Super Bowl open thread - Arizona vs. Pittsburgh
Here we go - Arizona vs. Pittsburgh in the big game. The Super Bowl kicks off at roughly 6:30 PM EST.
I'm rooting for the Cardinals for two reasons: I don't want Pittsburgh to get their sixth Lombardi and coach Ken Whisenhunt is a Georgia Tech guy, got to stick with my homeboys.
This is an open thread for the game.

Pulling for Cardinals for selfish reasons only! As Dave says,
we don’t want another team getting 6 before us do we?
Woo hoo
We finally won a conference game! We’ve lost so many close games it makes you sick, finally got one.
Arizone 28 Pittsburgh 24
Larry Fitzgerald wins the MVP, and Kurt Warner rides off in the sunset with two rings and a 1st ballot Hall of Fame lock.

GO CARDINALS
people have been doubting them all through the playoffs
but they keep showing up, i dont think the steelers offense will be able to outscore the cards offense with fitz and boldin
the 1 weakness in the steelers’ d is their corners, they’re good but not great so we might see some high flying fitzgerald action
"Aw Shucks" - Wade Phillips
yes, go cards
I hope I’ll make it to the half time show (like Sringsteen), but a 12h30 am start here is a little difficult when none of the team is the Cowboys :-)
Enjoy the game guys !
Bag the Steelers, Kurt
I’m not really into the game. But watching the pregame, I have 2 questions:
1. Why isn’t the pick with Bouldin and Fitzgerald illegal? If that isn’t an illegal pick, what is?
2. If that isn’t an illegal pick, why doesn’t JG run that with one of our big receivers as the recipient?
come on cards....
win the super bowl and then wipe that stadium clean with the terrible towel….
"They need security in the world, Craig!"
Go Red Birds
but my prediction is 27- 23 Pittsburgh.
Yo
anyone have an online site where I can watch the game?
ugh. bad start for the cards.

A minor consolation
This isn’t happening to the Boys. I wanted them to go to the Superbowl. But it would really suck for Pittsburgh to get #6 against us.
I;m having a Super Bowl party....
And two of the people here are Steelers fans. Is it even legal for a Cowboys fan to host Steelers fans in their house?

How could somebody who loves football so much and appears to be pretty knowledgeable be such a joke as a GM.
It is an amazing thing.
But I do like the dude… maybe it’s just impossible to win in Detroit.
Oh, wait. Forgot about the Deadwings
Will the Cards crumble now
I can’t believe Harrison got 100 yd return. That was an incredible play.

I enjoyed it
He’s a great performer, not a great singer. And hardly anybody sounds good in a stadium.
me too
I saw him in Paris last year and even though the sound in the stadium was as usual terrible, the show was great. The boss played for over 2 and a half hours. Worth your money, unlike many groups or singers who charge max and don’t even bother to stay for an hour and half on stage
The Boss of who?
I know the Super Bowl is still scared by the whole “wardrobe malfunction” and Springsteen is a rock legend… but the man is 59 yrs old and hasn’t had a hit for several years now. It might be time to bring in some younger talent that the 18 – 35 year olds can actually relate to.
Jonah who?
I’ve heard of them but never seen them perform… i’ve heard bad things though so I’d say no to them as well. how about T.I. ? edited of course.. haha
All halftime shows suck, IMO
Thats why you wait to use the bathroom, or reload on eats during the half.
I can’t ever remember watching one and saying, “Hey I’m glad I watched that.”

yeah but I agree with what Holmgren said - you have 3 shots at it - don't throw into the end zone
unless you’re 100% sure….even if all 3 plays don’t turn up a TD, you can still prob kick the field goal to tie with a couple seconds on the clock …that was hard to watch

