courage in coming back to play football for a lot of money. I wish nothing but the worst for the SOB.
How bout dem Frogs!!!!
You forget, in prison he had to overcome the malevolent prison guards
And the warden who forced him to use his banking background for money laundering purposes. It was only after he carved a tunnel through his cell’s stone wall and crawled through the sewage pipe to freedom that he could play football again. It’s like something out of a movie if you ask me.
An interesting discussion; some thoughts:
First, this has nothing to do with the Eagles; it has more to do with a feeling, within some circles, that no matter what the cause (even if the cause is your own conduct), the consequences suffered as a result are never, or not fully, deserved.
Thus, heroes are made of (and awards are given to) those who succumb to our basest instincts merely by their getting caught, punished, and serving their sentence (this is all Vick has done so far).
To many, Vick’s punishment was his just deserts. But to others, he is a victim; to them, the prison term, the lost money, the damaged reputation, etc, are the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, rather than just deserts. Looked at this way, he has shown courage in the face of adversity.
Looked at from this point of view, we better understand things like Joey Porter’s tributes to Plexico Burress. According to Porter, Burress is a victim—he needed to carry a firearm for personal safety and the laws of NY are unjust and therefore the punishment undeserved. For Porter and others with this type of thinking, athletes who run afoul of the law (and not only athletes) are victims (of their social milieu, their upbringing, or a society stacked against them). And victims need should not be held accountable for their conduct.
In my humble opinion, this type of thinking is poison; it is as distressing as a complete lack of empathy for people who make mistakes.
We are better served by teaching our children that, although we can all make excuses, being an adult means taking responsibility for our actions, regardless of the underlying factors. From this point of view, Michael Vick is being an adult, finally. People should not get awards for doing what they are supposed to do.

He’s gulity of being stupid not murdering dogs.

I am not capable of hating someone I dont know.
It really amazes me how many other people dont have a problem doing that at all. The hatred just oozes out of these comments. Some people dont even have the fundamental man to man respect to call him his right name. To call any man you dont know an “SOB” is childish. We can disagree all day about Vick, but I’ve got a real problem when men start calling other men outside of their name. Thats just childish and uncalled for.

If you condone his actions
that your business, I don’t. I am capable of hating a man I don’t personally know. You’re right I have no respect for this man If you want to forgive him and pat him on the butt and tell him it’s ok now here’s an award to show the football world you are courageous, that’s your right, but it’s my right to hate the SOB for what he did.
How bout dem Frogs!!!!
There are many men in the world who have done horrendous deeds to innocent people
that I have no problem hating. I don’t hate Vick, but I don’t see him as more deserving of the award than a teammate like Brian Westbrook. If Vick gets the award for overcoming the negative public perception of him, then heck, give it to McNabb who has put up with a decade of unwarranted crap from his own city.

I just made this FanPost
because I thought, in the spirit of the season, that us Cowboy fans – of all ages, faiths, races and sexes – could join together and mock our archrivals.
Apparently some of us have some issues. But don’t we all? Sigh…
I will note for the record that the Ravens have never awarded Ray Lewis as their Ed Block Courage Award recipient, even though he has come back from injuries, demonstrates strong leadership on the field, and has a solid record of community work and philanthropic endeavors off the field.
But I guess his Ravens teammates don’t respect tha “brotherhood.”
It is the Eagles choice who gets the award
but if I was a previous winner of that award, I’d feel insulted.
It took Vick guts to come back and face the music but there was a lot of money to be made by facing that music and his “struggles” don’t compare with what many other NFL players have had to go through.
+1
I also didn’t like the response he gave. Thought it was slapping himself on the back too much.
by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Dec 26, 2009 12:14 PM CST up reply actions
It's actually pretty disrespectful to Vick
The message is: you deserve an award for doing what your supposed to do and for doing what others have always done (i.e., being law abiding citizen). Very sad and disrespectful that his teammates hold him to no higher standard.
"Confidence doesn't come out of nowhere. It's a result of something... hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication." --Roger Staubach
Guts?
it took guts to make millions of dollars by playing a game. Yeah. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard.
Read what I wrote again
and stop oversimplifying my words. It took guts because he knew he would be getting it from all angles but not the kind of guts that NFL players generally get awarded for.
It was the guys teamates who gave him the award.
Can’t do anything about that other than disagree with the Eagles.
