Reflections on NFL History

After last night, I finally understand how chick-flicks make women feel.  I'll get to that in a second, but first...

Watching another team become "the most storied team in Superbowl history" has made me sick.  Both Superbowl teams in fact, made key Coaching decisions in the last three years that helped stabilize their respective ships in key situations.

  • Wisenhunt was able to bring a team that lost BIG in new england back to be a playoff force to be reckoned with.  Where was that kind of leadership after any of the Cowboys losses?
  • Tomlin led the Steelers through the NFL's hardest schedule, with its share of ups and downs all year.  Superior coaching in all 3 Baltimore games was the key x-factor.  Anyone out there confident we could have beat ANY of the teams in our division 3 times relying on Coaching to be the separating factor?

That Superbowl should have been ours, fellas.  If I had two x-chromosomes, this is probably how any of Hugh Grant's movies would influence me.  The Steelers just stole what should have been ours.  Thanks, Jerry.  You silly old moron.

I have to admit it....

This kills me to say, but I believe with how the last decade has gone, that you have to step back and realize that the steelers really are the best NFL franchise with us still a close second. Its our history that give us the ability to make that claim, and not the current state of the team. The cowboys are an embarrasment: to their fans, to themselves, to the history of the Cowboys, and to the DFW area. They have forgotten what it used to mean to wear the star. The steelers have not lost their identity. They are still the same gritty team they have been since the begining. We used to be able to stand toe to toe with them in claims, and i truly believe we will again someday. But until we right our wayward ship, we must give respect where respect is due. Shame on the Cowboys for allowing this to happen, and congratulations Steelers.

agreed

it sucks, but its true.

Although, to be fair, i think we’re a coaching change/jerry relinquishing power from retaking that title. All the peices are here, minus a few bad apples.

regardless, I feel like the steelers and cowboys are the two franchises that you absolutely know will have a a very competitive team with a legit shot at a superbowl at least a couple years out of each and every decade. I don’t know how many other teams can say the same.

which is why I’m not trippin too much that they have more rings now.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Agreed. It was hard to watch the Steelers take that sixth championship, when

I can’t help but feel that the Cowboys simply squandered their shot at it. At the same time, you’re right; the Cowboys just didn’t deserve it, and it’s hard to tell if the circumstances are going to change enough any time soon so that they DO deserve another ring. I can’t believe how low this franchise has sunk, and I don’t mean won/loss record.

Unfortunately...

we probably won’t be righting our ship until Stephen Jones takes over the franchise. Jerry, despite his burning desire to be a winner, just keeps getting in his own way.

Garrett needs to get a clue!

Jerry seems in good health

you won’t see that scenario for a very long time

I think it all comes down to Jerry

There should be no doubt about his want to win, but at times, his want to win caused him to make some pretty decisions in the late 90’s, i.e. trading 2 first rounders for Galloway. Honestly, I’d rather Jerry hire a football man ( like KC did with Pioli) and let him run the team as a GM. As much as it pains me to say this, in the time that we had Bill Parcells, our roster’s talent was severely upgraded from the group that Campo had. This all in turn helped build up to the 13-3 season in 2007 and to what was “supposed” to be the best team in the NFL this year (of course we know how that turned out).

Even though I've said it a million times

I guess I have to say it again. Jerry will never, ever give control to this team to anyone as long as he is alive or declared incompetent by a court of law.

So save all this talk of hoping Jerry will hire a real GM…it simply will never happen.

Which comes down to the point that

this team is not going to be successful if he cant loosen the reins. It’s funny how this team’s biggest success during Jerry’s tenure has been during times when he has had smart football people around him i.e. Jimmy Johnson

I think we all know that Jerry can’t do this forever. And as delusional as the mediots make him out to be, I think he knows it too. As big as he is with nepotism, that is, trying to hang on to people in the “Cowboys Family,” I don’t see it being too much longer before he relinquishes his death grip on the franchise in the way of someone (Stephen) who he’s clearly been grooming for the position. I think once Jerry gets his new stadium off the ground, so to speak, we’ll slowly see him kick his feet up and ponder retirement…

DUDE HE'S A FREAKIN' BILLIONAIRE!

You think he knows how to run a business. Probably a little better than you or I. I’m not saying he’s doing a piss-poor job as of late, I’m just a little more optimistic about this than others. It’s obvious he’s grooming Stephen to take over, I’m just saying it’s only a matter of time before he takes a step back…

by AikmanNailedMySis on Feb 4, 2009 8:54 AM CST up reply actions

what does he being a billionaire have anything to do with it?

Making millions in business has nothing to to do with running a successful football franchise. The fact is Jerry will always have final say regarding the Cowboys until he dies, that is a fact.

If you want to be delusional and think Jerry will someday give up control while he’s still living, thats you’re right to fantasize, but in reality, it will never happen.

