What About Signing Torry Holt?

Up until this past season Torry Holt has been one of the most consistet recievers in the league. He had a streak of 8 straight 1180+ yd seasons. This year his team was an awful 2-14 (1 of those coming against us of course). But for a player on a team as bad as that, he still managed 64 catches and 800 yards. I know Jerry talked about getting the younger recievers involved more, but I think at 32 years of age, Torry Holt can still be an impact player in this league. I think the receiving squad needs depth, if Roy Williams goes down, our starting recievers are Crayton and Austin/Hurd? is anybody comfortable with that? I'm certainly not.

I think he could immediatley step in and give Romo the most consistent pair of hands on the team and a guy who can move the chains very well. He also brings a vetran prescence to the locker room and gives the offense assurance in case Roy or Witten or another reciever goes down.

Torry Holt will turn 33 this season and if he could do that wearing a Dallas uniform it would be fantastic.

Why?

I do not understand the logic that we need to add more players in the passing game. Let’s count the talent we have at that position before we consider committing MORE of our cap to that position:
Roy Williams – Not sure why, but many of non-believers of his ability to be a #1 WR. Let’s give him a shot.

Crayton, Austin, Hurd, & Stanback – Nice young talent in that crowd. If Roy Williams goes down…these guys will have to step…or learn to block for our RB’s. Can you say 2 WR set? Even better, can you say 1 WR set…Witten and Bennett

Witten & Bennett – WOW – those two get me excited

3 Headed RB Monster – these guys can catch too.

Next, would you rather committ cap dollars to another WR or some OL-men? What about another veteran CB for insurance?

Please..please..please…everytime a veteran WR gets cut..let’s not explore them….

by tb0n3 on Mar 14, 2009 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

Why

does everybody assume our running game will dominate? the line has been among the most inconsistent in the league. One of them always goes down and the blocking goes to hell. Flozell will put us in a 3rd an 15 a few times during the year and we have to throw. This team is built to win now, not in three years. The pieces are in place Now. Crayton isn’t that young I don’t think he’ll develop more than he has, he’s had his chances. Hurd has shown nothing, and Austin could be promising but he’s not a guy who can replace Williams if he goes down.

Please..please..please…everytime a veteran WR gets cut..let’s not explore them

why not? isn’t exploring options what general management is all about? you explore every option till you find the one that’s best for your team. Jerry can say he wants about getting the younger guys a chance and that’s why he cut TO, but that’s a lie. We all know why he cut TO. and if TO wasn’t deemed a distraction there wouldn’t be all this “let’s let the younger guys develop”. Believe whatever you want but Torry Holt is a better receiver than anybody on our roster now that TO is gone.

Texas Stadium has a hole in the roof so God can watch his favorite team play football.

+1000000 ....There's not even a close second on this roster..

totally agree iCowboy….You never stop trying to improve your team…T Holt would be a major addition, and a real #1 WR.

I Think So Too

Holt has always been one of my favorite receivers. Great route running, excellent hands, doesn’t create drama from what I can tell. He doesn’t have field-stretching speed anymore, but is as reliable a guy as you could ask for. He’s worth a one or two year deal, if the price is right.

by kindablue on Mar 15, 2009 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

If our line is inconsistent,

we are not going to fix it by signing an aging WR. How about spending the cap dollars on OL?

The reason why I think it is a waste of time to continue to wonder if we should sign another wideout that gets released is that we did have enough balls to go around last year…how is that going to change..we already have plenty of talent at that position.

by tb0n3 on Mar 15, 2009 6:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm all for shoring up the OL in FA...Mike Goff of SD been sitting out there all this time...He was the #1 rated OG available...and an upgrade over Kosier and Holland..

This would give us Kosier and Holland as our back ups OG’s…reducing the need to draft one this iseason…..Can then focus on OC and OT,…

No thanks

I want this year to see what we really have at the WR position. It is time to put up or shut up for the young guys. If they are roster spot mirages then lets find out now. We continue to stand pat with these guys because they have so much potential. Now is the time to find out.

I would rather develope our youngsters for the future than taking a ageing vertren..

As much as I've liked Holt

and do believe there would be a number of positives about having him in camp it is time to find out about the wr position we have. I think it is in better shape than most believe. If they do not pan out then we’ll have to get someone.

