Seven Statistical Nuggets - Playoffs, Baby!

PLAYOFFS! Random statistical thoughts and musings (PLAYOFFS!) as I post my final Seven Nuggets of the season. PLAYOFFS!

Star-divide

1. NFC East: Just another fairground attraction

Merrigoround_medium

The merry-go-round that could be the NFC East this year.

2. Turnover Ratio

Thanks in large part to Romo's significantly improved ability to protect the ball, it looks like we might end the season with a positive TO ratio. Over the last 10 years, the Cowboys and Eagles made it to the playoffs a combined twelve times (green highlights in table below). Only once in that span did one of the two make it to the postseason with a negative TO ratio.

Turnover Ratio by season, 2000-2009

2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009
Cowboys -14 -9 -4 -4 -15 -5 +1 +5 -5 +2
Eagles +2 +9 +14 +4 +6 -7 +5 -8 +3 +17

3. Watch out for Mike Jenkins

Raf has a recent story (Fun with Scientific Football '09) that provides some perspective on what type of stats to look for when evaluating cornerbacks:

Success Rate: A 40% success rate against passes thrown their way is the dividing line for starting corners; a percentage above 40% denotes quality. The further below it falls, the more sub-par the corner is. Stopping opponents 50% of the time appears to be the threshold for being considered a 'shutdown corner'.

YPA: Similar to the success rate, anything below 6.0 Yards per pass thrown their way can be considered elite, anything below 7.0 denotes quality, and the higher it goes, the more sub-par the corner is.

Here's a breakdown of where our 3 cornerbacks stand against those criteria:

Dallas Cowboys Cornerbacks, season splits 2009

Jenkins TNew Scandrick

Games 1-7 Games 8-14 Games 1-7 Games 8-14 Games 1-7 Games 8-14
Sucess Rate 45% 51% 38% 51% 36% 42%
Yards p. ATT 7.4 6.0 8.4 6.4 7.1 6.6

What makes these numbers all the more remarkable is that during the 7 game stretch in games 8-14 we played all four top ranked teams by ppg, as per today (NO: 1st, SD: 2nd, PHI: 3rd, GB: 4th, NYG: 8th, WAS 25th, OAK: 31st). Note that this data excludes Sunday's game against the Redskins, but I doubt any of these numbers have gotten worse :-)

Mike Jenkins has delivered a remarkable performance over the stretch, and for all the flak and abuse TNew is constantly getting, his numbers also look pretty good over the stretch. Scandrick is still behind our two top corners but his numbers are showing an upward trend, despite a game against the Saints he'll want to forget real quick: 7 of 7 passes were completed against him, one for a TD.

With the vaunted Eagles secondary up next, here's how our cornerbacks compare, and keep in mind that while our CBs are getting hotter by the minute, the Eagles secondary has cooled off significantly compared to how they started the season.

Cornerbacks: Defensive Passer Ratings through week14

Position Player  Snaps  Thrown At  Rec  Success rate  Yds
 Y/TA
  TD
 INT  Def. Rating
Eagles Sheldon Brown 840 76 37 51.3% 534 7.0 2 5 53.3
Asante Samuel

Joselio Hanson
348 45 33 26.7% 320 7.1 1 1 91.0
Cowboys Mike Jenkins 826 87 45 48.3% 551 6.3 2 5 55.3
Terence Newman 895 86 48 44.2% 633 7.4 4 2 85.1
Orlando Scandrick 492 75 46 38.7% 512 6.8 2 1 85.0

Note: Data is through week 14 and does not contain the Broncos and Redskins games.

4. Criminally underappreciated: Pom Poms in the NFL.

It’s high time we examined the facts regarding Pom Poms. I urge you to examine each fact closely and make up your own mind on the Pom Pom controversy: Boom or Bust?

