Is it just me?

I have a serious question.

Is it just me or is anyone else struggling to care this offseason?

Normally I check BTB a couple times a day in the offseason.  Now I am down to once a week.  Normally I consume draft info with the restraint of a crack whore.  This year, I can hardly bother to look at 40 times.  Normally I read up on free agents and devise a strategy so if the team needed me to run the front office in a pinch I would be comfortable doing it (certifiably insane but sadly true).  This year... I have hardly looked.  Normally I am counting the days to the draft, the rookie camps and training camps.  This year... not so much.

I think its because last season ended so brutally I am still flat.

Maybe its because with no pick until #51 (is that right -- I am embarrassed that I am not even sure of that) and people thinking that there won't be any 2nd round grades left at that point.  Maybe it's because this is the first time since Parcells took over I felt like we had more needs than the year before.

But I fear its more than that.

I fear I that this year exposed the team as a three ring circus:

RING 1: 58 guys more focussed on what they say to the media than winning.  Guys trying to get other guys cut or traded.  Guys who break down into factions, a group that at times seems on the brink of a race riot.  Players more willing to call out unnamed teammates in the press than to take on a ball carrier.  Parcells used to have a sign that said "Losers come together in groups to gripe about coaching and playing time.  Winners come together as a team."  I sometimes wonder if he has pictures of the 2007 and 2008 Cowboys around the borders of that sign.

RING 2: The coaches.  I started to say "Led by Wade Phillips" but that may not be correct. To be conservative, I will just say the Nominal Head Coach appears to be a eunuch with the motto "I'm just glad to be here."  Assisting him (and I am I use that term lightly) is our very own Boy Genius, the highest paid assistant in the league who has devised the most predictable offense seen in years.  In his defense, its hard to game plan when you are focussed on undermining the head coach and tossing your players under the bus.  When did Garrett turn into a less effective Mike Martz with freckles?  Coordinating the defense? No one, heck who needs a DC.  Especially in this economy with a lockout coming -- why spend $ on coaches you might have to pay through a lockout if you just bought the world's first 240 foot long HD TV?

THE THIRD (AKA THE CENTER) RING: Our very own Arkansas born megalo maniac.  Some see him as the only owner in the league with a radio show.  Others see him as the GM who has gone the longest without a playoff win.  But he doesn't care -- that's right Jerry is just glad people are talking about him.  He LUVS to win.  The only thing he loves more is to be in charge.  What a shame it is becoming increasingly apparent those two things may mutually exclusive.

How we got here (or a not so brief history of my love affair with this team)...

THE FIRST FOOTBALL GAME I REMEMBER WAS SUPER BOWL XIII.  I was 4 3/4.  My grandfather (who is an Annapolis grad) explained that we pulled for the team with stars on their helmets because Roger Staubach was a Navy grad.  We lost.  I remained a Cowboys fan.  By the time I was old enough to follow the game on my own it was the early 80's (The Cacth is the first game I remember actual plays from).  We were the team that almost made it.  We had a run like the Eagles.  But I left each season thinking we would be better next year -- maybe I was just too young to know better.

THEN WE LOST TO THE RAMS 20-0.  It was clear even to me we were on the decline.  The next three years were bad.  Steve Pelleur bad.  But once we went 3-13 we had to be getting better.  After all, we still had Tom Landry.  Oops.

JONES BOUGHT THE TEAM.  Tom was fired.  I was crushed.  I hoped the NFL owners would not approve the deal.  They did. I was devastated... But we got Troy.  And Steve? Huh? At least things weren't boring.  I became a draftnik.  Our Coach / GM Jimmy Johnson got enough draft picks to make it  full time job. We were on the upswing. We became dominant.  Drafts became a bit less interesting, but Jimmy's wheeling and dealing kept things interesting -- until he flew to close to the sun.

