Roll Call: The three million edition

It's a big day here at Blogging The Boys. Sometime in the 9-10 PM EST hour on March 18th, BTB had its 3-millionth visit according to Sitemeter. Yup that's 3,000,000 or slightly less than what DeMarcus Ware will earn an hour once Jerry gives him a new contract.

Man, I really never thought it would get this far. Big thanks to you guys who have been reading since the early days, and big thanks to Rafael and the BSR crew who joined us last year and sped us along to three million.

Seems like a good time for a roll call. If you read BTB, let us know in the comments below by signing-in. Just give us a shout and let us know you're out there.

I'll start. I'm Grizz, sometimes known as Dave, and I need a playoff victory in the worst way.

And since I don't want this post to be overly self-indulgent, here are some links.

Romo and RW have been working out together.

RW1 has a visit with the Bengals.

The NFL says the Cowboys don't get a competitive advantage from the Thanksgiving Day game.

i like this blog

been a cowboys fan for years and years – born in dallas, but haven’t lived there in nearly four decades. still, some things die hard.

i do wish the cowboys would make some noise in the playoffs. i’m not one of those fans who thinks that every season that doesn’t end in a super bowl victory is a failure, but the last time they got a post-season victory, bill clinton was still ‘celebrating’ with monica in the oval office…

Raf & his gang over to BTB. Love the site and read it pretty much everyday. My wife even asked me a few days ago what in the world I was doing “still” reading about the Cowboys since the season doesn’t start until Sept. I guess I’m a year-around fan now. 35 years old – live in League City,TX (outside of Houston) and have been a Cowboys fan since I was 2 years old (that’s what my mother tells me). My best friend is a deadskin fan so we pretty much talk crap to eachother year around. I have been banned from my house when the Boys play because I sometime say bad words but have a few close sports bars around so it’s not like I complain.

Fan since mid 70s, first came to BTB in 2006… and thought we’d have won a playoff game by now. This year! This site seriously feeds my addiction — i check in nearly every day and often several times. Love the compiled news, original analysis and commentary, training camp coverage which makes me feel like I know the team more than we ever could before, and the ever expanding community. Cowboy Fan Since I Can Remember

A SW Louisiana Cowboys fan here. I remember watching the Cowboys games in the mid ’60’s at a friend of my dad’s. Dandy Don, Boy Hayes, Mel Renfro and of course Coach Landry! We watched the games there because he had a motorized antenna that could be easily aimed toward Texas so we could catch the games. Then a few years later this same guy was the first in our circle of friends to get cable. Wow! We could then watch the games with no snow on the picture. Geaux Cowboys!!

Geaux Cowboys!

by dlthibo on Mar 19, 2009 5:59 AM CDT reply actions

this is classic!

I grew up on the beach in New Jersey – with cable you got both Philly and NYC stations. It meant I got to watch ALMOST every Cowboy game, as they were so popular through the late 70s/80s… and by then it really didn’t matter.

How far have we come? I am in Phuket, Thailand, watching March Madness on www.Justin.TV … which, of course, I know about from … BTB…

Being Australian I didn’t discover the NFL and the Cowboys until I was about twelve but I’ve been a fan ever since. I arrived just in time for the 90’s dynasty and that hooked me good. The last 5-6 years have been great for me as a fan because I have the Internet and cable now and can watch the games and have access to mountains more information online.

Those are the two longest playoff-winning droughts in the NFC."

Arkansas alumni, Boys fanatic since I was a kid and lived in Kansas City. Move to Dallas when I was 7 but my first memories of Cowboys games were when I was 5 and 6 years old. Can’t explain but feel lucky to have been in the metro area all these years.

Can’t believe I blog now, this is my first, but enjoy the info I receive from people that actually know more about the ’Boys then I do. That was a shock when I first joined.

Why can’t there be a package plan for one of the upcoming games for BTBers to meet in person? Just a thought.

by cow_fanatic on Mar 19, 2009 7:22 AM CDT reply actions

I live an hour from buffalo :-(

But I still cheer for the boys! I grew up in a household of Giants fans, which I think is what made me a Boys fan in the first place (yay for gradeschool rebellion!).

