Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

DMN: Dallas Cowboys in preliminary talks with Kyle Boller

From Calvin Watkins:

The Cowboys have talked with the agent of free agent quarterback Kyle Boller.

Jerry Jones is interested in a veteran as a backup and Boller appears to be a good fit. However, Boller didn't play last season because of a rotator cuff injury. But his agent, Justin Schulman, said Boller is healthy.

When Brad Johnson was cut yesterday it opened up debate over who would be a good fit behind Tony Romo. Of the available free agents, Boller may be the best of the bunch. If the Cowboys don't sign a veteran backup then we're looking at a rookie and Brooks Bolliinger fighting for a spot behind Romo. Let's hope the Cowboys make a decent offer.

Kyle Boller is a six year veteran out of the University of California. His best season came in 2004 with the Ravens when he started all 16 games and threw for 2,559 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a QB rating of 70.9

Well that is good news, I’ve always liked him.

In other news Lito Sheppard, is getting shopped, the Jets are looking into getting him, the Eagles have A LOT riding on this draft if they deal Lito away, lose Dawkins, and don’t sign Housh.

agreed.

I would be happy to have him..

Don’t be shocked if Rex Grossman gets mentioned with our back up job.

Ha

Hopefully we don’t have to find out, and we can just sign Boller.

One concern though, isn't that a pretty serious injury to a QB?

I’d feel better if we had a backup QB that wasn’t coming off of rotator cuff surgery. All we need is Noodle Arm Junior.

by texstar on Feb 27, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

A year is plenty of time to recover from that injury.

Although Mullins is the expert on that.

Where is our man Mullin when we need him...

First off, Boller was always my choice to become back up here…But I sure didn’t realize he had a shoulder problem…wonder if it’s his throwing arm….if so…I hope he gets a full scale try out and medical exam…otherwise..we really should be looking into Kitna, Orlovski, Batch, Simms, Grossman, and Leftwich

damn..not sure about him...was there surgery performed ?...extensive rehab..

where’s he stand now ?..I wouldn’t pay a guy who can’t show up at Valley Ranch right now and make every throw…..He used to have a good arm….not quite sure now..I know I had a shoulder tear, and i haven’t been the same since..

Yeah, they'd need to give him a very thorough workout

I’m sure they would do that before any offers were made.

Is there anybody that we could trade for like Minn did?

Beck is possible

Or, if the Chargers would take the same compensation for Volek, he’d be OK.

OK, this is what I found from Rotoworld

“Chargers re-signed QB Billy Volek to a three-year, $9 million contract. Profootballtalk.com reports the deal includes a $3 million signing bonus.”

Apparently he signed it last year.

I'd love Volek too...but what makes you think SD would get rid of their #2 QB ??

leaving them with nothing Charlie Whitehurst …..not so sure about that one..

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 27, 2009 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Just a thought

They took Whitehurst in the 3rd round three seasons ago, so maybe he’s ready to be the backup. I thought maybe they would be open to trading Volek since Rivers is healthy now.

it would be cost efficient for them to do so.

either that, or cut Whitehurst if he isn’t ready to back up after 3 seasons..but Norv’s at least going with 3 QB’s and doing it the right way…..

I’m happy if we can get one of the decent 5-6 year vet QB’s who can still wing it downfield. Experience holding is a bonus. Hope they sign him if his Rotator Cuff injury is fully healed.

Everybody’s moving and shaking but us-nada. I know Jerry said that we wouldn’t be very active in FA but I was hoping we’d at least get somebody. At this rate, we’ll be picking up someone off of the scrapheap.

by texstar on Feb 27, 2009 6:35 PM CST up reply actions

Boller is OK

definately better than Grossman. I would still like to wait and see . We have learned that you have to have a backup that is capable of winning. Johnson was not. Having a backup that could assist Tony with ball protection since the coaches don’t appear to get through would be a bonus. Draft a kid of course, but maybe the veteran could be a teacher too.

by oldboysfan on Feb 27, 2009 6:48 PM CST reply actions

With Boller you don't need to draft a kid

you can just stick a UFA on your practice squad

I think that's one of the better moves...

I’ve heard.

He’s not that old and he has a good arm. Definitly a decent backup.

He's dumb as a fart

Jeff Tedford had to oversimplify everything for him at Cal.

Brian Billick had to find that out the hard way.

Wonder his Wonderlic score?

Presuming, by your statement, it was bad and Billick then ignored that information, it’s his own fault. Then again, if Garrett’s critics are correct and his schemes are so surprisingly simple, it could be a good fit!

I've watched a lot of Ravens games

living in Maryland, and I’ve seen most of Boller’s outings. What he lacks is not intelligence, it’s more intangible. He has no feel for the game, no vision. He’s never been able to feel pressure around him, so he tends to get hit from behind and fumble the ball, and after that happens to him a couple of times in a game, he starts to panic and will get rid of the ball before his receivers are open or he’ll just throw it into the ground. When he goes through his progressions, it’s so mechanical, it’s just painful to watch. In his defense, he’s never had great receivers (Heap is a good tight end but rarely healthy and Mason is solid but undersized) and he lacked good pass protection for many of the years he started. I always thought he was better coming off the bench because he does better when the focus isn’t on him. The Cowboys have enough characters to keep the focus and pressure off, so he may have a chance to be a successful backup, but for the moment, he’s still another one of those big QBs with a big arm and no game.

by Kevdog on Feb 27, 2009 10:05 PM CST up reply actions

ABSOLUTELY!!!

Boller is clueless out there….you wanted a non-statue? get rid of Johnson….you want a scrambling ball of confusion? get Boller…Kevdog is RIGHT ON! I watch a lot of Ravens games here, too!

More then likely Lito to the Jets for a 2009 5th, and 2010 conditional

A steal for the Jets, I thought the Eagles could get more for it. Although the 2010 pick could be as high as a second.

Boller sucks but he's better than Johnson

so thats a plus, but hopefully Romo can stay healthy this year and he won’t have to throw a pass and just hold for Folk.

In Romo we Trust

i agree

is Boller the best backup out there? Probably not. But he’s better than Johnson, and I hope he never sees the field next season.

I still would proceed very cautiously with a guy coming off a torn labrum....

Don’t get me wrong, Brad’s horrible, but we want an instant upgrade. I’d be shopping a little bit more if I was Jerry. The only problem that I see with your statement “hopefully he’ll never see the field”, is the fact that you never know when/if Romo goes down….ie Tom Brady. You can’t get a backup QB with the mindset of “well he’ll never hopefully see the field.” You’ve got to have someone that can carry on in an emergency. I don’t buy some people logic that “if Romo goes down, we are screwed” because it doesn’t have to be that way.

by texstar on Feb 28, 2009 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

you're

right, it doesn’t have to be that way. Last year, it kinda was. Due to Brad Johnson being a status, and his inability to throw the football further than 10 yards. I thought since the end of the season backup QB is the #1 priority this year. I hope they really evaluate all the possible guys who can be a nice fit here and sign the right guy. If it is Boller, and he’s fine, then so be it. If it’s Simms, so be it.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

statue, not status

by Dub_TC on Feb 28, 2009 11:10 AM CST reply actions

I'm agreeing with you.....

My confidence is just a little shaken in JG because he picked Johnson last year. That should have never happened. When I saw that they cut Johnson, I was excited because Jerry said that would be a priority in the off-season. Then when I hearc that they are looking at Boller coming off a torn labrum, it makes me step back and say that they aren’t really addressing the back-up position. I really don’t know much about Boller, but I’d rather them look elsewhere.
