Cowboys Drop Division Game To Giants, 31-24

No excuses for that one. The Dallas Cowboys got manhandled by a fired up New York Giants team, losing 31-24 after opening up with a solid 10-0 lead. Dallas couldn't run the ball, the defense gave up some big plays and special teams broke down with a missed FG and a punt return for a touchdown. Also, one crucial fumble gave the Giants a big momentum swing heading into halftime.

By dropping this game, the Eagles have caught Dallas in the NFC East (technically Dallas owns the tiebreaker for now) and the Giants are only one game out. Instead of gripping the lead tight, the Cowboys have opened the door for a three-team melee in quest of the NFC East crown.

It doesn't get any easier, the next two games are against the Chargers and the Saints. Those two games will go a long way toward deciding which direction this Cowboys season goes. They're still in good shape for a playoff run, but they'll need some stout efforts over the next two weeks.

Vent in this thread.

(Keep it clean, and keep the name-calling and other crap out of the threads. We will be moderating closely.)

Yeah, the play where he was shoved a little bit

and stumbled back about 5 yards was completely on the O-line.

Jimmy Johnson for GM.

Oline didn't do well either, but

Barber needs to chip away at the defense. He got hit more than he hit others.

by jdramirez on Dec 6, 2009 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

I feel as tough he didn't want to run tough.

He just didn’t hit the hole hard, and was prancing around too much. Speed and quickness is what we expect from Jones, Barber just needs to inflict pain and he didn’t do it.

Barber has started to look like Julius Jones

It's not that I'm saying we're due a playoff win, but I didn't have my license to drive when we won our last one...

I want him twisting and spinning again!

It looked as if he didn’t have enough momentum on that 4th down catch.

I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?

on that 4th down catch

he didn’t have the football sense to get across the first down mark

when he was JJ’s backup, he had average ability w/ a huge chip on his shoulder.

now he just has average ability

by bulldog jeeper on Dec 6, 2009 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

He had just released from the backfield, hadn't really had time yet

And wanted to give Romo an underneath option, I guess. Not a great play, but not the biggest gaffe Barber made on the day.

Larry Allen benched 700 pounds. That is Leonard Davis times two.

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible

I want to believe in this team, but games like this make me feel like all hope is lost.

At least Romo had a great game…. Too bad the rest of this squad hung him out to dry.

Damn it.

Tony did his part - disappointed in Troy comments on hold on Jacobs TD

Tony managed the game well, minus the missed downfield play to a wide open Roy W, and
throwing behind Choice on the 3rd down play.

Will give him the benefit of the doubt that he may have thought choice would be there.

Biggest question to me is the obvious jersey grab on the Jacobs TD catch.

It was clearly visible several times, and all Troy could say was he " may " have gotten away with a hold there.

Come on, tell it like it is , he clearly had a handfull of Sensi’s Jersey from the back, and to me should have at least been called for blocking in the back..

by oldtimer on Dec 6, 2009 6:44 PM CST up reply actions

I was screaming for the holding call....

The minute that Jacobs hit the sideline…. You could see it from every angle.

Even with that non-call, the defense was horrible. I’m tired of seing Carpenter attacked on third downs, and failing. I’m tired of seeing teams throw toward Scandrick to have him seriously fail in coverage. This D had better step it up, or these next two weeks are going to be brutal.

by tkosmith on Dec 6, 2009 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

I was not refrencing that play particularly

I know Spencer blew that play to Jacobs. But every time a team has 3 and 6-10, they’re attacking Carp over the middle of the field. The Gints converted at least 2 easy first downs going right at Carp this game.

Next game, watch on 3rd (Nickel situations) and pay attention to how much teams will attack the middle of the field. Carpenter is awful.

I don’t like saying that, but he is constantly out of position, or drawing himself out of coverage and/or tackling lanes.

On the Giants blog

they are complaining about the push off by Williams on the first TD

You win some and you lose some, Williams did not get a flag and Jacob did not

by a hay on Dec 6, 2009 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

either

way it was a huge play and they would still have been in great position. our defense looked so bad.. before they brought back the punt, steve smith let one bounce of his hands that they should have had. we couldn’t get to eli, again, and it was painful to watch. Wade clearly has a very tough time at making adjustments… whatever defense shows up in the 1st will show up in the 3rd, and good coaches just don’t do that. they change it up, they adjust they fix mistakes, they improve matchups….they replace the kicker when he is missing 7 out of his last ten or whatever it is. this was a tough loss..

Texas Stadium has a hole in the roof so God can watch his favorite team play football.

I think he gave Folk too much of the benefit of the doubt.

2 were attributed to McBriar, and one hit the upright, and at this point, I just don’t see how you don’t sit him for a week and tell him to get his skite together and let beauhler do place kicking for a week.

by jdramirez on Dec 6, 2009 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

I agree. The ball should have been at the 40.

I’m surprised he even mentioned it may be a hold. He tries to go so far the other direction to look unbiased, but it just comes off as ignorant. Troy didn’t have his best game as a color man. He didn’t know that we were out of challenges. And that 2nd challenge was just awful. The men upstairs should have been able to definitely tell that he was inbounds.

Not to say Redskins or Eagles are easy, but I hate the Chargers matchup and the Saints will be a tough one. Problem is that the mental breakdown after three losses to kickoff December will probably prevent us from winning the last two.

by Key19 on Dec 6, 2009 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

It depends on which Cowboys team comes out.

the one that plays hard and smart, or the one with bad tackling, bad penalties, bad drops. We aren’t beating Notre Dame if the later team shows up.

I would feel more inclined to think that I would lose to the Eagles and Skins because season sweeps are a rare occurance in our division.

They held you scoreless for MOST of a game…

They’re offense has even shown some signs of life recently. They have the pieces, they just can’t seem to put them together.

We really needed that win against the Giants for tie breaker purposes….If the Packers and Giants go 10-6 we are done…10-6 wont get it done for us and if this trend continues this month we maybe 9-7 at this end of the day…

This team sprung leaks in all three areas, but the defense had the biggest lapses

they allowed a long drive in the 2nd quarter and that huge swing pass to Jacobs. They did not seal up the run well enough. Romo did not add to the fire but it was a complete failure to step up to the challenge. I do not even know where to start with what this team is going to do.