I read every weekday, but don’t post much in the off season. I have a new daughter, who will start cheering for the Cowboys this season. Here are my beliefs:

I believe Witten is the best TE in football.
I believe Bennett has the propensity to be the next one.
I believe Romo can play this game
I believe he hasn’t for a while, and needs to stop fumbling.
I was complacent about the TO move.
I miss Aikman’s leadership.

I miss Emmitt’s “shut up and be the best” attitude. Will there ever be another Emmitt in any position, on any team? A guy that is simply the best, with finesse, and work-horse like tendencies, but who stays out of the bad media? </ rant>

Most importantly, I believe this is the year. No, really. Here’s why:

1. TO, RW1 gone….fresh starts
2. RW2, miles, sam, isiah and Witten are well above average corps
3. Romo will focus this year
4. We are going to get back to some running, with 3 capable backs
5. Less expectation than last year.
6. Cowboys Nation Needs It!

Anyway, keep up the good work!
And for those of you who are not aware, HEpennypacker is an alias of Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld.
“I’m H.E. Pennypacker, I’m a wealthy Industrialist, philanthropist, and, uh, bicyclist…”

Me: "We got Roy Wiliams in a trade today." My Wife: "What does that mean?" Me: "Well, it at least means that there are two poeple playing for the 'Boys now with the same name."
A few hours later: My Wife: "If our next child is a boy, what would you want to name it?" Me: "How aobut Roy Wiliams?"

glad to see I’m not the only Boys + Seinfeld fanatic in the ranks.

Do you have a favorite episode?
Mine would be The Switch, because not only is there the Genious plan (I’m not sure of the exact pronounciation, but I believe it’s…Ménage à trois?") but we ALSO found out Kramer’s first name!

I started watching back when I was in the Army

Guys in my unit would get together and watch it when it came on. My first episode was the one that ran backwards where they went to India.

My favorite is the episode I think titled “Junk Mail”. Probably since I’m a mailman.

Kramer: “I can’t stop all these companies. So I’m going to attack this problem at the choke point.”
Seinfeld: “Stop the mail?”
Kramer: “That’s even better!”

I think it has now but there was such a furor over the burning of the Puerto Rican flag that it was kind of buried.

BTW, my conscience is getting to me already. I had to google that to find out the name of the episode. LOL

Correct...

The flag burning is why that episode is never played anymore.

“prepare yourself madem, for an all out bidding war….but this time, advantage Varnsen!”

Jerry: George is dating a convict.
Kramer: Really? What's she in for?
George: Embezzlement.

Number 3 from down-under.

In between vegemite sandwiches am an avid reader of the blog and occassional poster.

I stumbled across a link on KC Joyner’s Football Scientist site and followed it to the The Boys Blog – around the time our defensive backfield imploded in the last few minutes against washington and we started to experience “life after woodson”. Then to Blue and Silver Report and BTB.

Been a fan since ‘83 with a vacation to visit a childhood friend who had moved to Dallas. Watched them implode against the Redskins and Rams in ’83 and suffered through the rest of the ’80’s before salvation in the early ’90’s. Now waiting for salvation again…. – it could be worse, could be an Eagles fan….

Great news about RW and Romo working out together...

Reminds me of the stories Irvin used to tell about getting Garrett the throw him passes in the late evenings after everyone else had gone home. Makes me think theat there might be hope for this pair to do something special.

Oh, and the Thanksgiving Day game was a big advantage, its like getting an extra bye week in the season. That’s the reward you get when you step up and volunteer to do it when no other team wanted to take the game back in the day. With the NFL implementing Thursday night football, though, that advantage has been taken away.

Congrats to all current and past contributors on BTB. I'm CowboysRnumba1, formerly known as BoyzRback and BoyzRback07...I've been a BTB addict since May 2007. A Cowboys fanatic since December 28th, 1975

I’m Doug, currently residing in sunny East Central Florida. Grew up in CT, land of Giants and Pats fans, and someday soon plan on living in Dallas, TX.

My unwavering devotion, and earliest recollections of America’s team can be traced back to that special day in late December 1975, when Roger Staubach drew back that arm and heaved a deep “Hail Mary” bomb to Drew Pearson with time winding down, scoring a 50 yard TD to win a divisional playoff game. Been a die hard fan since, and that will never change. I will be buried with a Cowboys jersey.