68675681_medium 18771656_medium 55358502_medium  93011205_medium
Fact No. 1:
Simply having a pair of poms often causes cheerleaders to feel more excited, less inhibited. Psychologically speaking, that's a plus for every fan.
Fact No. 2:
You'll find poms in all ranges of sizes and color, although it requires an experienced eye and hand to determine the exact size of a particular pom.
Fact No. 3:
Sometimes, it's not even the pom-poms themselves, but the mere promise of pom-poms that gets fans in the spirit.
Fact No 4:
Experts disagree about exactly when pom-poms went mainstream, but they have had a huge impact on cheerleading and, really, cheerleaders with poms are just happier.

85586908_medium 60433581_medium
83891523_medium 70506834_medium
Fact No. 5:
There are those who say that the pom is simply about shimmer and shake. True aficionados, however, understand that the pom has made cheerleading a deeper, more emotionally satisfying experience for the discerning fan.
Fact No. 6:
Color coordination: Blue and white uniforms. Blue and white pom-poms. Nothing fancy. But very, very, very effective.
Fact No. 7:
Why the Big Pom-Poms? Smaller poms (5-inches, say) are great for fast-moving choreographed routines, but football cheerleaders often prefer 7-inch poms because they can be seen clearly from the stands.
Fact No 8:
Going with poms made of vinyl - as opposed to plastic - gives the pom an attention-grabbing "wet look."

5. Time to celebrate ourselves ...

In 2009 there were a total of 1,221 (and counting) fanposts posted on BTB. That's an average of over 3 per day. If you are a BTB Junkie like me, sometimes it's hard to keep up with all the comments that pour in on some of these fanposts, and I'm sure my employer absolutely hates fanposts that develop into seemingly neverending threads.

Hats off to 5 Blings for keeping me away from work the most - he is responsible for a full third of the 15 most commented fanposts.

7. The only stat that really counts

From here on forward, there is only one stat that really counts, and that is a big, fat W: all other stats become meaningless. This will therefore be my last Seven Nuggets post for the season. Thank you all for your attention, kind words, encouragement and criticism over the last couple of months - what a ride it's been - and I leave you with enough cheerleaders to last through February!

On Friday, I will be heading off to the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks of serious windsurfing and doubt I'll want to find the time there to invest in posts like this (barring days of torrential rainfall of course). Instead, I'll emulate Montecito Tex with his Calvados, and imbibe copious amounts of rum-laced drinks while (hopefully) smoking a couple of victory cigars. And unlike Tex, I will only be thinking happy thoughts.

Pom Pom Exhibit No 2

Well . . . the colors of red and grey are ugly and I just don’t see the actual pom pom; are we sure that Exhibit 2 even is demonstrating any pom pom; again, however, we have to admire the blue and silver pom poms . . . first and best always.

it'd probably only work in an up/down kind of game

that way it’s more fun to watch the changing reactions of the fans throughout the game. Also only worth it if we win…
Could be a lot of good content with this game though, lots of competition (hate) between the fans of the teams.

by stevefs12 on Dec 28, 2009 9:54 PM CST reply actions

Let's put those second half YPAs in context

Jenkins’ 6.0 is money. It’s better than any season Newman has had the last five years.

Newman’s 6.4 matches his average from ‘04 through ’07. He’s started slowly this year, but he’s back to his old level.

Scandrick’s 6.6 is remarkable because 6.6 was the best number Anthony Henry ever posted for Dallas.

For all the abuse Orlando has taken this year, he’s not playing any worse than Dallas’ 2nd corner ever did.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 29, 2009 2:17 AM CST reply actions

Well put Raf, and thanks for clarifying

Here’s another interesting angle. Because our CBs had two lousy games to start the season, the overall numbers do no accurately reflect their recent level of play, so here’s a split for games 1-2 and 3-14.

Games: ……1-2……3-14
Jenkins: …..10.2……6.0
Newman: …12.0……6.7
Scandrick: …9.4…….6.1

by One.Cool.Customer on Dec 29, 2009 3:15 AM CST up reply actions

The Eagles on the other hand ...

are clearly in a downward spiral. I looked at the same game 1-7 and 8-14 split as in point 3 above for Sheldon Brown and Asante Samuel.

