Romo is the new holder
Wow. Let the jokes begin!!
IRVING -- A player who is still remembered for botching a hold for the Cowboys in a playoff game will get another chance in that role. After several missed field goals by Nick Folk, holder-punter Mat McBriar has been demoted and he'll be replaced by none other than Tony Romo.
McBriar has admitted to "lunging" while trying to spot the ball for folk. I'm not sure that's why Folk has missed so many field goals in the 40-49-yard range but the Cowboys are willing to try anything at this point.
Coach Wade Phillips stopped short of confirming the change Wednesday but strongly hinted that it would happen. And don't feel sorry for McBriar. I think he's thrilled with the change. He's never felt comfortable as the holder. Now he can focus on booting the ball 60 yards.

Exactly
There has never been a bigger shot at redemption – Romo holding for kicks and a late season game against Philly with the playoffs on the line.

i still think the slick ball had something to do with that botched hold...
so he’s 99% on holds for his career, i’ll take it
It's a damn shame that nobody really mentions how slick that ball was
I hate to sound paranoid, but I’m almost certain that was intentional.

huh
interesting. I guess McBriar was that bad, cause otherwise i doubt they consider romo
Not sure I understand the concept
They say (whoever they are) your franchise qb shouldnt be holding for kicks. Why not? There’s almost no risk for injury
theres very little
the bigger problem is that your qb spends an extra minute on scoring drives with special teams as opposed to thinking about his offense.
Not to mention in practice, in warmups, etc.

if by scoring drives you mean TD drives
then worse than that is drives that get bogged down and require FG attempts. Those are the drives he needs to be on the sideline looking at formations, talking to coaches and receivers etc.

if nothing else
we’re a folk miss away from going on it for more and more fourth downs.
Add that to the playbook, it would be nice to see..
Game is tied in the fourth, 4th and 3 and then Romo instead throws it to John Phillips giving us the first down… Nice

I like it!
Great move on Romo’s part. He’s seizing the bull by the horns here.

Thats one reason
I miss Johnson as the backup last year. Well thats the only reason cause he was a good holder on place kicks :)
I've said it before, Hire Johnson for the reminder of the season,
and all the Folk’s woes will go away
And if for some reason
Romo (God forbid) gets hurt in a game? I think that’s why teams don’t use starting QB’s as holders. Oh wow.
Always be more than you appear and never appear to be more than you are
At that point, wouldn't McBriar hold?
Won’t happen, though. Think positive. Romo’s pretty tough.

I don't think tdships' concern was who would hold in the event of an injury
I think he was saying who would throw the ball on offense.

It was obvious Folk didn't like Mcbriar's holds
Should be interesting to see how it works out.

Well, McBriar got thrown under the bus, so, as I said above, he had better not miss
any more kicks, or, at least, he had better make all of those chip shots.
mcbriar stated himself he
wasn’t doing something right. I am not sure how that makes him thrown under the bus. Its not fair to think he won’t miss another kick, but a change of scenery like another holder might help a bit.
"When people talk about Super Bowl dynasties they mention the 1970's Steelers, 1980's 49ers, 1990's Cowboys and the current New England Patriots, but nobody has dominated the Super Bowl like Anheuser-Busch. In recent years, Budweiser has been the MVP of Super Bowl advertising -- making another company the favorite to win the Ad Meter poll was never an option."

I think McBriar was taking the heat for Folks' yips. But I'd be thrilled to be wrong if
Folk stops missing.
I think its both of them
as they’ve been saying. McBriar has struggled recently, but folk hasn’t really been on all season.
Kickers get psyched out easily
Whoever was to blame, it was clear Folk was not comfortable with McBriar’s holds.

that is my one concern.
I know if I am ST coach, I am having my guy’s dive on the place holder.

how bad can it be? that would be like being tackled while already on the ground
and the guys who try to block the kicks will likely be smaller if they are that close.
seriously, when is the last time you saw a holder get hurt
while holding for a FG or XP??? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
In Romo we Trust
I have seen a lot of football in my decades on this planet, and I have never seen that happen
Worrying about the holder getting hurt on a play is about as realistic as me getting psyched up about winning tonight’s mega-millions drawing. Either could happen, and both are about as likely to happen

If I am picturing this right
his throwing hand will be away from Folk and he will be holding the ball (at the time it is kicked) with his left hand.