I have been a BTB regular since the day I discovered the site shortly after the ‘07 draft. I’m a daily contributor in posts and comments. I urge all “lurkers” to add their insight or point of view, and to Grizz and the BTB Boyz, keep up the good work…..

Cowboy fan in Houston

The first time I visited this site Raf was breaking down the interception Bledsoe threw that cost him the job and got Romo his shot at QB. I have been coming back ever since. Been a Cowboy fan since listening to the 1966 championship game in the Cotton Bowl on the radio. I was living in Fort Worth at the time and it was blacked out on local TV. Thank you guys for the articles.

Followed Raf and Raul everywhere but never posted till I landed here. The merging of the blogs has brought together so many different points of view and opinions that I had to start throwing in my two cents. Great job Grizz, Raf and everyone else.

Born in Fort Worth, raised in Abilene, now living in Virginia Beach where I hang out with a bunch of skins fans.

My avatar is me at FedEx last Nov when the Cowboys beat the skins. They were handing out cheap knock offs of the terrible towel which Snyder called “Rally Rags”.

BulletBob

Cowboy fan since their inception (I’m an old fart). Also, an avid track fan and was amazed by Bob Hayes’ performance in the 1964 Olympics. I’ll never forget his anchor leg on the 440 relay (they measured things in yards instead of meters back then). Was elated when Hayes became a Cowboy.

Ran track myself in college and after a particularly bad race was given the nickname of “Bullet” in jest. Since my first name is Bob and Hayes was my favorite receiver it seemed that BulletBob was the only logical choice for a “handle”.

Garrett needs to get a clue!

A quick draft note...

I guess Derrick Williams improved his stock alot at his pro day.

He ran a 4.37 and apparently when he was running at the combine he had the flu.

Perhaps if Dallas were to take a wideout, he could be had in the fourth.

by AirforceBat on Mar 19, 2009 9:49 AM CDT reply actions

Or we could sign Matt Jones

Who also runs a 4.3, and is much taller, and wouldn’t have to waste a draft pick on him.

True...

but he has a problem with an up and coming disease that has affected way too many athletes.

He got busted with coke, he hasn’t torn apart 3 locker rooms. Holy crap, Randy Moss admitted to smoking weed, he has really ruined the Patriots. Getting caught with drugs doesn’t equate to locker room problem.

True...

It’s a dependability problem.

The guy got off really light for being caught with coke, and part of his probation was that he couldn’t drink until the end of his probation.

What does the dude do?

He drinks and then gets tested right before a contract year.

Moss gets away with saying a few things because he had already earned his stripes. IMO if he hadn’t have wasted two years in Oakland, I think he would be breathing down the neck of Jerry Rice.

He’s one of the biggest athletic freaks I’ve ever seen in my life.

He got caught with cocaine once,

but then he violated his parole when he got caught with alcohol in his system.

I am all down with people getting second chances, BUT he was pretty much just given a slap on the wrist for having a narcotic and he got out of it with some nice stipulations. One of them was not to consume alcohol until his parole period was up.

To me that shows a lack of self control, and a big don’t give a crap factor.

And I was a huge Matt Jones fan when he was being drafted.

My Daily Fix...

I’m at least here every day to read. Being a Cowboy fan since the late 60’s, I can say that growing up in the seventies watching the Steeler-Cowboy super bowls has me still fuming. Look at it from my perspective- they beat us twice in Super Bowls, and we only beat them once. I think we still owe them a can-of-you-know-what, as well as the rest of the NFL. That’s what makes this last Super Bowl victory by them that much more harder to swallow as a Cowboys fan. If their victory in the big game won’t make our owner react, nothing will. I think we’re gonna be just fine…..

I grew up in Northern California, and when I was 9 years old I found myself rooting for the cool blue star in the NFC title game, even though everyone else in the room was rooting for the local team, the 49ers.

Congratulations!

Great things don’t stay secret for long!

I initially found Rafael’s blog back in the day looking for a way to keep track of a Cowboys game that I couldn’t watch on TV and have been hooked ever since. His (and now Dave and others’) excellent analysis of everything Cowboys has kept me entertained and in the know.

Thanks, guys. I’m not sure how I’d survive being a Cowboys fan in Philly without this type of outlet. (Eagles fans are bad, but the few years I spent with Redskins fans in Virginia was even worse).