Come on

How can you possibly throw the season away before the freaking draft? Is everything in your life this depressing?

by Impatient on Mar 15, 2009 12:36 AM CDT up reply actions

It's more like that group of WR's are depressing....I'm being real...I know what we got with the likes of Crayton and Hurd,

The draft has nothing to do with it..They won’t be drafting any #1 WR’s from what I see.

If your confident that Roy Williams & Miles Austin will both hold up, and produce this upcoming season, you are a whole lot more optimistic than me. Neither one of them have shown they can they can do that. What makes you think they’ll start now ?

by CowboysRnumba1 on Mar 15, 2009 7:59 AM CDT up reply actions

My point is

A lot of teams have won with far more empty cupboards at that position. I want us to really be able to see what we have there. Jerry has been serving us so pretty strong juice on the guys we have here, but with Holt here, we wont know again.

If those guys go out there and suck it up, that’s one thing. I dont think they will. But if they do, maybe drafting a WR FINALLY becomes a priority.

that was not what I was saying at all

We need this season to find out what we have. Then if it turns out we dont have what we thought we had, draft a receiver next year.

Wait a second

You’re complaint about RW and Austin is their injury history? Tory Holt has had chronic knees problems since 2007. So what’s the point of bringing in another injury prone WR? Plus his age makes coming back from injury take longer than it would with a younger guy.

by WB3forMB3 on Mar 15, 2009 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Holt has started 91 of his past 94 games he's played in ??? Where do you see a history of health problems ?

Roy W has started only 62 of a possible 80 games since he’s come in the league…

Miles Austin has exactly 0 starts the past 3 seasons here, only suiting up for 37 with 18 catches to show for it…

I’m just brewing with confidence……

TORRY HOLT/ TONY OH NO ROMO

TORRY HOLT IS BETTER THAN ALL OF OUR RECEIVERS WE NEED 2 SIGN HIM.ALSO TRADE ROMO 4 CUTLER&FIRE JASON GARRETT WE WILL BE A BETTER TEAM AUTOMATIC UPGRADE.

one reason they cut TO was because JJ wants RW the +1 wr. There just wasnt enough balls to go around. Having 3rbs and 2 great TE’s is a very big luxury all teams dont have. So we dont need as many WR’s as normal.

Im not very confident in the WRs we have but RW and Crayton/Austin + witten and 2rb or whatever.. we dont have to go to an all WR 3,4,5 wide.

Also as everyone else says its hurd’s and austin’s 4th year so its time for them to step up and play or be gone.

What the French?! Toast!

by thebigham on Mar 15, 2009 7:03 AM CDT reply actions

anybody know

how much $$$ holt would be looking for on the market? If we can get him cheap I say get him. However, we do have a lot of guys on this team that can catch the ball. Garret doesnt have to revolve this offense around wr’s and the deep ball anymore. Just move the chains! I’m thinkin this year we look more like the Pats pre- Moss offense. Hopefully be that good

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 8:10 AM CDT reply actions

I read

on ESPN (I know shame on me) that a trade had been worked out but it fell through because he wouldn’t restructure his contract. Now that might have been because he knew he would be released and now has his pick of where to go play, or it could mean that he still wants big time money, putting him out of our reach.

First to six!!!

by sduncan24 on Mar 15, 2009 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I saw that too....

but look at Marvin Harrison. He turned down a pay-cut and he’s still on the streets. Point is, sometimes these guys over-value themselves and then reality sets in. Could be that he wants to pick his team also.

by texstar on Mar 15, 2009 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

sombody

will throw Holt some decent bucks. Not us. I like our offense. But maybe we should pick up a lower profile wr for depth. Any Ideas?

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

No on Holt

Great route runner with declining athletic ability.

Is that someone you want to give a multi-year deal to?

For the love of God

Can we please stop with this wide receiver obsession. I thought Miles Austin was the next Jerry Rice? Why would we need another high profile wide receiver? There is only one football. We have Williams, Austin, Crayton, Witten, Bennett, Barber, Jones and Choice to feed already. Let’s just roll with what we have.

Pour out some liquor for the homie T.O.

by Dub_TC on Mar 15, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Signing Holt wouldn't make sense

Then why did we drop T.O. if we another star wr was a priority. I think we will have a dedicated approach to the running game this next season. JJ also wants to see receivers Austin and Hurd on the field more often and have them develop. Signing Holt would slow there progression.

by NDCowboy8 on Mar 15, 2009 3:35 PM CDT reply actions

True

and we always seem to forget our #2 wr is Witten. The guy catches like 500 balls a year
