Winnie's Final Four

First, let me be sure to throw Tony Romo some love over his outstanding performance against the Giants. He clearly outplayed his counterpart, Eli Manning. He stood tall in the pocket and delivered the ball more accurately than he has in a month. Unfortunately, his team let him down on Defense and Special Teams.

Okay, so now for the post.

This game will remind some of last year’s loss to Baltimore. They’ll say the defense clearly wasn’t up to the task and that they couldn’t cover Steve Smith in the middle of the field OVER and OVER and OVER in the first half.  They’ll point to the long catch and run by Brandon Jacobs in the 2nd half. They’ll say those inside runs by Jacobs and bounces to the outside by Bradshaw were our downfall.

I disagree.

This was not the same thing as seeing LeRon McClain running through gaping holes against a tired, run down Dallas defense last year. No, this was just getting outcoached, out-prepared and (no surprise) outplayed.

These New York Giants played a desperate football game in the trenches and Dallas wasn’t able to match their intensity in terms of how they defended the middle of the field with Steve Smith and suffered another abysmal performance by the defensive line in key situations. In basketball, you look for the team who is diving for loose balls. In baseball, you look at who is taking out the 2nd baseman to break up the double play. This defense, and this team, just doesn’t know how to do that. It’s not in their DNA because finesse coaches like the ones on our staff just don’t coach that way.

The Offense, with its key fumble, and the Special Teams with their major flub against Hixon didn’t do the team any favors either. More examples of a fragmented team coached by a fragmented staff.

Let’s face it; we got beaten by a better-coached and better-prepared team. And that, my fellow Cowboys fans, is the reason this team is so limited in terms of what it CAN accomplish.

But for me, there is light at the end of the tunnel…

I believe we are witnessing the final run for Winnie the Coach. The final 4 games of another torturous run of undermined, gutless coaching staffs with absolutely zero cohesiveness. I’ve always been a fan of Wade the Defensive Coordinator, but never of Winnie the Head Coach. This team has been as soft as his oversized belly since the day he held his first training camp practice that involved 1 hour of stretching and 45 minutes of actual drills and game simulation.

I can see a new HC, a new set of coordinators and a new attitude for next year.

I don’t know who our next Head Coach is going to be. It could be another Dave Campo hire. It could be a retread like Gruden or Shanahan. It could be another college coach where Jerry tries to conjure up a Jimmy-esque type of magic one more time. Regardless, I don’t like Winnie. He does not represent the kind of football I want my Cowboys to play and if I have to endure another 9-7 (or worse) ending to see us take the next step, so be it.

So while I am certainly not phoning in the last 4 games of the season, I am realistic about our chances and I think this team’s window is still wide open. Now we need the right leader to help us take advantage of that window and get to the next level where Dallas wins games like these because WE are the better-coached and better-prepared team.

the defense and ST played bad

however we still control our own destiny and I have confidence the team will rebound and play well against the Chargers and Saints.

As I said in another post, the Cowboys 2009 December has yet to be written, I think it will have a different ending from past Decembers. I still feel good about this team.

I like Wade

But it seems like out team plays with no emotion. We need a coach who can lead who can give a talk at halftime to change things around and as much as i like wade and garret i dont see either one doing that.

This game has nothing to do with Wade, imo. The Barber fumble killed us, the in ability to run, the lack of real good pressure on Sheli, etc.

I think that we hit another team with there back against the wall and we paid for it.

I thought it was appropriate...

The running game was going nowhere and that stat was skewed down the stretch as we HAD to throw on the last three drives.

55 passes is mandatory

when your OL isn’t run blocking. Remember what the definition of insanity is, doing the same thing over and over even if it’s not working.

In case you missed the game. the OL run blocking was not working.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Dec 7, 2009 8:16 AM CST up reply actions

No

You have to commit to the run, not just when it works, but especially when it doesn’t.

No run, means no play action. No play action means no freezing LB’s. No freezing LB’s means more blitzes. More blitzes means more patterns broken off, fewer first downs, more three-and-out’s and more chances for the opponent to wear down our defense.

