The Cerberus Backfield

Our 3 RBs = Cerberus

For those not up to date on their ancient Greek mythlogy, Cerberus is the three-headed monster dog that guards the gates of hell.

Cerberus_medium

Star-divide

Marion Barber, Tashard Choice, Felix Jones

I feel that these guys are the key to our offense.  How do we best utilize them.

First, how do we distribute the carries in the traditional one RB formations?

I say we give Choice the start.  His natural shiftiness and vision are great for early in a game when defenses are fresh and anxious.  He can elude over-pursuit and turn sure no gains into 3 yards.  Give him carries early after halftime too.

Felix is the wildcard, he comes in on any down and any distance to keep defenses on their toes.  He can run and catch and is a home run threat every time he touches the ball.  Not knowing when or why he is on the field will drive defenses crazy.  Think lots of mismatches, blown assignments, and general over-concern for Felix, which will open up the playbook.

The Barbarian, The Predator, The Closer.  Marion knows he is designed to kill.  Kill the clock, kill the opponents will, punch them in the face and stomp their throats into the turf.  Throughout the game, he gets the must have yards: goal line, 3rd and short, 4th and inches.  When we get a lead or got their defense on their heels late, Barber takes over.  Give him the ball damn near every play and let him do what he does best - Close

With well defined roles, production should be maximized.

Since the running backs are so different from each other and yet still extremely versatile, I started to wonder can we get them all on the field at the same time?

This is my second question.

Can we play our 3-headed RB monster at the same time?  Here's the CERBERUS formations I got so far:

         ------------------------CERBERUS BACKFIELD SETS--------------------------

WR            LT LG C RG RT         WR

                            RB      QB      RB

                                        RB

WR            LT LG C RG RT  TE

                             RB      QB      RB

                                        RB

TE  LT LG C RG RT  TE

                             RB      QB      RB

                                        RB

These first three got QB in shotgun, next three under center.

WR            LT LG C RG RT           WR

                                        QB

                              RB                RB

                                        RB

WR            LT LG C RG RT  TE

                                        QB

                              RB                RB

                                        RB

TE  LT LG C RG RT  TE

                                        QB

                              RB                RB

                                        RB

Out of these alignments we would be doing a lot of running, screens and short passes.  If we got two wideouts think play action bombs to Austin or T.O. if he's still on team.  If we got a TE or two TEs think power running and play action short/mid-range passing game.  We can also shift to a 3 WR set easliy by putting Felix in motion out of backfield.  Barber could be a decent enough FB/lead blocker and allow even more versatility.

Isn't the goal to get your best players on the field as much as possible.  There is no debate that these guys are our most consistent and talented offensive playmakers. So lets get them on the field and give them the ball.

Now I haven't really considered defenses counter-moves so I leave that up to yall.

I love it.

In Madden 09 I use the run ‘n gun playbook which has all 3 backs in at once. I put Barber at FB as well so I can audible between who runs the ball and playactions etc.
I definitely agree on Choice being the more constant ball carrier in the game. He’s proven he can start, he got 88-91 yards against the best defenses. Mix in Felix and let Barber close out; now we have a very potent running game. Plus we also have Tony Romo, this will take alot off his shoulders and open up the passing game even more.
This is one of the things I’m really excited about for next year.

Awesome name!

I was going with Bash, Slash, and Dash but Cerberus beats the holy hell out of that lol literally.

by NDCowboy8 on Feb 21, 2009 4:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Bash, Dash, and Tash

I like the formations though. Parcells ran some of that stuff, just with tight ends in the backfield in the up positions.

Great post

I think your definition of their roles is dead on. I would rotate the backs exactly as you suggest. I hope the coaching staff starts Choice, finishes with Barber, and has Felix on the field the whole time (two fourth round gems tossed with a little WOW factor). I predict the coaches will give Barber the start and the bulk of the carries again.

I think Barber will start but I think the coaching staff will split carries pretty evenly between him and Choice

I don't think this coaching staff will use them.

I predict that barring injury, Choice gets less than 5 touches a game and Jones gets less than 8. Look for Romo to continue throwing the ball 35 times per game and for Barber to get 15-20 carries and rarely break 100 yards.

agreed

we have been given no indication that there will be meaningful changes such as the ones suggested in Chad’s post.

All depends on Garrett

We will get to see if he is the “genius” or the idiot this year.

Health is also a key issue

The two 100-yard games Barber had in the 08 season were the 2 games Kosier played.