This game to me hurts more than the first game. Our defense let us down today like they did in the 1st game. Romo played well, but again we threw the football too much. We pretty much have put ourselves in a must win position next week. I’m interested in seeing how they play next Sunday.

I'm not letting Garrett off the hook

I agree that the run game wasn’t working, and one of the few things I think the Giants did well. That should have opened up things in the passing game. I know Romo had almost 400 and I know Witten had over 100 but it always seemed to me that we were in 3rd and long. I give Romo credit for completing so many of those situations, but you have to admit they are low percentage plays. Where’s the creativity when the initial game plan is stopped? I can tell if we’ll win or lose after the first quarter because we are not good at adjusting. Defense played poorly, but I’m willing to give them another mulligan after playing well since game 2. Offense has too many weapons to be shut down like this.

I dont care about the run offense when the passing game is on like it was

this game came down to the defense crumbeling giving up monster plays like they love to do in big games. The special teams which were the whole focus of the offseason gave away 10 points in this game. theres the game right there

Air it out

Everytime I saw Dallas go for a running play, I cringed then rolled my eyes. The running game wasn’t accomplishing much of anything. Taking it to the air got better results. Romo had almost 400 yds, 3 TDs, and no INTs, compared to 45 rushing yards and a crucial fumble.

The giants couldnt feild a drive, all they had was some big play, i feel like dallas outplayed them 90% of the time but its the 10% that actually mattered.

Im so frickin sick of this defense all of a sudden sucking every december. Last year they looked awesome untill the end of the balt game and of coarse that carried over to philly.
When the offense does something good they give it right back.

Nick folk needs to be inactive. why not give beuhler a shot, whats the worst he can do miss, well thats all nick I suck now folk does

no heart

Cowboys for some reason cant get fired up to play big games. Cant blame Romo on this one. No turnovers with no running game, I think he did all he can do. When we need the defense to step up they come up small. I think if they could put it all together they could make a playoff run, but I have no faith in these guys to do it.

Not Enough Heart

This is a Wade Philips issue. The OC installs and runs the offense. the DC installs and runs the defense.

Getting the guys to step up in a game is the HC’s job on game day. IMO, Philips is over his head being both the HC and the DC. He needs to stick to DC and let someone else run the team.

We got ripped by a Giant buzzsaw today. It didn’t need to happen. We lost the game at the end of the half, really. We couldn’t come up with that one stop on their first scoring drive. After the fumble (hey, it happens…just wish it would have happened to them, ya know?), the D didn’t step up again. At that point, Big Blue was jacked up and fully awake again. Had we stopped that first TD, the second half would have ended much differently.

I don’t care about his record, Wade needs to go. I am absolutely not ready for Garrett to step into that role, either. I don’t know if he’s ready.

Inability to step up to the plate is on the HC.

Philips is quite the capable DC

I would have no problem with him as our DC. I actually was hoping that was what JJ offered Wade during the last off season.

We need a HC that can almost force the guys to step it up. Think about how the Steelers played under Cowher. In the biggest games, Jimmah was able to get the Cowboys to step up and win.

We don’t have anyone doing that right now.

Otherwise, they wouldn’t have rallied to keep making comebacks. Coaching mistakes are what hurt.

As soon as Dallas took that 10-0 lead, I became cautiously optimistic, and had a flashback to the night of January 13, 2008. Just before the half, Dallas had a 14-7 lead, and Eli led the Giants down the field with less than a minute on the clock, and tied it up. You know the rest of the story.

This is 2 games against a desperate team where we didn't match intensity.

and in both of those games, we lost. Green Bay was on their last legs and so were the Giants. We gave new life to both of those teams, and the worst part is that we are now competing against both teams for a wild card spot.

by jdramirez on Dec 6, 2009 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

What's that going to mean when...

we play another desperate team? San D looking to keep in the race for a bye? New Orleans showing weakness needing to keep Home Field Advantage? Phillie in the last game of the season?

Washington is the only non-desperate team out there and they just want to keep us out of the playoffs for no reason other than we are the Cowboys.

We need to be able to take that next step and up the intensity over and above our competitors.

Dare I say the words?

Just like Terry Bradshaw said- 55 pass plays?

Something happens when you pass alot, and don’t establish the run, even when you have good success with your passes. it’s called confidence. I don’t have confidence in a pass heavy offense that sweeps the running game under the Carpet. Why would I say that? easy- i don’t believe Garrett knows how to evaluate RB’s correctly, on top of using them in the correct situations, and he doesn’t know the backs he has.

I consider establishing the run based on what I saw at the end of the year last year, and alot of people may start seeing it, or maybe they’ll come and post and try to belittle the point of the topic, but here are the words Dare I say?

No Tashard, No solid ground game that is effective, and thus no victory.

I think steering away from something that was not only not working, but failing miserably, was a good decision by Garrett. Especially with how well Tony was throwing the ball. The purpose of play calling is to move the ball down the field and score and I think if you manage to accomplish that then the play calling isn’t the problem.

How is this Garrett's fault!?

He calls a run play and Gurode and Davis act like turnstiles as defenders run through them and the RB is confronted by a fist full of defenders before he’s even reached the line of scrimmage. The Cowboys Oline is woefully inconsistent and they have been for years.

Throughout the year a lot of people have endlessly repeated "run the ball more Garrett". Now today the game threads were filled with people repeating "why are we still running the football Garrett?", when we were only 4 points behind. Now the game’s over people are going to look at the 55 pass plays and say "you should have run the ball more Garrett". It’s the same knee-jerk reactions every week of making Garrett the scapegoat for any part of the offense that is poor and giving him no credit for any part of the offense that plays well.

If our Oline man can’t even block the guy in front of them it doesn’t matter how many run plays are called.