The Giants had ONE long drive all day on us (the big play to Jacobs). Other than that, Dallas will have to undertstand that playing field position games are critical in December.

The G-Men were not stopping the run well until THIS game. We gave up on it too early.

And that IS an identity.

"Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell but can't play football worth a damn."

- John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

by 5Blings on Dec 7, 2009 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

The 21 is skewed since the last three drives we more or less had to throw...

Plus, the Giants were absolutely selling out against the run and were obviously much more vulnerable to the pass. In football, you do what wins, and I think passing gave us a much better chance.

Also, I would like to point out that this was not a situation like GB in which both aspects were similarly not efficient and a lack of balance was more lamentable. Instead, this game had one aspect that was working and one that wasn’t. Therefore, in my opinion of course, JG made the correct decisions in what he was calling.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Dec 7, 2009 1:53 PM CST up reply actions

I understand your point

However, a case could be made for the last 3 drives not being so dire if the team had done a better job balancing the play calling.

And BTW, why so little Tashard Choice?

Dallas seems overly sold on Barbarian early in the games and I think it’s a big misuse of our stable of backs.

"Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell but can't play football worth a damn."

- John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

by 5Blings on Dec 7, 2009 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

you make no sense

You can’t establish the run with the way our Ol was blocking, absolutely no way.

If we would have tried to run it more, we would have gotten beat a lot worse.

Only teams with average to bad qbs to that, we have one of the best, need to put the ball in his hands as much as possible.

I will be PISSED if this happens.

Garrett can’t even put together a solid offensive plan week in and week out, but we’re going to give him control of the whole team? I won’t watch the Cowboys next year if Wade is let go and Garrett replaces him. I would rather see a guy like Bill Cowher come in. He doesn’t want a management role, he just wants to coach. He has a knack for surrounding himself with great football minds. His defensive scheme is the 3-4. All he wants is to bring in his own guys. Maybe he would even let Wade stick around as DC, if he would accept the demotion. If not then so be it. Let him come in and clean house on the coaching staff. Garrett isn’t cutting it, and Wade doesn’t have what it takes to be a championship caliber head coach. I’d like to see Joe D stick around too, but Garrett has to go, and if Wade stays it’s got to be as a DC.

Jimmy Johnson for GM.

by TXHC on Dec 7, 2009 3:35 AM CST up reply actions

I hate to tell you

but there is a very large possibility that you will not watch the Cowboys next year.

And honestly, I will pass on Bill Cowher. The guy has a ring, but the dude had a ton of breaks go his way in that run and I honestly don’t think he is an elite HC. In fact, just as many think Parcells benefitted from Belicheck, I think Cowher got a lot of credit that was due to Dick LeBeau and Ken Wisenhunt.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Dec 7, 2009 11:24 AM CST up reply actions

Like I said though

Cowher has a knack for surrounding himself with good football minds. I think Cowher is exactly what this team needs. Nearly everyone else that is out there (Shanahan, Gruden, Holmgren, Martz, guys like that) are west coast offense guys, and I really don’t think this team is built for that. Cowher is very defense and special teams minded, knows how to surround himself with good football people (ex: LeBeau, Whisenhunt, like you said. He hired both of those guys), and employs a no BS smashmouth football philosophy. He is too an elite HC and he has the track record to prove it.

Jimmy Johnson for GM.

by TXHC on Dec 7, 2009 12:51 PM CST up reply actions

I would think an elite HC would win a SB more than once

in the 15 seasons he coached the Steelers. Granted, that ring is a great accomplishment, but don’t forget that for a long time he was the guy who couldn’t get it done in the playoffs.

Also, like you said, this offense is built for a guy like JG who learned from Norv Turner and Ernie Zampese. I don’t think Cowher would come in and just immediately get someone as good as Jason Garrett (that second TD pass to Williams was all JG).