Jerry is grooming to take over the Cowboys someday, but that day is when Jerry is buried somewhere six feet under.

A football franchise is a business. It's sad but true...

And how dare I forget that you are the final say on BTB and to disagree with the almighty Terry would make me delusional…

by AikmanNailedMySis on Feb 4, 2009 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

but they aren't run the same way

a football franchise can make money without being successful, the Cowboys are a great example of that.

Jones will always make lots of money off the Cowboys but the team hasn’t been successful in a long time.

Apples and oranges dude.

Jerry does not put winning first

I am so tired of hearing that “there’s no doubt or no question” that Jerry wants to win. Its not true. Jerry only wants to win on his terms, with himself as the GM. He does not want to win bad enough to fire the GM.

Comparing the two franchises

Eh, sentimental and little overblown. The Steelers took 18 years to get back

to the Super Bowl after 1980 (and it took them 25 years to win another one), so I wouldn’t go so far as to say they’re as consistently excellent as the writer wants to make out. I also tend to get a little resentful of the insulting comparisons between the cities; yes, I’m sure the people of Pittsburgh adjust their halos daily while the people of Dallas burn in hell. The main thing I agree with is the contrast between Jerry Jones and the Rooneys.

by Fernie67 on Feb 2, 2009 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

You're right.

I could care less about the sentimental portraits of the two cities, all i wanted to point out was the contrast between Jerry Jones and the Rooneys. That is dead on.

These things ebb and flow…

Fourteen years ago all the media rage was about how the 49ers became the 1st franchise to reach 5. At the time they were considered the greatest model of consistency. Just one year later Dallas tied them and then 10 years after that so did Pittsburgh.

For now, the Steelers franchise has more Super Bowl titles than anyone else with 6 but what is this same author going to say if 5 years from now if Dallas becomes the 1st team to reach 7? The Steelers always had those 4 super bowls from the 70’s to build on so of course they would eventually reach 6. They became the 1st franchise to win 4 in 79 after completing a run of 4 champions in 6 years (a record that still holds today). It then took them 16 years just to get back to the Super Bowl and 26 years to win it again. 26 years in between titles does not exactly represent the greatest model of consistency to me.

Compare this to the Cowboys who’s longest drought is 15 years in between titles, (at present they have gone 13 years without).

Right now both franchises can say that they have had two separate generations and eras in which they have won Super Bowls. Both of them had their great 70’s teams, while the Cowboys had the 90’s and the Steelers have this decade. With the right moves the Cowboys may very well be on their way to a 3rd generation of champions and be right back into a tie, with the Steelers, at 6, a couple of years from now.

0 = The number of Super Bowls the Eagles have won.

Just look at some of the other great teams from the past and how long they waited in between titles:
Green Bay won the 1st two super bowls and then waited 29 years to win it again.
The Giants won Super Bowl 25, (their second of the Parcels and Lawrence Taylor era) and then waited 17 years for another
The Redskins won 3 in the 80’s/early 90’s and have since been on a 17 year hiatus.
The Raiders won their 3rd in ’83 and have since been on a 25 year hiatus.
Miami won back to back Super Bowls in ’72 & 73 and haven’t won another since. That’s 35 years and counting.

0 = The number of Super Bowls the Eagles have won.

Rooney Family vs. Jones

Does anybody know how hands on the Rooney family was before they hired Chuck Noll and the Steelers started being good/great?

I'm not concerned with what the Steelers are doing.

I think the focus needs to be directed internally. You can’t just look at the champs and say “there’s the blueprint”. We don’t have the same players, coach, city, fans. It’s all different. The Steelers are champions because they got really good at being the Steelers. We’ve got to figure out what the Cowboys are good at.

There are a lot of ways to win. I want us to find out what our way is.

The Cowboys have traditionally won with great balance.

On one side there are the Steelers who have traditionally won championships by running the ball the majority of the time and playing overwhelming defense, (eventually wearing their opponent down in the 4th quarter). On the other side there are the 49ers who were almost the opposite, winning their championships with an overwhelming offense that put up lots of points early forcing the opponents into a one dimensional attack that couldn’t keep up. Then in the middle ithere are the Cowboys.

The great Cowboys teams of the past have won championships with a very balanced approached. Their best defenses don’t really stack up against the Steelers best D’s but the Cowboys have had much better passing attacks and overall offenses on their championship teams. The 49ers may be able to say they have had more impressive teams through the air but the Cowboys balance that by having better runners…

Oddly enough the present day Cowboys seem to have all the right players for another great team that is, "balanced". For one reason or another however the players don’t seem to be used that way and I personally put that on the coaching staff.

I miss when we were the Bad Boys.

Bad Boys have their problems, but they are always tough. This team is short on toughguys.
