Focus where the draft is deep

Following the laws of supply and demand, I'm a fan of picking players in deep positions.  You seem to find bargains that way, as other teams fill needs rather than picking the best players.

I've studied the players a bit this year, and as much as I want a safety, to get one, it seems that we'll have to pick a safety a round too high.  I like Rashad Johnson, as I'm a production guy, and he makes plays.  Who cares if he ran a 4.6 or a 4.5.  Courtney Brown runs a 4.3 and he blows.  However, Johnson seems like a 3rd maybe 4th round guy, and I don't like picking someone who is too small and a bit slow in the 2nd.  But with this weak class of safeties, my guess is that he'll go higher than he should.

I know we really need a good safety, but you can't make wine out of vinegar.  Lets get a veteran to cover us for another year and hope next year's draft is deeper.

I've come around to picking a center this year, as the class is deep.  At first I dismissed it, as we have Gurode, a young Pro Bowler.  However, he seems to make a lot of mental mistakes, and since the center is the mind of the o-line, it wouldn't be bad to have him move to guard.  A guy like Alex Mack is intriguing, as he could play guard as well. Let him provide depth for a year, see how he develops, and if needed make room for him at center.

The NT class is odd, as only Raji and Brace are first day talents, but you see a lot of mid/late round guys who are interesting.  Sammie Lee Hill and Dorell Scott lead the list, and guys like Terrance Taylor and Chris Baker could also fill the need.  That's more guys that usual with the right body type to play NT available.  I say we pick one, maybe even two, on the 2nd day.

This also seems like a good year to pick up a burner at WR somewhere late in the draft.  Mike Wallace, Johnny Knox and Mike Thomas all would be intriguing if we got them late.

Here's what I'd do:

2nd round(in order of availability)

William Beatty - probably will be long gone, but he seems to be the last legit LT prospect of this draft  - having Flozell near the end and not a sure replacement on hand worries me - remember Torrin Tucker manning the LT?

Duke Robinson

Jasper Brinkley

3rd round

Brinkley if he's still there

One of the center prospects - Mack, Wood or Luigs

Rashad Johnson

4th round

One of the centers if we didn't get one before

Rashad Johnson

Sammie Lee Hill

Scott McKillop

Dorell Scott

I'd love to come out of the draft with Duke Robinson in the 2nd, Jasper Brinkley in the 3rd, a top center who slides and Sammie Lee Hill in the 4th, then sprinkle in some late picks like Jason Watkins, Johnny Knox, Frantz Joseph, Terrance Taylor and a developmental QB.   I'd love to grab a developmental 3-4 DE and 3-4 OLB as well, but I haven't seen many intriguing prospects there.

Thoughts?

Lawrence Sidbury as a DE/OLB but didn’t grab a DE cuz I want Rat to move there to take over for Canty…

if we pick two NT we can assume Rat would move

2 NT in the draft and grady jackson for a veteren saftey net and your Dline needs are filled

I like that idea. Jackson is a lil old so either him or Gabe Watson, who is a serviceable backup. Just let all 3 NTs compete with Siavii for the 3 spots.

what was gabe watson's tender

he is young and would be great but i think he may have been tendered pretty high. do not know. I wouldn’t want to give anything higher than a 4th, he was not vene active for the first 5 or so games last year. if they let him test the free agent market without a tender we should definitely grab him, even if it is at a cost. but yes i really like the idea of throwing 3 colutions to our NT issue and just be satisfied with Rat, Spears, Bowen, and Hatcher on the edges.

watson and two picks amoung terrance taylor, sammie lee hill, and other late round NTs would be optimum, but i would settle for grady instead of watson and the potential of the two picks no problem.

GB- NT-Colin Cole fits the bill...6'2" 330lbs.

Should be looked at to compete in camp, and should be relatively cheap…

I am in complete agreement

As evidence, the draft was deep in CB’s and RB’s last year and we ended up 2 each, and all 4 were absolutely fantastic.

Everyone says that FA impacts how you draft. I say there should be some thought to the reverse. Let the draft pool impact your FA moves.

We are in desperate need of a safety, but there doesn’t look like too many available in the draft. So, plug the hole with a short-term FA, and let a safety fall to you in the draft. Don’t reach. Next year, try again in a draft that looks like it might be rich in safeties. And who knows, the lower round safety you picked this year might be a gem AND your FA signing might thrive.

Fair enough

But his age and potential contract are prohibitive

I would love to have him and think he would be a great role model for young guys to look to for work ethic and film study habits but he will get offered a little too much for my taste. A few guys out there are Sean Jones, Mike Brown, and Darren Sharper is another old guy that might want one last shot.

Mack, Wood and Lugis

will be long gone by the time we pick in the 3rd, they might not even be there at 51.

Wood will be there

Luigs probably gone.

Sadly for Dallas, Mack will go earlier in Round 2. THIS GUY IS A JIM OTTO CLONE!!!

Okay, now I am gonna go drink.

I don't know about Wood

I’m predicting a run on centers early in the second rd

You're assuming a lot of these players will fall a long ways...

Not much of it is likely as you have laid it out.

I agree on Johnson

I don’t think he lasts past the 2nd because of the dirth of safeties available. However, if I’m picking, he becomes interesting to me in the 3rd/4th. He reminds me a bit of Dat Nguyen, in that he had great production, but there were big questions about his size/speed. I personally like those types of players, as I value production over measurables. However, like Dat, they are good picks in the 3rd/4th round, not the 2nd, where you can get both production and measurables.

As for the centers

I agree, the might not last till the 3rd or 4th rounds. But you never know, its a deep class. Reminds me a bit of how we got Witten in the 3rd when he was supposed to be a high 2nd. It was a deep TE class and he slid farther than he should.

with deep classes there will always be a few that slip through the cracks.
