My sleeper of the week series. 3-4 DE
More than likely to a fault, I probably spend nearly half my awoken life browsing the web. Most of that time is spent blogging here on BTB, but I also venture off and check out transactions, other team needs, and daily sports news, trade rumors, etc. etc...My passion is, and always has been evaluating prospects for the NFL draft.
From what I see, there are quite a few very knowledgable draft/player savvy guys on this site, which is why I come here to discuss football with mature, intelligent people that can share ideas, opinions, info that may not be found elsewhere.........I'm in no way the final authority on all things draft...My opinions and views of certain players may certainly differ from some of yours, and I repect that....But if I can enlighten just one reader, and provide interesting info that someone may appreciate, it's worth it to me.
I may totally disagree with rankings of a Mayock, McShay, or Kiper, but it doesn't make me wrong, or them right.....I have called out many many many gem prospects over the years, long before any one of them were on board, or even mentioned these players, (CB-Dominique Rodgers Cromartie, from last year for instance)......This is no exact science, and they have much much more time and resources invested than me. But I don't go jumping on the bandwagon of already established, nationally known players cuz that's too easy....It's going out on a limb, and finding totally unknowns, that possess NFL caliber measurables, and intangibles that seperates the good from the also rans.
I'm going to try some new things leading up to the draft this season. I've decided just producing a Mock Draft won't really cut it this year. We don't have two 1st rounders to speculate over, and up until just a few days ago, we had some glaring holes that could've had our first pick #51 overall going in a number of directions. We have way too many picks and variables to conclude just where we'll be picking, and how many picks we'll end up having.
I'm going to present a completely unknown player (to the average fan), that you probably never heard about (via media coverage), but has all the physical tools, ability, and athleticism to be an NFL player, and will more than likely go in the later rounds or completely undrafted, with no fan fare leading up to his selection. With a little time and developement, will become decent NFL player or even an All Pro. That's what I call a sleeper..
OK....I realize we just recently signed Igor Olshanski (great move... btw), and we have the likes of Spears, Ratliff, Hatcher, Bowen, and a lesser known in Dixon playing the DE position here in Dallas. Problem is, Spears will more than likely command as much money as Canty after this upcoming season, and franchising him is not an option. Bowen, if not signed to a long term extention will also test the free agent market after this season is over. Hatcher has yet stood up and grabbed a hold of a position that was his to take, and seems like a in the rotation, but won't be a starter guy. Ratliff we all know should be out at DE, but until we shore up the NT, that switch won't be happening. Dixon is a marginal talent, that may develope over the next year or two on the practice squad..,,,
I believe there are quite a few projected 3-4 DE in this upcoming draft, In fact, it's probably one of the deepest positions for 3-4 teams out there...These are guys maybe leaner, a bit taller, usually quicker DT's that will be considered for a switch outside to DE in a 3-4...There are very few 280lbs plus DE's that play in traditional 4-3 college defenses, as you all surely know...anyways......I was doing my daily rounds the other day, and came across this Pro Day evaluation of a D Lineman that I thought was so off the charts, I needed to share it with somebody...lol...Lucky You Guys...
The guy is Desmond Bryant- DE - Harvard University.
Only 22 career starts - 12 Sacks, 19 Tackles for Loss
All Ivy League
Ivy League takes no Dummy's- Majored in Psychology (this team needs smarts)
Recorded Best Bench Press of All Time at Harvard Football (520lbs)
6' 5"5/8 288lbs.- perfect size for 3-4 DE
11.5 inch hands - Would have rated biggest at NFL Combine-huge asset for DE
35.5" Arm Length- Would have rated longest at NFL Combine-huge asset for DE.
225lbs Bench - 35 times / with 35"+ arms? That is super human, best of Combine.
4.92 40 yard- 4th fastest time among D Linemen over 285lbs.
2.82 20 yard- same time as 2-3rd round prospect Dorell Scott, and better BJ Raji.
1.67 10 yard- better than 1st rd 3-4 DE Tyson Jackson.
31" Verticle Jump- 21/2" better than 1st round 3-4 DE Tyson Jackson.
9' 10" Broad Jump- Would have rated #1 Down linemen at NFL Combine.
4.45 20 yd Shuttle- Better than first day-QB-Stafford, WR Britt, TE-Casey, DE-Kruger
7.44 3 Cone- Better than 1st day prospects -
DT-Raji, OLB-Maybin, DT-Hood, DE- Ayers, DE- Gilbert, DE-Jackson, DE- Kruger
Workout Warrior or Once Hidden Gem ? That's the Question...