Both started the season very strong. In games 1-7, Brown had an amazing 4.3 YPA and a 67% success rate. Samuel had a 6.5 YPA and a 42% success rate.

In games 8-14 the Eagles played only 2 top 10 ranked offenses vs. the Cowboys’ 5 (SD: 2nd, NYG: 8th, ATL: 12th, DAL: 14th, SF: 20th, CHI: 24th, WAS: 25th) but their CB’s numbers still imploded:

In games 8-14, Brown had a dismal 8.9 YPA and a 40% success rate. Samuel had an abysmal 10.0 YPA and a 32% success rate.

Hope you do not mind a little more info...

Since you wrote of wins and losses, consider the NFC playoff team records against each other. Of course, the only team with wins against the top two seeds in the conference at this moment is the Dallas Cowboys.

NO 1-1
PHI 0-2 (with DAL this Sunday)
ARI 1-0 (with GB this Sunday)
MIN 2-1
GB 1-2 (with ARI this Sunday)
DAL 2-1 (with PHI this Sunday)

With a win at Arlington Sunday, the Cowboys
would boast the best record against NFC playoff teams. Dallas has already played more games against playoff teams than any other NFC team.

In addition, the Cowboys boast the most difficult divisional schedule of the NFC playoff teams. Since 2000, six of the eight NFC representatives have come from a NFC division that has less than a .500 winning percentage.

In other words, 75% of the teams that won the NFC since it went to four divisions, have come from very weak divisions.

How does that bode well for the Cowboys?

The two teams that went on to the Super Bowl from the NFC after having to play a strong divisional schedule are the Giants and the Buccaneers.

Those two teams also happen to be the only two NFC teams to have won the Super Bowl since realignment.

That's a really interesting point

especially given that the media was saying for a while there that the only (or most of the) teams we’ve won against were ones with losing records. Haven’t heard that conversation much recently though, and none of it since NO.

Just curious, what were the ratings of the other cornerbacks in the division?

Corey Webster was getting a lot of preseason hype by Giants fans as being a lockdown corner, and as a Texas fan, I’m naturally curious about Aaron Ross. Au contraire, there are 6 reams without Cheerleading squads

Bears, Packers, Lions, Steelers, Browns and Giants all have no official cheerleaders

Packers: "The Packers haven’t had official cheerleaders since 1988, however cheerleaders from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and St. Norbert College appear at home games throughout the season. The Packers discontinued their squad of official cheerleaders in large part due to fan indifference." Musta been some nasty ones.

The Steelers had cheerleaders called the Steeleretts from 1961-1970. Experiment quickly abandoned, as according to Terry " there aren’t enough hot women in western Pa for the Steelers to have cheerleaders."

The Chicago Honey Bears (It’s true, I kid you not, I swear!) lasted from 1977 -1985

If ever there was a team in need of some kind of spark and enthusiasm it would be the Lions, but William Clay Ford always wanted a ‘wholesome’ atmosphere. They did bring in high school cheerleaders and baton-twirlers and throwers to the games at some point, but that nonsense was quickly abandoned again.

The Browns are still thinking about whether or not to have a logo. After that, they’ll decide on cheerleaders.

And the Giants? They don’t have cheerleaders because nobody wants to cheer for the Giants.

“The Browns are still thinking about whether or not to have a logo. After that, they’ll decide on cheerleaders.

And the Giants? They don’t have cheerleaders because nobody wants to cheer for the Giants."

LMAO. I did notice that we have a repeat pic of the Dallas cheerleader this post (or at least I think it is… could be wrong).

Ah, an eye for detail!

was she the cheerleader in

this 7 Stats? Doesn’t quite look like it… I do remember at least one of the other pictures you’ve used of her.
Don’t get me wrong, definitely not complaining. :-)

And the Pro Bowl ones too!

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?