IN THE TIME IT TOOK TO SAY DYNASTY, THINGS CAME CRASHING DOWN.  Jimmy out Barry in. Wow. Jerry became GM.  Noooooo.  We went from having a coach who got in Steve Young's head to a coach who bumped officials.  We went from a guy who made the difference to a guy who cost us games.  Things spun apart S L O W L Y.  It was like watching Tyson come unglued after he fired Rooney.  Still, we always had a puncher's shot and the offseason mattered. I still can feel the waves of shock at passing on Randy Moss.   He reminded of that by ending our season in 1999 and letting us know our run was over.

THEN CAMPO GOT HIS CHANCE.  Things got so bad so fast that it was easy to watch the offseason.  Parity was sinking in.  Teams made big swings and we had high draft picks -- three years in a row.

PARCELLS TOOK OVER.  After 9 years of steady decline under the rule of JJ - GM his control was compromised.  The team got younger.  The team got better.  The draft was important because we were rebuilding.  It was important because we had a great eye for talent churning the roster. It was exciting because we were getting close.

WADE TOOK OVER.  Jerry got more involved. After making Parcells the second coach since Landry who could hire and fire assistants, JJ hired Garrett as HC or OC (he wasn't sure) then kept interviewing to see if he could find a HC to sit over him (as much as a boss can command people he can't hire or fire).  Jerry went about building the best staff he could (provided he hired former Dallas Assistants).  Houck and Campo "came home".  But we got better, I pretended things would be ok.  Last offseason was fascinating because we had a few holes to plug.  The team looked like a fantasy lineup. WE WERE GETTING CLOSE.

THEN REALITY HIT.  There is a reason teams don't build fantasy lineups.  This may look like an All Star team, but it plays like a group of All Stars with no concept of team.  The flaws seem real.  It's hard to tell who the good guys are - Ware, Ratliff, anyone, Beuler? Beuler? Some of our best guys MAY be problem guys: Flo, Newman, James, Romo, maybe even Witten.  The potential problem players are signed to long-term contracts.   The team seems to hate each other.

I FEAR THERE IS NO QUICK FIX.  A coaching change / transfer of control could work wonders but isn't a near-term reality.  Meanwhile the team has gone from young to not so young.  Give Jerry/Wade 09 and then hire another coach and give hime a year to make changes and it's 2011 before we can hope to be great.  The team can do it, but it won't be a young team ready to make a run, it will be an older team that hasn't had a pick in the top half of the draft for seven years.  What looked like a potential dynasty may be lucky to get to one superbowl.  We are no longer young (and aging), we are signing old players, we are giving up draft picks, we are making decisions reserved for teams that must win now but we have a locker room that can't win.  We are locking those guys into long term contracts.   Meanwhile Pittsburgh beats us to six by being a well run organization.

AS DEPRESSING AS IT IS, I THINK THE OUTLOOK FOR THE TEAM IS AS BLEAK AS THE OUTLOOK FOR THE ECONOMY.  I hope I irrationally depressed.  I hope I am selling the lows.  I hope the team plays to its talent, but this feels like the first step of a multi year decline.  I fear I am looking forward to years of watching frustrating games.  I just can't get psyched up for the offseason because I feel like the organization is covering rust with spray paint.

Is anyone else this un-enthused?

i so feel your pain, 325424, however...

…i do believe that da King has continued to apply Parcells personnel philosophies such as:

signing proven vets to short-term contracts in position need areas AND drafting another player who plays the same position during that same offseason

applying scouts’ recommendations more now during in recent drafts than in drafts prior to the pre-Parcells era

But i am still disappointed and still concerned with the lack of discipline and accountability under the Son of Bum.

And i am disgusted with the cheap-ass publicity with these stupid-ass sideshows along with the players foot-in-the-mouth soundbites that don’t reflect well on the team.

I’m cautiously optimistic that this gag order among coaches might extend to the current players, as well… knock on wood, cross my fingers, throw salt over my shoulder.

By the way, IMHO, the one bright side to a season ending with such a letdown is speculating on what the team needs to do to improve for the following season.

Well expressed post here, sir.

