Another sign that Romo is not yet a leader
Jerry brings Romo and Witten with him to an event but reporters were not allowed to speak to either of them.
That speaks volumes.
If you are going to be the leader of this team, that means doing the uncomfortable stuff. It's not just about hooking up with ditsy starlets, getting promotion deals, and doing celebrity events. What does a true leader do? Peyton Manning was on vacation when Marvin Harrison was released. What did he do?
That says, I am the leader of this football team, and if something should be said, I'm going to say it. You show up at an event and hide behind Jerry Jones? How does that make guys in the locker room want to follow you? If he had just said "Terrell had some good years here, we wish him well. We're excited about our football team and the upcoming year." - then refused to answer any more questions for the rest of night, it would have gone a long way towards establishing that you indeed are a leader.
Being a leader comes at a price. It means you can't be seen around town in a bunch of clubs with a drunken starlet girlfriend. You are the face of a franchise. Tom Brady is a bigger star than Romo and his wife is a bigger global star than Jessica Simpson. How often do you see photos of Tom Brady at some bar with Giselle wasted? How often do you see pictures of them out period? If you do, it's a picture of them getting in a cab and that's about it.
Being a leader is about respect. You gain respect by doing the things you don't want to do but need to get done.
Here's a little story. When I was a young man, I worked at Target. The national management was coming to audit our store and there was a lot of cleaning/grunt work to be done. The only time to do it was early on a Sunday morning before the store opened. All the assistant managers scheduled us peons to come clean up on Sunday morning, but they were not going to be there.
When I arrived, I saw the actual store manager was there already and had already been cleaning up before we got there. Not supervising, but doing the grunt work. After a few hours he told us we could go and we could take the day off for pitching in. He was going to stay and continue cleaning up the back room. The fact that he was there doing the crap work - before we go there and willing to keep doing it after we left - made an impression on all of us. Almost all of us turned down the day off and kept working with him. We would have followed him anywhere.
Romo could take some lessons from my former manager
Jerry is going out of his way to make Romo the team leader. If Jerry has to inform the team that Romo is the leader, then he isn't going to be the leader. A true leader has men follow him naturally, not because Jerry said so.

did you really turn this into "romo isn't a leader"

what makes him a leader is showing up at the complex multiple weeks in advance practicing with his wr’s (r williams esp.)

Scandrick and JJ have both stated that Romo, RW, and MA have been at the facility
practicing together since the begining of this month. I do believe that he will be under great scrutiny this year, especially if TO lights it up in Buff. Romo working with his receivers this offseason as of this month is what is more important than answering questions about a player that is no longer on the team. What is the hurry to get his opinion on the subject, he has no authority on what the coaches and JJ decides to do with the cuts or signings they made. Romo coming out to speak about TO will do nothing for next year, it will only feed the media machine. The team understands now that Romo is the focus of the offense, the guy who has to lead them; he needs to show it during the offseason to gain his teammate’s trust that he can in fact lead them; not by holding press conferences.

this is great news
Your post is the first reference that I have read indicating that Romo has been at Valley Ranch this off-season working on improving his game and showing leadership. Not that I doubt your veracity…..but so you have any links that I could get more information on this? This is very welcome news.

Check out quincyy's fanpost on scandrick, one of JJ inteviews that is on DMN blog
This past weeks talking cowboys have all made mention of Romo and RW working together this month.

Interesting
that you see Romo as not being a leader and then you tell us a story about your former manager. The way I see it Romo is exactly the same type of leader your manager was, by all accounts no one spends more time at the Ranch than Tony does, he puts in more hours of practice and film review than anyone on the team. That is exactly what your manager was doing, everyone sees Tony putting in the extra effort and thinks, “if he can do it, so can I” If you had told a story where your manager got you guys all pumped up with some speech or great pre-game talk than I can see how he and Tony would be viewed differently, but that is not the case.
I don’t care if he talks to the press or not, personally I like that he didn’t talk to anyone, we have far too many players talking to the press. On top of that if Jerry asked them not to, than it was the right move. If your boss asks you not to talk to someone, then what would you do?
I hope that he becomes a driving force on this team and develops his leadership skills MORE but this doesn’t highlight his lack of leadership at all. Sorry but in my humble opinion you are way off base on this one.
First to six!!!
hey emoon, get a clue
Romo and Witten were both instructed by Jones that they weren’t allowed to speak to the media.
Try reading before you mouth off untrue statements.
In Romo we Trust
not at all
he said Romo choose not to speak, I said he was instructed not to speak…very big difference.
In Romo we Trust
Besides Tony already addressed the TO issue in a very PC way.
He said that “of course you want everyone to come back”, he rode the middle to keep his personal preferences out of the decision making process that the team coaches and JJ were conducting. I remember that early in the offseason we as fans were scoffing at the changes they were going to make, now the moves the team has made show they were serious about making changes, in what FA they pursued, what FA they would like to keep, and what players they felt did not fit the team’s goals for next year.