I think if given the chance, JG could be a great head coach. He, in my opinion of course, seems to be a no-nonsense guy who values accountability and has a lot of passion. To tell you the truth, I even liked the idea of hiring him as the HC straight out of Miami (if you go back through the Mickey’s Mail archives on dallascowboys.com, you can see that Mickey shot me down at the time). Lastly, with Jason Garrett as the head coach, I think getting a good DC wouldn’t be a huge concern. As a younger guy and a current OC, Garrett definitely has his finger on the pulse of the defensive circles in this league and I would be willing to bet that Jerry would let him have his pick (as far as $$$) as long as the guy was willing and available to come to Dallas.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Now if only we could find a DC as talented as Wade. He’s a great guy, but he has his pride. I’m pretty sure he’d be unwilling to take a step down and stay with the organization.

Give him another couple of years of seasoning as OC before moving him to HC. I was very critical of him last year, but his playcalling has improved greatly this year. Considering he doesn’t have even three years of playcalling under his belt, he’s making good strides. Problem is, Wade will be on his way out if we don’t make the playoffs this year, and if we don’t promote Garrett, we could well lose him to another team.

It's funny

Deion said today (and I don’t disagree) that this team has no identity.

As fans, we have even less! Sure, we’re fans, we don’t have to hang together as a roster — we’re all entitled to our own opinions.

But check out some of the statements made in the comments above!

- Some people saying we fire Wade. Now, I’m not a huge fan of him at all. I don’t think he has what it takes. But how many of us were mocking him just a few games ago when we were winning and our defense looked stellar?

- Hundreds of comments in other game threads today about how our defense sucks. Oh? Where was the suckage over the past few games. . .and where were those commentors?

- Our OL can’t block? Sure, they struggled today — but they’ve done bang-up jobs very often this year.

Chill, folks. Collectively, the fans here are about as composed as a 13 year old girl at a Jonas Brother’ concert.

We win this game if it weren’t for a few singular, critical mistakes. And if we had won, nobody would be freaking out.

by dfan77 on Dec 7, 2009 2:36 AM CST reply actions

December will decide Wade's fate

I see many positive things on this team that we haven’t seen on previous teams.

Even if we barely make the playoffs, the chance to get over that hump and get a win would be invaluable.

The defense needs to play much better to even consider keeping wade. If the Giants game is the entire next month, I am all for a regime change. But if this proves to be a blip, where we just can’t defend the giants and do a good job against SD, Washington and Philly, I’ll feel differently.

by foyesboys on Dec 7, 2009 3:16 AM CST reply actions

You are correct

There’s no way he survives without winning 2 of these last 4. Even if he does, hosting a wild card game is not enough. He likely won’t beat Philly in the finale (statistically, it is highly improbable), so that means he has to win 2 of the following; San Diego, Washington, New Orleans.

I think Romo has shown signs of development

So I am less worried about him faltering. If he has a bad game, he’s shown a willingness to take the sack or throw it away (hopefully to the line of scrimmage next time).

He likely won’t beat Philly in the finale (statistically, it is highly improbable)

What statistics are you going off of?

Seems to me that the Cowboys beat them in Philly already this year, but you are saying there are statistics that show that they can’t beat them at home a 2nd time? Oh, right. You are going to point to previous records and how they split in previous years.

Get out of the past and stop flippin out about the future, dude.

Reid didn't get to be 14-7 against Dallas by accident

Seriously, are you saying that you’d bet on Dallas in a game like that?

And why, exactly do you think this team is so much different?

It seems to me we beat them in the first meeting last year.

Does it seem to you that we often sweep them?

What was their record after 12 games last season?

Does it seem to you that we are in a much different place as opposed to last year’s record and December schedule?

I’m just trying to understand the fundamental underpinnings of your logic.

You're wrong

And I’ve said this before: it isn’t just about December. In fact, more and more, it looks like it is coming down to January (Eagles).

Do you really seriously think that — if we lose in December, but beat the Eagles in January (last game) — and make the playoffs — that Wade will be fired?

Let’s all just agree about what December technically is and is not.

Stop feeding the MSM frenzy by yakking about December when you can’t even accurately define it. They can’t. But that’s no excuse for you or any fan here.

Here is a quick and easy definition of "December"

Historically true

Cannot be argued.

