Free Agency Quick Hits -- Canty, Scott, Lewis
I have a lot of posts to reference, but not much time, so I'll simply give the source pages. Sorry for leaving out the usual links.
-- Chris Canty will visit the Redskins later today, according to the Washington Post.
-- The Miami Herald quotes Canty's agent that he's not likely to land in Miami, even though 'Fins GM Jeff Ireland helped draft him.
-- The Carroll County Times (MD) says the Cowboys are likely suitors for both Ravens ILBs Bart Scott and Ray Lewis. The paper says the Ravens made massive last-minute offers to each that would serve as benchmarks for the Cowboys -- 3 years, $24 million for Lewis, with $17 M guaranteed and a longer-term deal averaging $7 M a year for Scott.
It's hard to believe Lewis would get a richer deal given that he's five years older than Scott, but it's not my money.

From Albert Breer
"Canty has four visits scheduled over the next few days.
He’ll kick things off in Washington with the Redskins on Friday.
From there, he’ll go to Tennessee on Saturday, Seattle on Monday, and San Francisco some time thereafter. That’s provided, of course, that a deal isn’t struck first."

Albert Haynesworth just signed a reported 7 years /100 million, and DeAngelo Hall for 6 years / 54 millions contracts with the Washington Redskins
I highly doubt they have any money left over for Chris Canty.

Rumor had it that Canty was merely a fall back option just in case the Skins couldn't land Stompworth

I see Canty ending up in Green Bay
I would have thought Denver…and he still might have interest there, but Denver is on a spending spree and don’t know what they got left for money…..they are the ’09 addition of the Oakland Raiders…..

So the 4-3 teams plan on playing Canty at DE or DT?
Also I can’t believe Deangelo Hall got another fat contract, 22.5 million guaranteed. I guess Snyder still hasn’t learned.

snyder builds nothing and just starts anymosity in the locker room with the crazy contracts..they never have “teams” just “tiiiiiiiiems.” hall isn’t worth 1/2 that.

I'd totally take Scott
over Ray Lewis. He actually plays the same position as Zach Thomas/Burnett. Makes more sense to me, plus he’d be more of a long term investment.
That said, all that really matters to me at the moment is getting Ware locked up. That has to take priorities over signing any other FA, no matter if it’s a position of need or not.
Epic Fail since 1985

I totally disagree with Ware being our main priority...and here's why
First off….He’g oing to be signed, and he’s going to be a rich man here in Dallas..I have been hearing this for over a year now that we HAVE to sign Ware…Hurry , Hurry sign Ware…The world is falling apart..Hurry Hurry….ok….enough of that.
Here’s the deal: DeMarcus Ware is signed through the 2009 season. Meaning, He’s property of the Dallas Cowboys till Februaray 15, 2010. That’s NEXT year..
Secondly, He will become a Restricted Free Agent after his contract runs out. I’m not saying we’ll just give him the highest tender for a 1st and 3rd…Cuz even a dumb ass would know that he’s get scooped up for that price…..Point is…NEXT Year is an UNCAPPED YEAR….Ware’s contract demand will not be going up….Albert Haynesworth just inked a 7 year / 100 million dollar contract. I am not saying Ware doesn’t deserve bif time money…But he doesn’t deserve that kind of money…8 years/100 I can see.
Secondly, if cap concerns are still play, several players (Kosier, Henry, Spears,) on this team will be coming of off the end of their contracts, will most likely not retained, and will be freeing up well over 10 million dollars to resign our stars, or bringing new FA’s……..
And finally, I believe Ware is very happy here, doesn’t plan on going anywhere, and Dallas wants to sign him..Jerry pays his players….BUT If Ware gets and urge to explore FA, Jerry slaps the exclusive franchise tag on him, and we go on to the next season while negotiating throughout trying to get something done…Basically…to make this long story short, WARE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE, even if he wanted to…He does not NEED to be signed right now, and is better served to wait until training camp to sign giving us liquid assets to explore bringing in help…CUZ we already KNOW the Ray Lewis is in his ear everyday trying to get down here, and we KNOW Ware would love to have a guy like Lewis behind him stunting on the blitz play……Ware wants to win more than he wants to get paid….let’s relax with the Ware must be signed panic talk…He’s not going anywhere….We have 4 tenders to sign, possibly 8+ draft picks to sign, and any lower grade FA we may pick up….But I sure don’t want to cut off our chances to sign a Bart Scott or Ray Lewis.

I hate giving old guys big money.
Last year I was against resigning Flozell, but I suppose we had no choice based on your inability to draft o-lineman. I was against resigning TO and we all know the discussion there. Lewis? Please, no more Jerry, Not another Methuselah!

Anybody else think
Lewis getting the richer deal is an indication that the Ravens feel Scott is just a byproduct from playing alongside a HOF’er?

Maybe because it's true?
5/35 was overpaying for Bart, but 6/48? Is that a joke? I have absolute faith in McClain/Barnes/Gooden taking Scott’s place, just like I trusted guys in the past to fill in for Thomas/Hartwell/Boulware etc.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

We're not talking about losing Ray
He’s staying.

I know that.
I was just adding my two cents worth that you may loste guys like Thomas/Boulware but it’s hard toi replace Ray
by texstar on Feb 27, 2009 10:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's certainly true
We’ve lost coordinators/players left and right, but Ray has kept each unit intact.
