Shawn Springs... Released

Not sure if anyone else saw this, but the Washington Redskins released CB Shawn Springs. I'm sure no one really needs a background on this guy, as the Boys went against him two times a year for the last few years. I think he would be a great pick up by Dallas. Move Henry to safety and start Newman and Springs. Check out this link to an article on Blue and Silver report using a lot of stats by KC Joyner. Very informative. Curious to see what others think about this.

i don't

we have enough secondary players that are only truly healthy 8 games a year. We don’t need another one.

When healthy though, hes a legit cb – much better than deangelo hall for example. Maybe as good as a healthy newman.

i don't think he'll be at a lower cost

with the way salaries are balooning, and the fact that springs has been a better player (though hurt more). I guess its worth a look though.

+1 cowboy...

He is an upgrade over Henry, and would come at a lower salary than Henry…I say we cut Henry now, gain 4-6 million in cap space, and sign this guy.

From rotoworld

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_contract.aspx?sport=NFL&id=2634

Henry has one year left on his deal, the total cap charge will be 5.6 mil. If we cut him, we save 3.6 mil.

I don’t think theres a chance we’re gonna be able to sign springs for less than 6 million a year . But maybe I have a higher opinion of him than nfl personell.

your over valuing Springs...

you don’t pay big money for a 34 year old CB that hasn’t played a full season since 2000…

If he’s paid more than 2.5 million…i’d be shocked…

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 27, 2009 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

plus he's missed games the past few seasons due to injury

i say give jenkins and scandrick the #2 & #3 corner spots, move henry to safety (as many of you st ated), and leave T-New as our #1.

then, try to draft someone either moore or delmas @ safety.

Yeah, so?

Look at Newman’s and Henry’s games played totals those same years. Lots of games missed. I’m not saying I want him. I think it’s time to let Jenkins play. But I do think Springs will get money and a job. Much lesser CBs are making big money.

by Rafael Vela on Feb 27, 2009 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

the point i was trying to make is that...

i personally don’t want King Jerry to shell out excessive dough on a corner in his mid-30s who has a history of injuries when we’ve got three currently under contract (T-New, Jenkins, and Scandrick).

plus, safety, o-line depth, and lb depth are also concerns.

those CB's you speak of Raf are 5-10 years younger, and haven't missed 18 games in the past 3 seasons..

he can still play, sure, but any team that gives him more than 3-4 million a year are just plain foolish..

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 27, 2009 5:06 PM CST up reply actions

2.5 mil?

for the guy who shut down TO in our first game? Springs has been as good a cb as anyone in this league the last 5 years, his problem has been health. The only way he gets paid less than 3 million is if its to go to a championship contender.

by foyesboys on Feb 27, 2009 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

you think he's gonna go to a Detriot, Oakland, Cincy team just to prolong his career and get paid ??

he would be a damn fool if he DOESN’T go to a contender..highly doubtful teams will even pursue him, much less so to be a starter…

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 27, 2009 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

Right, but we took a chance on Pacman why not Springs. He will probably want to sign with Dallas and if he is healthy a legit number 2 borderline number 1 CB. If he is there for the taking for a reasonable deal (not like DeAngelo Hall, who robbed the bank) why not take the chance? People scream for Henry to move to safety, but would you want to go into the season with Newman/Scandrick or Jenkins? Or Newman/Springs with Scandrick in the slot?

by Z0827 on Feb 27, 2009 11:00 AM CST reply actions

springs is gonna get a monster deal though i think..just not from us

Hes a proven good corner in this league, and somebody will pay him more than we can offer and hope he stays healthy.

As for our cb problem…it kinda depends. We could sign/draft a safety and keep henry at cb. Or we can draft a cb and expect to make that move. Dave Campo did a great job with the young guys last year – scandrick and jenkins looked like great corners to me. Jenkins, with another offseason under his belt, may be that #2 cb you were talking about .Scandriuck can clearly handle the slot.

by foyesboys on Feb 27, 2009 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

I may be naive, but some players do like to live out dreams, and I think Springs could be one of them. I am not thinking that he will take next to nothing to play, but I would say he would be a bargain and a very good insurance policy against two young CB’s. I agree that Scandrick and Jenkins could turn out to be good CB’s, but why rush them? With Springs and Newman you could potentially have two very good CB’s to learn from. This will not only help the team now, but help in the future with the skills he could pass on to the young players.

by Z0827 on Feb 27, 2009 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

i see your point

If we can get him for a modest price, I’m all for it cause he is a great player, and you can’t have enough cb depth. But I think he could see Deangelo Hall type money (s little less due to age/injury concerns)

by foyesboys on Feb 27, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

Springs has been the most consistent CB the last five years, which is why he’s tops on that Joyner list, which I compiled.