Luke

I was one that thought the running game wasn’t always being given the chance to do well. So today Garrett ran them inside, Felix outside , screens and the Giants just blanketed the run game. I’m glad he let Tony throw. The passing game will win games, but with the beating Tony takes when he drops back we have to run some to take the pressure off him. We didn’t do that today.

by oldboysfan on Dec 6, 2009 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

Oldboysfan,

I think there’s been occasions this year where Garrett could have run the ball more at times but I don’t think it’s anywhere near the catastrophe that some other people like to make out. By far most of the times the offense has struggled this year it’s has been poor execution by players. And at the top of that list (like the last several years) is the Offensive Line.

And I agree with you that we do need to try to remain somewhat balanced as this Oline can’t consistently protect Romo either.

by Luke. on Dec 6, 2009 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

How is it Garrett's fault?

That’s too easy Luke.

If the run isn’t having success, does that mean you abandon it? How about using the right running back?

How much you want to bet that if you sit Barber, and play Choice a majority of the game, that Barber will re-dedicate himself to get that edge that he has somehow lost?

How about lining Felix up as a reciever, if only as a decoy?

How about making it a priority to get the ball on a screen to Felix or Tashard?

Respectfully, Luke, but it seems no one is willing to accept that without Tashard, our run offense isn’t what it’s supposed to be. When you see Tashard out there, and he proves his mettle again against the good defenses, then, and only then, will you see the pass offense have meaning and effectiveness. Without the run, alot of games will be losses. The Giants seem to be a team that always prove that to us, and our coaches do nothing to react and adjust. There is no one else to question but Garrett. He bears this responsibility.

DallasPalace,

I’m a fan of Tashard Choice as well. I think he’s a real good back and I wouldn’t complain if they decided to give him the start. But I still don’t think it would have made any difference to our poor run blocking.

The offensive line was turning sideways after the snap and letting defenders rush by them. I think Emmitt Smith would have got stuffed running behind this group today. The Giants out mauled us up front and our backs (whether Barber, Jones or Choice) had nowhere to go.

You mentioned screens, I saw them try that, and they got tackled for losses because, again, nobody could hold their block.

Personally I can’t see how that’s solely the fault of the offensive coordinator. When it comes to offensive struggles for this team all roads lead to the Oline.

Also, Garrett is not the Head Coach or the Owner. Barber is getting paid like a big-time starter. Perhaps it’s not Garrett’s decision who starts.

I agree, but I just want to say that

How do we as fans know definitely that something doesn’t work if the offensive coordinator doesn’t try it? I agree that the offensive line played suspect in the second half, but the first half seemed like there were opportunities in the run game. The fact That MB3 and felix didn’t have success doesn’t mean Tashard would have been inneffective, and we are talking about just getting some success, not negative plays. We just don’t know without Tashard getting an opportunity. One thing for certain- We won’t go very far with the kind of running game we are seeing from the O-line, Felix, and MB3. it’s really a poor situation.

Even the people who want to post that the RB’s have nothing to do with it, and that the offensive line is the culprit, cannott deny that Garrett is responsible.

Why was there no attempt to draft any OL early the last few years?
Why no attempts in FA?
Why no trades?

I can’t believe he would not try to at least adress some fresh blood there. Please don’t write that he has no say so in the draft. If he would state his need to Jerry, jerry definitely would go out and make something happen. Nothing has happened with the O-line-nothing, period. Who’s to blame for that?

C’mon man, your Garrett attacks are seriously stretching believability (to put it politely). Now your blaming him for the Draft and Free Agency!? Is there any mistake this team has made (either on field or off it) that you don’t attribute to our offensive coordinator? Garrett’s not the Head Coach, not the Owner, not the General Manager, not the head of Scouting. He’s just the offensive coordinator.

And you’re simply wrong, the Cowboys organization has made lots of moves over the last few years involving the Oline. The problem is the results have been less than what was needed.

Did you hear Terry Bradshaw post game?

55 pass play calls? Even with success passing, it doesn’t always add up to victories, and it never does against the Giants sir. Your forgetting the cardinal rule of beating the Giants- establish the run. You DON’T have to have that much success passing.

Just because I believe barber is miscast as a starter, and Felix not out there at the same time as Tashard alot, as well as Tashard getting a heavy load, doesn’t mean I’m “stretching”, because all we really needed was some effective, hardcore running to quell whatever the Giants were trying to do, as well as limit they’re opportunities.

It seems like all it takes is an arm punch to cause Barber to fumble anymore. He doesn’t have even good speed anymore. Maybe the bench will do him good. Felix looks slow, and off. Garrett using him this way is what I fear- he may become discouraged. Tashard not being used to his strength (as a workhorse back) is all it may take to jumpstart the offense. Are you saying that Garrett has no decisionmaking about the Runningbacks? Who is above Garrett in running the offense then, Wade? Ha! Garrett has no real head coach he has to answer to. THAT is the problem.

Maybe that will make you think about my scrutiny of Garrett differently, because I have always said that this offense needs to help this defense ALOT more than what I’ve seen happen for the last 3 years. Even though I feel the defense had a bad game at the end of the game, it still doesn’t excuse squandered chances to score at the beginning of the game. Your defense is gonna have a collapse every now and then.

I’m sorry, but I stick to questioning these coaches, specifically Garrett. He didn’t have bad execution in his pass playcalls, but 55 pass plays? No Tashard Choice? I mean, come on. I would have thought that some people were watching what Tashard did last year at the end of the year. Have we so quickly forgotten?

Yup, evidence is on your side.

Oh, I see Chandus..

Flip flopping back and forth between Barber and Jones really accomplished alot in that game. Maybe the offensive line played awful, but that further brings out the question of how inept this offense becomes in the december games. I hope they bounce back and get on track, but no effective running game, along with no committment from Garrett to establish it, leaves me skeptical. Sorry that you think I’m wrong with my opinion, but I didn’t arrive at it overnight, and all Garrett does is continue to prove it.

I think it was last week, in another fanpost, Terry wrote “we can beat the Giants with Romo dropping back to pass the majority of the time”. I just shook my head, and said “That’s crazy!”. do you want to know why? because with the good defenses, you HAVE to make them respect your running game. Our passing game itself will not win big games (apparantly even if it does well).
respectfully, Chandus, But I don’t need evidence. Evidence is right there in the outcome of games like this. If your not going to committ yourself to establishing the thing that is going to win the game for you, your not going to win it. The decision to be this way is the coach’s, and I’m not talking about Wade.