Both of you make valid points, things I have tried hard to forget this offseason. I am not overly optimistic for next season but I think a 10-6 record and a wild card spot are realistic goals given the young talent (El gato, Choice, Ware) on our team.

I think to maintain your sanity as a fan, you have to believe things are going to get better. If someone looked into the future and told me that next season will end as badly as the last one, i would suddenly have a lot of time to fill for the next several months. So, I hope that Jerry and wade can improve some things and that Redball can start showing some evidence of his “boy genius” tag.

After all, sometimes hope is all you have.

Well said SB5

You just about covered everything except getting a real football person to control the football operations. That alone might solve a lot of the problems.

Thank you so much. I think we are about the same age (I’m 37) so reading your history of being a Cowboy fan over the past 25 years really hits home. I remember Steve Pelleur (and Kevin Sweeney for that matter) all too well. Unfortunatly I share your perspective about the upcoming years. With the exception of Jerry stepping back and relinquishing control to Stephen I fear that we will have more years of mediocrity in the near future. Our window was very brief this time around and now appears to be on the downside.

I know the feeling

When we lost to the giants in the playoffs in Jan 2008….I was in a state of shock! I felt unfulfilled….I never got over it….I went from FA signings to studying the draft….Hell I took time off from work to watch the combine…..then the draft….LOL…the season never really ended for me!
This year however, I could really care less!
Don’t get me wrong…I’ll have my tickets for the opener in september…..But the cowboys gotta show me they care as much as I do…..LOL…I feel like a jilted lover….now I’m jaded and bitter

You remind me of a bit that Mike Taylor from 760 in San Antonio likes to do. He uses the same

analogy, during last year he started this after dallas lost in NY to the gints. He said that he would no longer answer the door to the booty call of the team turning it around he wanted to see some real results first. So when dallas thumped the gints at home a caller played off this analogy and talked about how he did answer the door and let them back in and it was awesome, they were in the kitchen, in the bed, the living room it was a full on booty call of a fan wanting to believe in the team again. Mike responds (while laughing) that he was going to regret that decision.

Just to be clear it was an analogy to personify the belief in the team to that girlfriend who you always let back into your life only to regret it the next day.

I'm in the same boat, but I have a life vest tightly snapped on....

Everything you said stands for me also, with the added bonus of going to Texas Stadium FOR THE ONLY TIME IN MY LIFE! (Fan longer than you, I’m 47), and PURPOSELY GETTING TICKETS TO THE LAST GAME EVER IN THE STADIUM! because wouldn’t that be SO COOL! And sitting there watching this team implode like the stadium is going to soon, in the most

surrealistic

f’ing football game ever. How do you not once but TWICE give up backbreaking 90 yard runs for TD’s??

Do you think I’m still bitter??

The life vest? This is the NFL, where parity means never having to say you’re out of it. I dislike parity, having grown up in the good old days of quality football and epic battles between Great Teams, but it works, and the Cowboys are closer to those 2 SB teams than most other teams are.
We have a QB who, if he’s taught right and allowed to play a style right for him, can take this team far.
So, while I don’t EXPECT things to change soon, like you, I also realize we’re not really that far from SB appearance # 9. Hope springs eternal.
Maybe it comes from being a Cubs fan too…..

As long as Romo is under center

I’ll always believe in this team as my signature indicates.

Get over that hump

I have followed this team for longer than I’ll ever admit and I’ll just give you a short analogy. You’re on the worlds longest roller coaster ride if you’re a fan. This team will take you almost to the top and the next thing you know you’re screaming full speed downhill again. But what NFL fan doesn’t get this ride? Now here’s the clincher. Every now and then, they actually stop this roller coaster at the very top at the highest point and let you enjoy the view for minute. And it’s an awesome view, you can see for miles. They don’t do it very often but you stay on the ride for hours and hours on the chance that it will happen. And if you’re a Dallas Cowboy fan, it does happen, it has happened, and it will happen again. Keep the faith and you will be eventually rewarded.

by Benthere on Mar 1, 2009 10:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

i like the analogy

and you can’t predict what’s around the next bend, with the Cowboys as with all teams in this league, they can be up one year and down the next, and when you and everyone thinks they know what’s going to happen you can be surprised one way or the other. We’ve got some real issues but we’ve got very real great potential as well, so only time will tell.