Denver and Tampa have a ton of money to spend and no warm bodies on defense. I would not be surprised to see him join the Broncos. Mike Nolan coached him at D.C. and could pair him with Champ Bailey.

by Rafael Vela on Feb 27, 2009 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

They don't need Springs...

They just drafted two corners last year they should be ready to put more time on the field next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them puts Henry on the bench by the time next season begens.

I find it absolutely comical

that any time a well known player is cut by another team, Cowboys fans seem to think we’d have an interest in signing that player.

Just really cracks me up.

Are you kidding? I would almost guarantee there is some level of interest in signing him. Whether this interest becomes reality is another story. Regardless of what comes of it, he would still be a great addition.

by Z0827 on Feb 27, 2009 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think most NFL teams are laughing

You really don’t think that the Cowboys personnel crew (read: "Jerry"), along with every other team, go over every single player that gets cut by someone else? I’ve never been in a GM’s office, but I gotta think that they give every player a look, even if it’s just a cursory “what do you think about ____” Obviously we’re not GMs here in the blogosphere, but most of us are trying to think like one…

by greatwhitenorth on Feb 27, 2009 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

there is a big difference

between looking at a released player and actively pursuing that player.

by Terry on Feb 27, 2009 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

That's what I was thinking

Springs is a big, physical guy who could excel at FS like Rod Woodson did. My only worry would be that he’s so injury prone and safeties have to mix it up a lot. But Springs is probably still too good a corner for us to get at a good price.

However, he’s 34 with a good deal of injury history, so if he doesn’t get a bunch of action on the FA market, I’d be all for giving him an incentive laden deal to take a shot at FS for us. Let him and Henry bang it out in training camp, see who makes the transition better.

Springs visits

The Washington Times reports that he’s gonna meet with the Patriots. The Washington Post offered the possibility of reuniting with Saints new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Doesn’t look like he’ll be short of offers.

He didn't grade out well on FO's metrics this year

From what I recall he was the worst of Washington’s cornerbacks.. .and only played 9 games if memory serves.

Springs is a good corner

and you can not have enough good cb. We can afford to address this in the draft. Got to sign Ware first and use whatever cap is left to fill real needs.

Cowboys are interested

Galloway and Company’s Matt Mosely reports the Cowboys are interested in Springs, coming from his sources at Valley Ranch.

Another over the hill guy all you guys want

I’d rather have Orlando Scandrick and Mike Jenkins on the field than spend money on Shawn Springs. This is a guy that the Redskins thought was so worthless that they’d rather have DeAngelo Hall than Springs. I’ve heard some of you say, the boys took a chance on Pacman, why not Springs. Well, Pacman didn’t cost anything, and we got back a draft pick from Tennessee after he screwed up again. Not to mention, the you guys beat him out. If the Cowboys bring in Springs, then he either sucks and gets beaten out by Scandrick and Jenkins (most likely) or he plays ok and takes away minutes and practice from the young guys. I feel like everyone is playing too much Madden the way everyone is ready to sign every Tom, Dick and Harry that gets cut from another team. Remember, they’re cut for a reason.

by osa1011 on Feb 28, 2009 4:55 AM CST reply actions

Not true..osa

it’s because Danny Boy signed Haynesworth/Hall to ridiculous contracts. He’s still a very good player. BTW, that’s great to have Scandrick and Jenkins but you need depth. Have you forgotten last year? You can’t have too many DBs. Newman is injury prone and you really want to trust you whole secondary to you-uns? I don’t think so.

by texstar on Feb 28, 2009 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

the problem is

that we need depth at cb, and we no longer have it. Are you comfortable with jenkins, ball and scnadrick lining up at #1, 2 and 3 if newman goes down (and hes had his own injury history these alst two years)? cause I’m not.

by foyesboys on Feb 28, 2009 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

He was strickly cut for economical cap ramifications, and age, to sign younger players..

It certainly wasn’t because he can’t play anymore…..same reasons Fred Taylor, Marv Harrison, Brian Dawkins, and D Brooks were let go.

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 28, 2009 8:39 AM CST reply actions

He still a good solid player.

IMO, he’s a class act. He pretty much shut TO down in the first game so he’s still got something left in the tank.