I’m saying it’s my opinion that if Tashard is put in there, and the offense sticks with it, there will be an effective running game. Did that swing of playing those better defenses last year, and Tashard having success running against them
not happen? yes it did. Just because in this game, he got two measely touches (out of the Wildcat nonetheless) and that added up to a 1.5 yard average doesn’t disput the point. Running backs like Tashard don’t come in, have a 50 yard run, then sit down for the rest of the game, except when they play for the Dallas Cowboys, and Jason Garrett (just like what happened in the Raiders game).

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Dec 7, 2009 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

Did I hear Terry Bradshaw?

No, I prefer to form my own opinions based on what I saw when I watched the game. Personally I find 95% of the media (on sports, politics or whatever) to be a complete waste of time at best. They’re in it for reasons other than truth or accuracy.

DallasPalace you don’t even seem to be reading my responses to your posts before you’re responding back. Up above I clearly said I didn’t disagree with you about Barber and Choice I just said it wouldn’t have mattered today because our Oline did not block well at all. And look, Barber had a bad game but let’s not make out he’s dog meat ok. He’s a solid player having a rough patch.

When I said that you were stretching believability I was referring to your comment that it is Garrett’s fault "there no attempt to draft any OL early the last few years?". Which I believe is an incorrect statement (they’ve drafted 3 offensive lineman Marten 3rd, Free 4th, Brewster 3rd the last three years). You also said Garrett was to blame for "no attempts in Free Agency" and "no trades" involving the Oline. Again I believe this is incorrect. In the last three years Dallas signed FA Bigg Davis to a huge contract, extended starters Marc Colombo and Flozell Adams, put a Second Round Tender on Cory Procter and traded a 5th Round pick to Denver for Holland. Dallas has tried a number of different things to improve the Oline the problem is the results have been underwhelming.

Anyway, how you believe all those problems could be the offensive coordinator’s fault is beyond me. What about the Head Coach, the Owner and General Manager, the Head of Scouting? Any of these guys make any decisions at all or does Jason Garrett secretly run the entire organization?

Now you suggest that Garrett has no real head coach to answer too and that this is somehow his fault as well. Honestly, to me, your criticisms of Garrett aren’t making a lot of sense.

You also say the Offense has needed to help out the Defense more the last three years and again I completely disagree. This offense (the major part of which is Romo as he can turn missed blocks by our Oline into positive plays) has been the main reason we’ve had winning records the last three years and they’ve consistently bailed out the defense. It’s the defense that has needed to lift it’s game to match the offense and this year they started to show that they might. Today was a setback for them but there’s plenty of time for them to recover.

by Luke. on Dec 6, 2009 11:54 PM CST up reply actions

So you write a lengthy post regarding the run game...

…and yet you don’t mention the offensive line once.

I think you’re confused about what creates a healthy run game.

Gains of 10+ yards are because of backs. But the first 0-10 yards is the offensive line’s job. They didn’t do theirs today. That makes it impossible to create “effective, hard core running.”

by Tim Wilson on Dec 7, 2009 12:06 AM CST up reply actions

Your right Tim

But how can i adress the offensive line’s confusion and ineffectiveness when the first mistake is the coaches use Barber alot (mistake) and put Felix in to run, not line up as a wr (mistake), and not use Tashard but for the stupid Wildcat?

I actually thought the offensive line did ok in the first half. unfortunately, no Tashard, and his running style, and there wasn’t any effective ground game. In the 2nd half is where the offensive line failed. That is understandable, considering the giants zeal to win, along with no effective running in the first half. I question Garrett’s decisionmaking in regards to the running backs.

Dallas owned TOP for 38 minutes the offense had the ball, the defense should not have been gassed or

left out in the cold when your offense is on the field for more than half the game. Dallas owned the ball for over half the game and they passed it 55 times, usually that does not happen; the gints were not going to concede the run dallas work the field with short to medium passes.

Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

by cowboy78 on Dec 7, 2009 7:45 AM CST up reply actions

That's right Cowboy78

Last time we played the Giants, we abandoned the running game when we needed to use it more, and the Giants gambled that we would pass and make a mistake (we did)

This time, They gambled that if they stopped our run, it would force us to pass, and even though it would be close, they would capitalize and at least not loose to our running game .

Do you want to know why that works for them in beating us?

simple- passing alot, by itself, even with success, will not bring victory for this offense. Garrett is wrong, and we are not the Saints pass offense.
It’s too one dimensional, and your’e not hurting the defense (at least the Giants defense) the way you need to. That’s the reason why the run has to be a priority over the pass (to help the passing game).

Excuse me for saying this, but isn’t that what these defensive coordinators have said about Garrett in the other big games we lost? It is in the Giants interest that we continue to run the offense the way we have, because they believe they can overcome it. And they do. We don’t vary our offensive gameplan at all. Are you surprised and shocked by this kind of opinion and analysis?

to be honest, given your schedule I see the Eagles doing it.

I’ve said all along, even during the Giants slump that all 3 of the good East teams will make the playoffs.

What we all do from there is anyone’s guess.

Given what I’ve seen from the Saints…..no one’s running away with the NFC (damn are they lucky….)

and we lost when we didn’t lose the turnover ratio. The defense, ST and running game was just horrible.

WHY did barber not go past the first down marker on that 4th down? that was so stupid. The qb relies on the rb to know where he is. Barber had a pretty bad second half.

Barber goes any farther, Ross may be in position for an INT.

Maybe Barber stops and goes deep, but there seemed to be too much pressure to hold on any longer.

Romo played so well, and aside from our wrs/witten, there weren’t a lot of bright spots. Spencer, Jenkins, Ratliff, Brooking played ok.

first of all, he has no idea whose at fault for that. Romo threw a back shoulder pass and Choice was looking for a deep ball. Its very tough to say whose at fault for that.

but you could point out 10-15 pinpoint precise passes romo made that we wouldn’t have been in the game had he not made them.

THe bottom line is the offense shouldn’t have to play perfect football to beat the giants.

In 2007, thats what happened – the offense played near perfect football both regular season games. In the playoffs we had about 3-5 miscues offensively and lost because of that.

