JJ inteview tonight - MB3 possibly returning to his original role, I like it, here is why

The CBS 11 interview that will be shown tonight (thanks to Grizz for the info), I am writing this to offer my take on why I would like to see MB3 back in his original role of closer.

The first thing I would like to state are the reasons that I do not feel apply to this discussion of why he should or should not be the "starter".

Star-divide

Reason 1: MB3 wore down over the season when he received the majority of the carries.  MB3 injury that hampered him over the last three games of the season had to do with a dislocated toe he suffered when someone stepped directly on his foot.  MB3 made it worse by trying to run on the injury and while trying to compensate for the current injury he strained a different muscle.  The example that comes to mind when I found out he had strained himself brought me back to when Staubach said that he strained his should when he tried to adjust this throwing motion do to a broken finger.  MB3 did suffer a rib injury early in the season but it never sidelined him for any game time.  So the idea that he wore down is a little half-baked, there is reason to believe that it could happen due to his style but the burden of proof is thin in my opinion.

Reason 2:  MB3 was not able to sustain the same ypc as he did in 07, there is an theory for this as well.   Two actually the injury mentioned in the previous paragraph affected what speed he did have and made him less effective.  The three games with BJ also hurt his ypc because in the 1st game it became obivious that BJ would not beat them throught the air so they simply shut down the run.  The next two teams followed the same formula: lather, rinse repeat.  With that said I do agree that MB3 should return to his original role.

The reasons I am in favor of having MB3 return to closer.

Reason 1:  The previous time he was there he flourished, he was very productive and had no problem with where he was on the rb lineup.  MB3 style is better suited for this role and it showed in 06 and 07 years for proof (this we all know).  During the early part of games the defenders were able to bring him down a bit easier in the early part of the game, he is smaller than Brandon Jacobs, he does have the will but not the size to do what Jacobs does in the early part of the game.

Reason 2:  The amount of fumbles that he had in 08 were a little troubling, the years before he seldom had that problem.  I would wager that since he was the starter maybe he felt the need to fight for every inch which resulted in more opportunities for fumbles.  At the same time maybe just the increase in carries were the direct cause of his increased fumbles.  It could also be something that opposing teams learned about his style since he was the starter and received more carries he drew increased study from opposing defenses.

I stated the earlier reasons that I did not agree with because there seems to be a growing perception on this blog that MB3 wore down and could not produce.  I have brought these points foward for discussion to bring a different take and state that those in favor of moving MB3 back to where he was can make the case without having to use this half-baked perception that he cannot hack-it.  It's my opinion you could make you point on at least the last two reasons I stated.  Of course this is all has no substance at this time if the interview does not touch on these subjects.  I believe that we will not know much until TC starts and the team starts to install what offense it will be running for the 09 season.  Feel free to share your own take and what you think of the reasons I provided.

Yess

this is what we’ve always wanted. Why give Barber more carries than he should get when we have 2 other great backs active in the game? The running game is something i’m really excited about next year, if used correctly (c’mon Jason Carrot).

also Barber didn't "ware down" throughout the season

like people think he did, but he still did ware down some, just like all players who play the entire season.
If you watch the highlights from the playoff game with the Giants when Barber got is first start, he was a monster for 3/4 of the game, and then he started getting slower and losing yards on carries. It’s obvious he can close out well(washington game) and he’s best in a limited role (06 & 07 seasons) so having Choice start maybe and sprinkles of Felix will give us a very very dangerous running attack with MB3 closing out.

Barber is still a beast.

Injured yes, wore down no way. The above points about Johnson games are accurate. Nobody was afraid of Johnson’s arm. Combine that with a line that had serious issues and the loss of Felix to spell him. Choice came along very well but not until after Barber was hurt. Sure they used their rookies last year ,but only when they absolutely had to. The kids have experience now. Lets use them and give the vets a breather.

Barber earned the starting position

and Choice has proven himself to be more than worthy as a back-up. Felix is the X-factor and they should use him and Marion together on some plays in the backfield but I truly believe with his speed and open field moves, Felix should be used as a slot reciever some downs as well. Everyone has seen how productive he’s been in a limited role and if you want to spread the field without T.O., he’s the one to do it.

i see felix as a brian westbrook type of back

he’s speedy and shifty but can also go into the slot and catch passes

+1 Felix Jones should be on the field at least 75% of the game...

very seldom do we even need a FB in the I formation, maybe short yardage and goalline only……I would rather Felix and MBIII both start, and play the majority of first and second downs, with Choice coming in to give one or the other a blow once in awhile….then go single back on passing downs, or just split Felix out in the slot….it’s very simple……..

Great post

like im sure everyone else feels on this blog

choice: first half starter
Felix: whenever wherever just get him on the field
Barber: second half starter? Short yardage, goaline..

What the French?! Toast!

Yep

I like that idea. Put barber in his role from when julius was here – the two minute drill/goal line/4th quarter back. Make the dependable Choice the starter. And either by going with two backs sometimes, putting felix wide, wildcat, whatever – GET FELIX THE BALL. I wouldn’t complain if our rbs got the ball more nad our receivers less compared to last year,

I still like Barber in a starting role.

Just scaled back a bit. I think we have all forgotten how special he really is. I just think they need to keep him around 18 touches. He is still our best back, but the other two have earned some time.

I agree

He’s the best blocking back we have when it comes to blitz protections and I think the injury to Felix and Garrett’s stubborness about getting Tashard on the field (because of his shortcomings around blocking) limited us in the middle of the season.