Great play by Harrison
Horrible decision by Warner to try to squeeze that pass in. But even more incredible that the Cards couldn’t tackle Harrison for 100 yds. That was downright pathetic on their part.
T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003
Where were the skill players chasing him down?
Warner actually did a good job of taking on 2 blockers and slowing him down. Somebody should have caught him then. Hell, an O-lineman took a shot at him at the 10 yard line.
The refs are really going for Pittsburgh
Obvious tuck rule play.
I think that's the stupidest rule
the refs get it wrong twice, cards challenge and win both times and they are penalized by only getting one challenge for the rest of the game regardless if they get the next one right or wrong.
Cards better figure out some mis-direction plays
or Lebeau’s D is gonna bury them. Pitt D knows where the play is going before Warner does
DRC needs to pick one off
and take it to the house.
The refs must love the want the Rooneys to get #6
It’s a great team. They don’t need the referee’s help.
one-sided
is it me or do the calls seem to be a bit one-sided? Are the Steelers that disciplined or are the refs making a few bogus calls?
memorable commercial
since the game is beginning to really bore me i need to ask the question… has there been a memorable commercial this super bowl yet? The Doritos commercial made me think about smiling but I’m sure I’ll forget it by tomorrow.
These penalties are stupid
This is such a one sided game in penalties why did they even play if they weren’t going to give Arizona a chance. Its just like 3 years ago when Pittsburgh played.
i agree with Madden - throwing the ball deep is what has gotten the
Cardinals this far…i realize Pitt. is probably defending specifically against it…but for Warner to only have ONE pass for more than 10 yards? jeezus man – throw it deep down the sideline for Fitzgerald and see what happens – can’t be much worse than what they’ve done up to this point
by Loozeeana_Cowboy on Feb 1, 2009 8:17 PM CST reply actions
I wonder if Warner calls him "Ricky"
…proehl, that is…
conspiracy theory
odd how the penalty occured on a play where the Steelers wouldn’t actually be penalized, hmmm…..
I wonder if we could trade TO for Fitzgerald straight up ... keep dreaming i guess
by Loozeeana_Cowboy on Feb 1, 2009 8:23 PM CST reply actions
That was some trust!
Warner lobbed it. I wish we had a WR who could fight for the ball 1/2 that well.
is this a game now?
With Fitz finally getting into the game… do the Cards have a chance to steal the game now?
WTF!
They called it on Pittsburgh. I can’t believe it.
al michaels talking about a field goal - what sense does that make? they will have to have
a TD regardless in order to win….they prob. won’t get 3 possessions
by Loozeeana_Cowboy on Feb 1, 2009 8:40 PM CST reply actions
i mean i want 'em to lose of course, but just wondering if it's in their best interest...at least then they
could get a clean kickoff and pin the cardinals back further…compared to punting out of the end zone
by Loozeeana_Cowboy on Feb 1, 2009 8:44 PM CST up reply actions
Only 1 minute left to challengs
if AZ was going to take a TO, they should have challenged.
what a weird series of plays....the safety is much better than pitt. getting the first down play, but
really doesn’t do the cardinals a lot more good – they still need a TD
by Loozeeana_Cowboy on Feb 1, 2009 8:45 PM CST reply actions
they would have been better off with no safety, but break up that 3rd down pass play and make pitt
punt to them from the end zone

Harrisson is amazing.
Fitz....

The MVP is always about the best story anyway nto the best player. Many times the best player is on the losing team. Only one SB had that.
cards had it to win, their defense fell asleep at the wrong time. knew they'd cover though.

absolutely
absolutely, 100% with out a doubt the worst officiated game in super bowl history, and i am a cowboy not a cardinal fan
I would have to watch all the Super Bowls to say that, but that was NOT...
…a well-officiated game.
MVP??
Ben: 21-30 256 yds 1 TD 1 INT
Holmes: 9 Rec 131 yds 1 TD
Harrison: 3 Tckls 1 INT 1 TD
Warner: 31-43 377 yds 3 TD 1 INT
Fitz: 7 Rec 127 yds 2 TD
Refs gave it to them like the last one they won against Seattle
Holmes gets the MVP. Harrison lost it with the cheap shot personal foul.
Not a fan of Big Ben
But I have to give him credit. He is hard to sack, and when he extends the play, he seems to make the smart decision and move the ball. At the start of the season I would have said Romo over Ben, no question, but I don’t think I would say that now, unfortunately.
Some late calls on the Steelers evened up the officiating a little.
(Romo) still gets excited when he buys a new t-shirt at Target for crying out loud
i don't know man, we can't rely on our d to win games like he can...don't forget that he is a game manager
When the game was on the line
he had to move the ball from his own end and he got it done under duress. I think he is a game manager because he can afford to be, but he is also a pretty effective passer and scrambler. Even the pass out of the endzone on the safety play was clutch.