What the French?! Toast!
I'm not a scout, but played one on TV
TMI on the personal side.
Great stuff on the personnel side.

paragraph breaks, dude
use them. Your text is so hard to wade through, I didn’t.
You know
that’s the hardest thing for me when it comes to writing. When to start a new paragraph. It’s so hard to not just put it into one big column.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.
Nice write up
Since he’s not well known, his draft stock is almost non-existent, right? Or perhaps just a late round player, if that? If so, I’d certainly take a look. The numbers alone are pretty impressive.
Epic Fail since 1985
when you're checking out qb sleepers
check out that Boltus kid from Hardwick, I’m telling you he’s a diamond in the rough.
In Romo we Trust
I really like hearing from
someone with more experience because I’m basically a rookie at the scouting process but enjoy doing it in my spare time, if only I had more of it. Your sleeper picks will be greatly appreciated

QB UDFA possibility
Also check out the QB from Ohio State, Todd Boeckman. I thought he played well with protoypical size and stats, but got benched for the high school phenom running QB, Pryor. I think Boeckman got too much blame for the USC game. His benching is the reason Robiskie’s numbers were down this year compared to last year.
Hope we do find a sleeper
Because I’m crossing Sen’Derrick Marks off my list. He did 16 reps of 225 at his pro day.
I can do more than that, no thanks.
Pour out some liquor for the homie T.O.

lol...yeah...Sen' Marks was foolish to come out early.....He's got more than just strength issues going against him..
He’ll still go top 3-5 rounds, but could have been a 1st rounder next year if he showed up for next season ready to redeem himself.
I actually saw this guys name on a position ratings chart somewhere
can’t remember the draft board site but remember the school and 40 time. Would be an intriguing pick in a later round.
Nice info
Looks like an interesting project pick. My question is, being so physically gifted, why didn’t he dominate more in the Ivy League? 2nd team All Ivy League is actually a bit disappointing for someone like this. Only 1.5 sacks?
If there was some reason for this, like he was inexperienced, injured, etc, than he seems like a great sleeper. Otherwise, I’m not sure how he’ll fare against linemen of a far higher caliber than the Ivy League.
That's my whole point...This is what a "Sleeper" is....
He did not play in 2007, suspended from the team for undisclosed infraction……He is not listed among 750 draft eligible players….
But scout rep’s from 6 teams watched his Pro Day…trust me..This guy is being talked about…The skill numbers he put up, and his measurables rank in the top 10 in the country…

Well...
that isn’t exactly true. The scouts go out and look at players not just to draft, but to sign as undrafted free agents.
This guy will likely not get drafted unless someone takes a late second day flyer on him.

What's not true ? Did I say he was going to be drafted anywhere ?
This guy will likely not get drafted unless someone takes a late second day flyer on him.
Translation: This guy won’yt be drafted unless some team drafts him…ok..I gotcha
sorta like Ratliff ?

Good find and nice write up
Looking forward to some more of your sleeper profiles.
Feb. 27 -- Veteran free agency signing period begins. Trading period begins.
April 25-26 -- NFL Draft
Where is Jarron Gilbert slotted to go right now??
He put up some good stats last year against the competition he faced and has the size and speed to do the job.

Another one is Clinton McDonald. I love how draftcountdown.com has those little videos at the bottom of the scouting report.

Gilbert looks like a 2nd at worst
Maybe even close to the 1st.

+1 prior to the combine, and before we replaced Canty, DE- Jarron Gilbert was going to be my choice for our # 51....
But he has moved into the top 50 for sure, and as Tom mentions, He may go late first round to a 3-4 team…SD ?

Miami is looking hard at him...

Clinton McDonald
Looks like another sleeper…he is a little short but he has the bulk to play 3-4 DE
by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 13, 2009 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions
I like McDonald and have studied him quite a bit....I had him as a late 6th-7th prospect, and his height does leave him less desirable at 3-4 DE
But he sure can play….He’s a poor man’s Mitch King-DE out of Iowa…..A great player, undersized at DT, and a tad short to be an ideal 3-4 DE, Mitch King is a force, and I can see him being a situational pass rusher on the outside like Ellis, with his relentless pursuit, speed, strength, and high motor, he can play for me anyday..He will go mid 3rd-early 4th though…

He's definitely rising
Great workouts and great stats=high pick. He had a TFL in every game last year except 2, and in one of those he had 1/2 of a TFL. The best team he played against last year, Boise St., he had 4 TFL’s and 2 sacks. That’s pretty good.