But the bigger problem is our defense continues to struggle to shut them down.

Until Garrett realizes

The value of the all purpose back (Choice) versus the speed back (Felix) or the power back (MB3), then this same waltz is destined to be danced by this offense again. And yes, I believe the offense lost the game. The defense may have a bad juncture at the end, but this offense continues to help the other team in winning by not establishing a solid ground game. here is what the Giiants defense sees..

Felix Jones in the backfield- go after him, the ball is going there (and it does- thanks for making it easy Garrett) No deception whatsoever.

MB3- It’s a run up the middle (it doesn’t matter though, we can get to him- he’s lost whatever speed he had over the last 2 years.)

Tashard Choice – He’s good, but why should we worry about him? We can stop him when they run that razorback, because we’ll go after him. they won’t use him for anything else, so why worry?

Jason Garrett does have a problem establishing the run, whether people want to admit it or not. His decisionmaking and playcalling about the issue has always been marginal at best. Why can’t he see that if he solves it by using Tashard, that it will jumpstart the offense? Barber has been unimpressive this year, and felix is looking more and more like another speed back. Both have been called by me as situational backs, and I stand by that asessment. If Tashard get’s a chance to run the ball for this offense, it will become effective, period.

wisdom to trying to establish a running game with Tashard. You may not see it yet, but I will remind you of what our offense does when it happens, don’t worry. I guess you didn’t watch him run the ball at the end of the year last year at all, right Foyesboys?

By the way, I’m not becoming anything, since I have really been saying these same things about the offense all along, and I’ve rarely read anything by Tex.

Dallas's problem establishing the run in this game was due to the OLine.

They were not executing at all. What mystical play call or personal package is going to compensate for flat out crap blocking up front? Answer; None.

I cant see blaming the run for this L

I totally agree they need to run better and establishing the run would do allot of great things. that said they owned the time of possesion and had everything in their favor untill the defense decided to give up huge gains. That play to jacobs is such a joke. the offense just marched down the field and you give it right back on one play! When they did attempt to run it went nowhere. Garretts not the one blocking.

The problem with that thinking Spree is

Your becoming one dimensional, and not gaining the respect of the defense with effective runs. There were alot of drives that were stalled by too many passes, even in the first qtr., and also Barber’s ineffectiveness is a hindrance to the offense. Even alot of 2 or 3 yard gains would have been the BIGGEST difference in a game like this, over the negative gains and stops in the backfield. Tashard would have made a difference in this game, trust me.

Disagree

Sometimes the defense just dictates what you can do. The G-Men committed to stopping the run after they got gashed in the first game against us, and they did a good job of stopping it. That commitment to stopping the run opened up the pass, and we lit them up for 379 yards. We just gave up a bunch of big plays, and that was the difference. I don’t even know why anyone is talking about the offense after they racked up 424 yards.

Not pleased with our run blocking but they made up for with our pass blocking. Giants played like a team on the edge but more importantly got the breaks.

I think the problem with Gurode, Davis and Flow is not that they’re bad it’s just that they’re extremely erratic and it can change week to week or even play to play. A few weeks ago they got Romo absolutely slaughtered in Green Bay with really poor play and this week the gave the Rb’s absolutely no chance.

Every year, the Offensive Line gets SCHOOLED by the Giants and Eagles. It’s BS. Romo had a good game, EVEN Roy Williams had a good game. Sheesh!

The defense looked like Junior Varsity High School. Terrible.

This team will not make the playoffs. AGAIN…

Oh and if they do get the Wild Card, they will lose…. AGAIN

I rarely agree with your posts

But I agree – if there is one unit which should take the majority fo the blame with our struggles against good teams…its the O-line.

Untill we find legititmate replacements (and Ive said this before), we will struggle to win games against tough Ds.

I mean honestly we needed an Aplus effort from romo to be in this one.

Although if the defense gets crushed this month, i may think differnetly.

This post is directed at you foyesboys

This team is not consistent. Period. That is the problem and has been, period.

by torchindefenses on Dec 6, 2009 7:42 PM CST reply actions

look at the D today

they were generally pretty good – but then would fail miserably. I don’t know how you fix that. They are a decent defense, but crazily vulnerable.

by I_miss_Switzer on Dec 6, 2009 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

i buy that

With the ol, it seems like every guy makes a mistake or two a game. A lot of times these mistakes end drives.

Our qb occasonally misses open wrs, but he does a much better job at most in hitting them.

Defensively….I’m not sure consistency is the problem. The Giants beat us this week the same way they did week 2. They pretty soundly beat us I thought.

Special teams were the biggest problem, but if that is the 1 game this year special teams hurts us, I would say that is good.

by foyesboys on Dec 6, 2009 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

But seriously

you’ve got to realize that every team struggles with this. The Giants, Eagles, Pats, Every team aside from the Saints, Colts and VIkings is struggling with consistency.

I made a point during the game thread

That the Giants D must have been tiring early considering Dallas’ lead in time of possession. Unfortunately, it seems to be a double-edged sword with the Cowboys — their O Line also begins to wear down the more they keep the ball.

Let's review for the record:

1) Abandon the run against a team you hung 250 on earlier in the year
2) Give up one special team play
3) Give up one long pass play
4) control the clock
5) move the ball (for the most part) at will
6) Lose

That about cover it?

we didn’t abandon the run. We kept running throughout and got nowhere throughout. The passing game was our only hope. If anything, I though Garrett may’ve forced the run once or twice.

And flozell was the backbone of an offensive line that was a main reason we went 13-3.

Barber maybe should get 3 less carries a game, but to say the signing was stupid is crazy.

that pass was easily 5 or more yards behind it. anyone with DVR will agree.

i can agree with you guys on the holding call on the Jacobs run. but there’s a little too much ref blaming, and not enough giving credit to us wanting it more today. IMHO.

Like Bulldog said, it’s very subjective. Warner made a left handed pass right into the ground tonight behind the LOS. It wasn’t called and there wasn’t a receiver around. It’s just whether or not the refs think it was a legitimate “try”.

about 4 yards short of the line of scrimmage – it was the definition of intentional grounding

by McLovin9 on Dec 6, 2009 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

qbs do that ALL THE TIME

I saw eli once or twice throw short at wrs in the pocket because he saw a defender breaking on the pass. Itwas about 4 yards short. That by your logic is intentional grounding.