You confuse
Working to improve your own performance and leading your team.
Can you imagine Troy Aikman or Michael Irvin hiding behind Jerry?
I applaud him for working on his own performance. That does nothing about leading this team. That leadership vacuum will be taken up by someone else – Bradie James, T New, etc.
Jerry’s paying him to be the face of the franchise. Time for him to start acting like it. He’ll be 29 years old this year. Not 22. He’s not some young kid. Roethlisberger is 27. He came in and became a leader on his team as a rookie. By his third year he was THE leader on his team. He doesn’t duck anyone.
And look at how he interacts with his team. You never see him just sulking alone on the bench.
No excuses for Romo. Time for him to act and perform up to his contract.
who is ducking o clueless one?
here’s the quote from Brain Davis
As mentioned before, Tony Romo, Jason Witten and Felix Jones were with Jones on the trip. However, even the AP noted that Romo and Witten were not allowed to speak to the media
Romo has never ducked from the media, never has, never will.
In Romo we Trust
Umm,
You think if Romo said he wanted to make a quick statement Jerry would have said no?
Lots of other players have spoken in the last couple weeks. Lots. Nothing from your “leader”.
Stop making excuses for him. It’s not helping him.
Bill wouldn’t and didn’t make excuses for him. Time for him to man up.
thats exactly what happened
Its called a gag order and I’m sure Newman will be told about his comments from Mr Jones if he hasn’t already done so.
I’m not making excuses for anyone, I’m just not a hater.
In Romo we Trust
I'm just glad to see Terry fighting with someone besides me.....LOL
good luck emoon3-I’m teasing guys so don’t attack me okay?
Well, the response was somewhat predictable don't you think
Anything except “Romo is a first ballot HOF’er” pretty much gets the same response from 1 poster.

We can agree to disagree
I am not going to get into time consuming threads discussing the fine points of leadership and who’s opinion is more correct. Romo is working with his WR early in the offseason, because he no longer has TO the WR focus changes, he is not practicing with them so he can just work on his accuracy. Romo needs to be familiar with them so when they implement their offense during OTAs and TC the process will move that much faster. I used that as an example to mirror your manager example, you manager did not say anything about coming in early you found him there, well Romo is not advertising the fact that he is already working on 09. My opinion is simple, he is working now to be ready to work on the offense that is going require his leadership. The players will respond to how he carries himself on the field. I will concede your point if during the season he doesn’t look to be taking a more ascertive role, but right now he is doing what he needs to do.
Just to clarify, I am not making excuses for Romo, I believe this year is critical for his future, nor am I guranteeing that he will be successful this year because he is the focus of the offense. I feel he is doing what needs to be done now; talking to the media does not accomplish much.
Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!
Yeah but his assension to leadership didnt have the enormus personality of TO in the locker room either.
Eli had trouble taking those reigns with Tiki in the lockerroom.
thats exactly right
T.O. became too powerful within both the locker room and organization. His release will help Romo tremendously in all areas.
In Romo we Trust
I didn't realize he faltered
90+ qb rating seems pretty good to me. If you’re talking about making the playoffs, the team faltered, you win and lose as a team.
In Romo we Trust
Comparing Romo and TO and Manning and Harrison is an reach.
Manning and Harrison grew up together, played 10 years together, were constantly throwing together, won a SB together. They also never threw one another or coaches under the bus. Their relationship was way longer, completely different and built on mutual respect over a long period of time. Both tireless workers. How exactly is that similar to Romo and TOs relationship other that QB to WR.
Secondly, Manning has been taught media savvy since he could walk by his Dad. Whether or not Manning loved of hated Harrison, his media response would have been the same. (I believe it was heartfelt but why the need for media attention) Manning is a walking cliche with each media response meticulously calculated.(make no mistake about that) He knows exactly how phrase everything and in actuallity is a boring programed response interviewee.
I love when guys make statements that he was paid to be the face of the franchise. WTF!? He is paid to win games, playoffs and SBs. If Jerry ,who pays him and determines who should be the face, has decided he wants him to lay low then he is actually doing what the man who pays him is asking him to do. Again he is taking orders.
Why is it that every player and coach and fan know the importance of taking time off to recharge your battery, improve weaknesses of your game and get away from the hoopla for a couple of months. Then suddenly get amneshia and turn around and bitch when he is doing exactly what he should doing. Its the freaking offseason. Give him a break. Its us the fans who dont seem to be able to take a break in the offseason and then get mad at them for not filling our need.
Dude I 100% do not give a sh$t if Romo talks to the f@#$ing media…
I care about him improving on his touchdown to interception ratio. Look at the Patriots for example; they never talk with or say anything to the media. You never hear Tom Brady making grandiose statements about former players or anything else for that matter.
This whole leadership BS is just that… BS.
It’s a team game and I’ve always felt like fans that place so much value and concern on who the "leaders" are when analyzing their favorite team are missing the much more important aspects of what it actually takes to win a football game.
This sort of analysis can be filed right next to Entertainment Tonight’s analysis of who wore what on the red carpet in my humble opinion; or anything else tabloid in nature.
0 = The number of Super Bowls the Eagles have won.
finally
a sane comment. Thanks gee-roj. I’m sure the team really doesnt care if he speaks to the obnoxious media fishing for juicy answers. Players are allowed to say no comment sometimes arent they? If he’s already working with his wr’s that speaks volumes and really all that matters. Man, this dude will never live down that Cabo thing
Good to see everyone realizing what a bunch of baloney opinions like this are.