Just got here...
Sorry if this has been discussed but…
Was Holmes’ right foot down. i was thinking it wasn’t and my neighbor called me and asked me the same thing i was thinking.
Also – wasn’t that using the ball as a celebration prop? Isn’t that a penalty or only not in Super Bowls (sarcasm).
It was weird with all the camera angles
they have for the superbowl, they didn’t have a single ground-mounted sideline camera on the goalline.
Damn!
It would have been appropriate for Namath to hand the trophy to the Cardinals. This is awful.
Seemed like a sub-par production all around
I always love the pre-game fly-over; NBC showed about .5 seconds of it.
None of the commercials were interesting
If you have 58 cameras at the game, why not use them? Several plays could have used alternate angle replays.
Still waiting for some replays of the final Cards play…. come on. I’m still not sure that was a fumble.
if it had been grounding
do they run ten seconds off the clock?

I think I'm gonna be sick........
Why do I feel like Dallas just lost the super bowl?
Question:
On that 100 yard interception return just before halftime did anyone else see that HUGE block in the back at about the 30 yard line?
I don’t know if it could have been any more clear. If that would’ve been called, Cards win this game hands down.
Boy if I
did not know any better I thought this was a typical Cowboys/redskins game.
Where the only guy who could catch a ball catches it and wins the game.
Oh it was Santanio Holmes and not Santana Moss.
Either Way...
Cards put up alot more fight than I expected. They have heart. And Warner is a HOF’er. The defense allowing Pittsburgh to convert on 3rd and 16 isn’t his fault.
Poor Matt Millen
He picked 10 1st round wide receivers but missed out on Fitz, Bouldin, and Holmes.
Foot Not Down
Did you see the downfield view? Holmes right foot is behind his left heel and is NOT on the ground. From the view form above, it certainly looks like it is down, but it isn’t.
Think about it… If your left toe is on the ground and your right foot is behind your left heel, your right toes don’t even touch the ground unless your right foot is several inches longer than you left!
Harrison was the MVP in reality
He was responsible for a 14 point swing, causing 2 or 3 holding calls on Gandy, probably some other things I didn’t notice. One bone-headed PF and that negates everything positive? PIT would not have been in the game were it not for him.
Holmes had a good game, but come on. Not even close.
T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003
Holmes is a woman beater and a druggy
but the media has and always will love him because he is a Steeler.
agreed
I thought the two biggest reasons the steelers won were a. bens escapability and b. harrison dominating Gandy all night long, forcing multiple holding calls to stall drive and that truly ridiculous 100 yard return that had arizona in comeback mode the rest of the night. I feel like holmes’ game was a product of ben keeping the play alive forever.
I'd say the negatives DO outweigh the positives
Only because it was such a huge negative. It would have been wrong to give the MVP to a guy who committed such a blatant PF. That was a truly disgusting display. If he had been ejected for it (which I think he should have been), would his name even be brought up for MVP?
"When it's third and ten, you can take the milk drinkers and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time." -Max McGee
I was about to bring this up
Harrison’s personal foul, which of course did not hurt the steelers in the least, was absolutely dispicable. And was it me or did madden say after that that he likes harrison’s intensity? I couldn’t tell for sure because my whole apartment was screaming.
He should’ve absolutely been ejected after that play.
Madden said
He likes Harrison, likes toughness and intensity, but there is no place for that and he wished he were ejected.
(Romo) still gets excited when he buys a new t-shirt at Target for crying out loud
by I_miss_Switzer on Feb 2, 2009 12:31 AM CST up reply actions
I agree
I would have been very disappointed if they gave the MVP to him.
His blatant foul/disrespect for the other player to me disqualified him. Good that Madden stated he should be ejected.
On the other hand nary a word will tarnish the steelers as the media will overlook thier thug like tendencies.
I agree the PF was flagrant enough to warrant an ejection
I’m sure that is what took Harrison out of the official consideration for MVP. But in reality, his constant disruption and the incredible 100 yd INT return was far and away the difference in the game.
Holmes had a really good game, but he would probably be a distant 2nd, or even 3rd place behind Big Ben if you based it just on who made the difference in the game’s outcome.
Not that I really care about Harrison, just saying.
T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003
Damn Steelers
The Cards outplayed them, too bad they also made too many critical mistakes. Much better game than I thought it would be, aside from the final score.
T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003
was it that obvious that the last play was a fumble?
they didnt stop the game to review. It was obvious to me he had control of it moving the ball forward.
What the French?! Toast!
I agree, the play should have at least been reveiwed.

for using the ball as a prop after the TD, that clearly could have given Cards much better field position.

Faulk is the only football analyst to bring this up
Marshall was the only one who pointed out this, and questioned the " non celebration call"
Sure it may not have meant a difference, but who knows how the extra yards / potential better starting field position may have changed the outcome.
To me, just another example of bias shown by the refs.
They talked about it on PTI aswell
