MNF Open Thread

It's the last Monday night game of the season. And, it could actually end up mattering to the Cowboys. The first step in the Cowboys admittedly slim chances of grabbing the #2 seed and a bye is the Vikings losing to the Bears tonight. Okay, I did say slim chances. But what the heck, it's at least something to root for in the game.

This is an open thread for game chat.

the Bears are not the FIRST team to do this

but what a dropoff from being in the SB just a few years ago!
What a fluke year that was for Grossman.

Pessimists say the cup is half-empty, while optimists say it's half-full. Well, isn't it both? Realist Larry, 2009

Remember Kyle Orton

took them to the playoffs. Putting Grossman back in there was a joke. Orton got the shaft!

Wrong year.

I think you’re thinking of a different year man.

The year they went to the superbowl rex started all year.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Dec 28, 2009 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

I stand corrected

Grossman did start every game that year. It was the year before that Orton started most of the games.

Secondly,

For the JJ/GM haters, he’s not perfect, but when you see some teams, and moves like getting Cutler, he’s probably at least in the middle of the pack as a GM.

Could be worse.
Although I thought Cutler would improve the Bears!

Well I have to write something good about Berman,

On the “c’mon man” segment berman picked the giants howler of a game against the panthers to close out their stadium; in particular the scramble that eli made when he is 5 yards past the line of scrimmage before he realizes that he cannot pass the ball. Sheli scrambles and promptly gets strip tackled. ROFL!!!! that is an epic fail.

Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

we start 9 IDP

3 LB, 3 DL, and 3 DBs. It’s kinda cool really. I won the regular season, but then the Colts had to go and rest Wayne and Dallas Clark. Should have replace Wayne, but my back up was Mr. Frying Pan hands himself.

I’ve had that Hawthorne kid from Seattle since Dallas played them and have Winfield going tonight.

Why does it seem every year

That teams that have nothing to play for who play teams with something on the line, playoff-wise, often beat those teams with something on the line? Remember the Cowboys vs Detroit 3 years ago? We’ve had the Saints this year, the Vikings, the Giants…What about the Raiders vs. the Bucs last year @ Tampa? I wonder what is going to the mindset of the teams. Do the teams with something on the line play “tight”?

by DatNguyenNguyenScenario on Dec 28, 2009 9:35 PM CST reply actions

Yup

It’s easier to play when the results mean nothing. These teams are still failures…failures at even sucking consistently. I mean, now you’re toying with your fanbase that had its heart set on a high draft pick.

down 10, and a full quarter and then some to go.

It would put my mind at ease a little if they lose this – we avoid the only really bad scenario i can think of – losing to philly at home followed by playing philly on the road in round 1.

why did some cowboys fans want to trade romo for cutler again?

by THEjarhead on Dec 28, 2009 10:01 PM CST reply actions

(Doing best Montecito Tex impression.)

He has Vanderbilt pedigree that the genius Jason Garrett could mold, unlike that backwards hat wearing, pair shaped, divorcee chasing best QB to not win a playoff game.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Dec 28, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

Nice

Montecito doesn’t show up unless the Cowboys are doing bad, is he really a fan… of something other than himself?

by CounterEMF on Dec 28, 2009 10:07 PM CST up reply actions

simple

at times Romo has seemed like he’s on the brink yet he self destructs = Cutler
Romo’s pre-November 2009 incarnation was of a reckless gunslinger whose strengths necessarily come along with his weaknesses = Cutler
So in those regards, they’re the same.
Romo has niftier feet and a knack to put some touch on the ball while moving. Cutler doesn’t have that.
Cutler has significantly better pocket QB skills than Romo, but is prone to bone headedness.
Cutler has a way, WAY stronger arm than Romo.
Cutler is younger than Romo.

If Romo continued to fail and struggle as he was from November of last year through September of this year, why not dump him for someone younger with equal or greater promise ? And, if you disagree with that because you’re a Romo fan, you can certainly understand the thesis behind it.
The people who suggested it are probably more pragmatic in their fandom, and less breathless in their adoration of “idols.”
Personally, I think Cutler’s career arc will mirror Jake Plummer’s.

by Joey2zs on Dec 28, 2009 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

or jeff george

Dude aint the same as romo, and thats not some hero worship stuff.

“cutler has significantly better pocket skills than romo..”

how so?

Also, people who suggested it were more pragmatic in their fandom? I dont think so. I tend to agree with rafael’s analysis of those of the trade romo for cutler ilk: “dont chase shiny things” was the way he put it, which was exactly what they were doing.

the more pragmatic ones were probably the ones calling to NOT make such a trade while the breathless fans were ready to ditch romo for a guy who frankly hasnt shown he is much of a “leader” (which was the biggest knock on romo in the off season).

Well, I guess cutler bought himself some time tonight, (wonder if he said anything to a.peterson on the way off the field).

This hurt my head, Raf

But I think I’ve got a Vikings/Packers round 1 scenario. Please point out if I made an error. Vikings would be 3 seed and Packers would be 6 seed
Cowboys W 2
Eagles L 5

Packers W 6
Cardinals L 4

Giants W n/a
Vikings L 3

Saints 1 (Locked up)

When in doubt, empty your magazine

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

Link to playoff possibilities for Cowboys

MudMarine may have hit the sack… he posted this link earlier that has all the what ifs for the Cowboy playoffs (at least I think they are all here)…

So if Dallas beats PHI

And GB beatsAZ
and Midgets beat MIN

then Dallas is #2

Except for the Giants vs. Minny

but anything can happen.
Giants will either go all out, or fold up and collapse-uhm, like Dallas did last year!

Pessimists say the cup is half-empty, while optimists say it's half-full. Well, isn't it both? Realist Larry, 2009

they'll go all out

their season has been an absolute mess, and they’re coming off one of the more embarassing performances in franchise history. Add in that minnesota beat THEM week 17 last year and I think the Giants will go all out.

And then we get Colombo back...healthy, sort of!

Well they have a chance

Looks like the NY @ MIN game is at noon, so we’ll know that piece of the puzzle around game time.

if they lose

theres gonna be some serious scoreboard watching in addition to an nfc east championship game

For all the ups and downs this year, it is awesome to think we have a shot at the two seed going into week seventeen.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

In the WildCard round, 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5.

there are win / loss

combinations of these three games that have us seeded anywhere from 2 to 6:
Philly @ Us
NY Giants @ Minnesota
Green Bay @ Arizona

take a look here:

by stephena on Dec 29, 2009 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

seeds are like this:

1) Saints – division winner with best over all record – bye and home field throughout
2) To Be Determined – division winner second best record – get bye, home playoff game
3) To Be Determined – division winner – home playoff game during wild card weekend
4) To Be Determined – division winner – home playoff game during wild card weekend
5) To Be Determined
6) To Be Determined

Wild Card round:
3 would play 6
4 would play 5

Division Round:
1 would play the LOWEST seed left
2 would play the HIGHEST seed left

NFC Championship
winnders of the games above play, winner represents the NFC in the Bowl