Funny related story:

I was wearing a “Got Five?” shirt in Criminal Law class earlier this year, when my teacher asked me what the shirt referred to. (“Got Five?” refers, of course, to Dallas’ 5 superbowl rings)

I told him that it would probably be in my best interest not to answer the question, but quickly changed my mind when I realized he might think it was something illegal (being that he’s devoted much of his life to criminal law) and told him that I am a Cowboys fan.

He knew that I wasn’t from Texas and asked me how/why I was a Cowboys fan from South Philadelphia. My father is from Eastern Europe and I was never pressured to be an Eagles fan, so I compared my being a Cowboys fan to being gay, and that I was born a Cowboys fan and hadn’t really made the choice.

The class erupted in laughter and that was that. Just thought I’d share a little bit of the Philly Cowboy fan experience with you all.

Keep up the fantastic work, guys. This blog gets more than a few of us through the week!

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

French girl, living in between Paris and Versailles, I discovered the NFL when i was a student in Lousiana in 92 and immediately got attracted to the Cowboys (with Aikman as our QB, that wasn’t too difficult). I discovered BTB around the end of 2007.
I sometimes post, more often during the season, and check it everyday.
Congratulations to BTB and thanks to all of you for making it so enjoyable.

after you stop drinking

It's Like a Speed Limit

It’s 65 because the worst drivers can’t drive well above that mark. Most drivers can easily manage a car at 75-80 and some can have full control of a car at 200.

Similarly, those who are most easily impaired are unable to drive at .08. It’s unfortunate that everyone is allowed to drive, but until that changes the rules have to accommodate them.

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

wrong dude...sorry about your brother but that's incorrect

It takes alot more to reach a .08 BAC……..Im in the law field and I’ll leave it at that. It takes alot more than 2 beers, 2 shots, 2 glasses of wine to reach a .08 BAC. Simply not true…and people use that tired excuse all the time..

by Boyzfan94 on Mar 21, 2009 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Boyz.....

doesn’t it take about 6 or 7 beers to register a .08? That’s what I’ve always heard. By no means am I an expert, but I thought that was kinda the number. Besides that, Stallworth is registering anywhere between .12-.14 and when you register that high at 8 am it means you have probably been drinking for a while. Right?

you could get to .08 BAC drinking 6 or 7 beers yes....

other factors have to be considered. Weight of the person, did they eat? tolerence of the person. percentage of the alocohlic drinks, what kind of beverages. 5 mixed drinks would yield a higher BAC than 5 beers in most cases.

by Boyzfan94 on Mar 22, 2009 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions

by Terry on Mar 22, 2009 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

dude than you need to find a new job...

(2) alcoholic drinks will not register a .08 % BAC..what the heck are you smoking…..I’ve been on a breathalyzer as part of my job in a class room setting with other drinkers. Different drinkers consuming beer, hard liquor, wine and shots. The TWO beer rule was used as a focus of the training. One drinker who was a casual drinker 1 to 2 drinks per week who was average weight was used. He consumed 2 beers in less than an hour and didn’t registered anywhere near a .08 % BAC. This is the BS myth that people use to the police all the time when stopped and are questioned how many drinks they consumed. I’ve heard it countless times….Officer…I only had 2 drinks, then but blow a .16 BAC on the Breathalyzer.

And if you want to know Terry I’m a police officer and have extensive training on the Aloctest (Breathalyzer). I’ve been to numerous training courses on this subject. I’m what they called an expert in the field.

I’m just saying. I’ve seen heavy drinkers and casual drinkers. Big, fat, skinny, people who ate prior to consumption, who didn’t eat at all…a ton of scenerios and none came close to a .08 BAC in my 12 years experience and training. Unless they are serving illigal crap where you live I’ve never heard of anyone reaching a .08 BAC drinking two beers, two shots, etc.,

in many states you can beat a .08 BAC with a good attorney because it's borderline..

In his case with a person being killed as a result of him consuming alcohol the chances are very slim. Many states, like NJ you can drop it down to a reckless driving charge with a .08 BAC.

What he'll have to do is try to prove that the accident was the fault of the pedestrian.

If he can prove that he didn’t cause the accident, even though he was over the limit, then he’s got a fighting shot. He’ll still get raked over the coals for a DUI, but that’s better than vehicular manslaughter.