I guess overall I care a bit less this season after being so disappointed. you almost have to develop some detachment for when things are down. and i have been posting here less during my sort of grief and recovery period lol. but as free agency rolls around and mock drafts start coming out, I’m still interested, still reading here every day, and forever hopeful that next season we’ll get to see the view from the top.

I have been wondering why I’m not committing so much time this year. A year ago I would have been commenting to almost every post and on BTB and every other Cowboys website all day long. I still read all of the posts, but hardly comment anymore and very rarely even read the comments. I still love the ‘Boys but I’m just having a hard time getting back into the swing of things.

I think that anyone who reads this blog

and/or regularly posts comments, are just fooling themselves if they think they aren’t already excited about next season and cannot wait to see what the 2009 Cowboys will look like. I know last season was a huge let down, and 2007 was even worse, but hope springs eternal for the die hard fan. You might not be at a 10 on the scale of excitement yet, but it is only March 2nd, and you are already reading this comment.

(Hey, if nothing else, you know this team is capable of big things next season, and the new stadium is going to blow other stadiums away.)

Amen

I hate to keep pointing it out, as if I’m trying to spin our bad season and make it sound less frustrating, but even the Cardinals played terribly in December. Dallas honestly WASN’T that far from being where we thought they would be.

Don’t get me wrong, I still think Jerry is crazy. I still think he’s capable of making terrible decisions, but to give the guy some props, he really has made two very sound decisions this early in free agency. Upgraded two positions, saving money in doing so. This, to me, indicates he may have learned from his mistakes, including those made earlier in the off season.

But yeah, we could have gone 0-16 and I’d still be excited and optimistic about this year. Parity rules the league. They at least have the pieces in place, as far as talent goes, to make a strong push for a SB.

Epic Fail since 1985

It is just very tough to be a Cowboys fan these days, as some people have hinted at. With the goofiness that goes on inside JJs head, the he-said he-said we had this last year in the locker room, dearth of post season success in the last 12 years, a neutered head coach, and the terrible signings we’ve had forced upon us, I can see why someone would be apathetic towards the off season.

I’m actually glad there is no Cowboys football right now. I need to get over all the anxiety this team caused last year.

I do look forward to OTAs and mini-camps to get going, though. Who knows…maybe Jones will have the right combination. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time…

I completely agree 325424

I have never felt this level of malaise since…..I guess the late 1980’s.

Compared to this time last season:

I have lost a lot of my faith in Jerry Jones. He is the leader of this team and it seems like the squad is a bunch of selfish individuals instead of a team. I don’t like how he undermines the head coach.

At the close of last season I felt like we were one of the top 3 teams from a talent measure. No longer – I think we are somewhere between 10-15.

My view of Tony Romo has decreased significantly since this time last season. I no longer think of him as a Franchise Quarterback. I now think of Romo as a guy with franchise quarterback ability, but one who must change his ways to realize that ability – and I see no reason to believe he will change.

It sucks not having a first round draft pick.

Yeah, I’m on board with your general malaise. It sort of mirrors the way the economy, the financial markets and society in general are going right now – just blah. I really need a tropical vacation, and for the first time in years I’m stuck in Wisconsin all winter because we now have two very small children and it’s tough to get away.

Good Article

I think I’m starting to get back in the swing of things, but the end of the year definitly was a clunker.

Every team disappoints now and then.

Fortunatly and unfortunatly, anyone who was watching Dallas that’s at least in their mid twenties or older is spoiled.

It seems like every year there is a team that does really good and then the next they have a so-so year.

I’m hoping that this is our so-so year and there is a big bounce back.

Afterall even with all the analyzing, as a fan all you can really do is hope.

Dallas makes me act like Christian Bale......