What does this say about Wade?
He was told by the boss not to talk as well. How is he going to lead this team since he cannot talk to the media? No leader at coach or QB……this team is screwed!
This has nothing to do with Romo’s leadership capabilities. It’s March emoon3. Relax…
I do find it extremely bizarre that Romo and Witten are being coddled, and not allowed to interact or make comments to the media...
Gag order or not, obviously several Cowboy members have spoken over the past few weeks…It’s going to be quite the season I’ll tell ya.
Are they being coddled or is JJ just taking the heat.
Those guys get more face time than the rest combined. Can you imagine being asked questions constantly and the questions the same ones over and over. This is march. If this continues in Sept then its time to worry.
I agree or it's "+1" I guess
It looks like they’re being used like Charlie McCarthy dolls. They were used as props. If there’s such a gag order that they can’t utter a word, their role was to come and stand behind him like a potted plants? That wouldn’t work for me. If my boss came to me and told me he wanted me to come along but that I couldn’t open my mouth, I would respectfully decline.
by StillHateTheGiants on Mar 15, 2009 8:46 AM CDT up reply actions
On One Hand
…I can see how Jerry’s “gag order” serves a purpose in getting Dallas off of the ESPN First Take, Cold Pizza, Mike and Mike and…and any other glitzy NFL-centric segments they showcase.
On the other hand, I can also see how it is a bit Draconian and perhaps unwittingly makes Winnie the Coach, Romo and Witten seem like children who are not allowed to talk to strangers.
My take is somewhere in the middle; Jerry needed to circle the wagons in Dallas because the star was being tarnished by all the ongoing locker room idiocy coupled with poor on-field performance. At the same time, Coach, QB and other stars need to be able to garner the trust of the organization by avoiding unwanted scrutiny while responding intelligently to the media’s pertinent questions about their profession.
As for the original post and the story about your old boss, the contention that Romo isn’t a leader because he was following the insturctions that came from HIS boss is groundless. You can cite some defensible reasons to challenge Romo’s leadership (the media and many BTB’ers already have) of this team both on and off the field, but this is just not one of them.
"Well, we didn't block real good but we made up for it by not tackling."
- John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
This team is and has been on a 12 game schedule..
Long before Romo became the QB. I don’t know why. Last year they bumped it up to 15 games (and yes I’m aware they lost all but the Giants game in Dec) but I felt they were at least playing/trying…till Philly.
Only the first 2 lines make any sense at all
After that you completely lost me. Trying to justify a weak position using another QB with a polar opposite path to starting in the NFL, followed by some story about a manager at Target? Seriously, a retail store manager!
Okay, so back to your first 2 lines. It does speak volumes but not about Romo, about Jones. JJ has been using bad judgment more than usual since the Tuna left. It’s a shame that he didn’t have more respect for Reeves, who could be in his ear preventing some of these poor decisions.
It’s clear there is only one leader for this team. And that’s the way Jerry wants it. Until this recent trend passes you can not put the lack of leadership tag on anyone else in the organization because that’s how it’s being run from the top. Romo could be doing all he can within the limits placed on him and you would not know anything about it. So all we can do as fans is support our QB as best we can.
"In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable." - Dwight D. Eisenhower
This is funny
Is there any founded reason to hate Romo and Witten so much? At least T.O.’s BS was easy to call out. All of the Romo/Witten haters are seriously reaching for any little hint to bash them on.
Bash the guy’s play, that’s fine. Romo is almost the polar opposite of his playmaking September through November form come December. He throws a grotesque amount of picks. There. Your next fanpost, gift wrapped. But this delusional “Guy’s a terrible leader! He hates T.O. Between him and Witten, we have rats trying to run the team!” nonsense is getting ridiculous. It’s one conspiracy theory after another from the T.O. camp here.
Move on. Romo is the starting quarterback. We love him sometimes and we hate him at other times. Like it or not, he IS the leader of this team. Has been. He’s always the guy who gets blamed when the team loses, always the reason we have a chance to win. I for one think he’ll make a more positive leader than say…I dunno’…T.O. He’s less egocentric, less obnoxious, seemingly more intelligent, DEFINITELY more well-spoken, and younger. We’ll be in much better shape with him at the helm, leading players.
Epic Fail since 1985
Yeah,
It is a little bit strange isn’t it? Their are some people on here who will find a way to criticize Romo and Witten no matter what they do. I still don’t understand were all the hostility comes from.
It's not really that difficult to figure out
People are frustrated by the lack of success of the team in the playoffs or even getting there. The frustration will be directed somewhere. High profile players will get more than their share of the glory when they win (as Romo has) and blame when they lose. It’s very normal.
On top of that, there are other posters who have such man crushes on some players that they can’t acknowledge even the slightest legitimate criticisms of their favorite players. Those kind of posters bring on over extreme reactions from others.

