Quincyyyyy's highly anticipated mock draft (2nd to last)

Update: I just want to make it clear that I made this mock based in part on who we have shown interest in.  These players include Freeman, Dillard, and Roger Allen.

I figure we'll leave Radio City Music Hall with around 7 players so I made some trades to try to be more realistic.

So without further ado...

2a. LT Jamon Meredith GameCock

2b. ILB Marcus Freeman Buckeye (Via trade 4th and a 3rd)

4a. Wr Jarett Dillard Owl (via trade two 5ths and a 6th)

I think Jarett Dillard and Chris Baker are exciting picks

Baker is like 326 and had a 35.5 vertical. That is crazy.

And here is a video on Dillard. I like him because he is a reliable route runner and can get separation. I think he is a WR that Romo can depend on when he needs a clutch play.

Well I'm not super high but it appears the Cowboys scouts like him

And I think he’ll be a good pick. He would be a good fit at WILB. And he had the best short shuttle time of the lbers, which is what scouts look at when it comes to lbers. (he ran a 4.12).

You are talking about the sixth round; these are not exactly blue chip prospects

Like I mentioned before I made this mock in part based on who we have shown interest in. We have supposedly talked to Roger Allen, and he is exactly the type of player you take in the sixth round. He is a big raw physically talented guard. And Bruce Johnson is a good cover corner.

Anyone watch draft guys take on Dillard...

He keeps his hips so low, can change directions in a split second which will give him seperation…He did a curl route and after he turned around it took the corner 5 steps later to react and turn

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 12:48 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Marcus Freeman...

Positives: A bit shorter than scouts would like, but a well-built athlete with room for additional mass. … Instinctive defender who flows to the ball quickly. … Athletic enough to elude blockers and make plays at or near the line of scrimmage. … Reliable open-field tackler. … Breaks down well and can drive the ballcarrier into the ground. … Good awareness and speed in coverage. … Gets good depth on his drops. … Reads the quarterback’s eyes and closes quickly. … Excellent special teams player. … Tough and plays through pain. … Solid week of practice at the Senior Bowl.

Negatives: A bit smaller than scouts would like. … Likes to avoid blockers rather than facing them up and struggles in disengaging. … Lacks the bulk to hold up when targeted in the running game. … Athletic in coverage, but seems content to allow the reception to be made and make a secure tackle, rather than breaking on the ball. … Has struggled with durability: torn knee ligaments and a subsequent staph infection forced him to redshirt the 2005 season. Had his knee scoped following the 2007 season for a possible torn meniscus. Struggled through the 2008 season with a recurring ankle sprain.

struggles to shed blockers….ugggh

..... Thanks

to cbssportsline for the positives and negatives….I don’t want to plagerize

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 12:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said I'm not particularly high on him I just picked him because Cowboys scouts seem to have their eye on him

If I was basing this mock totally on who I liked I would probably have picked Jasper Brinkley or Scott McKillop, but I got this feeling that we are going to end up with Freeman on draft day

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He seems good for a nickel LB..

that won’t be a huge disadvantage in run support….and coaching is there to help fix players faults..
I like Brinkley and I hope this is a smoke screen

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 2:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't get too caught up in the negatives.

Every scouting report on every player has a long list of negatives like that. Even on the elite guys, they nit-pick until they fill out a paragraph.

I gave up torture for Lent. Between now and Easter plagiarists will be humanely euthanized.

it gets a thumbs down from me as well..

i love mckillop…

but even if it had mckillop, i still wouldn’t be too thrilled about this draft… no offense quincyyyy

by Terry on Mar 25, 2009 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sensenbaugh is our starter.

The kid is really talented and young and finished last season strong in Jacksonville. And it seems Scandrick will be pushing Hamlin for playing time at FS this season. With some of the things we have done this offseason in regards to that position, it has become a low priority.

CB is not a need because you have Newman, Jenkins, and then Scandrick on the nickel. Then you have Ball who our coaches really like, and supposedly they look foward to getting him more playing time this year. Drafting a CB in the second or third round to be 5th on the depth chart makes no sense.

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know about you

but I sure as hell am not comfortable with our back up safeties or corners at all. We need some infusion of young talent in the defensive backfield.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Mar 25, 2009 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Scandrick, Jenkins, Sensenbaugh, and Ball are all young players. You can’t have high draft picks backing up every position.

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree i like your mock it shows us more whos likely to be chosen instead of the big name guys

that everybody wants to put on your drafts.. i like dillard alot and think that the only positions we really need is ol lb and cb this year and maybe a SS in late rounds.

by regaberto on Mar 25, 2009 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

but they are not backups except for Ball, Scandrick is essentially a starter in the nickel

and who said the backups have to be high picks, just not 5th or 6th rounders.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Mar 25, 2009 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well you only have so many backup positions you can fill on draft day

to do what you are proposing we would have to draft 11 players and I don’t see that happening.

We need a NT more than we need a CB or safety; we need a nickel lber/future starter more than we need a CB or S; and we need o-line depth/youth more than we need a backup CB or S.

