Expanded Regular Season...18 Games?

Has anyone else heard this talk of expanding the regular season to 17 or possibly 18 games?
I just read it in an article at USAtoday.com:

Let me be the first to say I would love an 18 game schedule. More football = Happy Pennypacker! The preseason is bitter-sweet to me. Yeah, we can evaluate a few younger guys, but it's not really that fun to watch, plus you have to hear the (insert local team here if you don't live in Dallas) fans talk about how they went 4 - 0 in the preseason this year so they can't wait for the real season to start so they can kick some butt.
Anyway, who's in favor?
(In case you didn't actually read the article, 17 games would mean 3 preseason games, 18 obviously means 2 preseason games.)

I think preseason is too long
2 or 3 is plenty so I’m in favor. The only bad thing is that I would have to hold my fantasy draft earlier which kinda sucks because I usually hold it Sunday before Labor Day when everyone is in town and can stay up late because no work the next day.
In any event, 17-18 regular season games is a good thing.

I'd rather they just left it a 16 game season...

I love the NFL, but I don’t have a need for more regular season games.
Just fewer preseason ones.

the problem is though
the NFL has contracted with the networks to have 21 weeks televised, its just a matter how they are allocated between preseason and regular season.

I would love 17 or 18 games
but I just don’t think it’s realistic. The injuries and the toll of playing such a bruising, physical game is too much IMO.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

I believe that with what these guys are paid, a few more games is not that much to ask. I know they stay in shape all year and all, but really, 3 million a year to play for (at most) 19 games that count?
All said and done, if you figure high and estimate that they actually put in 35 weeks in a year, that’s still 17 less than I work.
I’m not saying they don’t work hard, and must sacrifice a lot flying all over the country for a few months, but c’mon. 3 mil a year is a lot of dough, and they knew about the possibility of injuries when they signed up. There are a few really serious injuries each year. Most are blown out of proportion…meaning that people sit longer than necessary, because it’s good for their careers. Not saying thats wrong, I’m just saying I’d trade my boring job at 40k per year for the chance to play the game I love, making a fraction of what these guys do…..even if it meant a sprained ankle or some turf toe.

How often in your job do you have 300 lbs. guys trying to rip your head off??
How many times to you have to run full speed at a 260 lbs. RB (Jacobs) and launch yourself at him trying to stop the guy?? I don’t know what type of job you have but I’ll bet that in the first 30 minutes of the first game of the season most of these players are subjected to more physical abuse than most of us are all year.
The amount of money these guys make means nothing. I love this game but I know that I CAN’T PHYSICALLY DO IT. I’m not knocking myself or you but if WE COULD do it then we would do it. This isn’t all just about speed or height or weight. It’s about the ability to run down the sideline with a football in your arms, get the crap knocked out of you by a 240 lbs. LB or 215 lbs. SS at full speed and yet getting right back up and going to the huddle and asking for the ball again. Could you do it?? Could most of us do it?? I don’t think so. No matter how much money these guys make they do something that is more physically demanding and debilitating than what most of us will ever do. You already see how beat up these guys are at the end of a 16 game season even without going to the playoffs. Imagine 2 more. I think it’s too much.

And I agree, what they do is tough. but you must remember too, that one of the biggest parts of their jobs is preparing for this. You’re right, I could not let those types of guys beat on me. But the reason is that I’m behind a desk all day. If I was getting PAID to be in the weight room, training my body for just such performance and just such abuse, I truly believe that I could do it. They have access to the best equipment money can buy, and spend hours per day with strength and conditioning coaches to perform at these levels…that what makes it a job.
Again, I’m not disagreeing with what you’ve said, I just think that doing something you Love and getting paid like a king to do it are things that matter, and with that being said, I don’t think two more weeks is two much to ask.

I'm not disagreeing with you either.
I’d love to see another game or two just because of my football addiction. And if you had asked me a year ago I was actually advocating an extension to the season and shortening the pre-season. I’ve changed my opinion somewhat. The biggest obstacle to this IMO would be the NFLPA. They aren’t going to want the players to have to put in another 2 games of work for the same amount of pay. Plus, the physical aspect. I’ll almost bet that one of the big reasons the NFL isn’t going to push for more regular season games is that they don’t want to have to fight the NFLPA on this issue while they’re negotiating a new CBA.

I can’t see the players going for this idea. One more headache in the negotiations that the owners and the NFLPA probably don’t need.

Let’s just see how that goes. I would love more football, but I do worry about the team’s health by the end of the regular season grind.

How about 30 games....
and 5 preseason
every week but each team gets 5 bye-weeks… 5 weeks of playoffs (bye week before SB)
a month off then the draft training camp and it starts all over again

One of my favorite things about the NFL…
… is that it has a nice long off-season. The other sports feel like they start up again just a month after the prior season ended. By the time the fall rolls around again, football feels fresh and exciting. The other leagues don’t quite have that sort of charm. I hope the NFL never losses that.

an extended regular season means
that season ticket prices WILL go up- do you think the owners would really keep the prices the same? BS
increased injuries- more games, more injuries. period
higher salaries for players – if you were going to play an entire extra season in 8 years, you are shortening your overall career, not to mention the exponential effect of playing 18 games is greater than simply adding two games to the toll on a body
regular season success would be undermined by who is the healthiest at playoff time. the product would be watered down.
vote no on proposition 18.
