Andre Smith?

After leaving the combine early, and an atrocious pro day in Tuscaloosa Andre Smiths draft stock has fallen significantly. Some scouts even say there is a chance he won't even get drafted! I don't believe that and I think someone will take a chance on him. My question is if available on day two do we take a chance on him? His talent is undeniable, but work ethic is definitely a concern. OT is a position of need, and hypothetically if we drafted him he would not be asked to start right away. He has certantly has lost millions with his fallen draft status and this hopefully will light a fire in him to proove the na Sayers wrong. What do you guys think? Do we go as high as a 3rd round on him if he drops that low?

Yes

I hope he falls to us.

This is a great example of a guy who excelled in the toughest (and fastest) conference in the nation for 3 years then guys with stop watches decided he couldnt play…

He may not have the best work ethic, but he sure seems worth a shot in the second round.

This guy can play (and the wheels came off Bama when he was suspended.

I am beginning to see Smith as more of a Guard than a Tackle...

"Well, we didn't block real good but we made up for it by not tackling."

If

you’ve watched him play… He is GOOD!

if he is available in the 2nd round, that’s a steal whether he play tackle or guard, he’s big strong, and proven coming from the SEC.

Texas Stadium has a hole in the roof so God can watch his favorite team play football.

Before the combine they were saying he is by far the most talented OT to come out this year. He highest the highest upside, good feet He just needs some weight room work, and Juruvasek (sp) is a very good strength coach

Gentlemen, gentlemen ( and any gentle ladies reading)

This is a tactic as old as the draft itself. It’s called poor mouthing.

Smith may well drop, but he’s not dropping more than a handful of picks.

Teams down in the late teens, early 20s are starting whispering campaigns hoping that other teams hear he won’t get drafted, wonder, “hmmmm, was there something we missed on this guy that other teams have” panic, and then pass on him.

He’s got problems, but he’s not getting out of the first round. I seriously doubt he falls to pick 20.

I'll admit

I dont have all the facts on this kids career but man…red light goes on when someone is dumb enough to blow millions of dollars because he cant even prepare for the combine. Isnt this the kid who walked out without telling anyone. Sounds like more than a stopwatch thing. Dont waste time

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

would you want him?

sombody educate me why someone would waste a high draft pick on this slug. 17 reps on the press? Sounds like this years version of Maurice Clarett

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't call him a "slug"....

that’s a little harsh. Now they are saying that part of the reason that his 17 reps were so bad is because he has bad form. I wouldn’t call him Clarett because Clarett had a lot of off the field issues. As far as I know, this kid’s just not real bright but not the same category as Clarett. There’s a big difference in being a goof head and thug.

by texstar on Mar 15, 2009 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Slug...

meaning slacker not thug. If your not willing to work a little for the most important day of your carreer..well..sounds like he’ll just take the money and run come april.

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

My bad......

I thought you were calling him a thug. Didn’t realize a slug means slacker. I think he’s a knucklehead btw or as some people say " he’s not the brightest bulb". I guess I was kinda feeling sorry for the kid cause it’s hard to believe that someone could be that stupid.

by texstar on Mar 15, 2009 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

amen

if you cany even lift weights properly, how the hell you gonna block in the NFL

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

What I saw was when he was lifting....

he was more or less catching it then pushing it up. Make sense? What they were saying, was he is stronger than people think but he has very bad form. Hey, I would proceed very cautiously with the dude, I’m just repeating what I heard. I don’t think that I would draft him. I’d go with Jason Smith over him if I were Detroit or one of the other top picks.

by texstar on Mar 15, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no way he falls to us

He is still being graded as the 4th best tackle which means he will be gone by pick 15. He is also not the guy we would want to be our future left tackle. He is a good run blocker but struggles in pass blocking. He will probably be moved to right tackle or guard in the NFL.

by jack dein on Mar 15, 2009 6:31 PM CDT reply actions

so your saying...

some GM will spend a high 1st rounder for non pass blocking right tackle/guard non motivated slacker? Is Matt Millen back in the league?

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

If

He falls all the way to 51 he is going to be one pissed off dude. If you draft him , he will either be out to prove the others were wrong or just show more of the attitude that got him to 51 in the first place. Then what do you do. I think he will go much, much sooner anyway. I really wouldn’t want this act wearing the star.

by oldboysfan on Mar 15, 2009 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

Does anybody think

the master motivator Wade can get this kid to play at a high level???

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 7:51 PM CDT reply actions

He won't

fall anywhere near us. He’ll go in the 1st watch him on tape and then you’ll see how good he is. if he had poor form on the bench that really limits what weight can be thrown up, and he has long arms so poor form and long arms can significantly reduce the number of reps put up. Watch Bama with him and then without him and you’ll see how much he was missed. they say he has character issues, and most likely does, but remember randy moss?? character issues?? he’s worth the pick, if it doesn’t pan out, oh well he was worth the risk.

so

your sayin he’ll be superman come sundays? I dont see it. But he’ll get his money

by fretman on Mar 15, 2009 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

no

i didn’t say that. i said he’s worth the risk, you’ve probably never even seen him play.

never doubted

what he did in college. Just seems like too much risk with all things considered. And if I were a GM with a 1st rd pick, I’d wanna know whats going inside this kids head right now.

by fretman on Mar 16, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I personally don’t care about bench numbers just watch the guy play and you can see he has the power to move people. If he makes it past the number 15 pick I will be surprised. With as many teams that need a tackle and with so few top end guys this year he would be a good pick. I still don’t think that he will be a LT in the NFL but he should still be good on the right side or at guard. From what I heard about his workout it wasn’t bad. And I really love how he is the only one in the draft that has character issues thats being talked about. The guy should be a solid player but like anybody being drafted theres always the bust possibility.

by jack dein on Mar 15, 2009 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know much about him,

but this oline makes too many stupid plays as is…..something tells me this guy isn’t the solution.Especially considering we’d need to trade a lot to get him i think.