Start Barber. Get Felix on the field early and often (knowing that he is ALSO a durability risk). Give Choice lots of touches from the I-formation WITH A FULLBACK IN THERE!!!

Choice

was great in blitz pickup
but I agree i went to see some full house formations

by MrMinority on Mar 2, 2009 6:28 PM CST up reply actions

Respectfully Disagree

I have never though Barber was special. I think he is some where between a nice, solid NFL running back and a very good NFL running back – not special. I think Choice is just about the same as Barber. Choice is a bit more shifty and Barber is a bit more of a battering ram.

If any running back on this roster is special it is Felix Jones.

My vote would be to have Choice the starter and get most of the carries through the first 2.5 quarters or so. Barber would take over from there and finish the game. But the whole key is to get Felix Jones the football and let him make plays. He should line up with Barber or Choice in the backfield, in the slot and alone in the backfield. Get him the football on screens, slants, etc. He should be our primary kick returner and if he can return punts he should do that as well. The guy is electric and is the proverbial threat to take the football to the house every time he touches it. He should be used like the Saints use Reggie Bush.

it depends on the situation tho

and we’ll have the flexibility that it can be more situational, and won’t have to be any kind of formula based strictly on carries per game, in other words if we have a decent lead by the half, barber could get 20 carries in the second half, versus another game where he might get 10 carries total.

by scottmaui on Mar 1, 2009 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

agreed

the situation dictates how much barber should get the ball. Generally, i want him to have the ball in 2 minute drill/goal line/running out the clock situations with maybe another drive here or there.

gotta agree with that…Romo will still be able to do damage through the air and have good numbers…We need a True blocking FB though…Lorenzo Neal is out there…Quinn Johnson from LSU could be an option…I like Cricket I do but he can be upgraded and I don’t like anyone enough to not want someone else that would help our team more.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Barber at the FB position in certain situations with either Felix or Choice behind him. Not sure I’d make him my full time FB though, I don’t think he’s built for the pounding.

He would be great for those quick openers and short dump passes.

Garrett needs to get a clue!

by BulletBob on Mar 9, 2009 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

but we don't even use the FB that much...These guys don't need a lead blocker to gain yards...What they need is a crease, that's all.

We played probably 80% single back last year as it is……FB in this system is overrated, and not much of a need at all..imo..

this is more great news

I think jerry is doing a tremendous job this offseason, it seems like hes learned a lot from the things that plagued this team last season.

1. New Special teams coach
2. Stating outright that Wade is the DC too.
3. Cut Tank, Pacman
4. don’t resign Canty for that ridiculous sum of money.
5. Put in place what seems to be a gag order on coaches and players.
6. I don’t know if he actually did this, but supposedly brought players in to give him their feelings on TO and decide his fate. This is the right way to go.
7. Improve backup qb.
8. Get a vet to replace Thomas in the ilb hole.
9. Improve the rb rotation? Which Garrett kinda screwed the pooch on last season.

good list

and I like it. I like that he is being toned down and not doing anything splashy, but just doing basic important moves that make sense.

by scottmaui on Mar 1, 2009 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

It depends on the situation

MBIII is a beast, all our running backs can catch the ball out the back field( which I love by the way). Felix and Choice are truely sensational, both would excel in early parts in the game. Both can do damage in the passing game as well. The only ? mark would be, if felix can handle the blitz, Choice has already put that to rest. I’m guessing Felix will do fine, plus you can’t keep that dude off the field..no way no how!!

I find it very interesting some are talking, maybe trade MBIII. Any thought on that ?

we can't keep all three backs

man, i like all three of our backs. felix gives us that speed dimension, and he has the size to be a starter, he can be used like Brian Westbrook, but can be spelled a little more with MB3. I hate to see any of our backs go, with the way injuries happen it would be smart to keep all 3 for the next couple of years, it just stinks that one of these guys, (probably Choice) is going to be under utilized. Then when Choices rookie contract is expiring we’ll probably have to trade him or resign him and trade or let MB3 go.

by stephen1 on Mar 1, 2009 2:57 PM CST reply actions

MBIII will be washed up by the time Choice is coming into his prime..

Barber will be the first to go…count on that……7 million dollar back ups don’t last too long..

by CowboysRnumba1 on Mar 1, 2009 5:00 PM CST reply actions

I agree due to his style and age that MB3 may not be necessarily washed-up but may be

on the decline or at least what you would call decling value that he would probably be traded or cut before these two RB (if they continue to produce) contracts come up. Mainly because age is a RB biggest enemy on getting a money contract and that will be working against MB3 four years from now more-so than it will be for Choice or Felix.

Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

Wow numba that's rough

Marion’s all heart and runs so hard, I’m not ready to say he’ll be washed up when he’s not that much older than Choice. If anything, his career will end early because of his running style and injuries will force him out. But you can’t replace heart.

by Martin79 on Mar 8, 2009 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying he lacks heart....I'm saying he should be the odd man out, if we're looking towards the future of this ball club...

Choice showed me more than enough in his brief outings last year to prove to me he’d be just fine as a starter on this team, and easily carry the rock 18-22 times a game……There is no way you get rid of Choice or Felix in the future….In 3-4 years, when both their contracts are up, you part ways with MBIII and his 7 million dollar salary, before you part ways with either of the youngins……We’ll see how this next season works out.
