Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Assessing this year's Free Agency

Chris Canty and Kevin Burnett.

Canty has a hero in the NFL and he plays for the Raiders. Why was Kelly given as much money as he got last year? That Canty hasn't been signed is surely an indication that not every team values Tommy Kelly kind of production like the Raiders do....

Burnett has coverage skills and not much more, he can't play in the 3-4, we've seen James battling with Guards and getting his @ss handed to him, and we're talking about a much bigger, stronger and not injury prone LB. Giving Burnett a full time job wouldn't be funny or enduring.

Jon Kitna for Anthony Henry?

Is this a joke? We're giving a starting CB/FS for a backup QB? We're making a hole in a position that was OK?

It isn't a joke. Henry had serious durability issues that were getting worse, lacked the wheels to backpedal and people wanted him moving to Safety... That's the real joke...

Yes, the team now has depth issues at CB, but the team had depth issues at QB. If this trade tells you something, it should tell you that the team had ZERO trust whatsoever in finding a quality backup QB in a talent poor Draft at the position.

Keith Brooking.

I really like this addition, he's a bigger Zach Thomas that has 3-4 ILB experience in Wade's schemes. You just can't expect that he's going to play at the level in which he played in 2002 and 2003, he's 6 years older, but he's going to be an upgrade over the good year that Thomas had.

Rumor is springs is coming for a visit

If we’re going after him, the kitna move makes much more sense.

I find it hard to believe

that brooking will be an upgrade over Zack. I cannot tell you how many times I was amazed at zack’s ability to play sideline to sideline. I could be wrong, and I hope I am. I have not really followed Brooking these past few years. Is he still a player?

by cowboyfan on Feb 28, 2009 6:29 PM CST reply actions

Zach had a good year

But not much more.

He really was out of position, if a Guard puts his hands on Bradie James the most likely thing is that Bradie will be out of the play. If a Guard placed his hands on Zach, Zach was out of the play.

Nobody can question his effort or heart, but he isn’t cut for the 3-4, look around the League and show me the 5-11 ILBs, Zach was forced to put on a lot of weight to survive, just like Nguyen was forced by Parcells.

Brooking took a lot of heat last season becuase he isn’t what he used to be, especially in coverage, but he’s been surpassing the 100 tackles at SSLB, not at MLB. His skills, though eroding, and his 3-4 experience will help him be an upgrade.

by Chandus on Feb 28, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

I like both moves

Hard to believe I am saying this, but it is true.

Kitna is a significant upgrade over anything we had on the roster and I have questions about Romo’s ability to get through a 16 game season in the NFC East when the book on Romo says pressure and beating the snot out of him will force him to make trademark stupid decisions.

Brooking is a great insurance policy against Carpenter (or Burnett if they retain him) from faltering, plus, he’s a rock in the locker room.

Those lamenting Henry’s exit haven’t watched the tape too closely. Opposing teams are pissed that we let him go because his 10-yard cushion on speed receivers was a guaranteed 3rd down conversion in crunch time. He’s always been a stiff-hipped CB playing out of position.

Now, find me a safety somewhere. Sean Jones anyone?

+1 Blings ....I'm ok with every move so far...

I say we get a trade done somewhere with Roy….sign Springs to play FS, move Hamlin to SS, and we should be looking at second tier CB’s out there like Corey Ivy, etc, etc,,,to battle Ball for that 4th CB spot. and we draft CB, FS, SS, ILB, NT, OL, and DE in the draft…

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 28, 2009 6:49 PM CST up reply actions

i think

Romo’s poor decisions are generally irrelevant of the pressure. He reacts to pressure about as well/poorly as any other qb out there. I can think of a few games where he handled the pressure very well and a few where he didn’t.

But yea, i like the kitna signing.

I'd take a flyer on Sean Jones

especially seeing that we may get him for the Sunday price.

With Sean Jones I would recommend patience

He had arthroscopic knee surgery last year, was allowed to test Free Agency after a very bad year in which it was obvious that he played at much less than 100% and, apparently, no team is willing to touch him.

Something tells me that he isn’t ready to pass a physical.

by Chandus on Feb 28, 2009 10:07 PM CST up reply actions

Well...

He had a really good year in 2007, even when his team CBs and FS leave a lot to be desired.

Last year he was awful, but that had a lot to do with his injury and surgery.

In 2007, I voted for him in the Pro Bowl voting.

by Chandus on Feb 28, 2009 11:00 PM CST up reply actions

Actually....

He had 2 really good seasons in 2006 and 2007.

21 PD and 10 Ints?

In the past 3 years, Williams, Watkins and Davis have this numbers: 24 and 11.

by Chandus on Feb 28, 2009 11:05 PM CST up reply actions

He had a bad year on a team that had a bad year.

Obviously, he’s not a star player. He would just offer an option other than Watkins (more of a FS) and Davis (a ST captain).

I like the guy and as long as he is ready by training camp why need sign him to a deal like Brookings.

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 3, 2009 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

I think

The Kitna flip is OK, Henry was awful last year. No clearer way to put it beside ’Henry’s play last year was so lacking that I occasionally wondered if it he suffered from extreme shortsightedness and a fear of physical contact of any kind’.
I like the Brooking signing as long as It’s only an insurance policy. I’m not at all sold on him as a starting LB at this stage of his career.
Good call on Sean Jones. I think he’s actually quite similar to Hamlin two years ago: Young, relatively unproven starting safety solid against both the run and the pass, not spectacular in any respect. It doesn’t look like he’s drumming up major interest anywhere, so It’s not like we’re betting the farm on him.

Blings, have you seen...