Emoon3,
How you equate being a leader with yapping to the media I’ll never understand. The problem with this team is that too many people were and are talking to the media. If Romo and Witten have had enough of the media drama and just want to work on becoming better players than that’s just the sort of leadership this team needs.
Your ongoing unfounded attacks on two of the teams best and hardest working players is really reaching bizarre proportions.
I also hate how Witten has gotten constantly lumped into the T.O. drama.
I hate rats as much as anybody but even if Witten was “the mole” he’s got quite the ways to go before he equals T.O.’s body of work as a douchebag.
Romo's teammates
Questioned his work ethic so I wouldn’t call him one of the hardest workers. And by all accounts, neither of them had near the work ethic of TO.
Everyone is saying Romo need to lead the team, get in player’s faces, etc. The right to get in one of these guys faces is earned.
You don’t earn it by being on TMZ constantly.
As my friend (and Jets fan) said “Why are you guys tryign to make Romo into a leader. He’s best when he just has fun and plays. He’s not a leader. Let someone else do it.” I agree.
But if he’s going to be a leader, then he needs to really be one. Hiding behind Jerry isn’t leadership.
No one questioned his work ethic
I would love to see the quote on that one. I remember someone saying that he needed to practice better, that his practices weren’t efficient, but not that he didn’t work hard. I think you just made that one up.
So you think he doesn’t need to be a leader, but went out on a crusade to prove that he isn’t one? That makes no sense at all, why did you even try to stir all this up?
First to six!!!
Here's the quote
According to five sources, several offensive players lost respect for Garrett for his failure to corral quarterback Tony Romo in practice. Romo, sources said, often forced throws in practice and often did not treat practice work consistently.
The quarterback’s practice habits were so bad, sources said, that they affected the way he played in games and could have factored into the offense’s problems.
Just what I said
this isn’t about his work ethic, this is saying he wasn’t practicing efficiently, not that we wasn’t working hard. IMO two very different issues, but maybe I’m just splitting hairs
First to six!!!
hmmmm....doesn't say he wasn't working hard ??
often did not treat practice work consistently.
sounds like he wasn’t working hard in practice to me…….which usually translates to games…

Maybe Romo’s biggest fan in the media says in her article today…
A big-time player needs to fill that gigantic leadership void left by T.O. In a positive, non-backstabby way, of course.
This player probably needs to be Romo.
OK, this player definitely has to be Romo.
And this means being a face (which is what T.O. was) and bringing real leadership (which T.O. didn’t).
and
And while Romo and his BFF Jason Witten have been dodging any comment, most recently Thursday while accompanying Jerry to a charity function in Arkansas, what is needed is a generic, PC response like, “I wish him all the best,”
Why does he
have to wish TO all the best? Generic, pc. blah blah…Romos no different than any other qb that played with that crybaby. It always ends up the same. Good luck Trent Edwards
can't understand how commenting on T.O.
has anything to do with leadership, makes absolutely no sense at all to me.
In Romo we Trust
that made no sense
if he is not appeasing the masses then he is not a leader? that’s leadership for the fans. if he is practicing, working hard and thinking about next year already as has been reported, then he is being a leader. you don’t need to have public speaking engagements to be a leader. plus don’t forget as much as he may want to speak, Jerry has put in a gag order and probably has talked to witten and romo before and after TO release. sometimes the less said the better, specially if no matter what you say will be taken out of context and blown out by the media.
sorry if romo is not appeasing you. you just have to wait.
