Cowboys are Shopping Roy Williams (S)

From Rotoworld:

"The Cowboys are reportedly shopping SS Roy Williams in trade talks.
Williams will likely be cut in the likely event Dallas can't find a taker. The coverage-challenged safety's release would save over $2 million under the cap and $4.4 million in cash. It's worth noting that if Williams is moved we won't have to refer to the other Roy as "Roy E." anymore. - Fox Sports News

If it saves us money, and saves us cap space, I wont feel regret parting with him, especially if we can get some sorta pick outta him.

still kinda new here ...

what exactly is the difference between a FanShot and FanPost?

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Here u go.

FanPosts and FanShots

    *

The FanPosts, in the top box on the main page’s right sidebar, are the place for you to share your thoughts. Rant and rave to your heart’s content, but please keep your words clean and your debates civil. Every so often, the site’s Contributing Editor, erivera7, will feature a FanPost on the main page. Note that FanPosts aren’t the place to merely drop a link to a cool story/video/photo you’ve found. That’d be…
    *

The FanShots. They’re a little further down that right sidebar on the main page. FanShots are your place to share links, quotes, images, videos, lists, and chats.
    *

You can recommend individual FanPosts and FanShots by clicking the recommend button, which looks like this: . Recommended FanPosts and FanShots will be bumped to the top of their respective sections, under the “Recommended” heading.
    *

When writing a FanPost or FanShot, make sure to tag the players, teams, and games you’ve mentioned. The tagging system is fairly self-explanatory, and will help keep the site well-indexed.

Ham...I believe your soon to be relieved of your duties

This most definately a FAN POST. This is exactly what I like to read when I log in.

As opposed to 10 seperate posts rehashing the same theme.

I love the Ham

But breaking news this big deserves a fanpost even if it’s short on words.

I think that is the best news I have heard all off season if true

1) it would mean we are defintely going to either drat or sign a free agent to replace him

2) also would mean we wouldn’t have the EXACT same team last year which gives me as a fan a little more hope for next season as opposed to us doing absolutely nothing up to this point and feeling like we are destined to repeat last year….

I never post on here but I needed to get that out!

by WALKERMAN on Feb 26, 2009 3:01 PM CST reply actions

Best chance to trade to him is going to be after some of the safeties start signing in free agency. The teams that miss on them will interested in trading for him. Not sure how much he would be worth though.

by jack dein on Feb 26, 2009 3:02 PM CST reply actions

I think the Browns need a safety

maybe we could trade him to them for like a 5th rounder.

by quincyyyyy on Feb 26, 2009 3:11 PM CST reply actions

with wilson gone, is there really anybody else better available? im just not beleiving that henry can do the job

by DavidLaFleur on Feb 26, 2009 3:34 PM CST reply actions

If Anthony Henry is moved to safety

it’s most likely free safety and Ken Hamlin will move to strong.

Agreed

…and I think that is exactly what is going to happen. This also changes the dynamics of the CB spot. Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick are a solid trio, but they will likely need another vet (2nd tier guy?) and a young safety to groom for the future.

by Wmillion on Feb 26, 2009 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Roy is not going to get alot of looks....

He is going to have to revive his career as a LB. They were talking about this tonight on Sirus Radio. Every GM in the league knows Roy is terrible in space and won’t sign him, at least not as a starting safety. His best chance is to add some weight and play LB. The position has changed and Roy doesn’t fit todays mold as a safety.

by Boyzfan94 on Feb 27, 2009 12:55 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

I’m not too well versed in the Raiders or GIants, but didn’t Gibril Wilson play free safety?

Guess it doesn’t matter either way. He’s off to Miami…damn it. Dawkins or bust, if we’re going the FA route to fill the need at safety.

Shaun Springs would make for a good FS..

Just released by the Washington Redskins…and can probably get him for half what we’re paying Anthony Henry.

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 27, 2009 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

Wouldn't that be deja-vu with his Dad?

Plus maybe he could move in with TO since they are friends-lol

by texstar on Feb 27, 2009 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see anybody trading for him.

Lets just take the extra 2 million under the cap.

by houseofprime on Feb 26, 2009 7:43 PM CST reply actions

This makesw no sense

Nobody will give us anything because we are just gonna release him anyways and then they can sign him for less than his current contract and not lose anything else

by rioplayer7 on Feb 26, 2009 7:44 PM CST reply actions

i disagree..Teams who trade for him would only be on the hook for his base salary amount...

I realize a bunch of haters on here may not feel this way…but a team would be getting a 4 time pro bowl caliber strong safety at a very reasonable base salary of $3.7 million per year. Less than half of what Gibril Wilson is making, and he was let go by two teams in the past 12 months….