We only have so many picks, and based on what I know about Jerry he’ll be wheeling and dealing so I don’t think we’ll select 11 players. Expect Jerry to value quality over quantity. Don’t expect Jerry to keep all of his mid round picks instead of trading them just for the sake of having a mid round guy being your 5th CB on your depth chart instead of a late round guy.

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not necessarily

we could draft 8 or 9 players and still get a safety and CB in the 3rd or 4th rds.

I totally disagree we need a NT more than a safety or CB. All three positions need quality backups equally.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Mar 25, 2009 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The difference is the CB you draft might not get any playing time at all this year

The NT we draft will certainly be getting playing time this year. Rat needs some to spell him.

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

given Newman's injury history

I’m pretty sure a 4th CB will see a lot of PT.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Mar 25, 2009 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

5th not 4th

the person we draft will be 5th on the depth chart.

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not if he beats out Ball

which would be a strong possibility.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Mar 25, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe it's a good possibility

but Ball is more likely than not going to beat out a mid round rookie.

Point is we have no one behind Rat and we do have people behind Newman and Jenkins. So NT is obviously more of a priority.

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's just my opinion

we can get a CB in this draft better than Ball if we draft them in the mid rounds, again just my opinion.

In Romo we Trust

NT might not see the field..

Wade is real high on Junior Siavvi, also the Cowboys have a scheduled visit with Micheal Hamlin from Clemson…just thought I would throw that out there

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Siavii is like 30 years old

he would only be a short term solution

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They can squeeze a year out of him, at least.

C’mon—the guys stuck around the league this long and if Wade was not impressed, he would’ve already stuck the fork in him.

Siavii is the competition that will prove the NT they draft is worthy of making the team. If not, then Go Ducks!

We have our top 3 set

in Jenkins, Newman and Scandrick…I wouldn’t mind getting Mickens but this draft covers all our holes

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wiley has all the tools to become a very good safety...

he just hasn’t put it all together…and next year is so deep in safety even if Wiley doesn’t pan out we can snag one of the elite safety prospects next year

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like the Wiley pick

The more I read about him, the more I hope they take him in the mid rounds.

Now, I really feel behind.

Why do people like Meredith so much?

I know he has experience at OT and OG and he’s strong, but he’s not even the size of Kosier. I think the teams that run zone blocking would covet his attributes more than a power running team like Dallas.

I like the idea of getting a replacement for Flo, but I don’t think he’s the answer.

I think a good playing weight for him would be 310

I think our line might have gotten too big. I wouldn’t mind seeing our next LT sacrifice some ‘size’ for some athleticism.

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, good point

The athleticism, long arms, and strength, combined with his ability to pack on a bit more weight does make sense.

He is a smart player too..

And that would be a nice change…. But Quincy I have one ?….Where is Caldwell, we need a Center that can make the right line calls and Caldwell is real smart…the only Crimson Tide player to graduate before his Junior Year

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah we may need to draft a center

I’m not comfortable with Procter being our backup

by quincyyyyy on Mar 25, 2009 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He does have a lean body Tom, and will be able to pack on 10-15lbs, while maintaining agility

The long arms, big hands are a plus…Very intelligent guy as well…I’m not totally fond of him, but he’s probably the better risk in that range, if we’re going OT.

.He’s the only true LT prospect in that area. He will not offer much in the run game though, but can turn into a stallar pass protector……heck, we hardly run to the left as it is with Flo, so I doubt this guy will hurt us that much…..

.I like him, but just thinking if Robinson or Wood were there too….I’d go Duke !!

1st rated OG or 3rd rated OC or 7-8th rated OT ? not my decision …

by CowboysRnumba1 on Mar 25, 2009 8:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We are already 3 deep

w/ quality Guards tho, and we have only 2 OT that are proven McQ and Free are unknown

by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 25, 2009 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

unknown ? ...so your telling me any rookie we draft at OT is a "known" ?

I count 4 deep at OT, you want 5 OT’s ?

If Kosier goes down with an injury again, who backs up Davis and Holland ?
aaahhhh gotcha ?

by CowboysRnumba1 on Mar 26, 2009 12:58 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

McQ isn't that good

we are three deep in reality at OT, and I’m not even sold on Free, so it may really be 2

by quincyyyyy on Mar 26, 2009 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

McQ is one of the few that can swing from T to G, so that's how he's stuck around.

Drafting a guy like Tupuo would help alleviate this worry, but this is all assuming that Holland will have to be used for an extended period of time this year. We invested a 6th rounder in him to be a backup, so I agree that the biggest depth need on the oline is on the bookends.

It’s funny that I have yet to read anybody fearing a backup for Colombo.

George Teague, Brock Marion, the Roy Williams-of-old: Where are you?

by Aaron Novinger on Mar 26, 2009 1:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If we are throwing just anyone out there

We are 5 deep at guard including Gibbons and Proctor, I did mention Quality and we have 3 at Guard that can step in. If either Columbo or Flo goes down who backs them up McQ or Free which might not be a good thing. If either Davis or Kosier goes down Holland steps in. Takes 2 injuries to totally screw up the guard spot but it potentially takes only one of our OTs to go down to where we have to rely on guys who are unknown. Thats why I say OT is more of a priority than OG