Born and raised a Cowboy fan in Dallas now living in Annapolis, MD.

Still as miffed about the first Cowboy loss I really paid attention to, Superbowl V in 1971, as most every loss since then. I should be over that first one any decade now but there is no telling how much longer it will take before I will be able to even connect through the Pittsburgh airport without feeling a little uneasy. And I can tell you exactly which chair every member of my family for 3 generations was sitting in when TD went 99 yards; or at least they were sitting in them for the first 35 to 40 yards.

God, I love this game…

Up here in Jefferson City, Mo. Grew up a Cowboys fan in California during the ’80’s watching my Dad lay on the couch in his Danny White shirt with both fingers crossed chanting “sack, fumble, interception” over and over when our D was on the field. The only time I ever got to watch the Cowboys all the time was when I lived in Lake Dallas, Tx. for a year and when I was stationed at Ft. Hood. Now it’s a struggle to watch all my games.
Started over at The Boy’s Blog when someone at another site started posting all Raf’s articles and I liked what I was reading. Went to BSR and now here. I keep this site up on my computer 24/7 and just refresh when I’m home. Great site.

Texas Native, Cowboy Fan For Life. Favorite Cowboy tie between Danny White/Troy Aikman. Tony Dorsett and Michael Irvin are up there..I see Dorsett at the Lifetime Fitness in Carrollton and he still looks like he could break off a 100yd+ on a Monday Night.

I love this blogsite as it is as good as the people that contribute..we don’t always agree..but there good discussions and debate.

I cannot wait for the upcoming season…and just keep in mind..the bitter makes the sweet sweet. Last year was the bitter..this year will be sweet!

Cowboy Fan for at Least 47 Years

Herb from Louisiana, living in Alaska for 44 years.

The only Cowboy game I have attended is a pre-season game in New Orleans in 62 or 63.

Enjoy reading the blog.

This is my first post.

I’ve lived in Dallas my whole life, but just this year started college in Connecticut. I’ve been reading BTB for about six months now. I stumbled upon it at the beginning of last season after relying on DC.com and the DMN Cowboys blogs for all of my Cowboys news. I love BTB’s analysis and informed discussions. Keep up the good work!

Rain or Shine we love 'The Boys' in Seattle

I grew up watching ‘The Boys’ with my brother in the ‘70 and have never looked back. I now have the privilege of going to games with Blake, one of my four college age sons, when we play the Seahawks and meeting him at various sports bars in Seattle to watch games (the Buffalo game comes to mind). We’ve even taken a couple of road trips to training camp. Blake’s been a long time fan of this site and got me into it a couple of years ago. Thanks Grizz and Shango for hooking up with him at camp last year…we got great photos; and thanks for all your work! This is one mom that’s ready for some football!

Long time reader and lurker

Once I found this site, I wondered how I lived without it. Definitely fills my need for a Boys fix when I am jonesin…Grizz, Raul, Raf, GloryDayz, JimVance, Brandon, TunaHelper, you guys rock! I get info, commentary, and a place to celebrate and gripe about my favorite team. I thought I was a pretty knowledgeable fan…till I came here. Whoa. Army brat born in San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston, just as Landry was leading the fellas up to Green bay for the Ice Bowl. Got to see the playoff game at Candlestick against the 49ers in ’72 as my first NFL game. Thanks Dad. Went to RFK with my Dad in ’78, wearing my Cowboys gear, just a kid. Some Skins fan put a cigarette out on my jacket. Nice. The Rivalry is forever etched in my brain from this. My name is Mike, and I am a Cowboysholic. Hi Mike! Seriously, Congrats on 3 Million hits.

All my friends think I always got the Scoop on the boys…..HeHeHe…..BTB is my little secret…..HaHaHa!!!!!

Slow, but finally reading. I am struggling with health issues more now and am not as active as in our early years but I do try to read at least weekly.

Thanks for all the work and skill you bring to us. A few thousand in the first million or two belong to me!

illcowboy, Bloomington, IL

Became a Boys fan because of Roger Staubach, like many on this site. Started following them Tony Dorsett’s rookie year. Followed Raf, Raul, and the group from BSR over here during the merger. It’s great to get perspectives from fellow Cowboy fans. Hopefully I’ll never have to agree with Tex again and may Terry will Romo to the HOF.