The Venting anger of alot of fans over the Henry/Kitna trade? I myself wanted to watch Kitna get hurt last year by our Defense for calling out Brady James and everyone else, saying we sucked. I hated hearing that, but was that me really hating to hear the truth? It still hurts, and Kitna may be a loudmouth, but I will get a big laugh when I hear that Jay Ratliff pounded him into the turf in training camp (Um, maybe that would not be so good since he is our backup QB now) and no matter what I have to support him. Who knows, maybe his vocal and LOUD mouth might be good for this team. His arrogance knows no end (possibly). So much for the humble quarterback.

As far as Henry is concerned, I really liked him as a person, but unfortunately, football is a business and less a sport these days. To say he was a liability in pass coverage is understating the point. I myself wanted him to be moved to safety YEARS ago, but have now seen enough deterioration of his play to realize that such a move will not benefit the Cowboys enough, so although sad, I must say it seems like the bosses are realizing where we are weak in pass coverage and willing to do something about it is a good step, so despite all the negativity about the moves, I must say that we have become stronger and I give both moves thumbs up. We finally have come to realize that the “Glamour” moves are not the only ones that benefit the team. We have to hit on some of these blue collar type players too. We also cleared cap space to give Demarcus what he deserves. Next up is dealing with Roy Williams, then getting a SS, And adressing NT.

I don't think many people still saw Henry as a viable corner anymore

His inability to flip his hips to turn and shadow a receiver meant that he had to give them the aforementioned cushion.

The team drafted two good CB’s last year and could pick up a vet before free agency is over or try to find another Scandrick in the 4th or 5th rounds.

Yes, I probably understated the obvious, but I’m also not sure he could have cut it as a safety either. The good news is we have capable guys in Jenkins and Scandrick.

We also have a backup QB who could win a couple of games for us in a pinch. As for his brashness, I’m torn on this because I think Kitna is tough and gritty. To be quite honest, I’d like to see some of that rub off on Romo, especially now that T.O. is gone.

Side note: I find it “interesting” that the same guy who made Row Williams (WR) a pro bowl receiver two seasons ago is now our backup QB. Coincidence? Hmmm…

I'm liking the moves a lot

Kitna was no slouch at QB, and his relationship with Roy could help facilitate a better relationship on the field with him and Romo. An upgrade at ILB, and now we’re in decent shape going into the draft.

I don’t think we’re as thin at corner as people would think. Assuming Newman remains healthy(a big assumption, given the last few years, I know), we’re in decent shape. Scandrick and Jenkins both looked decent enough to hold their own, and either would represent an upgrade in the starting line up over Henry. That said, I wouldn’t be upset at all if Dallas either picked up a cheap FA or drafted another CB in the later rounds.

Jerry’s doing all the right things, oddly enough. Not making any huge moves, but doing just enough to subtly improve the team. Now I can go back to worrying about re-signing Ware.

Epic Fail since 1985

agreed

I think Jerrys had a great offseason so far to be honest. between this, the new ST coach, the gag order, and letting pacman, tank go and not overpaying canty or burnett.

We do need more cb depth though cause newman has not stayed healthy.

It would have been a good move if we simply cut Henry

Like Roy Willy, Henry’s production no longer matched his cap value. Getting significant cap savings in the last year of a contract is big.

My best guess is that Roy Willy was the trade bait, but Henry became an acceptable alternative.

Does this mean we get the Thong back? Probably. He’ll take a pay cut and play with a chip. We’ll also be looking for an upgrade in the draft, a mid-level FA, and/or from our current roster.

As for CB, Chandus is correct. We have extreme depth and Henry was nothing more than a progress stopper. Play your 1st rounder and feel blessed you found your nickel guy in the 5th round. Ball is VERY fast and just needs a little more seasoning to quit fouling and just trust his talent, which is significant.

Oh, and we draft CBs every year (you know the saying “you can never have enough…”). How would a rookie make the roster with Henry on it.

All-in-all, a great move in that you get your backup QB and cap relief.

Yeah, I was wondering though....

if Roy was a smoke screen to get something out of Henry or if Roy trully is trying to be dealt. The reason I say that is because you would think that if we were trying to get any value out of Roy we wouldn’t have leaked out the story about him getting cut or trade bait. Secondly, if they were going to cut/trade Roy you would think they would have already signed someone like Gibril Wilson, Dawkins etc. They appear to be sitting on it.

Too many decent FAs out there

GloryDayz has the article up showing the wealth of talent still available in free agency.

Bullocks, Phillips, Sensabaugh, Leonard, and Butler are all under 30 (most 26 or 27) and all started on decent teams.

The list of veterans is also decent and some can still play, like Sharper, Mike Brown and Lawyer Milloy.

Why would a $4 million safety that’s lost his nerve and can’t cover bring anything? Hell, we don’t even want him.

Add Sean Jones to the conversation

He makes me think Ken Hamlin and how he was acquired by the Cowboys. For those that don’t remeber he was signed to a two year deal with little money becuase his last year in Seattle was very poor due to health related problems.

by Chandus on Mar 3, 2009 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

I find it comical

as if the Cowboys have to honor his request or something…he’s under contract so they can cut or trade him whenever they want.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Mar 3, 2009 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't

he saves us some cap space so why not if no one is biting let him go…I think we are probably waiting till we have a repalcement though cuz right now we only have Watkins and Brown to play that spot and I wouldn’t want either to play SS..both are closer to FS to me

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 3, 2009 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

Nor FSs...

And by now I believe that Watkins isn’t even talented enough for the NFL. The guy has height, runs fast and that’s it. Terrible instincts.
