DMN Blog: Cowboys should look at Chris Simms as backup QB

Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News is hip to Jerry Jones' game. Although Jones has said the Dallas Cowboys won't be looking to make a big impact by signing big name free agents this offseason, he's compiled a list of potential candidates to make the move to Dallas, and Chris Simms is one of the key players on it.

After Tony Romo sustained a pinky injury during 2008, the Cowboys were left with Brad Johnson as their starter and the team went 1-2 during that stint including a demoralizing loss to the the St. Louis Rams, who finished 2-14 in 2008.

I'm new hear

but isn’t fanshots just for videos and photos. I read the description and this sounds like it should go in fanposts. If not someone explain

by texstar on Feb 3, 2009 5:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

fanshots have a min word limit for a reason

its too encourage creative thought flow for people to analyze and discuss related COWBOY material. Copy and Paste quotes links etc. are what fanshots are made for. If it takes you less than 5mins to type it up that should be an indicator.

Fan shots get no love and until people pay them more attention people make them fanposts.. That is fine with me.

I have to agree

I get pissed when I find something to share and it gets covered in dust in the fanshots. The only good things to put there are video, links or OT posts.

I would have never seen this had it not been a Fanpost.

Any alternative to Brooks Bollinger is cool with me. Still would like a developmental 3rd guy in this draft.

If they keep Bollinger around then I will have lost all faith in Garrett or whoever decided to get him and noodle arm Johnson.

Please

with the lastest rush of really good creative and the authors putting in the hard work of fanpost lets try to remember theres a fanshot section.

I'm not too sure

the Titans will let him go. They seem to be very nervous about Vince Youngs’ ability to be an NFL QB.

by Benthere on Feb 3, 2009 5:59 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

that whole deals kinda weird

with VY. Something really weird must have happened with him for them to bring in Simms in the first place. They don’t nornally keep 3 QBs

by texstar on Feb 3, 2009 6:11 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

maybe like him going schitzo

leaving out from his house with a gun and making all his family and friends think he’s suicidal?

I'd rather have Simms, too.

Brad Johnson can be QB coach as far as I’m concerned. Great having him in the organization, just not as backup QB anymore. His arm is shot.

by illcowboy on Feb 3, 2009 8:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

While they're at it they should

get rid of Wade Wilson as well. I mean he came from the Bears. You know how well he worked with Grossman.

by texstar on Feb 3, 2009 10:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I live in Bears territory

And Bears fans are happy to tell you how terrible their QBs are.

by illcowboy on Feb 4, 2009 4:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

that seems to be Garrett's MO

he like to get people he either played with or played underneath i.e. Brad Johnson, Wade Wilson,Hudson Houck. If he doesn’t wise up, that will be his downfall.

by texstar on Feb 4, 2009 4:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's funny.

We got Wilson from the Bears, Garrett from the Dolphins—not exactly 2 QB proven teams at the time.

either Garrett doesn’t know enough people or he’s naive. What’s really sad is Phillips lets him do it. At least that’s the way it seems.

I think

They are two guys who made it to the NFL off of hard work and determination, not pure skill/athletic ability. So I can see how they would be good coaches, not perfect, but learning..

Patience is what the good organizations have, we need to learn some as an organization.

I agree.

I’m on board with Jerry’s thing about sticking together. Cohesion comes through patience; I don’t want my fav team to install revolving doors at the key coaching positions. That may delay the progress of some players, as well as the chemistry on both sides of the ball.
Just weird to me that Garrett and Wilson (obviously they have previous ties to the Cowboys) came aboard after being on teams with turds at the QB position.

I would like the signing and wouldn't cost much

maybe a 4th or 5th rounder. He is not a UFA.

Simms is nothing special for sure

but he’s probably a lot better than Johnson. As long as we would get him cheap, that would be a good move.

one thing that has always

hurt Simms is he has to live up to his dad. Same with Brian Griese. They get hyped so much coming out of college because of their dad’s when in reality their dad’s happened to have really good teams surrounding them therefore making them look good. Not saying they weren’t good but not in the same category IMO of Marino,Elway etc. Unfortunately, it puts a lot of pressure on the kids. Simms does have a really strong arm though.

by texstar on Feb 4, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

that issue never affected the Manning brothers

Archie is considered one of the all time greats, would have had multiple SB rings with good teams, and that pressure didn’t seem to bother either Peyton or Eli.

true

on Peyton but not sure about Eli yet. IMO the jury is still out. I would venture to say he had a pretty bad December.

Simms will be much better

than Johnson and Bollinger…so its a start

by nicholas.rodriguez on Feb 4, 2009 10:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

my two cents...NOT a fan of Chris Simms

seriously…what has he done in the NFL lately ??

I can name 10 free agent QB’s better than him.

by CowboysRnumba1 on Feb 4, 2009 11:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yup.

He would be just a wee more exciting of a signing than Bollinger was.

BandAids are temporary. We need Neosporion.

Mike Vick is going to be our backup QB this year.

You heard it here 1st.

Jerry might actually avoid Vick

Surely he’s learned his lesson after the Pacman experiment.

Plus, isn’t the NFL jury still out on whether or not Vick can even come back to play?

by the red scare on Feb 7, 2009 4:23 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no way that happens

First of all that would be a PR nightmare for Jones, who is already in the middle of one and second Vick will only sign with a team where he has a chance to start and he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of starting here.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Feb 7, 2009 3:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I was pretty much joking.

I wouldn’t put it past Jerry though to do it. How many teams do you think would give him a chance to start though? I bet the the Cowboys will be mentioned as one of the teams he might go to.