True

But Holland showed me something this year, which leads me to believe that it was less of Kosier being a linchpin than it was Procter being utterly awful.

Cool concoction; I would love to see an aggressive offense predicated on the run, but...

Doesn’t Garrett pass and pass to set up the run? While Choice certainly has made a case for more playing time, was it enough to either supplant Barber (who starts because of his pass blocking skills), or to prompt a shift from this paradigm? I don’t think so. Choice’s development could garner him more touches but Barber is paid to start.

However, change is the Zeitgeist and if Garrett’s schemes have so quickly become pedestrian and predictable, maybe it is time he gets swept up in the spirit of it.

If you are beating a dead horse, you might be a Cowboys fan.

What I feel the problem with Garrett is...

His first year he was awesome cuz he put so much effort and time into it…This year he was regarded as a genius and probably didn’t go at it as hard as his first year and the first 3 weeks of the season when we started off we were hot which boosted his confidence more making him overconfident, now in his third year he is gonna have to bust his a$$ again, which will in turn make our offense effective again.

by nicholas.rodriguez on Feb 22, 2009 1:59 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

he "probably didn't go at it as hard"?

I’ve been quite critical of Garrett, but if that’s your premise starting out, I think you’re going in the wrong direction.

I love the post.

As much as I hate to say it, the greatest value Choice might have for the Cowboys is as trade bait. He is VERY tradable from a cap perspective and he’s clearly shown enough on the field to interest a team who maybe has an extra FS or ILB sitting around collecting dust.

by StillHateTheGiants on Feb 23, 2009 8:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

its really stupid to trade RBs and CBs

because you can never have enough good ones on your roster. If Jerry is smart, he’ll keep all three because as last proved, we needed all of them to compete.

What is really stupid

Is having blind devotion to a person or idea and closing your (limited ) mind. Surely you can appreciate that. So you’re saying, it’s “stupid” to have 3 starting quality RB’s on your team, one who will get 3-5 carries at the most when you could possibly trade him for a starting quality player in a position where you have critical needs. Brilliant.

by StillHateTheGiants on Feb 23, 2009 8:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, if MB3 and Felix

get hurt again, that back who you say is getting only 3-5 carries is now our feature back..yes, brilliant.

I'd hate to lose Choice...

Last year proved the value of having 3 quality running backs. Personally, I think Choice is special and his play against some of the best defenses in the league bears this out. Trading him might wind up in another Jimmy Smith type scenario where we’d wonder a few years from now “how’d we let him get away???”

I agree with starting Choice and have suggested that in other fanposts. I’d use Choice on 1st and 2nd down with Barber occasionally coming in at fullback for a quick opener. Barber’s main role would revert back to what made him famous, 3rd downs, short yardage situations and as a 4th quarter closer.

Felix is your X-factor. He can come in with one or both of the other two in the game to give the defense something else to worry about. You can motion him or put him in the slot. Swing passes or reverses… the mind boggles at the possibilites.

Imagine a variation of the wishbone formation behind Romo… Barber at the fullback position with Choice and Felix as the two halfbacks. Run a play from that set or send one of the backs in motion either throwing to the back or running away from the motion.

Garrett needs to get a clue!

by BulletBob on Feb 23, 2009 12:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I would hate to lose him too

He is really talented, I think potentially better than Barber. He will probably last a lot longer too. Unfortunately, his contract makes him the most tradable. Dallas has too many glaring needs in other places to not extract the value out of an over abundance of RB’s.

by StillHateTheGiants on Feb 23, 2009 8:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

thats truly an oxymoron

over abundance of RBs…no such thing

by Terry on Feb 24, 2009 9:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

My biggest thing...

We say Felix should be limited on KR because the potential for injury. If we keep Choice (and we definitely should), the risk doesn’t decrease, but the impact of a potential injured Gato greatly decreases. From what I’ve seen, which is limited, Felix is by far our best option on returns. He and Miles, who is way too frail to return.

One question I had with the first three formations: Is the third running back behind the QB, who is in a shotgun set? Because wouldn’t that put him 9-12 yards off the LOS? Or would he be next to Romo?

Maybe

we could run some form of the wishbone. I always wondered how Romo would run the option

I like the formation just don't give Romo an option to keep it.

Use Barber at FB in this formation. Either fake or give to him up the middle or immediately pitch to Felix or Choice going wide.

Garrett needs to get a clue!