Well, it can be argued, but not well.

we will get the needed three of four wins to close out

Arizona will lock up the third playoff spot (they currently have tie-breaker with us and have an easy schedule remaining). So it is likely that Dallas, Philly and NY could make the playoffs. If that is the case, Dallas (if they hold the division – which I think they can) will face either NY or Philly in the playoff game. To hold the division that will probably mean that we will have to beat Philly in the final game. So I don’t want to face them, because we all know winning three times against an opponent in 1 season is tough. So I hope we face NY in the first round and get our revenge for the season sweep, just as they did in 2007. We are the better team, and have lost both games (and the game in 2007) by beating ourselves.

I know, its long shot, but I am an optimist and its all I got. I do believe in this team. I think the D will be pissed against SD and I think the offense is clicking (Romo – Austin; Romo – Witten and Romo – Williams are all clicking).

Ever heard of GB?

Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Arizona.

They’ll likely be 10-6.

but its chicago on the road....

thats significant. As bad as the bears are…there is serious hate there.

And AZ COULD have some meaning to the cards, if the vikings lose again

But I agree – GB is the problem. Losing that game to them may be what keeps us out of the playoffs.

The giants played with fire and intensity yesterday

You can say what you want about X’s and O’s but I noticed from the first series that the Giants played like a team possessed while the cowboys AGAIN can’t seem to get fired up when it matters.

Romo, Witten, Roy and Jenkins played like studs but too many team breakdowns have the buzzards circling again. Maybe this will serve as a wake up call and the cowboys go on a run, maybe this is the beginning of the end AGAIN.

We will see but if this team chokes down the stretch again, I would not be happy with Wade OR Garrett at the helm. If this team fails to reach its potential AGAIN, I’m ready to blow up the coaching staff and start over.

I hope I am wrong and the fire Romo played with yesterday spills over to the rest of the team.

Why does the Winnie-coached team continually need a "wake up call"?

It's not all on the coach

If these guys don’t know what they are playing for, then no coach in the world will make them play tough. And as good as the giants looked yesterday, let’s not forget their 1-6 that put their season on the brink in the first place.

This cowboys team, playing to it’s potential, can beat the chargers, eagles and redskins to finish at 11-5. Playing the way they played yesterday, they’ll be lucky to win one more.

by Billito on Dec 7, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

They seldom play to their potential in December...

unless we just think their potential is better than it really is.

the funny thing is

people keep saying the cowboys have been imploding in december for so many years. Yey, at the same time they deride Phillips as if he created the problem. I for one think we had bad teams for many years. Its hard for a 5-11 team (three years in a row I believe under Campo) can have a winning record in any month. The playoff loss to Seattle was a fluke and spoke nothing of the toughness or preparation of the team and the playoff loss to the Giants was a couple mistakes here and there. the last two seasons our team collapsed under the weight of TO controverseys and yes, some sense of entitlement. None of this is to make excuses. Its only to point out that this stupid meme about the Cowboys cant win in December is stupid. It especially sucks when so called fans blindly repeat it.

It's repeated because it is verifiable

Why wouldn’t it get repeated.

That’s like saying, “Man, I don’t understand why people keep saying Wade has a goofy look on his face.”

or

“Brian Westbrook can’t stay healthy for a full year.”

Are the statements patently false? No.

My hope is the team will get tired of hearing it and DO something about it. Until they do, their performance perpetuates this tagline.

It’s no use saying it sucks when people say it. It is true until it isn’t.

Wade gets dumped on for being a softy

and for not having the Cowboys win in December. Basing that on results that date back from long before he arrived is asinine, and not “verifiable”.

People repeat things all the time without giving it any thought.

“Bill Belichick is a genius!” is one example. Is he really a genius, or are people in sports generally not very intelligent and not very creative?

So I am on the phone this morning with a friend who is going with us to Dallas for the Charger game

He’s one of a dozen or so in our group.

He has already started looking at the available hires and is thinking Stephen will push Jerry to go with a younger candidate or someone from the collegiate ranks.

He mentioned guys like Jim Harbaugh and Kirk Ferentz.

I’m not sure he isn’t right in assuming that bringing in a retread is the wrong thing to do.

Dallas may need a guy who can reshape the entire organizational culture in his own image. The problem with that is whether Jerry would hire the coordinators and/or position coaches again.