Not saying I don’t understand the call, but they almost ALWAYS seem to give teams the benefit of the doubt.

by foyesboys on Dec 6, 2009 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

The Good The Bad The Ugly

Welcome to December folks. The Good: Romo, Whitten, Austin, R.Williams. Whitten is playing the best this year, Austin will be in the Pro Bowl, Williams is peaking at the right time and Romo did everything he could to win, absolutely played great. The Bad: Refs, Ware,Rat. Not making excuses but ref’s blew some calls. That so-call down play during kick off was a real game changing call. Ware, this nation turns it’s lonely eyes to you (Woo,woo, woo) Rat please step up and be the player that you are. The Ugly: Special Teams, Folk, J.G., Defense Coach Kangaoo and DeCamillis. NYG kick off return for TD= Game. Folk is choking bad we really need a good PK at this time of the season. J.G. and his pitiful game calling example 2nd and 3 Baber gets the ball for a 3 yard loss and stops the drive. GROW SOME BALLS WILL YA! (hope this doesn’t get me kicked out) This would have been perfect for a play action or a gutsy end-around plus where in the hell is F.Jones? The defense could not tackle a chihuahua today. Blame this on Phillips and the speacial teams on DeCamillis. It sickens me that we lost to the NYG twice this year and on both games DALLAS BEAT DALLAS! We have to win 3 out of 4. This team can do it. Phila have 2 tough games remaining @ NYG @ Dallas. Denver at home is no pushover. NYG has @ Wash @Minn home games against Phila, Caro. BTW I am so glad Saints won. When we meet hopefully they will be undefeated the the pressure will be on them. I don’t usually post only read(everyday) Sorry this is a long post.

I won’t give up, cause we have about 15 minutes left in this 4 qtr. game, and we’re still in it. In fact, we’re ahead. Just need to be better. These men are good players. They just didn’t get the job done today. They can do it. Will they. We’ll all be here to watch. Except for the koolaid drinkers.

Guy I'm not trying trying to be annoying but

you could say the first game Romo beat the Cowboys but today if Steve Smith holds on to a good pass in the Endzone and Eli does not float an awful pass in the third thats a 31-17 game before the Hixon punt return throw in the fact the officails for some reason did not assess that penality for the blaten cheap shot by Adams (He should of been thrown out of the game) at the end of the first half then you could argue the Giants fought the officails just as much. I’m Giant fan and still don’t belive in them but they were the better team today.

I think a Giants fan posted about this

He said that the refs assessed the penalty during the actual play so if the Giants had accepted it then they would have just extended the half. That’s why they declined it.

What about Flozell's pre-halftime melee?

Troy made mention of this and I also feel like Flo’s mini-brawl with half the Giants team definitely fanned the flame in the Giants, and they came out after halftime looking for the kill.

this team never has smelled right, i let myself believe but todays game was a

big litmus test. They showed they still need a new coach and new safetys and probably a few other players on defense. The offense is passable, 24 points 38 min time of possession and 392 in the air are good enough to win. Giving up 7+ yards to a glorified Offensive lineman is not. Reminded me of baltimore last year, when they gave up those long runs.

Romo had a great game tonight

but there’s something to be said that every time i see Warner or Brees see an open receiver, they put it right in the basket for a score.

Romo squeezes the tough ones in there, but isn’t quite as sharp when the other side totally busts the coverage

that Tony has confidence from his post game show interview he didn’t have that “I am crap” look. He knows it wasn’t him. They punished Crayton for his game changing crap turnovers, now they need to put Barber in time out, c’mon coaches let’s not be unfair about this. You don’t do your job and you put the ball on the ground and there are other options, no brainer for me. Barber not only fumbled at a most inoportune time, he keeps getting dropped behind the line, can’t all be on the line.

Sometimes the team seems scared. When they get a touchdown, they don’t get another one in their next opportunity. When they have the Giants near dead with two minutes left, they give up a smooth 14.

I just watched the nfl network Romo interview and Marshall Faulk and Sapp comments.

2 things, Faulk pretty much said that Romo should get advice from Brady Quin about how to handle interviews…seriously? and Faulk looks like he’s squeezing out a turd every time he speaks…is that just me?

The amount of misinformation the media is putting out there is a joke…they give inaccurate information and contradict themselves constantly…it’s annoying..

Here is the biggest problem with our offense

we only have one explosive player in the passing game, who is Miles Austin.

This offseason we need to add explosive WR’s to the team. And we don’t have to break the bank to do it. We could add someone like Malcom Floyd in FA and draft someone like Marcus Easley.

If Dallas is gonna be a passing team, then they need to load up with some options like the Cards, Saints, Pats, Colts. Romo can’t be throwing to big huge guys all the time. He needs quick guys too.

But Easley is like Austin

relatively tall and thick WR who can burn defenses with his speed and quickness. he is like a small WR in a bigger body.

But we need to win now, and WR’s take awhile to develop.

True, but it seems rookie WRs are contributing earlier in recent years.

Are you serious? The problem isn't this offense...aren't we ranked like 4th in the league? Been like that since Romo started.

The problem has always been the defense. That’s precisely why Jerry couldn’t fire Wade. Of all the high profile head coaches available, there weren’t any defensive masterminds. With all the high draft picks we spent on defense, I expected better. It’s maddening…they shut down the Eagles offense (which is more potent than the Giants) and then turn in this performance? Remember the Ravens game last year? They’ll play really well for 2-3 quarters and implode at games end.

thats why I’m not gonna get all pessimistic. We can’t make any changes now or anything. If we go 3-1, we’ll be in. 2-2, well likely be in.

No question it would have helped to win this game, but the point I was making was that I'm

“comfortable” that we’ll make the playoffs whether as division winners or wildcard. That hasn’t been our problem…yes we didn’t get in last year, but that was due to injuries…with Romo playing, we have the chance to make the playoffs every year, but can we actually do something when we get in…that’s the question.