A team in need of a Safety surely would/should be interested in aquiring a guy like Roy Williams….I know us Dallas fans are upset and tired of seeing Roy, but look around the league, and if anyone here can name 10 better strong safeties….i’ll give you a cookie…3.7 million is a deal, and we should be able to get a 4th-5th rounder at least….possibly a 3rd rounder. ummm….Houston just got rid of two safties…in the market ?? Oakland likes the renegade, tell AL it’s the ghost of Jack Tatum?? Baltimore may have interest, the Jets, etc. etc. etc…

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 26, 2009 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Good reason right there

It would be really nice to get a 5th instead of just cutting Roy.

by APerfectStar on Feb 26, 2009 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree nobody wants this guy his only skill set in hard tackling is diminishing and he is terrible in coverage

He is not worth 3.7 million and a draft pick in my opinion but I guess we will just have to see. I think we will just end up releasing him and hopefully we get Dawkins.

by rioplayer7 on Feb 27, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

Roy's Departure

I think that Roy has contributed to the Dallas Cowboys but his time has past. I don’t think that contributes on special teams and his salary is far too much for a part time safety.
Henry might be able to play FS but even that would be a temporary sol’n to allow us to
draft someone. Keith Davis is a great special teams player and his enthusiasm makes him a great back up but I don’t think he’s a starter either. I had hopes for Pat Watkins but
it sounds as though his neck/back are going to make his NFL career iffy at best. Ball might possible be an answer but I’m not sure he should be the only alternate.

by Boyz 2006 on Feb 26, 2009 7:48 PM CST reply actions

his stock is at its lowest point ever right now

good luck finding any takers.

teams with even half-brained front office types know they won’t have to give up anything if they really did want da thong.

it’s probably one of the worst-kept secrets in the league.

Roy is not going to get many looks like some think….his weakness and flaws were exposed a long time ago. He will not be a starting safety in this league anymore.

by Boyzfan94 on Feb 27, 2009 12:58 AM CST up reply actions

I dunno'

It’s supposed to be a very unimpressive class for safeties in the draft this year, and as it’s been said, Roy is actually one of the better strong safeties on the market right now. Guy’s not that great playing the pass, but he was still pretty impressive against the run, when we last saw him on the field.

The only thing that would prevent teams from trading a 4th or 5th for him is the fact that it’s obvious Dallas is going to cut him. He’ll end up on another team, and may actually be a bargain.

+1....

I’m not defending the guy but we better have somebody else lined up cause Keith Davis and Watkins can’t cut it.

by texstar on Feb 27, 2009 9:29 AM CST up reply actions

Anthony Henry

would make a good FS, he’s a ballhawk and he won’t have to cover as much like he did at corner. Ken Hamlin should be a great SS because he is/was known as a hard hitting safety and him and Henry both lead the team in interceptions in 07, this would solve our coverage issues at SS. But, drafting safeties should also be a top priority because Henry won’t be around for more than another year or 2. Keith Davis is a solid backup but really just a poor man’s Roy Williams. Pat Watkins hasn’t shown me anything I’m impressed, he’s a weak tackler, they call him slinky for a reason, and he isn’t much better in coverage.

Tra Battle should be kept as well as a backup and for special teams. Like Tashard Choice and Orlando Scandrick, Battle was the type of player who gave 110% on every play. He isn’t the best safety but he’s solid, he’s smart and he has fire. There’s nothing wrong with keeping him as a backup, he played pretty well filling in for KD.

I wonder if

any teams that run a 4-3 would have interest in him as a a weakside linebacker.

by jack dein on Feb 26, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

Or because a 3-4 isn't a good fit for him as a safety

by BigDinSC on Feb 26, 2009 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

He’s not a good fit in Dallas anymore. As far as trading him it’s hard to judge what a safety is worth because not many are ever traded. The closer it gets to the draft the more likely it is that he gets traded. I could see him as a draft day trade that allows us to move up somewhere in the draft. Packaged with the first pick of the 4th round he could probably get us into the late 2nd.

by jack dein on Feb 26, 2009 11:10 PM CST up reply actions

yeah....that's the hurdle..i don't see him being traded....just throwing it out there..

turns out Rodgers was just being a little baby because he felt disrespected cuz new coach Mangini didn’t go out of his way to acknowledge or welcome him, or say hello….It’s blown out of proportion…but you never know…cap hit is one thing….but they would actually save over 6 million in more money being handed out for a unhappy player…They need a SS, as Sean Jones is actually worse in coverage than Roy, and giving them a 4th would let them recoup a pick they gave uyp for Rodgers in the first place..