And im not gonna lie, I despise the Cowboys and am so happy my G-men issued them a beatdown today cuz this was a must-win for the Giants and after the Giants dismantle the Eagles next week…(hopefully) the Giants will be right back in it and fighting for the division title. Eli completing 11 passes, and giving up 392 in the air isn't going to beat a lot of teams

ehh,, i don't know if we can go that far...

nobody “gives” Miles Austin a TD when he breaks their tackles for a score. we shot ourselves in the foot and the Giants kept reloading the gun for us and helping us hold it.

U gave us? thats pretty funny. Giants got a key block on Jacobs run and he flat out

out ran Spencer to the endzone while avoiding a tackle……which should of been made. Whenever you have a guy on the sideline you should be able to push him out. And on the punt return good blocking coupled with an amazing run by Hixon made that play. Give credit where its due man like me saying that I think Whiten is the best TE in football which he is. Dallas got outplayed today bottom line.

by giantsNYrangers on Dec 6, 2009 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

it was a pass play ur right. And turning the ball over will not win you many games

the strength that a team with some "elder-statemen" types is that they can motivate their teams to play in desperation

the weakness of a young team (and i would put the Boys in that category – though i could be wrong) is that no one steps into that role

dawkins did it to us last year. tuck and even pierce on the sideline did it to us today.

by bulldog jeeper on Dec 6, 2009 10:17 PM CST up reply actions

You saw Sensabaugh's attempt at a tackle on that Jacobs catch

And you didn’t saw the TE mugging him? That was such an easy call for a referee, that it’s mind boggling… Just like all the holdings that went uncalled against Spencer and Ware… There was a play were an OLineman almost snapped a shoulder pad from Spencer’s uniform… Absolutely awful…

But I’m not blaming the referees, missed calls happen in every game, it’s a shame that so many awful calls went the Cowboys way, but the mistakes from our team are the ones that cost the couple of games against your team.

True, but things aren't as simple

Roy Williams made contact on Webster, yes. But Webster made contact with Williams before Williams did his thing and Webster never let go.

No, if you win out and the Cowboys, Eagles, and Packers win out...you don't get in...again, you need help.

It’s hard for me to say this, but as a Cowboys fan, I’ve learned from the Giants that it’s not how you play now, but how you play in the end. We beat the Giants twice in 2007 and what did that get us? The Giants barely squeaked into the playoffs in 2007 needing a win over the lowly Bills, and then you guys run the table for the Lombardi trophy…

I’m pissed about the loss, but I just want the Boys to learn from it and improve.

by CaliFanInTx on Dec 6, 2009 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

just by definition

if we win out we beat the eagles

by a hay on Dec 6, 2009 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

You are very confused

Out of GB/Boys/Eagles/Giants

Boys plays eagle

Giants plays eagle

So if Giants and packers win out and boys beat eagles (eagles loses twice)

Boys and GB finishes 12-4 Giants 11-5 Eagles 10-6 GB/Cowboys and Giants makes the playoff

If Giants and GB wins out and Eagle beats boys

GB 12-4 Gaints/Eagles/Cowboys 11-5 GB gets wildcard

Conference Giants/Eagle 9-3 Cowboys 8-4
Division Giants 5-1 Eagles 4-2 Cowboys 3-3

The Cowboys miss out

If Giants wins out, either Eagles/Cowboys will miss the playoff, with the winner of last round game miss out

im telling you right now, Cowboys are probably the most talented team in the league

by far. i just think you need a better coach. No matter what happens this year i think wade is a gonner. especially with all the really good coaches available out there

by giantsNYrangers on Dec 6, 2009 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

Cowboys fans have been crying for a new coach, but who's available?

Holmgren, Shanahan, Gruden…all offensive coaches. Our problem isn’t offense. We need someone to turn our Defense into a 2007 Giants caliber unit. That’s why Wade is still the coach, because he’s the best 3-4 defensive coach available, but at the end of the day the players have to play well.

by CaliFanInTx on Dec 6, 2009 10:55 PM CST up reply actions

Wade's a heck of a DC, i like him in that role

but i doubt he’d stay on in that role if we brought in a new HC.

we need a mean MLB type who acts as a player/coach on the field demanding perfection from the squad… there’s just a shortage of those guys.

It's not that I'm saying we're due a playoff win, but I didn't have my license to drive when we won our last one...

by bulldog jeeper on Dec 6, 2009 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

Again, who's out there?

It’s easy to say fire the coach, but who’s the replacement? Don’t tell me anyone is better than Wade…that’s nonsense.

Here’s something to mull over…bring in Mike Zimmer as head coach. He’s a real ball buster and has a long history with the Cowboys and then bring in Charlie Weiss as Offensive coordinator. Zimmer is a great coach and even had the Cowboys ranked as the #1 defense during Parcells first year, and he did this with scrub talent and we know what Weiss has done as a coordinator.

by CaliFanInTx on Dec 6, 2009 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

i've got news for you...

i’m on your side of this argument. the reason he should stay as HC is that there isn’t a better Defensive minded option out there

by bulldog jeeper on Dec 6, 2009 11:13 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly...People think Jerry is stupid but he came to this conclusion last year.

I’m not a Wade fan, but who’s better? He won’t stay if demoted. Garrett is easier to replace.

by CaliFanInTx on Dec 6, 2009 11:17 PM CST up reply actions

2007 Giants unit was good in the playoffs...

…and so-so in the regular season. Very few defenses are elite every single game of a 17+ week season. Wade’s defenses have been in the top third of the league consistently, we could certainly do a lot worse than that.

I’ll agree that today the defense certainly bears some of the responsibility for the loss.

Larry Allen benched 700 pounds. That is Leonard Davis times two.

by Tim Wilson on Dec 6, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

my concern with the D

is that the reason we’re top 5-7 is because we’ve faced few legitimate offenses -one of those being the eagles on a McNabb off day.

The Giants have wrecked us both times.

Hopefully I’m wrong.

by foyesboys on Dec 6, 2009 11:37 PM CST up reply actions

True. you guys swept us in 07' but we won when it counted. With the help of Crayton dropping

a huge pass that would of def won the game for the Cowboys but thats why they play the games. Everything went right for the Giants that year. Not to mention a killer defense that yr.

by giantsNYrangers on Dec 6, 2009 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

The same thing that happened to you guys in 2007 happened to the Cardinals last year.

They didn’t finish like you guys did, but they came pretty close. The media has already put the Saints or Vikings in the Superbowl…when was the last time the top seed won the Lombardi trophy? I’m pissed about the loss, but too much can happen before the end of the season…the media is saying that the power is no longer in the NFC East…but it’s still possible to have 3 teams make the playoffs from this division.

why do you believe this team can do some damage in the playoffs? i mean most of us

hope to win. but this team is 1-4 against winning teams. everyteam we face from here on out (except for washington) has a winning records. Against teams in a must win situation (GB, NY) we are 0-2. Playoffs are a must win situation. Wade had NEVER won a playoff game despite taking over three playoff quality teams.

because the season isn't over.

And I don’t believe that the past always dictates the future. Sure Wade has never won before, but that doesn’t automatically mean this season will end the same way. (maybe it will, maybe it won’t, but nothing is certain) There’s still four games left to play. We’ll see how the team responds.

and if I’ve given up, then why even bother watching another game? why even bother reading another cowboy-related article or posting here? by Nelson... on Dec 6, 2009 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

Why do you believe otherwise?

In this age of parity only the truly “out of the freaking picture” teams still have hope to hoist the Lombardi trophy. All you have to remember is how the Giants won it by being the 6th seed, so did the Steelers. The Steelers get beat by the Chiefs, and today by the, uh, Raiders. We are in it, we are ahead, we’re playing at home next week, and the Saints almost got beat by the hapless Redskins. We can do it, and it just might happen. We’ll just have to wait and see, which I plan to do. I BELIEVE and will do so until it’s done.

Like his stint with the giants, Peyton was a one year wonder with us – we had no reason or desire to keep him.

by foyesboys on Dec 6, 2009 10:36 PM CST up reply actions

maybe, but could the cowboys have paid a promising OC like a HC to be "the guy" in waiting?

oh wait, we are.

?

my point is that we could have paid Payton and kept him as OC, and future HC. it’s the same situation we have now.

sure we wouldn’t have redball now, but that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing IMO. Payton can cultivate a QB. Redball hasn’t… (though i’m not sure he can’t, he just hasn’t)

i'm sure it was offered, but most coaches will take the HC job. I'm sure

jason garrett hates that he turned down the jobs he did to stay. now he’ll may never get to be a HC

peyton wasn't doing much for us at that time

people forget that. There was littl desire to keep him.

that new QB (#9 was it?) that he was grooming up was coming along quite nicely…

so without harping on a pointless point

payton left just as romo was about to come into his own… and his first attempt at garnering a QB for the saints was to take Romo – his prodigy.

if Romo developed that much under his tuteledge (i have no idea how to spell it), how much moreso now?

We only knew that AFTER he disappointed two franchises as an OC.

how many have we won with our respective coaches?

ask Giants fans or cowboys fans

how they felt about his playcalling after his first year with those teams. They won’t respond positively.

Dallas struggles against GOOD 3-4 defenses

You think the problems we had with Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, etc. were because of the scheme or because of the fact that they were abll top 5 scoring defenses at the time?

I’m gonna go with a little bit of both, but definitely more of the latter as being the major cause. San Diego’s not in that class right now.

Their defense is mediocre.

Aren't they playing a lot better recently though?

They have to be at least as good as GB’s defense.

You can't stop Patrick Crayton, you can only hope to contain him.

by APerfectStar on Dec 6, 2009 11:10 PM CST up reply actions

They just barely beat the giants and the eagles put up a ton of points on them

Offensively, they’re playing well but I’m not convinced their D is top 5.

Its a good question though as to whether its a problem with the 3-4 itself or just those specific units.

On the negative Barber comments...

I get that people are frustrated with Marion, and I certainly agree that he has been a less explosive back since his injury last year (and his YPC bears that out). So a certain amount of requests/grumbling for the other 2 backs to see increased snaps is understandable, and I made some similar comments after the Packers and Skins games.

That said, please consider the following:

“WHen a back runs for 3, 5, or even 8 yards, he usually owes the lion’s share of credit to his offensive line. But once a back reaches the second level— 10 yards and beyond— any additional ground gained is primarily a function of his speed, vision, power, and agility.” —quoted directly from Football Outsiders’ recent ESPN piece on Chris Johnson

Tonight, our failures in the run game were in that first level of yardage, less than 10 yards from the line of scrimmage (which includes BEHIND the line of scrimmage, where many of our runs ended). Yes, Marion seems less explosive, and I’d bet that he is below the league average in percentage of rushing yards gained beyond the 10 yard barrier (NFL team average is 20%). But tonight, that was not the issue— our offensive line did not succeed in getting success on that first level.

true

but we (and i’m included in this) KILLED JJones for dropping in the first level, where MB3 appeared to thrive. is it oline or back? could it be both?

It's not that I'm saying we're due a playoff win, but I didn't have my license to drive when we won our last one...

by bulldog jeeper on Dec 6, 2009 10:53 PM CST up reply actions

Sure, I think it's a little bit of both

But expecting a back to be SO GOOD that he can overcome bad blocking and make his own first level success is having unrealistic expectations. Some guys can do it some of the time, but it’s not sustainable.

I think the issue with JJ, and the one that we are now seeing with MB3, is a lack of explosive ability when he DOES get to the second level. Let me say again, that was not the problem tonight. However, I think it’s a legitimate gripe in general this season with Marion— he is not making an above average % of his yards on that second level. So yes it’s an issue, but I think we should just be aware that tonight, it was not the real problem.

Eagles vs Giants(This post is from my friend Katy; A Cowboys fan)

The only thing I’m hearing from all my friends is that I need to be a Giants fan during this match up. I cannot bring myself to do that, so I’m rooting for one outcome in that game : TIE.

no a tie is bad too

we want one of these teams to have a loss. If its the giants, we have a relatively good shot at finishing above them. If its philly, then we can be pretty sure the eason will come down to week 17.

-Insert reason why it was Romo's fault here-

just kidding, I blame this on the run and the Giants playing good defense.
